Ten of Pentacles

If you train yourself to react to Ten of Pentacles as ‘People who have a problem or people who ARE a problem,’ you have a grip on its many applications. You can also think of the tone of voice in which you say ‘THOSE people.’ Those bad guys: Them. The issue can be interpersonal (you and another person); can be family; can be any group of people at all; and can be national or international – those foreigners, for instance.

One thing to keep in mind about this ‘dysfunctional people’ Tarot card is that it’s an equal opportunity disparager: It applies equally to low class pain-in-the-butt folks and high class pain-in-the-butt folks. It is about the ghetto or the boardroom.

Ten of Pentacles is the ‘negative marriage card.’ Marriage cards also apply to groups of people of any size that have something in common. Ten of Pentacles is the Bad Guy groups. The ‘positive marriage cards’ are Four of Wands, which shows a scene of a public wedding of the ruling class, and Ten of Cups, which shows a ‘happily ever after’ scene of a prosperous couple with kids. They are the Good Guy groups.

Eight of Swords

Eight of Swords is in a bind. Eight of Swords describes being trapped, ‘hands are tied,’ and even ‘tied up,’ time-wise. There’s just no way; it’s impossible . Eight of Swords is when you are … or when you feel … helpless. Or surrounded. Boxed in. Limited. Handicapped. Unable. The fight isn’t in you. You feel, or you are, weak – or too weak for a particular situation. You are a victim. The atmosphere is stifling. You are stymied, usually by a person … who is usually overbearing … or by a situation.

Eight of Swords says what limits a person is his or her own perceptions – as Devil does, with its loose bindings. Note her bindings are loose; that heavy swords are put just a little ways into swampy soil, so even if they were a threat standing up, they aren’t for long; that she is totally alone … no one around should she wish to shed those binding ribbons.

 

 

 

Ten of Cups

What a contrast between this card and its tablemates here. These people are happily-ever-after married with children and full-fledged members of the community. Everybody likes everybody and everybody is on the same page in Ten of Cups. Ten of Cups is the good guys, the functional people, and is the dream home in the (gated) community. Ten of Cups (like Ace of Pentacles) illustrates that the Good People are the Well-off People.

 

 

 

 

 

 

You see Ten of Pentacles (people who are trouble; people who have trouble) with Eight of Swords (stuck, can’t, disabled) and you think ‘Uh-oh. This can’t be good.’ Then you see Ten of Cups, and you think … ‘But it IS good. Hmm.’

Ten of Pentacles and Eight of Swords are a family background that holds you back; are about being stuck in a bad neighborhood or a bad marriage – and are a lot of other problematical situations.

The other cards strangely don’t relate to one another well at all. You have to dig for language that matches them. For example, Ten of Pentacles and Ten of Cups contrast a bad family, marriage, or group of people with a good family, marriage or group of people … and that’s all. The other card, Eight of Swords, limits – so we have sentences like ‘We are really good people stuck in a bad marriage.’

In the social story, Knight of Cups is the buddy, the friend, who helps, who offers, who suggests, who is a friend in need, or a friend who helps someone in need.
