Hermit – Here’s a sober and saintly old guy who’s out to help us right where we are: He’s looking for us to provide a meal and a place to spend the night where he lives. He is wise and willing to advise. Hermit is our friend. He shines a light on our path, enlightens or wises us up – it’s a perilous road out there that he’s the guide to. Think of Hermit as the realist, the practical and pragmatic approach or person. This card very often translates ‘know.’

Hermit appears for virtues that fit his story: honesty, helping, sincerity, kindness, coming the other person. He especially stands for sobriety.

Seven of Pentacles – What you see is what you get with Seven of Pentacles. You can see him leaning on his spade or shovel wondering about the plant. He has done everything he can do for the plant to be successful in bearing cucumbers, but its future is uncertain. That uncertain future is a big part of Seven of Pentacles’ message.

Think brain fog, imagining things, crazy person, b.s., shock, ‘hits me in the face,’ and ‘what the heck.’ Think lost – things or people, including yourself. Think confused or drunk.

Think pieces of things, which includes your world or a dish being shattered, and which includes a jumble of unrelated items, like a purse being dumped out or a file cabinet in disarray. Seven of Cups also means phrases like ‘all kinds of things.’

This is the card for data in a mess or a house in a mess … or any mess. Your life in a mess, even. Chaos is the word with Seven of Cups.

Seven of Cups also describes being high, hallucinating, delirium tremens, having a vision.

The picture shows the magician’s apprentice story (or Pandora’s Box). In this story, a boo-boo has drastic consequences: the release of evil spirits. The good spirit is released after the fact. Think SHTF. The apprentice ‘bit off more than he can chew,’ and is confronted with a situation he cannot deal with that is widespread or ‘all over the place.’ Losing control, and things being out of control, are what Seven of Cups is all about. This card can appear as a warning that you are about to make a mess of things.

Among the ‘lesser includeds’ for Seven of Cups are all sorts of surprises and amazement, being caught unprepared, being shocked, and even The Muse experience – the trance we get into when we are creating, that seems to come in whole cloth from ‘out there.’

Once again we have two similar cards and an outlier, an unrelated one. Seven of Pentacles wonders and doesn’t know about the situation he is in (the plant is mature but has not yet blossomed) and Seven of Cups is presented with an out-of-control all-over-the-place scene around him.

Hermit, on the other hand, has been there and done that, and is a solution in search of a problem out on the road traveled by strangers – Everyman’s helpful friend. Hermit is wise, and Seven of Pentacles doesn’t know, wonders and questions. Hermit is an old monk with an ironclad routine in a serene life, and Seven of Cups is overwhelmed by everything at once going out of control in a nasty way. It’s suitable here that Hermit is the medic arriving on the scene of chaos with his wisdom intact.

Hermit is searching, and Seven of Pentacles is wondering. Hermit represents the facts and/or the truth that Seven of Pentacles wants to know. Hermit is sane and Seven of Cups can be a crazy person (or dealing with one). We also have a picture of being the wise one, the one who knows, when others are speculating, wondering, doubting. Six of Wands – Hermit – Seven of Pentacles

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

……..……...……... …. Hermit and Seven of Pentacles – in very different ways – want to know what’s real. Hermit is on either a fact-finding mission or a spiritual quest. (Today he isn’t physically searching for the lost item or folks.) Seven of Pentacles wants to know whether his plants will pay off, and only time will tell. Both Seven of Pentacles and Six of Wands can say ‘seem to be.’Six of Wands is why they are searching: Appearances are deceiving. We look into the various ways appearances are deceiving today, including self-deception, the profit motive, spiritual and religious angles, and the facts as agents of confusion.

These three cards in Tarot Verbatim™ are a prolific combination: They have a lot to say, and much of it is similar (as you can see from the sentences that did get in the door. I could do scores of other ones, and so can you if you have been visiting here for a while.

……………………….. Six of Wands says appearances are deceiving today, as part of advice to wonder and hunt. When you can’t trust the environment (Six of Wands), you wonder (Seven of Pentacles) and hunt (Hermit), because what you need to know to make sense of things is underwater, and you could get cut on some sharp rocks that are in your way. Deliberate deception is the tip of that rocky iceberg we are talking about: You can’t trust yourself, even, to gauge what’s real, because of your own self-interest. Competing interests are what human history is about, are the snakes in the woodpile of human experience.

…………………….… Hermit is looking for, searching; is on the path; is about the truth, facts, and what’s real. He is the friend as Six of Wands is the false friend; he is helping as Six of Wands is sabotaging. We aren’t going into his meanings about physical searches, because that isn’t our today topic. Today Hermit stands between deceptive environment and puzzling or figuring it out. Today Hermit is investigating what’s going on, and is on a quest for spiritual and religious truth especially in regard – due to the influence of Six of Wands – to being misled and not trusting his own powers of observation.

This layout is a great example of how one card’s meanings are narrowed and herded into the part that applies to that particular inquiry.

