GUIDANCE         Today it’s about that dog-Latin slogan we have all encountered, either “Illegitimi non carborundum” or “Noli illegitimi carborundum.” It means “Don’t let the bastards get you down” or “Don’t let the bastards grind you down.” Don’t let it get to you.  So don’t.

.

Lack for nothing at this place.

I really don’t miss my spouse.

Our family isn’t doing without.

A house that’s NOT in the ghetto.

Quit feeling inferior to everybody.

I married to not be lonely anymore.

Miserable that you don’t have family?

I’m not feeling low class; I am one of the people who count.

.

Tarot Readings: Five of Pentacles and Four of Wands

.. … ..

I don’t allow strays in my house.

A company staves off bankruptcy.

Just say ‘no’ to a miserable home life.

It is a sick building and it’s not my problem.

No way am I letting relatives wear me down.

Refuse to go to the building for sick people [hospital].

Feel sorry for my relatives and want nothing to do with them.

People who have it all are miserable when they don’t have something.

.

Tarot Readings: Four of Cups and Four of Wands

Don’t marry, you’ll be miserable.

No interest in a house in disrepair.

Don’t let those people wear you down.

Refusing to be one of those sick people.

Bummed out and don’t want to be married.

Homeless only because I don’t want a home.

Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.

Five of Pentacles I’ve been down so long it looks up to me” is Five of Pentacles’ song. This is hitting bottom. This is Dark Night of the Soul. This is having the blood sucked out of you by an energy vampire. Mother is homeless on the street with a crippled child who has leprosy, and they have no clothes or shoes against the freezing snow. They have no one; they are alone and lonely; and Five of Pentacles translates as feeling hopeless and lonely. They pass by a church which back then would have meant food and a bed … except for the leprosy. (The bell around the child’s neck indicates the leprosy.) So on they trudge.

.

So Five of Pentacles is lack, is doing without, is not having a house, not having a home life, being a stray in the ghetto. Five of Pentacles is the main card for being very sick (person or animal). Five of Pentacles is also feeling down, being miserable, feeling inferior or low class, drained and empty. Five of Pentacles also describes an object that is in a state of disrepair or is worn out: a sick house as well as sick people.

.

Five of Pentacles also represents the empty misery of missing someone – doing without the comfort of a loved one. Despair.

Four of Cups Don’t gimme that,” Four of Cups says – “Take that out of my face.” No way. Not allowed. Not letting. Don’t want it. It’s not my problem. Just say ‘no,’ and ‘What part of ‘no’ do you not understand: The ‘N’ or the ‘O’? The picture says it all, making this one of the very simple cards to apply in your spreads: an anchor card par excellence.  As a negator card, Four of Cups will translate just about any negative word.

.

He crosses his arms. He turns his face away. He even crosses his legs and sits down. The picture tells you everything you need to know. Once in a while Four of Cups translates “The buck stops here.”

Four of Wands House and home, family and relatives, groups of people (or other living things – the flock, the herd) from the couple to neighborhood-city-county-state-region-nation-international. It starts with the couple and it escalates over the whole globe. Four of Wands is ‘those people’ and ‘one of those people.’ It is about being a member and it is about the ‘them’ who don’t belong to the ‘us.’

.

But it means ‘the public’ and refers to public buildings and public organizations like corporations, companies. It even refers to a given race as a group, or a given religion as a group, or even a given class of people as a group.

.

The illustration here is of an outdoor celebration of a public wedding of community celebrities: the mayor’s daughter is marrying the sheriff’s son, and the peasants are part of the picture of the power structure, so let them eat cake. Four of Wands’ main meaning is this couple, marriage, family, relatives and clan application. It is also about gatherings of people (any group or organization of course) for mutual purposes that are productive to society. (Four of Wands is not your card for a riot.)

.

Four of Wands expands to mean ‘everybody,’ ‘us,’ and ‘them.’ It will also say phrases that express that same thing, phrases like: one of the people who; those people; people who have it all.

.

