Six of Swords
Six of Swords is getting away from and going to, gradually – phasing out of one and into another. It could refer to places, phases of life, bodily states, anything. Often it’s relocating: The illustration shows refugees leaving at twilight. It’s about improving: The situation behind is so miserable that the situation ahead is better, so the main application is: in the process, and progress.
Today Six of Swords accompanies Ace of Pentacles which is a road, and which means good or perfect, so we use a lot of the ‘going’ meanings of Six of Swords: trip, going, go out, go to, on the way to, go out of your way, go off, go toward. We also use the ‘better times ahead’ words for Six of Swords: put the past year behind and go to; from now on; not anymore; and ‘ahead.’
Six of Swords can accent leaving the place, person, or thing; and Six of Swords can accent going to the better scene. But it can also accent the trip or journey itself – the process. Today those words include: in the process of; gradually, as time goes by, and ‘after all you have been through.’
Ace of Pentacles
Ace of Pentacles is a diagram of the idea that success and money go along with being good, being ‘on the right track.’ The gold is held over the gold path. Lilies in front for ‘purity’ (good); a victory trellis or arbor where the path ends. People act like they believe this over all the world and in all times: The rich guy is a good guy. Ace of Pentacles is a simple card if you apply this concept.
Key words for Ace of Pentacles are: Good, perfect, great; financial, pay, yours/mine, money, and ‘got’ or ‘have’ meaning ‘possess’ or possession’; right, perfect; road; success. Five categories. That’s it, pretty much.
Temperance
Temperance is a simple card too. It’s a relationship card about reciprocating (getting back to you), communication, and closeness or intimacy. It often means two people … in all kinds of ways … dealing with each other or dealing with others.
Its only orphan meaning is healing, and that’s due to a symbol on the chest of the angel. (By the way, it hardly ever means the angel, hardly ever means dilution, or anything about the wine. But TODAY is a red letter day (It’s New Year’s after all). Since the subject of the reading is New Year’s, the decanting of the wine becomes literal. Take a good look. That’s the first time since 1980 for me.

Ace of Swords – You know this is about victory, winning, championship, domination, force, weapon, and not about much else just looking at this drawing. And you’re right of course. The crown which crowns the sword is crowned in its turn by the laurel leaves of victory.

One of Ace of Swords’ most common translates is not that obvious though: absolute and absolutely. That’s because this victory is so total that there’s total defeat on the other side. So ‘total’ also belongs to Ace of Swords.

And I guess ‘must’ and its synonyms are not that obvious either, although ‘force’ implies it. When you put Ace of Swords next to Ace of Pentacles, you get ‘must have,’ because Ace of Pentacles is possession (naturally).

That blade will bring up surgery too. Today, Temperance’s ‘healing’ meaning emphasizes this side of Ace of Swords.

Here are today’s Ace of Swords translates, minus the ones we have mentioned already: win first, intimidate, aggressively, is in full control, as _ as you can get, is sure to be, 100% (a good one to remember), win, is an accomplishment.
Ace of Pentacles – You see a hand with money in it, and you see that idyllic path matching the gold in the hand … and the lilies and the rose trellis of victory, so you get the idea of winning financially, right? Sure. This Rider Waite Tarot card means all those things. It means perfect; it means prize, it means anything about money; it means ‘right’ because of that straight path; it means optimum, and success, and best, and ‘yes.’
Temperance – This card does not divulge the meanings it actually uses, in my experience. The deck could easily do without this one in my opinion. The blending of the wine and water is expressed as intimacy and communication, and as reciprocal dealing. It also shows up to represent healing because of a symbol on the angel’s chest.

Temperance often translates as together, togetherness, close relationship, two people who are standing together or companions or partners, and people who are in agreement. Forms of the word ‘deal’ belong strongly to Temperance to – and ‘mutual.’

It ought to mean dilution and not drinking alcohol. I am still waiting and it’s been over forty years already. Maybe it’s just me?

The first thing to take away from reading this if you do your own Tarot is that Ace of Swords (must) and Ace of Pentacles (to possess) say ‘must have.’ That’s easy to miss. Today, Temperance makes that say ‘Must have a close relationship.’ Ace of Swords can add ‘must’ to any verb another card contributes. (You could put Ace of Swords down, and put each card in the deck next to it, and see how consistently that card applies to most of them as ‘must.’)

Ace of Swords often says ‘absolutely,’ which sometimes functions as strengthening the card it applies that to. So today the ‘perfect’ of Ace of Pentacles becomes ‘absolutely perfect‘ or ‘absolute perfection.’
