Ten of PentaclesPeople who have a problem or people who are a problem. Dysfunctional people, dysfunctional home or work life. Those people. Disagreeable bunch of people who don’t get along. An unsavory organization – gang, organized crime, politics, etc.

.

You see a family feud or disagreement, a generational one. Wife tries to talk to husband who stares into space away from her, as kid pulls on her clothes and squalls (probably because kid senses the tensions in the air). Grandpa, on the other hand, is perched regally on his throne, with the dogs to back him up. (I think Grandpa wants another kid, a son do doubt, to extend his dominion.)

Seven of WandsIn this illustration, a landowner is attacked, outnumbered and surprised, by neighbors. Seven of Wands is about either defending the turf, or being a mouthy nuisance: both scenarios are common for this Rider Waite Tarot card. Today, with Ten of Pentacles already having introduced family strife as the theme, Seven of Wands fits in both ways: pushy interference, and not letting yourself be affected. Today Seven of Wands is mostly the resistance.

Eight of Swords I think, when I see Eight of Swords: Can’t, or can’t-itis? You see a dame bound and blindfolded in a swamp. So ‘stymied’ clearly belongs to Eight of Swords. But she’s still standing, and the ties are very loose, and the big heavy swords are stuck in the mud by only their tips. There’s a house up there on the hill. So Eight of Swords (which can be the actual death card, the one that introduces the topic, in Tarot Verbatim) can be about only thinking you’re helpless, or being your own obstacle. Either way, it’s about limitations. After all, people say ‘My hands are tied’ when they don’t want to do something, don’t they?

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

                  LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

.

. ….. .    .

If you look at our story, Eight of Swords is the mama in Ten of Pentacles who can’t do anything about what the men of the family are up to; she is powerless. (And Seven of Wands is the men who push her around and intimidate her.) Eight of Swords depicts a female figure blindfolded, loosely bound with hands behind her, in a swamp, surrounded by swords. Limitations. This is about not being able to do anything, about ‘ can’t.’ It can mean being helpless, ‘ my hands are tied,’ being stymied, being disabled or paralysis of any sort, and it can mean locked up (objects, animals or people). Eight of Swords can refer to anything in a box or can refer to that box we all want to think out of. Eight of Swords is the actual death card in Tarot Verbatim: Today ‘There’s a death in the family’ with Ten of Pentacles as family.

.

Sometimes the point of Eight of Swords is the fact the bonds are loose, no one’s around her, and the weapons are stuck in the ground. Sometimes – as today – the point is about limitations, about ‘ can’t.’ That a favorite Eight-of-Swords word, can’t. But watch for this limitations card to pair up with a ‘ pressure’ card like Seven of Wands, and you get ‘ can’t let them do that to me’ and ‘ They cannot intimidate me.’ And the ‘ they’ and the them’ is Ten of Pentacles. Ten of Pentacles can translate as the tone of voice we use when we say ‘those people’ or ‘ them’ or ‘ they’ in a pejorative way, a disparaging way.

.

It’s a little puzzling that Eight of Swords is ‘ prevented from,’ but can translate as a verb ‘ prevent’ or even ‘ won’t allow,’ when Eight of Swords is really more ‘ not allowed.’

.

So our spread says ‘noli illegitimi carborundum’ or ‘ Illegitimi Non Carborundum,’ dog-Latin for ‘ Don’t let the bastards wear you down’ or ‘ Don’t let the bastards grind you down.’

Well sometimes what holds me back is sucking me in – like family ties, and the backgrounds I was born into – and sometimes what holds me back is in my face as an obstacle. Pushback is in order either way.