As a building, Four of Wands has the same progression, from the individual house or apartment to public buildings. Watch for it to name a building in your story by attaching to another card that represents what the building is used for, as it does today with ‘hospital’ being ‘building for sick people’ – Four of Wands and Five of Pentacles.

.

P. S. again: All three marriage cards (Four of Wands, Ten of Cups and Ten of Pentacles) expand the same way you see Four of Wands do here.

.

.

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

                LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

.

. ….. ..

Four of Wands is a group of people, a marriage or couple, a home life. Five of Pentacles is being drained of life, miserable, and doing without. In between them is a figure who clearly is not going to let this happen, who is saying ‘ no’ to that. So you immediately feel the ‘I’m not going to let them get to me’ of this spread. (Remember that Four of Wands calls down plural pronouns like ‘ them.’ With Four of Wands as family, you can feel someone rejecting a bloodsucking family. Or rejecting any bunch of people who are victimizing or draining (you).

.

Four of Wands is the public and represents any level of government, is any group of people, so these three cards even say the taxpayers are sick of being drained. So our story is also about rejecting ‘ them’ and ‘ it,’ an organization.

.

Rejecting in Four of Cups is ‘ not having anything to do with.’ And Five of Pentacles is to miss someone (or even something, at times). And here comes Four of Wands as spouse. So I do not miss my spouse.

.

Their misery is not my problem: That’s another rejection of a group of people. Four of Cups is ‘ not’ and Five of Pentacles is misery. Four of Wands makes it say ‘ their’ misery, because it can call pronouns into your sentence – just not usually possessive ones like this.

.

Five of Pentacles and Four of Cups picture the ‘ I’m not going to live like this anymore’ that hitting bottom brings a person to. I am not going to be broke or bankrupt. Rejecting the ghetto. Quit ( Four of Cups) feeling inferior ( Five of Pentacles) to other people ( Four of Wands) – or to everybody ( Four of Wands).

.

Four of Cups as a negator translates ‘to not be’ so I married ( Four of Wands) to not be ( Four of Cups) lonely( Five of Pentacles) anymore … or to not be broke anymore.

.

Five of Pentacles is being sorry for yourself. (And, yes, there are times when we deserve some sympathy from ourselves.) So no way am I going to be ( Four of Cups) sorry for myself ( Five of Pentacles) about the house ( Four of Wands) – which would be a story about not being able to get ( not being able to buy) that house.

.

Lack for nothing’ is an odd translate for Five of Pentacles, the lack, and Four of Cups, ‘ no way.’ I am not ( Four of Cups) doing without ( Five of Pentacles) where I am ( Four of Wands as ‘place’) is what ‘ lack for nothing at this place’ is saying, more formally.

.

Feeling sorry for ( Five of Pentacles) relatives ( Four of Wands) that you want nothing to do with ( Four of Cups). That’s another angle on the sentiments our spread expresses. And (I appreciate this one!) People who have it all ( Four of Wands as the community leaders) are miserable ( Five of Pentacles) when they don’t get something ( Four of Cups).

.

When Four of Wands is a house, someone has no interest in ( Four of Cups) that fixer-upper, the house ( Four of Wands) that’s in disrepair ( Five of Pentacles). Or, ‘Be it ever so humble’ ( Five of Pentacles in disrepair again) there’s no ( Four of Cups) place like home ( Four of Wands).

.

Five of Pentacles is sick people. Four of Cups is refusing to be. And Four of Wands of course is ‘ one of those people.’ So I refuse to be one of those sickly people.

.

Four of Cups and Four of Wands say ‘ don’t want to be married.’ So I’m bummed out ( Five of Pentacles) and don’t want to be married, or I got married because I did not want to be miserable.

.

You can see the variety of things here that three cards can express. Like I have said before (and will again): The question is half the answer or more, along with the ‘knowns’ that have developed in the previous spreads or in the history or the background of the question.

. …..      ..

.

.

I got where I am today because I wanted no part of the ghetto. And I didn’t marry because I don’t want to be miserable. And I am healthy because of how I reject being sick. Today I ponder how realizing what we don’t want, and acting on that, gets us what we do want – that it’s no small factor, really.