………………………. Seven of Pentacles is also about the search and the quest. It is magnifying Hermit’s search-for-truth meanings by echoing them in our spread. Seven of Pentacles’ main meanings are wondering, pondering, figuring out, and not knowing. He is one of the ‘Duh’ cards that puts a question mark at the end of your sentence. He often translates ‘doubt’ and his formal title in most Rider Waite Tarot books is ‘doubt about the outcome,’ which is what the illustration depicts. Seven of Pentacles leans on his shovel in his garden, wondering whether his plant will bear.

People who know it all know nothing, and people who are sure they are right are disproportionately wrong. So when I think I’ve got the conceptual world by the tail, I feel a red light in the back of my mind. Doubt your doubts too, though. The more willing you are to be a fool, the more on-track you will end up being.

The story of my life is, I am always hunting, looking (Hermit), wondering (Seven of Pentacles), and then I find a new perspective, a new phase (Judgment). The point is, yes, that’s the way it goes. Hermit is our star card, the one that most aspects the others. It means to search, to be on the path, to be monogamous as well as to be virtuous (sincere, helpful, devoted, a friend, understanding). Hermit is a male card, and can be a healer. He also travels, goes outdoors searching for people. He is the truth. He is a doctor or even medical science: knowledge, data.

To the left of Hermit is Eight of Cups which means to avoid, abandon, end prematurely, evade, disappear, drop out or leave unexpectedly. Eight of Cups is about timing: a shortcut, or something is over before it begins. ‘Now that’ and ‘ever was’ are some of its more subtle phrases.

Hermit and Seven of Pentacles To the right of Hermit is Seven of Pentacles: to wonder and ponder about some unknown, to question, to be uncertain. It picks up the ‘look into’ or ‘investigate’ of Hermit.

Eight of Cups and Death Above Hermit is Death, the great negator. It picks up ‘departure’ of Eight of Cups. Both mean an end. With Hermit being the physician, Death can now be literally interpreted, which it seldom is. Now you have a near-death experience, and unexpected death or sudden death.

Eight of Cups The Unfinished Symphony is Eight of Cups’ song. Incomplete action every kind of way. A person afoot on a long journey (pilgrimage) is forced by terrain to change direction, change course, make a detour. The sliver and full moon together suggested end/beginning – something over before it begins, aborted, abandoned, dismissed, changed unexpectedly or abruptly. Hasn’t even yet, near-(death), any more, ever was, before it’s over… these are some of its expressions.

Hermit The friend who helps, the good man who teaches, goes out of his way. He searches for travelers in distress (search party) and is a physician. Hermit is watching, looking out for, being patient, coming to, traveling, inquiry, investigations. He is truthful and even stands for the facts. He understands/understanding. He is honest/honesty. He also shows and demonstrates as part of his ‘guide’ meanings. Humility. Being straight. Being celibate, which these days is ‘monogamous.’ He is also elderly.

Seven of Pentacles Think of this fellow as one of the ‘Duh’ cards. It calls forth a question; it catapults the sentence into question form often. Illustration shows a fellow wondering whether he (or his neighbors) planted enough cucumbers (since it is a gendered crop) to produce a crop. Some of its quizzical phrases today are: I guess, suspicions, ask questions, you wonder, even consider, I doubt, does not seem to, you figure, wonder whether, don’t quite know, curious, ….

Death In Tarot Verbatim ™, Death is a negative modifier that sometimes literally means death if other cards set that theme. In just about any other system, Death is not so limited. (Go figure.) Anyway, this is one of the easiest to spot a meaning for. Here are just a few because they are so repetitious: isn’t, not to, no, ain’t going to, not, does not, not being, isn’t, quit, over, never would have, ended, end of it, die.

This Weekend’s Question is: A Satisfactory Love Life. Advice about a satisfactory love life brings up three cards out of four that each mean ‘thinking and feeling’ and in their midst is ‘sharing.’ Sharing thoughts and feelings means a satisfactory love life, we say here. The implication of the messages is: “This describes the real thing: Is this what you have?” Have you found the Holy Grail of Satisfying Love? Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things especially when the Spread has a card that negates other cards. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. Hermit and Seven of Cups are the search, the figuring it out. Hermit is following the trail of the facts toward an understanding of the truth. (That is why he also stands for an investigation.) Seven of Cups is the ‘Do you suppose?’ theory stage of the search-and-realization process. Three of Cups and Seven of Cups both involve harvest, but we aren’t using those meanings today. The Rider Waite Tarot card this is all about is being at one, sharing experience, joy and material goods. And that is a pretty good definition of a satisfactory love life, isn’t it? Meanings and Illustrations: Individual Rider Waite Tarot Cards Hermit is searching, is on the path (of service) and also means factual truth. He stands for sincerity and honesty and being a friend, helping out. His illustration is the monk out looking for people on the road to help who might be stranded or lost. Three of Cups’ key word is sharing. All for one and one for all, the Three Musketeers, pooling resources and sharing the profits of the shared work. Dating and girlfriends too. The illustration shows three girls who are rejoicing about their harvest on their farm. Seven of Pentacles wonders and figures and is all about theory and whether … ‘What are the chances?’ It seems, doesn’t it? Maybe. Hmmm. His illustration is the fella who planted cucumbers, which require a male and female plant in order to bear fruit. He wonders whether he will have his harvest. Hierophant is the eureka realization that disorients us from our standard consciousness.
