A SAMPLE LESSON IN TAROT VERBATIM

Feb 7, 2016 by

HERE ARE THE WORDS THESE CARDS ARE SAYING IN THIS SPREAD.

Here is what Four of Swords has to say in these one-sentence readings: is still, sleep on it, rest and relaxation, not going to, not doing, don’t get into, procrastinating, suspended, isn’t directly involved; deceased … while you’re asleep, to stay, relax, a good sleep, you don’t _ anything, have nothing to, don’t be, going dormant, are not _ anyone, just refrain from all action, comfortable, dead wood, wait until, you are counting yourself out; to stay; still bedridden; not getting into.

ILLUSTRATION:  You see a fellow lying in a pose on the cover of a coffin, sarcophagus, in an old Catholic-type church or cathedral.  His story is:  He is doing the ritual required of knighthood:  Lying overnight in the church and meditating on his life purpose as a knight, and reporting his vision to the bishop, who passes on whether he is worthy of knighthood.

Favorite words of Four of Swords are about that repose of his, about not participating, not doing, resting, relaxing, sleeping.  Don’t call him, and he may not call you.  This is detachment, naturally, and being comfortable, procrastinating, and even waiting (a weak card for waiting).

And Four of Swords isn’t a lead card for death, but will appear for a thing or person (the deceased, here) who is already dead.  Four of Swords often quotes cliches that mention death, like:  dead to the world, dead on the vine, etc.

Here are Three of Pentacles’ meanings:  doing his part; joining in; you arrange; meet; doing business with them; relationship; doing (my) part; trading; a third party; meets with you; gets along with you; when you are around these people; they come by and; when you meet up; in the meeting; we do that; your business; in (his) relationship; let’s do it; the three of us … about our arrangement; members; you mill meet; relationship; member of the team; to be in their business; to take part; our relationship; my friends; relationship.

ILLUSTRATION:  Three people meet.  They have a business relationship:  The architect-builder demonstrates to his clients, a monk and a nun, that he built their building per the contract.  They check the blueprint while he shows that he followed it.  This is the final inspection, and their approval releases his final large draft (payment) which is his profit.  So Three of Pentacles is about a relationship, an exchange, a meeting, a deal, an agreement, people getting together for a purpose, people putting their heads together, and each party doing his part fair and square with the other parties.  Three of Pentacles often translates ‘relationship’ and ‘meeting’ as well as ‘doing (their) part.’

Here are Judgment’s phrases and words: turns over a new leaf, give your word on, go back there, again, returnee, alarming, shows up, comes back, instantly, wake you up, you say, you present, telling everybody, telling, remind, new level, new … , they tell you, (their) turn, on-again, recover, getting into another.

ILLUSTRATION:  Judgment has quite a few trunks to its meaning tree, quite a few applications.  You see the angel who wakes the dead with his horn on Judgment Day.  They are in coffins, though.  Anyway, they are alive again and they have a new life – so Judgment means both a new phase, and a repeat of a phase … or level, or anything.  Judgment means ‘next.’  ‘Turn over a new leaf,’ we say here.  ‘It’s their turn’ is part of this ‘repeated event’ or ‘repeated action’ theme for Judgment.

Judgment here re-uses one of its favorite words:  again.

‘Again’ and the ‘new life’ themes merge to donate to Judgment many many words that begin with ‘re-‘ as a prefix.  Recover, we say here.

The people are coming back to life, so Judgment co-owns:  come back, return, and its synonyms.  I say ‘co-owns’ because there’s a tribe of words that mean come back – and they mean it in different ways, providing distinctions galore.

Judgment also in this episode is relying on its ‘announcement’ set of meanings – part of the say/tell/speak theme of which it is a member in very good standing.  That theme includes making a presentation, especially for Judgment whose announcement here is as public as an announcement can get.  ‘Give your word’ is one of today’s examples of that theme for this Judgment card.

Lastly, Judgment’s noise is waking those people up.  So it owns ‘alarm,’ and ‘wakeup call,’ and just about anything that makes noise – including, of course, music and the performance of it.  Here’s your card for that horn player!

