The group leaves you cold when your real life is internal. One man can see how his marriage is draining him of life, and another misses being married and is out looking. But even if you are a hermit, your people comfort you when you are down.

A socially prominent respectable family – the foundation and leaders of the town – is hosting the public part of a wedding ceremony: That’s our picture. The ‘family’ theme extends to any group or organization or Company – any kind and any size of group of people, from neighborhood to national or international.
As a wedding, Four of Wands starts with the marriage and the couple, of course. Naturally, Four of Wands means the good sensible solid people of the society (any society, anywhere). But it also (as its twin ‘family’ card does) means ‘everybody.’ Today it is a crowd, and the people who are in good shape, who are doing well, who are ‘as good as anyone else.’ It also represents a good home life.
Four of Wands is a house or building, including a public building. Today, that makes it a treatment center or a religious organization, with Hermit as the religious part.
This (service order) monk goes out at night with a light as a beacon for travelers on the road, to help them or invite them in for dinner. So Hermit is coming to the aid of, helping out, looking or searching or seeking, a religious person, being decent and wise, and also being a doctor or healer. He is dressed as a doctor of the middle ages’ time. Hermit is a trip on the road, usually pedestrian. Hermit also can refer to winter, snow, cold, mountains, nighttime, and carrying a light (flashlight, headlight, etc.).
Hermit owns the virtues and attributes of a service monk: being devoted, being alone, being humble, being on the Path, being religious, kind, helpful, a friend, loyal.
This Hermit card also translates: understanding, knowing, truth, sincere, seeing or observing, or even witnessing.
Five of Pentacles is one of the dismal cards. It can be about hitting bottom and being so numb you don’t see the way out. It can be desperation. Being desperate financially, having a hopeless health problem – all of that. The picture shows homeless son and mother, crippled and shoe-less trudging through the snow past a church that, back then offered food and shelter … unless you were a leper, and that is what the bell around the boy’s neck represents. So today Five of Pentacles says these things in our story: disabled, miserable, draining him of life, people who are in need, feeling inferior, sick and crippled people, the ghetto, and desperate people in bad shape.
But that is just where we start … with the illustration. Here are the more common meanings of Five of Pentacles from today’s work: A rundown neighborhood, I’m lonely, a fixer-upper house, leaves you cold, feeling left out, broke, on a shoestring, sacrifices and does without, misses, in the dead of winter, when you are down, my shortcomings, and when you need it.
Five of Pentacles can, and often is, making do with what you have; doing without as a sacrifice. Even a down mood or a ‘day from hell.’
But Five of Pentacles has a very special meaning for your spiritual life: Dark Night of the Soul. That’s when you have had an enlightenment, an epiphany, a peak experience, a eureka revelation or awakening, which is followed by a sort of buyer’s-remorse despair at … now that you see … how benighted, how ignorant, you were. Dark Night of the Soul is a miserable, but normal and natural, experience.

These three cards have some powerful and curious interplays in common. Hermit is a monk, a service monk, out looking for people in need outdoors on a mountain path, to bring them in for dinner and wise chat. The mother and son in Five of Pentacles are outdoors on the street, in need, passing by a church and not asking help from it. So we have someone bringing help to people who need it but are not seeking it. We have two stories that take place outdoors on the street or trail, and we have two cards that are stories about church.
Four of Wands is home, and is people who have the comforts of a good home. Five of Pentacles is people who have no home and no comfort. Hermit – the helper and the help – is stationed between them. Four of Wands and Five of Pentacles contrasts people who are in good shape with people who are in bad shape, and contrasts the superior ‘leaders of the town’ with the inferior ‘bums on the street.’
Hermit is a solitary individual who is alone, and Five of Pentacles is people who are ‘alone in the world,’ who are lonely outcasts.
Four of Wands is an organization and Hermit can translate ‘religious,’ so: a religious organization – or its building or headquarters, which Four of Wands also means. Hermit is devoted, and Four of Wands is family, so: He is devoted to his family, or devotion to the family. Hermit is coming, and Four of Wands is home, so: coming home.
