Eight of Swords
Eight of Swords is limitations – different kinds of limitations. It famously says ‘can’t.’ There’s a distinction here: Eight of Swords covers limitations within, and Eight of Swords covers limitations from (or in) the environment. Eight of Swords is the card, therefore, for a hopeless situation, and for being helpless.
Always remember when Eight of Swords shows up that this is the card for ‘learned helplessness.’ This is the card for people who wear ‘I can’t’ as a badge and are into martyrdom. (This could be you, this could be me, and of course it’s about a scene, a situation, and doesn’t often refer to one’s essence, one’s primary psyche.) A perceived limitation is an actual limitation because you believe it. This idea is expressed in the illustration by the fact that – like in Devil – the ties that bind the person(s) are loose, and can be removed by the person.
Eight of Swords is the primary card meaning ‘jail’ and meaning ‘death,’ which does not have to refer to the death of something living, but to the death, end, or stifling of an idea, a regime, etc.

Eight of Cups
In the middle of the night, a pilgrim detours his course because of a mountain and river, but this is a temporary change of course: He will resume his path to his destination. Elements of this story make unexpected words and phrases, potentially, in your Tarot interpretation.
The ‘off of one course and onto another’ category of meanings for Eight of Cups include such phrases today as: going off-road; nearly; switch from one to another; go on to something else. This ‘off of one course and onto another’ also brings us phrases such as these: now you are out of; leaving _ behind; get out of; quit, circumvent; avoiding, a way around or a way out; another way, and get out of.
Quite often, in your Tarot work, it’s the abrupt and without notice change that Eight of Cups translates as. To quit without notice, to go A.W.O.L, or any abrupt unannounced change.
Two of Wands
You need to know the story this illustration tells to apply Two of Wands with the grace and distinction it deserves. Here’s the story: The dude with the globe in his right hand owns all the real estate below, and he is a banker/mortgage broker/real estate mogul/investor type person who is planning how to make more money from his holdings. He is already successful, is financially secure with a great financial outlook. He is an Establishment type, a respectable citizen, and this plan of his is a certainty. So Two of Wands translates ‘for sure’ and ‘certainty.’
Two of Wands is a real estate card. It’s about investment and pension type things. But don’t think that Two of Wands just applies to being wealthy or important. It does apply to being respectable.
Two of Wands’ main function is the future and future tense. Most often, it translates ‘will’ and ‘will be’ and similar phrases. It also translates ‘the future’ or ‘in the future.’ It refers to a good future – today, to a hopeful future (the same thing).
Another frequent translate for Two of Wands is the plan or planning.
Two of Wands also commonly refers to ‘long term.’ Since it strongly means planning, you have a long term plan with Two of Wands as well as a financial plan. This suggests pension.

Here’s the movie these three Tarot cards make: Eight of Swords, allowing yourself to be boxed in, limited, or stymied. Eight of Cups, abruptly getting out of that, leaving that behind – just quitting. Two of Wands, now that you have taken control, your future is assured.
This same message is presented in different scenarios over and over here. The main meaning of each card is used in each story, which indicates a basic powerful presentation.
Although none of the cards say ‘thinking,’ Eight of Swords and Eight of Cups enact no longer thinking in the box but getting out of that. Eight of Swords and Eight of Cups say ‘Quit letting (my)self be limited.’ They say basically there’s a way out of an impossible situation, an impasse, limitations, a way out of being stifled and stymied – an abrupt or immediate way out. (Think ’50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,’ a song.)
Besides the direct ‘Get out of the box’ examples above, Eight of Swords and Eight of Cups say the same general thing in a different way. They describe breaking the mold, circumventing an impasse, a near-death experience, running off the road and getting stuck.
And strangely enough the same two cards that say all these freedom-loving things also say: Can’t quit. That’s because Eight of Swords is ‘can’t’ and Eight of Cups is quitting. (The literal language-based system of Tarot Verbatim™ does this. The system is very flexible, and this is a byproduct of that.)
Here are some other things Eight of Swords and Eight of Cups talk about, and they apply to one’s internal life rather than to external limitations: not helpless anymore, not hopeless anymore. In case that’s not clear, Eight of Cups means ‘not anymore,’ and means this often!
Eight of Swords and Two of Wands combine hopeless with hopeful. The impossible takes longer, they say, because ‘impossible’ is a great translate for Eight of Swords fairly often, and Two of Wands is long term.
Here you see being in a tight spot financially, or money being tied up, or a dead-end investment, since Eight of Swords is stymied or ‘tied up’ and Two of Wands is about financial matters including investments.
Forever keep in mind that Two of Wands most of the time (tiresomely, even) will be saying ‘will,’ ‘will be,’ and other such future phrases – and that it translates ‘future’ as well. Today with Eight of Swords it says ‘will be shut down’ and ‘will get stuck.’ Note that getting stuck, since Eight of Cups is about both being on a road and about a detour, can refer to a vehicle going off road and getting stuck, or refer to a person ‘getting stuck’ in a situation.
So Eight of Swords and Two of Wands can say ‘will not be able to,’ or can say ‘there will be nothing you can do.’ Using ‘wealth’ for Two of Wands, they can say ‘will not make money’ or ‘Can’t get wealthy.’ However, the three-card spread we have here strongly is a movie of being stuck, getting out, and doing well – a continuum. It is against the flow to put a negative spin on their messages, absent a question that puts them into that context.
‘Can’t be’ or ‘will not be’ are Eight of Swords and Two of Wands. Eight of Swords is the ‘can’t,’ of course, and Two of Wands is the future. These simple short meanings for two cards together are so easy to overlook! And remind yourself that the ‘can’t be’ or ‘will not be’ is as easily a good thing as a bad one, depending on the context the other cards make.
Eight of Swords, you know by now, is a brake. We take the brake off when the next two cards we are looking at don’t include Eight of Swords.
Eight of Cups and Two of Wands say there will be a way out, or say (whoever) will get out or will leave. Eight of Cups is a switch (from one route to another), so with Two of Wands you get alternative income. Eight of Cups and Two of Wands commonly say these things: on to something else, will go another way, will switch.
Alternative income belongs to Eight of Cups and Two of Wands too. Eight of Cups is about ‘alternative’ since it’s detouring to go another way. Two of Wands is the money as usual.
Most of our sentences tell of getting out of that tight spot and having a better future because of the better future in Two of Wands as that relates to being in the stifling bad place of Eight of Swords. Without Two of Wands flashing such hope, the other two cards could tell the reverse of that story. Eight of Swords and Eight of Cups as easily read suddenly getting trapped as they do a quick exit from the trap.
