Nine of Wands – Devil – Page of Pentacles

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING and

.………..………. .……..…….. Nine of Wands and Page of Pentacles both involve the head, and both are self-conscious in different ways. Nine of Wands has a head wound, and is nervous, edgy and fearful of the return of what hurt him once before. Nine of Wands is concerned about himself, about his safety – with good reason. Page of Pentacles is also concerned – is thinking – about himself. But Page of Pentacles is doing fine and looking good – is consciously projecting a good image.

Nine of Wands and Devil both can mean feeling guilty and/or being fearful, nervous, or almost any bad feeling. They both can mean injury, and both can mean a big problem. Nine of Wands is saying ‘Uh-oh’ sometimes.

Devil of course is any bad attitude or vice or disability, and Devil is flanked on the left by dread and concern for the future (Nine of Wands), and on the right by ‘considering my own part in this’ (Page of Pentacles). Here’s a picture of introspection about ‘it being my fault.’

HOWEVER, in the general application of our spread, Page of Pentacles is ‘thinking’ and ‘thinking about it,’ so the angst and the threat of Nine of Wands, as well as the difficulty of Devil, can be ‘in the head,’ can be about guilt, about defensive attitudes about one’s faults, etc. Notice how Page of Pentacles here today in our spread is a ‘rescue card.’

Mostly our stories are about living with a serious problem, and being concerned about it, having it on our mind.

Nine of Wands…… Nine of Wands’ headline meaning is ‘hanging in there.’ Sometimes, it is advice to do that. Not today, not with Devil next to him! Nine of Wands is the wounded soldier, the border guard still on duty with a head wound, in dread of another skirmish, so it can be about a serious difficulty or a threat or anxiety that is constant. Some Nine of Wands words are: under pressure, tense or tension, harassment, hurt feelings, putting up with it, sweating it out, cornered, trapped, a standoff, worrying, standing up for and defending your position, constant anxiety and tension. You can consider Nine of Wands chronic. Nine of Wands and Devil could be a chronic (serious) ailment, even.

Neither doom nor relief is promised in Nine of Wands. Nine of Wands is usually when there’s nothing in it for you and you are sick of it, but you hang in there. Nine of Wands is being accused (even by yourself) or feeling that way, feeling guilty. Nine of Wands is not getting a divorce and living in some kind of torment, or staying at a job you hate, are used to, and are paid halfway well – staying when your gut is screaming ‘Why?’

Yes, once in a while Nine of Wands is advice to hang in there – but you need a whole different spread for that. Once in a while he is a wounded soldier, a soldier on duty, or a guard.

Devil……..Devil is a very general card, never an anchor, lead, card. It can mean ‘evil’ but isn’t a scary card. It means problem, difficulty, the downside of anything, wrong, disability, bad, awful, guilty, fault, addicted, attached, downside or dark side, undesirable traits of any kind, rude, dislike or hate, sex or sexual, miserable, oppressed, bad mood, feeling bad, pain, hurt, miserable, and words about sickness like illness, ailment and malignant. It can say ‘ugly’ too. It can be derogatory terms for people – like riffraff, thug, lowlife, scum-ball, etc. As a matter of fact, along with Moon, Devil can invite cuss words into your readings. (Both these cards qualify for ‘damned’ literally in their meanings.)

Devil also simply says ‘physical’ and means any sort of physical attachment (clip, clasp, hitch, tie, etc.). It often means obligation or obliged. Its ‘addiction’ meaning extends to any bad habit, so watch for any card that means getting out of, putting it behind, or getting over it to turn Devil into a plus. There are a LOT of these cards, a plethora of them.

Devil’s illustration in Rider Waite is lifted straight out of Middle Ages lore, with added black magic and satanic symbols. Middle Ages had the devil hairy and ugly, with horns and bat wings, and associated with sex. That’s Adam and Eve, of course, loosely chained to the pedestal he squats upon. The torch held upside-down means ‘wrong use of force’ or energy put into hurtful or harmful things.

Page of Pentacles……… Page of Pentacles lets the air out of the tires of its companion cards here today. He is a part-time relief card today. He means thinking, feeling, self, an opinion or a perspective on something. He means ‘mental.’ (That makes ‘mentally disabled’ with Devil.) Page of Pentacles is also the young well-intentioned man who studies (is a student) things, sees things, and who is – identity. So you could say ‘He is guilty’ or ‘He feels guilty’ or even ‘He is looking guilty,’ since Devil means ‘guilty’ and Nine of Wands can be feeling guilty. The presence of Page of Pentacles as the good guy in a three-card spread prevents some of the undesirable interpretations this spread could have.

Having pressured myself for so long to project this good clean image, I feel dirty by comparison. I feel I’m not who I pretend to be. Yeah, I know everybody is doing the same thing, and that’s what makes us get along as well as we do, and that’s what makes civilization. But I itch to air out my whole self – be who I am – which includes my dark side, you know? The question hanging in the air here is … ‘What if we all did that?’

Our spread features contrasts – cards meaning opposite things.

Knight of Cups and Devil Knight of Cups is the good guy and devil is the bad guy. Knight of Cups is polite and helpful; Devil is rude and nasty. Knight of Cups is affectionate; Devil is hateful.

Knight of Cups and Fool Knight of Cups accepts suggestions; Fool disregards them.