The theme for the preponderance of the stories these spreads make is: belonging and not belonging – being a member of the group, or being outside membership – whether by choice as Hermit is, or by being shunned and shut out or excluded as Five of Pentacles is.

Not letting myself loose to have a fit feels just like not letting myself think step by step all the way to a breakthrough. So the enlightenment can come just like a tantrum. Provoking a confrontation to validate a belief you’re about to change is a similar process to annoying your marital partner into a divorce. Sometimes clinging to something right up to the very last instant you give it up … is the way you give it up.

Hermit’s story and this picture make more meanings than you would expect. The old man, who is a doctor, is a monk whose job it is to calmly go out on the cold mountain road as a pedestrian with a light, find, and help travelers. Here is your ‘wise old man’ card: Hermit knows, understands, is sober and sensible as well as being an adviser or counselor.
Here also is your card for any kind of look-see, search, investigation, inquiry, observation, surveillance, or inquest. Watch for Hermit to mean ‘the fact’ or factual. (‘Just the facts, ma’am.)
As a monk, he is celibate (read monogamous these days) and virtuous. So Hermit is sincere, helpful, is a friend, is spiritual – ‘on the Path.’
Most Tarot systems title Four of Pentacles ‘The Miser.’ He can be broke or short of money, or he can be a cheapskate, or he can simply be thrifty, or saving money, or hiding money, or having a stash or rainy day fund. He is pictured holding onto his cash for dear life, hugging it to himself. But this shortage can be a shortage of anything, or a low level of anything, or ‘not enough’ as in ‘not enough gas to get there.’ Four of Pentacles translates phrases like ‘not much’ or ‘not very’ or even ‘less than.’
He sits outside of the town with his back to it, and is associated with secrets and with being excluded, isolated (or even blackballed). He has something to hide. This extends to being inferior, being an outsider – or of course feeling inferior. He is self-contained, and Four of Pentacles sometimes with translate ‘container,’ especially if what is hidden is in a container. (Lost object questions.) A container can be a drawer, a safe, etc.
Secrets. He has a secret. He isn’t in on a secret. He is keeping something from, or something is being kept from him. He isn’t letting himself. He isn’t admitting. He is not about to, or he is repressed. Four of Pentacles is even ‘shut down,’ numb, shut out. This ‘shut’ can apply to objects as well as persons, of course.
Secrets. He has a secret. He isn’t in on a secret. He is keeping something from, or something is being kept from him. He isn’t letting himself. He isn’t admitting. He is not about to, or he is repressed. Four of Pentacles is even ‘shut down,’ numb, shut out. This ‘shut’ can apply to objects as well as persons, of course.
Deeply held beliefs are the province of Four of Pentacles too. Four of Pentacles repression, and the fact he is hugging himself, extends to ‘deep down inside’ feelings, and deepest beliefs: privacy too. It can even translate ‘deep.’ This ‘deep down inside’ category extends to ‘internal.’ Internal organs. Internal affairs. Internal life.
This is the Tower of Babel. A building is struck suddenly and destroyed – a disaster that all the cultures of that time duly reported. Tower is associated with the word ‘break’ in its various phrases and forms: breakthrough, breakup, break open, broke (including financially) and more. It’s also associated with the verb ‘fall’ in its various forms – even ‘fall off the wagon’ today with Hermit as sobriety.
Naturally, Tower is your card for wrecks, damage, destruction, disasters, emergencies, anything drastic or shocking, explosions, and hitting or striking. It also appears for ranting, having a fit, confrontation, rejecting, conflict and conflicted, drama. It is about getting arrested or getting shot, or shooting a weapon of any kind.
And aren’t I glad that this drastic card can simply translate – and very often does translate – ‘suddenly’ or ‘sudden.’

How I cut the number of Tarot Readings sentences to the bone, here! We are a study in contrasts, and we make many, many phrases.
