You just detoured your insight around that obstacle. One day, the programming on the detour expires and you up-periscope and say ‘What the hell? – Why didn’t I do THIS?’ – because your subconscious gave you a glimmer of enlightenment just the right size for that aggravatin’ situation. Hanged Man
Subconscious has a life and a world of its own, but it usually minds its own business in that world. But every once in a while, it serves notice on the lower mind. Some insight, some perception, bypasses all the channels and flashes a brief takeover of your mental machinery, and you ‘get it.’ The thinking has been pre-chewed for you: You get the conclusion directly, intravenously, without the supporting documents. Five of Pentacles
Five of Pentacles is another song of the Sixties that says ‘I’ve been down so long it looks like up to me.’ Anyway, you are a street person in thin rags on a frozen street late at night on foot and on crutches, passing by a church that would have represented … back then … a warm bed and meal. But none for you, either because you have leprosy or because you are too numb to recognize the rescue.
Five of Pentacles represents the spiritual stage of development called Dark Night of the Soul – because this illustration is what that phase feels like.
Five of Pentacles’ mundane applications are mostly about lack, hopeless circumstances, desperation, bad times, feeling or being inferior, being stuck in a situation because you are used to it and have quit looking. So Five of Pentacles represents bankruptcy, being short of anything, clinical depression, sickness, disability, and being left out in the cold.
Once in a while it is about a martyr complex, wallowing in self-pity, and such.
Eight of Cups
All bets are off and it’s closing time. Never mind, quit without notice. Escape, avoid, drop out. Eight of Cups has so very many phrases, and it covers a lot of stories and situations. Quite often it is simply ‘not anymore,’ and ‘outta here.’ Today, accompanied by inspiration and a desperate circumstance, Eight of Cups represents getting out of trouble, but it really is about an abrupt shift or change of any sort – good, bad, or neutral. Eight of Cups here is about detouring around some obstacle like those mountains that prevent the pilgrim from maintaining his course as the crow flies.

Tarot Verbatim™ says that when you see a down card like Five of Pentacles, you look for a ‘rescue card.’ A rescue card is any card that, in context, would reinterpret, damper, or negate the down card. Here, Five of Pentacles is a hitting-bottom card – is a drastic lack, is a numbed-out, drained, exhausted feeling.
But to the right is Eight of Cups which operates here as either a quick escape from the misery, or as a detour avoiding it. To the left, Hanged Man can apply Five of Pentacles’ desperation to just seeing it or feeling it, or to an insight about it.
Moral of the story is to always look for that rescue card, and don’t panic until you’re sure there isn’t one. Tarot is very capable of not supplying one. I once got a spread of 14 desperation cards with no relief … and the report was so right.

Knight of Cups
Knight of Cups today is about helping out, being a buddy, and, yes, we use its ‘boyfriend’ meaning too. He is the helper, assistant or aide in work related questions. He is our friend. He looks us up, invites us places, agrees with us and gets us to agree with him, offers suggestions and accepts them, makes us offers and accepts ours. He does favors too. This is the ‘warm puppy’ boyfriend most women would love to have. Knight of Cups offers the cup of friendship. Knight of Cups has Mercury’s wings – the messenger Roman god – on his helmet, so he communicates, he talks, he introduces himself. He is the mellow fellow of the Rider Waite deck. This card’s illustration is rendered in pastels, in curved lines, so it is about friendly relaxed situations.
Five of Pentacles
Five of Pentacles’ message is even worse than its illustration suggests. Homeless cripples pass by a church that has a bed and food for people who are in their circumstances … except, the bell on the boy says he is a leper … so no food and bed for them. It’s freezing; they are barefoot and wear rags as they trudge on. Five of Pentacles belongs to the ‘loss’ theme. Five of Pentacles is doing without, being without. This is a picture of desperation; of the worst situation, of down times. Dark Night of the Soul. When I am beaten, whipped, drained of my sparkle and my energy. This is the card for despair, suffering, homeless people, and for losing one’s house or home. For bankruptcy. For not having any fight left within you.
But occasionally Five of Pentacles reflects a martyr complex, or overblown self pity. And, yes, it can stand for justifiably feeling sorry for oneself or other person(s.) Just as it can stand for feeling inferior or actually being inferior. For being marginalized, left out, unwelcome.
In application, in your Tarot work, Five of Pentacles is about being used to circumstances that are a drain on you, being in a funk, being in a ghetto (longstanding financial, emotional, mental or spiritual exhaustion), being so tired, so drained, that you are numb to your surroundings. It represents brutalized people and animals. It also represents clinical depression. It can be being very sick too.
A point of Five of Pentacles is that when you believe in your adversity, you are stuck in it. I’ve been down so long it looks like up to me. Nothing good happens here. This is a self-fulfilling prophesy.
Eight of Cups
When you see Eight of Cups, there’s an abrupt change. Maybe a temporary one. Maybe something doesn’t last. Circumstances cause an immediate change of plan, direction or activity. The change in Eight of Cups is neutral: The change can be for the good or not. Eight of Cups is having to detour, and this situation applies across the board of all sorts of situations you wouldn’t think of right away. A derailment, plans are canceled, you detour because of something that presents itself unexpectedly, you have a flat tire or lose your glasses, you walk out in the middle, or something is over with before it begins. You switch brands. Someone misses out. Eight of Cups is AWOL or something is unfinished or abandoned. It is deflected off its course. Someone is suddenly gone (unexpected death, runaway – anything like that). Vanishing without a trace, dropping out, quitting without notice, switching, ‘abandoning the fort.’
Mountains are in the way of the pilgrim’s progress. Going around them is a detour. Presumption is, pilgrim resumes course when he gets around the mountain.

