………………………….. Temperance is kind of an artificial card in Rider Waite, I think. It is one of those that was added in the Middle Ages to deflect the murderous wrath of the Roman Catholic empire upon Tarot users as witches. The illustration shows an angel with healing symbols on his chest pouring water and wine together to dilute the wine, considered an act of piety so you won’t get drunk from the wine. So this card should mean dilution, which it almost never does – healing, which it sometimes does – and angelic intervention, which it very seldom does. Except for today. Today, it is next to Tower, whose formal meaning (also seldom used) is destruction of evil. So today we have a destroying angel, and it’s the winter solstice.
The normal everyday meanings for Temperance are intimacy, dealing with, partners or close friends or buddies or intimate partners, healing, a flow of water, and sometimes a back-and-forth reciprocating as in a negotiation.
………………………….. Tower shows the Tower of Babel, a landmark event in very ancient human history. The Tower is presented as an attempt by humans to keep the same language and stay in touch as one culture as population growth spread them over an uncomfortable distance. The building of the tower is somehow is interpreted as rebellion against God too – you know, pride. Well, the skyscraper was dramatically destroyed, which seems to be an established historical fact. God did it, the Bible says, but the story started in ancient Babylon according to what I read decades ago and don’t remember any more than that.
Tower’s normal everyday meanings are: divorce, quitting or being fired, schism in a group, confrontation, breaking or broken, destroying or destroyed, damage to or destruction of a building, breakthrough, break-up, temper tantrum or meltdown, drama, eviction, foreclosure, shock or surprise, sudden, unexpected, a thought or inspiration striking.
………………………….. Three of Wands you would like in every spread. The illustration speaks for itself: It screams ‘Your ship coming in.’ A well-dressed fellow watches as ships come into port. He is a merchant, and the cargo is his, or is his profit, or both. Unfortunately, a printer’s blunder which was never corrected in several Rider Waite cards, of yellow being applied, makes the water here a desert instead. Duh.
Three of Wands is a pluralizer card; it refers to the future. It often calls up a gerund (the ‘-ing’ form of a verb), and often adds to the sentence: in the future, continuing, will be, coming in, will come, and similar phrases and words.
Three of Wands refers to income and profit and money coming in. By extension, it refers to a good future, to good things happening … not just pie-in-the-sky good things, but things you can eyeball and count upon. It expresses an optimistic outlook.
……….………….. Temperance and Tower Temperance and Tower you don’t often see together because much of what they represent is not ordinary. The usual story these two tell is a divorce or split-up between intimate friends, lovers or partners – or a confrontation face-to-face, or a temper tantrum of one of the parties to a relationship. Using the ‘drama’ spectrum of Tower as the word ‘dramatic,’ you can read ‘dramatic healing.’ Using the ‘seizure’ meaning of Tower, you can read ‘healing of a seizure.’ Using the ‘sudden, unexpected’ spectrum of Tower’s meanings, you can read ‘sudden unexpected intimacy.’x..

Temperance ……… Temperance shows an angel with healing symbols on his chest pouring water and wine together to dilute the wine. By the illustration, Temperance should apply to dilution, healing and angelic contacts. It hardly ever does. Tarot Verbatim™’s meanings are ‘from the field,’ are real experience in real questions’ answers. Those meanings for Temperance are mainly close relationship between two parties – whether business deals, social, romantic love, negotiation – whatever. Temperance also translates intimacy, dealing with, partners or close friends or buddies or intimate partners – in other words naming the parties instead of the action. Temperance also does mean healing, does mean a flow of water, and does describe any back-and-forth reciprocal communication, which includes emails and such. Because that’s the Tower of Babel history, the formal meaning is ‘destruction of evil,’ which rarely happens … except for today. The most common application for Tower is divorce, clash, confrontation, quitting or being fired, break-up. Next comes the ‘eruption’ meanings, the emotional ones being temper tantrum, meltdown, drama, shock. Then we have the physical destruction meanings of breaking or broken, destroying or destroyed, damage to or destruction of any kind of a building. By extension, Tower also appears for foreclosure, eviction, losing your house or home, and bankruptcy. Tower also is about suddenness – sudden, unexpected, surprise, and a thought or inspiration striking … and a breakthrough. Watch for the ‘breakthrough’ meaning because it comes unexpectedly.

Three of Wands ……… Three of Wands I don’t need to tell you the meaning of. You see he is waiting (one of its meanings, by the way) for his ship to come in, and it’s a sure thing because he is looking at the ships. He is a merchant and the ships bring him stock and profit, one or both. Three of Wands is one of the future and future tense cards that make a reading optimistic. It means continuing action too, not just future action. It means money coming in, profit and income. Steady income, because it’s not just a one-time profit Three of Wands refers to. Three of Wands can translate ‘the future.’