The first focal point is Hermit and Seven of Swords. Hermit is honest, calm, rational (just the facts) and truthful, careful, monogamous or celibate, is seeking or observing something (he) is interested in, is religious, a devoted and helpful friend. Seven of Swords is a sneak, is abandoning the scene (getaway), is a thief, a double-crosser or traitor, an adventurer or daring, a cheat, even an assassin or spy. (I left out the black ops theme for Seven of Swords.) So Hermit is a man of peace and Seven of Swords may be military. Together, these two Rider Waite Tarot cards say ‘witness a crime,’ ‘assess risks,’ ‘It’s true about the double-cross,’ ‘You know how risky that is.’ They even say ‘an honest crook.’
There’s a contrast in the remaining pair of Rider Waite Tarot cards too, Eight of Wands and Four of Cups. Eight of Wands is more and more (increasingly) or many or a lot of, is talking or telling, is a list of things and means ‘fast’ too; Four of Cups is denying, is ‘none of that,’ not talking, no way, it stops here. Together they are ‘none of the above’; they are taking the Fifth. Some excerpt phrases are: “More and more, he does not.” “A number of them are not.” “I am not having anything to do with any of them.” Do you see how these two could also say ‘Cross it off the list’?
Eight of Wands and Hermit is telling the truth, having all the facts, is a lot of friends, helpers, sensible people or observers. Eight of Wands and Hermit also say ‘more and more devoted.’ These two Rider Waite Tarot cards describe reading a document, the facts in writing or in a document, a sincere letter to a friend – even ‘religious writing,’ which might be scriptures. Eight of Wands and Hermit are about examining or investigating one after another, a lot of witnesses, or a lot of help or helpers – or ‘help is on the way.’ Together, they can simply say ‘facts’ too, because Eight of Wands makes things plural, remember?
Eight of Wands is a pluralizer (makes other Tarot cards’ meanings plural), as well as being a list, talking, documents and indicating ‘quickly’ or ‘fast.’ Here are Seven of Swords’ words for today: get away with it, fools around, sabotage and self-sabotage, bad boys, risks and risky, double-cross, danger and dangerous, hazardous, takes chances, harm and self-harm, ‘making off with,’ meaning stealing, theft, criminal and lowlife, daring, spies and snoops. Together, Eight of Wands and Seven of Swords say ‘says he fools around’ and ‘is a danger to others,’ and ‘takes a lot of chances,’ and ‘putting it is writing is too risky.’ ‘Tell him it’s too risky,’ ‘tell him he is harming himself,’ ‘one of the people making off with,’ ‘all the lowlifes,’ ‘these things are too dangerous,’ ‘a number of them are snoops,’ ‘a list of hazardous materials’ are some of the things these two Tarot cards have said today. Can you see how the two could just say ‘thefts’?
Four of Cups and Hermit is generally about not being honest or not believing the facts or the truth, not looking, refusing to see things as they are, denying the truth – won’t be sensible or sober or monogamous. Refusing to play it safe. These two can also say “That is not the truth, or not true.” Hermit means to look, search, observe, believe and understand, so Four of Cups and Hermit also say ‘know (he) won’t,’ and ‘aware (he) denies.’ Hermit investigates, so Hermit and Four of Cups could also say ‘The investigation finds no’ (whatever). And of course, ‘refuse to look, refuse to investigate’ is also on the table, with Four of Cups meaning ‘refuse.’ Hermit is realistic, so you get ‘not being realistic’ when you put Four of Cups next to it.
Four of Cups often serves as a negative modifier of its associate Tarot cards. One of its meanings is not letting something through, not letting something happen. Seven of Swords is the daring risk-taker, is dangerous, is getting away with some shenanigan or crime. He is a double-crossing lowlife. He is a thief, an assassin. He robs you, his buddy. This card stands for hazards and means ‘hazardous.’ But watch for Seven of Swords to mean ‘have the guts to’ as well, to indicate revenge, or to mean ‘you pull it off.’ Here are some of the things these two cards have said in our Tarot Readings: You can’t get away with it. Nothing to do with the bad boys. Does not take risks, or Don’t take chances. Not a daring person. No more criminal activity. Isn’t cheating. But not if it is dangerous. Isn’t a crook. Isn’t breaking the law. Denies he did the trespassing. Not let hazardous material through. Won’t let them take risks.

