Three of our four Rider Waite Tarot citizens involve the same thing: keeping something away.
The fourth means something’s coming in.
Page of Swords is determined to keep everything away. Four of Pentacles is keeping what he has from everyone and everything. World is sealed from anything getting to her.
Page of Swords’ guard is up – is alarmed to guard against (the environment), and is feeling vulnerable. World, on the other hand, is invulnerable and is guarding against the environment effortlessly.
Four of Pentacles and Three of Wands both refer to money. Four of Pentacles is holding onto it. For Three of Wands, it’s coming in.

You could say the first three cards equal the fourth: Page of Swords and Four of Pentacles and Three of Wands equal World: “I am not letting anything that’s coming around me get to me.” Plainly, our story is about security.
LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

Page of Swords is on guard, defending, is anxious regarding some ill-defined threat. This is the ‘free-floating anxiety’ or paranoia the psychologists speak of. He represents a security guard or soldier on guard too of course. The card really refers to the bodily state (adrenalin) of being anxious or thrilled or excited or threatened, or even irritated. It’s the ‘something’s out there’ feeling. The illustration shows a young fellow all nerved up, hair flying, weapon brandished … and nothing is around him for maybe miles.
Four of Pentacles holds on for dear life. Holding a secret. Holding money. Holding himself back from and not admitting. Stifling him/her- self. Illustration shows a fellow outside of town holding onto the money and hunkered down.
Three of Wands is clearly saying ‘Ships coming in.’ A man stands watching the approach of ships. It means ‘coming in the future.’ It means ‘income’ or ‘incoming’ or ‘coming,’ and also simply puts another card’s verb into future tense.
World is really about the security that being a spiritual master bequeaths. Of course, there’s not that many questions along those lines, so the common meaning of World is that nothing gets through. She is in a world of her own. No harm comes to her as if she were invisible. World describes the ‘dances to a different drummer’ kind of person … and this card does not refer just to females. Illustration shows a nude female with two wands wearing a scarf dancing in a world of her own while all sorts of evil critters are outside looking the other way.