You get the story with barely a glance: Five of Pentacles is poverty; Eight of Cups is a shift or change. Knight of Cups is a helpful friend. So a friend in need is helped out of a bad time, or you help a friend in need out.
Knowing Knight of Cups is the loving (young or youngish) man, you can see being lonely and miserable when he leaves, or him missing someone who leaves him.
Five of Pentacles and Eight of Cups both are pedestrians, and both can mean not reaching the destination. Eight of Cups is deflected or is detoured from its path, and doesn’t get to the destination – runs off the road. Five of Pentacles passes right by a destination, not even knowing. But Eight of Cups will resume it course, and Five of Pentacles has no open doors.
Knight of Cups and Eight of Cups describe an offer or suggestion changing another person’s direction. The offer-and-acceptance theme can go all over the place here because, first, Eight of Cups is simply into one and out of the other. Second, Knight of Cups can be either offer or acceptance. Knight of Cups and Eight of Cups also describe avoiding being affectionate, since Eight of Cups is to veer away from and Knight of Cups is the affectionate person or boyfriend or buddy. They describe a guy avoiding a buddy. They also describe turning down (Eight of Cups heading in the other direction or walking away) an offer (Knight of Cups).
The third Tarot card to our story, Knight of Cups, is a warmhearted helpful friend. In the romance story, he is the loving fellow who misses her, or the loving fellow she misses, who is gone from their scene. He is lonely, or she is lonely for him – Five of Pentacles is missing someone and being lonely.
In the social story, Knight of Cups is the buddy, the friend, who helps, who offers, who suggests, who is a friend in need, or a friend who helps someone in need.

Five of Pentacles
Unshod cripples in rags on the street in freezing weather in the middle of the night: Five of Pentacles is about misery, suffering, despair, doing without, being friendless, losing it all (including losing a home), the ghetto, lowlifes and ignorant people. Being and feeling inferior.
Five of Pentacles’ meaning of being without and doing without expands to apply to lack, deficit, and deficiency of any sort, even bankruptcy. And this card’s meaning also expands to the downside (of anything). The story in the illustration is that the boy is a leper, so they have no refuge in their desperate circumstances at the church which back then would take them in and give them a bed and a meal.
Five of Pentacles is about missing a loved one, missing home or being homesick.
Five of Pentacles can represent lowlifes, bums, ignorant and inferior people … uh, scum. Which could simply indicate that is what the Querant feels. Naturally it is also about feeling that way about yourself, and is about self-pity (whether justified by facts or not).
So Five of Pentacles is hitting bottom. This is the card for Dark Night of the Soul, a title for a phase in the spiritual life of a mystic, or a devotee of divinity, of feeling abandoned by God. St. John of the Cross, a martyred Catholic saint, wrote a book by that title. (It contains a hilarious description of vainglorious religious people).
Incidentally, you find Five of Pentacles meaning night time, cold, ‘being out in the cold’ or left out, and even representing the church building or churches.
World
The key to World’s many and varied meanings and applications is that circle around the dancer. It can be about keeping the woman in her place (glass ceiling type thing). It can be about the woman not being interfered with – which can be her choice or ‘their’ choice, whoever ‘they’ are in the story. Putting up a wall, or being walled in. World is not being influenced or affected by outside factors, forces, entities, or whatever. This is the core meaning of World as it is applied in real-life Tarot.