Eight of Wands Mainly is adjectives that mean ‘many’ or ‘a lot of.’ Eight of Wands is about messages, talk, a list, one after another, increasingly. It also means ‘fast’ or ‘quickly’ and its synonyms. It serves to make nearby cards plural. For example, if Hermit is meaning ‘friend,’ Eight of Wands makes that: friends, all the friends, many friends, more and more friends, or more and more friendly. The illustration could be better: boards one on top of the other fly through the air.
Four of Cups isn’t accepting, isn’t listening, isn’t about to, won’t have anything to do with, refuses to, is not reachable. Nothing goes through here. “No.” Illustration aptly depicts that: A disembodied hand holds out yet another cup to a person whose arms and legs are crossed, whose head is averted.
Hermit Shows a monk out looking for travelers who need help at night in the cold. Its disparate meanings arise from that illustration: Comes to help, comes to the other person, sincerely devoted, honest person, monogamous or celibate, truth and true, a night trip or trip or being on the road, look for or investigate, an old or older man, a healer or counselor.

That’s you getting away with it, or getting even … a little ‘street justice.’ Seven of Swords is a hazard or hazardous material as well. It is a hazardous mission, a reconnaissance or black ops or illegal mission … which does not have to be an official one; it can be a person on that kind of adventure privately. It stands for daring, derring-do, and self-destructive acts and persons. So there’s the ‘star card’ of our spread. The other cards will frame what part of Seven of Swords is being brought out. The other cards are benign, so we are not into horrors or disasters here.
The next Rider Waite Tarot Citizen to shape our stories is Hermit. Hermit has several applications: Investigation, truth or fact, observation or demonstration, sincerity, coming to help, coming, help, counseling or wising up or straightening up, a friend or a friend who helps, sane and sober. Now you should begin to see why we have so many sentences up there!
Remaining citizens are the constants. Constants as Tarot reading goes. Eight of Wands is messages, talk, a list, increasing (as in ‘more and more’ or ‘-er’). Four of Cups is refusing, not listening or not engaging, kind of ‘not doing’ and ignoring. It means ‘no way!’ sometimes.
As many sentences as we have, many more variations are out there. I quit because these are ‘too many’ for a lot of our visitors and readers.

Six of Swords is leaving that behind and going off somewhere else. The two together mean things like ‘isn’t going to leave.’ (Hermit and Six of Swords both have the idea of a helper and travel in them, but that does not apply that much in today’s spread.) Then things get interesting. What the other two cards have in common is a contrast: Hermit is a patient, helpful man who comes to another; King of Wands is the angry, irritated, hot-tempered guy. Hermit is celibate; King of Wands is hot-blooded. MEANINGS AND ILLUSTRATIONS: INDIVIDUAL RIDER WAITE TAROT CARDS Four of Cups is not accepting, refusing, not having any of that, not being that way anymore. In Rider Waite, a person is seated with arms and legs crossed and head averted as if to say “No! No more of that.” Hermit is the monk who goes out of his way to help travelers on the road at night. He is kind, he is ‘on the path’ and he is celibate. He is also searching or looking. These are his main meanings. Six of Swords doesn’t live there anymore, has left the bad scene for a better life, has put something behind. Putting distance between. A woman and child are being helped to leave like refugees. King of Wands is a married man, a husband, an impulsive, hot-blooded, hot-headed, hot-tempered fellow, sometimes a redneck type. He is pictured red-headed, looking irritated on his throne. Hermit, King of Cups, Four of Cups
The Hermit and the King of Cups walk on the stage first, two of the ‘good guy’ Rider Waite Tarot cards. Both are often older men, especially the elderly depiction on the Hermit. The King of Cups is an emotional man who is polite, a bureaucratic personality, may be weak, may be a drinking man. The Hermit also stands for sincerity and truth, seeking for or looking, as well as for the facts themselves – even an investigation. You can see how these two would be friends.