Devil and Fool Devil is attached, even addicted; Fool is entirely free. Devil is guilty or wrong; Fool is an innocent naif.

Fool and Page of Pentacles Fool is subconscious; Page of Pentacles is conscious thought. Fool is ‘not present’ or absent, and does not care or is oblivious; Page of Pentacles is identity, is the one who (whatever), is there in person. Fool is devil-may-care; Page of Pentacles is self-conscious.

Devil and Page of Pentacles Devil has a bad attitude and Page of Pentacles a good one. Devil is ill-intentioned, ugly and rude; Page of Pentacles is the young presentable fellow who is politely fitting in to the social scene.

Knight of Cups and Page of Pentacles however, are the same type of person: young polite socially acceptable fellows.

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

.

Knight of Cups The agreeable, affectionate young man who takes initiative to put you at ease and make peace is the Boyfriend card in Rider Waite Tarot Verbatim. His horse isn’t like those others: Its mane is artfully coiffed, its head is down, it is relaxed, a back and a front leg are raised which horses do when they are just standing around, and it is gray and gentle and cute. The knight wears Mercury’s wings on his helmet (the messenger) and leans back in the saddle offering you a drink. The sky is pale blue, the world is pastel.

 

Devil What you see is mostly what you get with this Rider Waite Tarot card. Its main message is that vices that bind you to the nether domain (represented by the loose chains around the necks of the human subjects) are removable by you, that if you are living in some bad scene, you can get yourself out of it. But its meanings in a reading are things like rude, nasty, dirty, lout, lust, hate/hateful, fault, dark side, addiction, illness or disease, brutality, abusive. It means obligation and attachment as well. It simply means physical once in a while.

 

Fool is entirely free, lighthearted, optimistic, naïve and young. While the illustration shows a silly young dude prancing off with no provisions running away from home with his little equally silly dog, the deeper meaning of the card is that a spiritually advanced person disregards sensible self-interest and lives in faith out of the spiritual realm. What Fool is free of is the whole physical system, the world. Which echoes the concept behind the last Major Arcanae, World. (Fool is, of course, the first Major Arcanae, with zero as the number.) But he is often positioned as the very last card too.

 

Page of Pentacles refers to the self, to thinking about and having a concept or opinion consciously. This is a real-world person who is young and learning, so it sometimes stands for a theory or working hypothesis. Reminds you of Knight of Pentacles, who also contemplates the pentacle; but Knight is a bit of a brute and ‘has one thing on his mind’ whereas Page is young and open-minded.

Okay, the good thing about this sad spread is: There is no action. It is all feeling and opinion.

 

 

Anything that starts with the Devil is likely to have some negativity, ya think? Slide that Magician in next to His Badness, and you get acting out evil … and then there’s Page of Pentacles – a person’s intentions and thoughts. And then Four of Wands directs the thinking and action to a group – family (or spouse), Company or Corporation, or government entity including nation.

 

 

Looking at it from another angle, you have a person (Page of Pentacles) who identifies himself as being a member (Four of Wands) of some group, and then apply that to acting out of (Magician) hate (Devil). This is the ‘Us vs. Them’ human habit. It also, of course, refers to hating family (Devil as hate, Four of Wands as family).

 

 

Lighthearted messages are hard to come by when these four get together. There are some even darker things you could make of this spread which I have ignored,  such as black magic (Devil and Magician),  such as identifying with evil (Page of Pentacles and Devil),  such as incest (Devil as lust or sex and Four of Wands as family) and so on.

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

Devil Besides the obvious, Devil is about limitation and attachment, about the lowest form of (anything). It is a very ambiguous (unclear) card that sometimes just means attachment. Not all its meanings are distasteful. Here are the phrases it lends to our sentences today, in a column so you can scan them easily:

Magician is as singleminded in its meanings as Devil is scattered. As the male principle card (The male principle is action, being active.) it means ‘he.’ As the action card, we can conjugate the verbs ‘do,’ ‘make’ and ‘create’ (meaning bring down, bring about), and have most of his meanings. (The female principle card is High Priestess. That is about receptivity and knowing, being passive, being the receiver, being behind the scenes, holding secret abilities.)

 

 

 

Page of Pentacles can represent a male (most often) or female.  It can represent a thought or thinking, an opinion or a study of.  It can represent identity or being identified as,  or identifying oneself as.  Those are its main focus.  The illustration in Rider Waite is a young person who intently examines the held-aloft pentacle.

 

 

 

 

Four of Wands depicts a wedding,  in Rider Waite Tarot,  of two leading families –  say a noble or royal wedding.  This is a public display,  which brings community life into its meaning.  It stands for group,  for powerful groups of families (companies, corporations).  It obviously means marriage, spouse, family. It’s also anything from neighborhood to nation that one can be part of. Four of Wands is the ‘Us’ of ‘Us and Them.’

Well … what to do: The Question for weekdays is: “Tell the visitors here something useful and meaningful to them.” The Question for weekends is usually stated right on top on those days. (Some days are ‘keep an eye open for’ and some days are ‘green light, go fast.’) *Go to Advice to apply what those sentences say for you. (Advice is everyone’s favorite part.) Did you come here for your predictions? – You are done now – See you tomorrow. Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things especially when the Spread has a card that negates other cards. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. The question in a ‘real’ individual reading supplies at least half the information!