World is the superior woman. This comes as a byproduct of World’s higher consciousness category of meanings. The highest level of magic is being Master of Both Worlds. This is why World has a wand in each hand: the left-hand path and the right-hand path. So World will appear for higher consciousness, for spiritual maturity. The illustration shows the spirits not seeing World because she can handle them, the way a mugger instinctively avoids someone who is willing or able to handle him or her. Confidence repels.
The illustration puts world in the beautiful woman/sexy lady category with the likes of Empress. But in real esoteric life (and World is arguably the most esoteric cards), World is both genders – a parallel to being both left- and right- pathed.
Eight of Wands
Eight of Wands is such a utilitarian card, especially today where the other two cards have so much to say all by themselves. Eight of Wands is a supporting actor here, as Judgment was yesterday. First, Eight of Wands is all about communication, but today uses only four of those meanings (in short: he said; they talk; chatter; stories to tell).

Five of Pentacles
Unshod cripples in rags on the street in freezing weather in the middle of the night: Five of Pentacles is about misery, suffering, despair, doing without, being friendless, losing it all (including losing a home), the ghetto, lowlifes and ignorant people. Being and feeling inferior.
Five of Pentacles’ meaning of being without and doing without expands to apply to lack, deficit, and deficiency of any sort, even bankruptcy. And this card’s meaning also expands to the downside (of anything). The story in the illustration is that the boy is a leper, so they have no refuge in their desperate circumstances at the church which back then would take them in and give them a bed and a meal.
Five of Pentacles is about missing a loved one, missing home or being homesick.
Five of Pentacles can represent lowlifes, bums, ignorant and inferior people … uh, scum. Which could simply indicate that is what the Querant feels. Naturally it is also about feeling that way about yourself, and is about self-pity (whether justified by facts or not).
So Five of Pentacles is hitting bottom. This is the card for Dark Night of the Soul, a title for a phase in the spiritual life of a mystic, or a devotee of divinity, of feeling abandoned by God. St. John of the Cross, a martyred Catholic saint, wrote a book by that title. (It contains a hilarious description of vainglorious religious people).
Incidentally, you find Five of Pentacles meaning night time, cold, ‘being out in the cold’ or left out, and even representing the church building or churches.
World
The key to World’s many and varied meanings and applications is that circle around the dancer. It can be about keeping the woman in her place (glass ceiling type thing). It can be about the woman not being interfered with – which can be her choice or ‘their’ choice, whoever ‘they’ are in the story. Putting up a wall, or being walled in. World is not being influenced or affected by outside factors, forces, entities, or whatever. This is the core meaning of World as it is applied in real-life Tarot.

World is a survivor. World is especially a survivor today accompanied by Five of Pentacles (and the other card being a pluralizer).
World is the superior woman. This comes as a byproduct of World’s higher consciousness category of meanings. The highest level of magic is being Master of Both Worlds. This is why World has a wand in each hand: the left-hand path and the right-hand path. So World will appear for higher consciousness, for spiritual maturity. The illustration shows the spirits not seeing World because she can handle them, the way a mugger instinctively avoids someone who is willing or able to handle him or her. Confidence repels.
The illustration puts world in the beautiful woman/sexy lady category with the likes of Empress. But in real esoteric life (and World is arguably the most esoteric cards), World is both genders – a parallel to being both left- and right- pathed.
Eight of Wands
Eight of Wands is such a utilitarian card, especially today where the other two cards have so much to say all by themselves. Eight of Wands is a supporting actor here, as Judgment was yesterday. First, Eight of Wands is all about communication, but today uses only four of those meanings (in short: he said; they talk; chatter; stories to tell).

Five of Pentacles – Think ‘bums on the street,’ and you have a feel for this Five of Pentacles card. There’s no hope here; it represents bad times so ingrained that you are used to them, live within their framework, and don’t look for better. Five of Pentacles is doing without in any way: being broke, being miserable, being sick, feeling spiritually dry, lacking anything or everything. Five of Pentacles is the strict budget (‘on a shoestring’), desperate times, the bad old days, the worst times, dire straits, and being in a miserable situation.

Five of Pentacles – Desperate times, losing home, hitting bottom, feeling sorry (or feeling sorry for yourself). Five of Pentacles is a mother and son, crippled, on the street, passing by a church that would have a meal and a place to sleep but the boy has leprosy (the bell he wears). So Five of Pentacles is about serious sickness too. And about being crippled, disabled. Five of Pentacles can represent Dark Night of the Soul, and similar feelings, or it can represent a desperate situation. This is one of those cards that impels you to look for a ‘rescue card’ – my word for it.

Five of Pentacles means loss, especially losing money, and being in need, being broke or bankrupt – ‘on the street.’ It is simply being poor too, and it also can represent the ghetto.