Next are two Rider Waite Tarot cards that taken together commonly mean to resist evil. The Four of Cups means to refuse every time it is offered; won’t hear of it, refuses to believe it; to resist, to resist temptation; and sometimes negating words such as ‘not’ and ‘no way.’ The Moon is referred to as ‘the worst card in the deck.’ It means a plethora of bugaboos and nasty things. Here in this four-Tarot-card layout we have an emphasis on being good, and then ‘refusing,’ so the Moon is meaning such things as: wrong, mistaken, lies, evil.
As one of the negating cards, The Four of Cups produces ‘not’ sometimes. (When that happens, you get contradictory sentences as the ‘not’ attaches itself to one or the other cards. For example ‘not believe the truth’ comes from Four of Cups with Hermit; and then ‘not believe a lie’ is Four of Cups and Moon. If we had a specific question, the contradictory clash probably would not occur.)
Advice is to know your own emotional makeup so it does not distort your perception as you search for your own path. Tacking against your own known deviation, taking your inclinations into account, puts you on a straighter course.
Let’s say I know I tend to be judgmental, opinionated and of no mind to suffer fools. Therefore, I should check out what kindness would have to say, since I know I tend to turn a deaf ear to the plight of weaklings. Or the opposite: Say I know I am a bleeding heart, so I had better bend an ear to strictly factual input – never mind the kindness stuff, the warm fuzzy stuff – to get my accurate view.
A good heart will not get you there. That’s a deviation. A good analysis of fact will not get you there. That’s a deviation. Either one – the good heart or the good head – means you are not lost as long as you are still searching. To truly ‘get there,’ you need to put both the heart and the head together, both severity and mildness together in sync. But you don’t have to find some perfect plumb line common to all: The place that is your goal is the place that is true for your type; it is not one-size-fits-all. (Many mansions.)
Romantic Perspective:
It’s his mistake to be sincere about not feeling affection.
He isn’t looking to be anybody’s sweetheart, that is too scary.
He is no gentleman: Being a good guy is a bad thing.
Nice guys finish last, he isn’t looking for that.
He is afraid to be sincere; he doesn’t want to be weak.
Two gentlemen are not going to fail.
Health/Alcohol Perspective:
The drinking man is sober because he doesn’t want to be sick.
His drinking is a disease and he refuses help.
He doesn’t want to be sober, drinking is his vice.
He is a sick man, and doctors can’t help him.
He doesn’t go to doctors when he is sick.
Social Perspective:
He hates being the weaker man, he will not go to him.
A good man doesn’t go looking for trouble.
He won’t help the nice guy who is in trouble.
He is really sick at heart, he can’t accept this as true.
He feels weak and hateful about this; he doesn’t want to be honest.
You can’t be emotional when you are investigating a crime.
The truth is: He is a good man and isn’t evil.
He can be so nasty when he isn’t being so kind.
He is emotional but not afraid of the truth.
He cannot accept the horrible facts.
Don’t let your emotions sabotage your search for truth.
Do not let your emotions distort the facts.
He seeks to be a good man and to resist evil.
A seeker whose heart is in the right place is not lost.
He will not accept these lies as the truth.
He is so mistaken he will not listen to the truth.
He is an honest good man who does no wrong.
He is a moral kind man, he refuses to believe that this is crime, or is evil or wrong.
Hermit: The Hermit stands for sincerity and truth, seeking for or looking, as well as for the facts themselves – even an investigation. He is a monk searching for travelers who need help.
King of Cups: The King of Cups is an emotional man who is polite, a bureaucratic personality, may be weak, may be a drinking man. His throne is surrounded by splashing water, and ships are tossed in that water. Water symbolizes emotions. An emotional man can be a weak man. He is a bureaucrat, he probably drinks.
Four of Cups: The Four of Cups means to refuse every time it is offered; won’t hear of it, refuses to believe it; to resist, to resist temptation; and sometimes negating words such as ‘not’ and ‘no way.’ You can see him with his arms crossed and looking down as yet another cup is proffered by the disembodied hand.
