Hermit

Hermit is an old man, a monk who is out at night looking for people he can help. He carries a light. He is walking in the snow. Hermit is one of the cards that makes the point of one person taking the initiative – making the first move – going to another person. High Priestess and Hermit are both knowing and wise, are both spiritual, are both quiet, are both not engaged in action (other than Hermit’s looking and being a pedestrian). So they both represent people who are smart enough not to say anything.

So … the other Tarot card. Strength applies that spiritual knowhow: Strength is hands-on; Strength exerts influence. Strength is you using spiritual force or power to make things not happen or happen, as the case may be. Strength applies solution; strength fixes situations. Strength can be a controlling proactive person, whereas Hermit and High Priestess are background. And all of these, obviously, can be the parts of yourself.

Strength and High Priestess are both spiritual. High Priestess accentuates knowing spiritually and Strength emphasizes doing spiritually. Monks’ and nuns’ orders are divided between ‘contemplative’ and ‘service,’ and you can see Hermit as ‘service’ because he is out on the cold dark road looking for people to help. And you can see High Priestess as ‘contemplative,’ because she is associated not only with being deeply spiritual (the spiritual plane, even) but is associated also with being sedentary (cloistered) and quiet (the vow of silence).

Hermit and Strength are both helping and addressing trouble. Strength emphasizes hands-on ahead-of-time prevention of the trouble; Hermit is out looking for victims of it, to heal and to alleviate their suffering.

The only spiritual realities you can make hands-on practical use of in your daily life are the ones that are within your perspective. Whatever culture and religion you are born to is a beginning. Religions are all kindergarten. But education, like all things, has to begin somewhere. So get to know the God in your neighborhood.

Strength prevents and influences. The monster purrs against his will because the pretty lady overcame his beastly nature. Strength fixes a situation, hands-on. She nips opposition in the bud by being who she is: a person capable of handling this. She makes people or entities harmless if they are a threat, and she does it without a fuss, because she has foresight plus insight, combined – a spiritual tool that can operate as a weapon. Strength influences people to behave, to be harmless. She is take-charge and strongly associated with the spiritual plane. The lion came at her to roar and stayed to purr because of her Strength.

High Priestess Illustrated as a seated woman with a spiritual book and all sorts of occult symbols around her, High Priestess is the knower, the expert, the guru about anything. So much so that this High Priestess card can represent a data bank. High Priestess is, and has, insight. She is quiet, she stays, does not take initiative, and is sedentary. She waits. That last meaning somehow translates ‘the other woman’ in love spreads.

High Priestess as the female principle is receptive (passive) on the physical plane, and means knowing or expertise. She is active on the spiritual (and mental) plane, and therefore often means ‘spiritual.’ High Priestess is ‘behind the scenes,’ and sometimes ‘the back-seat driver. High Priestess can simply translate ‘she,’ often. This is the quiet woman, a backer or unseen influence. Emphasis is on knowing and knowing secrets.

Hermit’s traveling on foot at night in the cold mountains; Knight of Wands is moving fast in the daylight desert heat. Hermit is definitely coming to but Knight of Wands is more likely to be fleeing from. They both mean other things as well, of course.

Hermit is looking for people who have problems to help them, and is wise; Strength is applying a solution to a pr oblem. They both know how to fix the problem. They both are morally and spiritually superior beings.

Three of Cups is what happens when you have handled all those issues: sharing the good life, content and happy, with like-minded friends.

Hermit He is on the road, moving, carrying his light, traveling at night in the cold mountains, and is in no rush. Hermit is looking for, and coming to, people who have problems to help them, and is wise as well as morally and spiritually superior; he knows how to fix the problem.

Knight of Wands is in a hurry, rushing, running, speeding to or from. He is on the road (overland transport, by vehicle). He is moving fast in the daylight desert heat. He is about traveling, relocating, moving, being transferred, fast progress, pursuing. fleeing from, getting out of Dodge.

Strength applies the solution to the problem before it does any harm. Strength finesses a potential threat or an active one: She makes the mugger buddy up to her. She knows how to handle herself, knows how to fix the problem. She is also about stroking, petting, touch. You see her shutting the mouth of the lion that was attacking and is now purring instead … and not liking it.

Three of Cups is what happens when you have handled all those issues: sharing the good life, content and happy, with like-minded friends. You see the three of them celebrating, still friends after sharing the investment and the labor and the proceeds of the harvest.

EXPLANATIONS:

Each and every ‘Tarot Reading’ sentence you see is a literal interpretation of the four Rider Waite Tarot cards drawn and pictured for today. (The literal interpretation is from the illustration on each card.) These sentences are put together by only combining the phrases of what each cards says. In other words, there are NO “filler” phrases added just to make full sentences, and no psychic ability or spirit guide is ever involved.

*Without a question* in a group reading to focus the answer, the four Tarot cards can mean quite contradictory things, especially when the Spread has a card that means ‘no,’ ‘never’ or ‘not.’ These negative modifiers can apply to any one of the other cards.
*Without a question* in a group reading, the pronouns (you, him, her, me, us, them, they, etc.) are more flexible. Whenever you see a pronoun in parentheses, please *feel very free* to substitute another pronoun than the one used. I try to drop pronouns when possible, which, if you’ve noticed, can make for awkward phrasing.

Now in an ‘real’ individual reading, the questioner asks a specific question and thereby supplies at least half the information! In an individual situation, the parties are identified and sometimes a time frame is too. Here, in a group reading we cannot do that and so we get a variety of sentences.

Horoscopes are group readings, too. Astrology is based on someone else’s birth data, though, so a ‘solar’ group horoscope never really solidly applies to you! (Astrologers know this!)

