Fool
Fool has many and miscellaneous meanings; it’s the most ambiguous of all cards. Today, in the company of one card about stress and one about relaxation, Fool is mostly using its ‘oh never mind’ category of meanings. Fool doesn’t know, doesn’t care, isn’t (whatever) … heck, fool isn’t even there!
Fool also means both ignore and be oblivious to. It means assume and it means guess.
Fool is also a young spirit, a free spirit. ‘Let up on it already,’ it says today.
The picture shows a young person skipping away on a journey with next to no provisions, with his fluffy white dog companion, who is about to skip off the cliff with him. Although this is ‘God protects fools and drunks’ sometimes, Fool is really about the idea that spiritual people live charmed lives. Don’t try this at home.

Nine of Wands
Nine of Wands guards a turf that is subject to invasion, and feels apprehensive, threatened or intimidated. He has already been wounded, and fears a return of the invaders. So Nine of Wands is about hanging in there in a bad situation. Key words are: nervous, uneasy, anxious, fears, dread, stress, challenge, pressure, have to live with it.
Nine of Wands is defense, and translates ‘defense’ even in legal contexts (like a defense attorney). Feeling defensive, feeling accused, and being accused – either by oneself or by others – belongs to Nine of Wands.
Empress
Really, all you need to know about Empress is that this card is the synthesis of all the fertility goddesses that ever were. So Empress is beautiful, sexy, pregnant, the ideal woman and the slut – and she has a life of ease and luxury. The story in the picture is: She is the beloved of a wealthy man who keeps her in utmost comfort while she is pregnant.
Empress is a resource. Empress is an easygoing personality, is relaxed. Mother Nature, in a way.

Fool is a free spirit, and Empress simply enjoys life. This makes stories that contrast with Nine of Wands’ intense uneasiness. ‘How great my life is; I don’t dread a thing,’ they say. Or ‘She is naturally comfortable; she doesn’t stress.’
Empress is pregnant (Fertility goddesses are always pregnant.) so these three cards could be about a problem pregnancy, with a fellow being accused and put on the spot, Nine of Wands, and denying all, Fool – even claiming ‘I wasn’t there,’ which is one of Fool’s meanings. That meaning grows out of Fool’s being the zero. Of course, these same three cards also say ‘She isn’t worried about getting (or being) pregnant.” They could also say – but it would not likely show up this way – ‘She is worried about not being pregnant.’
Empress can be the ideal woman and can be the slut. These three cards could tell the story of a man who sees no reason at all (Fool) to defend or stand up for (Nine of Wands) that trollop (Empress as slut). Nine of Wands defends, and being oblivious, Fool, is ‘seeing no reason.’
