GUIDANCE     Exciting and thrilling things: Those are the things we want to get excited and thrilled about. That’s the good list. Then there’s this other list of things that could give us pretty much the very same adrenalin rush … annoying things that we definitely don’t want to get excited and worked up about. We would like to be calm and patient and understanding and wise about those things that make our blood boil – without toning down the ones on the good-list that get our blood moving. How to keep each kind of stimulation in its appropriate container: That is the question. We mull over and poke around this territory today.

Death – Hermit – Page of Swords

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

.

………..……...……. Death in Tarot Verbatim™ can complicate things, since it can put any negative modifier to whatever it aspects – which is everything, in this three-card simple spread. And the other two cards are already opposite to one another: Hermit is calm and wise, and Page of Swords is upset for no apparent reason – nothing in sight anyway. So you can take every meaning of both these prolific cards and negate them, wedge the remaining card into the expression, and you have yourself a sentence-reading. You can make lots more than the ones I submit here.

So the gist of our message is to get excited about what is sensible (Hermit) to get excited about, and not drive yourself crazy (Death plus Page of Swords).

……………..…………Death is not death as a rule, but it can support that theme, and it often means the end of something. In Tarot Verbatim™ (and nowhere else, unless they are influenced by Tarot Verbatim™) Death simply supplies a negative modifier (no, never, not, don’t, etc.) to a card within its reach. (Yes, there are a few Rider Waite cards Tarot Verbatim™ radically diverges from mainstream upon.) So Page of Swords’ hyper state become advice to not be that way … and today we have Hermit to add ‘but be patient and calm about it.’

……………..…………Hermit is the ‘wise old man’ stereotype. Remember he is dressed as a physician, because that is sometimes what he is talking to you about. That’s the way Hermit means ‘treatment.’

Hermit is searching and finding, being on the Path, being patient and wise and kind. He is ‘a religious,’ meaning that is his profession, so the word ‘religious’ belongs to Hermit. So it means both spiritual and religious.

He is a friend, particularly a helpful friend. ‘Help’ is one of his key words. He also watches over and looks out for … even ‘Be On the LookOut’ of police parlance (BOLO). These meanings come from the fact he is a veteran service monk who is searching for travelers on the road to help. He comes to them – and that is another trunk of Hermit’s meaning tree: to be the one who goes to the other person.

As a monk, Hermit chaste: not sexual, doing without sex, monogamous, true to his girl. As a monk, he is devoted too. So Hermit can be the devoted loving companion who isn’t married. Oh yeah, if you ask if the fellow you met is married, and up comes Hermit … he isn’t.

Hermit knows, so it’s one of several cards that translates ‘know’ and its sister words and phrases.

Hermit means truth, fact, factual, sensible, informed, realistic, objective, etc., which comes from the wisdom branch of its meaning tree. ‘Fact-finding mission’ blends the search mode of Hermit with ‘fact.’

Hermit is on the road at night. More often than you would think, this is what Hermit is in your spread for. With a light: that can be germane as well – like a flashlight. Also, if you ask where, geographically, someone is, Hermit is saying in the mountains and/or where there’s snow.

Honest and sincere are two terms that belong to Hermit, obviously.

……………..…………Page of Swords is tightly wound, edgy, stressed, nervous and in a panic as he whirls around, weapon ready, and nothing is near him for miles around. Fear (fear of the unknown, misplaced fear, imaginary fear, etc.) is his. This can be one of those annoying hyper people who can’t stand still or shut up. This can be you mad as hell about something. Page of Swords is jumpy … maybe that extra cup of coffee did it. Excitement is one of Page of Swords’ common translates.

This card represents a threat or feeling threatened … real or imaginary cause for anxiety and defensiveness. In a legal question, this is definitely the defense side.

You life would be a happy story if you ended it in one place, and a maybe-tragic story if you ended it in another. Something can be funny until something else happened, and you are apologetic that you laughed. How something ends reflects back upon its beginning, and you don’t know ‘until the fat lady sings.’ Getting upset and calming down is a cycle, these readings suggest … so why let it get to you? A Chinese fable exemplifies this very well. I found Derek Sivers’ version of that fable, and quote it for you here: “A farmer had only one horse. One day, his horse ran away.

His neighbors said, “I’m so sorry. This is such bad news. You must be so upset.”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

A few days later, his horse came back with twenty wild horses following. The man and his son corralled all 21 horses.

His neighbors said, “Congratulations! This is such good news. You must be so happy!”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

One of the wild horses kicked the man’s only son, breaking both his legs.

His neighbors said, “I’m so sorry. This is such bad news. You must be so upset.”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

The country went to war, and every able-bodied young man was drafted to fight. The war was terrible and killed every young man, but the farmer’s son was spared, since his broken legs prevented him from being drafted.

His neighbors said, “Congratulations! This is such good news. You must be so happy!”

The man just said, “We’ll see.”

Now we show where each of the phrases in each of the sentences comes from:

Death………Death in Tarot Verbatim modifies a nearby card by canceling it out, usually with a negative modifier – even simply adding ‘un’ or ‘non’ or some other prefix or suffix. But it’s usually no, never, not, won’t, doesn’t, and so forth. Death commonly means an end or to put an end to anything, so you may read it ‘quit’ or ‘stop,’ and other such words. For example it can turn ‘I think’ into ‘I don’t think’ or ‘no longer thinks.’ The trick is: which card is being affected? You look to the rest of your spread. In a three-card spread, that often doesn’t settle it. Normally the information that settles it would be in the question. Death means ‘no’ if you ask a yes-or-no question.

 .

Hermit………….Hermit isn’t the loner his title would infer. Nope, he is assertively social – out every night looking for friends to bring to his home, his monastery, for bed and breakfast. He has social skills: is kind, wise, a counselor, sincere, understanding and patient, for starters. He is even a doctor, and he comes to you – doesn’t wait to be called. His clothes tell you he is a doctor, by the way.

Here are some other Hermit key words, which are explained in Learn Tarot by Observation: searching, watching, watching out for, finding, religious, on the Path, help, chaste, devoted, not married, know (and similar words), truth, fact, factual, sensible, objective, informed, realistic, objective, honest, on the road at night, walk (pedestrian), old man, older person, paramedic (pedestrian doctor), monk.

.

Page of Swords………..Page of Swords is jazzed, scared, thrilled, mad, jealous, threatened, upset, frantic, excited, edgy, fired up, motivated, panicky, hyper, agitated, throwing a hissy-fit, trapped, high-strung, defensive, annoyed and/or annoying – even turned on. Just think adrenalin, look at companion cards, and you will place which of these, and other, energy states this card belongs to. Remember that this card need not be a person; it can be a situation that is redolent of these characteristics. In other words, Page of Swords could represent a threatening situation, a challenge, an annoying phone call, dangers and perils and an awful thing you (or someone) is facing. It often says ‘stressed.’