The End

NOTES:

Four of Swords is not a ‘death card’; it doesn’t initiate the subject. It is a support card if another card – or the question or subject – introduces the subject. Four of Swords refers to something dead, whether it was a living thing or not – as in ‘deadwood.’ So Four of Swords is a member of the theme of death.

Exercise you could do: Judgment means ‘suddenly’ as well as ‘again.’ Today we used ‘again’ a lot. Go back and substitute ‘suddenly’ for again, and see how that sounds.

Oh!! this layout is awesome. I noticed the meanings for Judgement are repeated as meanings for Three of Pentacles. Can you post the correct list for Three of Pentacles? I may just go down the list and pull them from the sentences. I’m still playing with it.. More comments to come. BTW it took me a minute to figure out where the Sample Reading was.

    • Liz

Question: So is there a hierarchy to the list of meanings for each card? So for example: The first in the list is the most common phrase for that card? Or the order doesn’t really matter?
      4 Swords 3 Pent
      (1) is still (1) doing his part
      (2) sleep on it (2) on joining in
The phrases at the top of the Sample Reading post are in the order in which they appear in the sentences, and the words are not usually repeated when they appear after the initial listing. The hierarchy is in text, and the subject of the text is the relative frequency or relative importance of meanings (which is hierarchy).

    • I shall ask the techs to put that sample reading on a navigation tag, where I will post other samples.
I fixed the formatting error. Formatting is a large part of doing this material; it takes about an hour a day to create, and another at least half an hour to post.

I like it. It is very detailed and it shows all the different angles 1 card can be interpreted as. As I read the interpretations of each card it is kind of a way to see for yourself how it is obvious by viewing the card at it’s face that it all makes sense. So for instance, Four of Swords card shows someone laying down and the interpretation matches almost exactly what the picture shows.
When I read the daily spreads I always go to each card’s interpretation to get a detail view of what the cards mean. I own the Rider-Waite tarot deck and I can learn quite easily by your method.
    Thanks

This layout will be a success I feel Emily. I have been studying it and it makes good sense so far. Its clean and its clear. I enjoy this alot.

Emily I am still trucking along here with your system , I want to learn it down pat. Sometimes I have it , and then it goes out the window ! HELP! I combine 2 cards together to start sentences , and then the last card at the end fits it , and then I question , what about the middle card again?? Do I make another sentence ,.,, ARG! I have been active with this for about nearly a year. I am a reader myself. TIPS…. I feel like I am missing something here when I try to establish theme how do I do that? Im just struggling.. sometimes I have even put it aside for a bit and come back to it later, to feel refreshed. I hope there is a way for me to get this. How to establish a theme,,,, how to combine to make sentences ,,,, You are doing fabulous work Emily ! I love your system and your work dearly ! I am an ever faithful follower, I like this layout , I will study it ! Question…. When you said study 3 of pentacles as it is one of the busy cards , I did do just that. What are the other cards out there ? Perhaps some advice if a little would be helpful. Thanks so much Emily !!!!!

  5. OKAY, Y’all: Talk. Talk up. Brainstorm today about how to set up the Learn Tarot Verbatim lessons. What do you think? Here are some things about it, from me.

You don’t have to read the whole thing to get the meaning of the three cards, but it’s there. If you’re ‘stuck’ on a card, it’s there.

This is easier to do because it forces me to put out every day, and because I can use the material I just produced that is fresh in my head.

It is set up for people who are learning. The blog has a dual purpose of your daily trends, and demonstrating how Tarot Verbatim works. It’s an effort to learn to read Tarot Verbatim from the blog, but it’s doable, and you absorb how it works as you keep coming back, But the lessons, which I think I’m going to call Tarot Verbatim Face to Face, are organized to be simple so you get it quickly.

The purpose of the illustrations right next to the words is to get the ‘vibe’ of the card into your subconscious.

Okay, guys: I need to know what you think, because I’m going to sell this as an email subscription. (Any early takers here? Thirty bucks a month is the consensus price.
