Hermit – A kind friend who knows comes to help you: That sentences uses five of Hermit’s meanings, and Hermit tends to double up on its meanings this way, partly because Hermit means so many common things. Hermit also tends to pair up with other cards to make common phrases. Using Magician’s wide ‘do’ category, Hermit knows how to do, helps get it done, comes to do, shows how to do, is a friend who does, things an old person does, watch what you are doing, and knows what he is doing – and that’s just a few examples.

Pair Hermit with Eight of Wands in its various meanings, and you find: knows everything; tells or teaches what he knows; an honest talk; always watching, or always the observer; examines documents; sobers up quickly; is always the one to come to (you); tells (you) he is coming to see (you). And that’s not all, of course. Just enough to give you the idea to scope out when you see Hermit in your spread. Today we use ten of his categories of meanings.

Tarot Verbatim™ as you know uses details of the Rider Waite illustrations, and makes sentences from what the illustrations have in common. Hermit has a lot of elements in its illustration. You see a kind old virtuous man, a monk, out at night with a light in the snow in the mountains, searching for people who could use a meal, some wise conversation, and a warm bed in the hermitage. He comes to them to help as a friend. So all these words are key ones for Hermit.

His searching expands to all sorts of things, including: looking at, examining, observing, seeing things as they are, inspection, watching, surveillance, investigating. It also refers to ‘seeking’ or being a seeker, and to being on the Path (or out on a road, too).

.

His being the monk, and therefore virtuous, expands to: honest, sincere, celibate or monogamous or ‘true,’ sober, devoted, kind – and even truth. Naturally this is a card for a religious, or a religious person.

.

Hermit helps. This card is about helping a friend, or being helped by one, or being a friend – often a kind friend. Hermit is out searching for people to help so ‘he comes to help’ is one of his themes. He comes to you – indicating, yes, you are, or will be, contacted by the other person.

.

Hermit is a wise old man. So ‘wise’ and ‘old’ belong to this Tarot card. Watch for phrases like these: now that I am older; this old man; when you’re old, or older; when I’m old. ‘Wise’ includes ‘know’ of course, and that is a more common word, so you see Hermit translating: knows all about, you know, with the help of someone who knows, etc.

Magician – The focus in Magician is very simple, and it derives from the number 1 being ‘the male principle,’ an occult concept. So as number one, Magician is male, is active on the physical plane, and creates or initiates. The bulk of his translates are forms of the verbs ‘do’ and ‘make.’ Especially ‘do.’ Magician performs action, so he comes up as: initiate, initiative, start, create, volunteer.

The other category (besides ‘do’ and ‘make’) that Magician normally translates as is ‘male,’ which includes ‘man’ of course, and also male pronouns.

.

Because Magician means action generally, this card can get absorbed into the action of another card’s verb, and end up just owning the pronoun. Another thing to watch for with Magician is its representing a noun clause about something having been done. Examples would be ‘what was done’ or ‘what he did’ (or any other pronoun there).

.

Look for phrases about being the one who did, or does too. Today, we have ‘a man who’ for Magician.

Eight of Wands – Think communication, speed, and plurals, and you pretty much cover Eight of Wands. Communication can be written or verbal (or any other form, really). Eight of Wands belongs to what I call the speak/tell/say Tarot tribe: Today it translates: talk with; what I said; tell them; he tells you; what he says, and some more ‘tell’ words. And today, for the written for of communication, Eight of Wands translates: that list; the documents; you write about.

Eight of Wands also represents a plurality – numbers of things, or increasing numbers. Phrases like: a lot more, some things, all sorts of things, a lot, more, and ‘all.’ Eight of Wands also translates ‘everybody.’

.

Eight of Wands, like Eight of Pentacles, is also about repeated action, with phrases like: over and over, every time, and always. (‘Always,’ in Tarot Verbatim™ is a word quite a few cards can appear for.)

The other major category of Eight of Wands’ meanings is about speed: in a hurry, quickly, fast and faster.