Tarot, on the other hand, is perfectly capable of flexibly addressing any group, including all of the visitors that come to this site. It can also address people you might not even know personally, such as all the people at your job who have a say in whether or not you get a raise.

We have been wondering here lately whether the Tarot Verbatim(TM) sentences are more accurate for regular visitors than they are for people who visit this site only once in awhile or for a short time. Without a question to focus the answer, four cards can mean contradictory things, especially when the Spread has a card that negates other cards. Without a question also the pronouns in a group reading are more flexible, especially in some of these Rider Waite Tarot spreads. When a pronoun is in parentheses, feel very free to substitute. Hermit

Sun – Strength – Eight of Cups

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

Sun and Eight of Cups are both leaving abruptly – very different stories (Sun, impulsively ducks out of the house for a little fun, recklessly; Eight of Cups, a detour or change of direction on a trip, probably for good reason or cause).

Next thing is that in both Strength and Eight of Cups something isn’t going to happen. In Strength, it’s deliberate prevention; in Eight of Cups it’s a detour.

Next is all the cards are outdoors and three of the four are traveling. Sun is just in the back yard; Eight of Cups is on a pilgrimage; Hermit is out on the road looking for travelers in distress.

Both Strength and Hermit have spiritual overtones and are people of self-control and considerable life experience. Strength overcomes (including his/her own weaknesses) and Hermit is the celibate and patient monk. (Make that ‘monogamous man’ these days.)

Sun is a child and Strength is discipline. Hermit is on the road and Eight of Cups is a going out of his way. Sun is a dumb kid and Hermit is a wise old man.

Sun Baby boy has snuck out of the house, against the rules, and is having a great time nude on the wicked pony. Whee, this is fun: He even carries a huge banner in his left little hand. He is obviously oblivious to what the pony is about to do; he is having fun in the sun like a playboy who never heard of child support. Color him a drunken driver or bungee cord jumper.

Reckless, spontaneous, uninhibited, impulsive, brat, child, childish, childish escapade, playboy, leave the house, outing, fun, sunshine, daytime, vacation.

Strength An experienced combatant knows the moves instinctively and is confident about handling yet another martial exercise. This confidence telegraphs itself to would-be attackers. The same is true of social conflict and spiritual conflict. Bullies of any level or department of existence have a sense of smell and they are cowards. They are often friendly to people or entities they even suspect can handle them. Professional courtesy.

Strength exemplifies the concept that when you know how to handle it, it does not present itself. When you have the perfect comeback, no one says that to you anymore, drat it.

Eight of Cups To go the other way. To detour or go another way. To leave early, drop out, quit, change the way, depart from the way (run off the road), to change direction. It’s over before it begins. Abandon or abandoned.

Illustration is a traveler who is forced by the terrain to change direction.

Hermit Out looking, hunting or searching for. Take a look. Looking where you are going. Travel, night travel. Seeing things as they are. You can see. Seeking, learning, and wise or wisdom. A paramedic, physician, doctor or healer of any kind. To be on the path, be spiritual or be sincerely religious (any religion).

Illustration is a monk searching for people to give aid to at night. He carries a lantern which can stand for enlightenment.

An honest person is one who has overcome his/her own sneakiness

You have to understand crooks to handle and overcome them.
An honest person is one who has overcome his/her own sneakiness.
You have to know what their agenda is in order to oppose it.
You have to know what they are up to if you are going to prevent them from doing harm.
She makes an honest man of a guy who is out to get laid.

The one thing he is out to get involves being devoted to a very dominant female.
He is honest with himself about his one-purpose agenda to get her to make him behave.
To seduce a woman of character, a man must be patient and sincere.
Watch her handle forceful opposition by seeming to be on its side.
The main point is to investigate so as not to let subversives in.

He is patient with other people’s blatant attempts to use him: He makes their attempts harmless.
Being wise to a mooch is the only way to prevent its depredations.
He helps her overcome the main thing she has going against her.
She handles supposed friends who come against her, with the help of a friend.
He advises her to be forceful in her defense against betrayals.

Drama here. In the middle we have preventing an enemy from attacking by taming it, the Strength card. It is often a woman doing that. The point is her character creates the ability to nip opposition in the bud. To the left is the Ace of Wands (He seems to show up for dinner often at our table, doesn’t he?) which suggests a forceful attack. To the right is the Six of Wands which suggests a sneaky subversive attack. Both Strength and Ace of Wands are about winning a conflict. If you take Ace of Wands and Six of Wands, you are talking a sexual seduction with an ulterior purpose, and they appear on either side of the lady of character who disciplines snarky defiance and who puts down force. And then above them all we have the Hermit who is sincerity, honesty, devotion, and observing – or a person (most likely male) who is sincere, helpful, honest, devoted, or who observes.

Advice. We talk about character here with the Strength and the Hermit- both a male and a female who are characterized as having character. And we talk about dealing firmly with someone (or the someones) who don’t, who are subversive, who betray friendship. So advice is to observe, to look for snarky behavior around you, and deal with it firmly, not let it do harm. You may have the help of a friend in this project. It is not going to be any big project, no ordeal involved.

Meanings and Illustrations:

Ace of Wands: This Rider Waite Tarot card is crashing the party lately. It means to be firm or forceful, to win or accomplish. So it is living up to its meaning, barging in here. Illustration is a hand with a board in it, which reminds me of a saying my old daddy used to repeat: “Some people, in order to get their attention, you have to hit them in the face with a board.”

Strength: We have already talked at length about her above. Bullies turn into pussycats when they intend to come against her because of who she is. This happens in real life if you just observe. The illustration shows a lady petting the predator lion, holding his mouth closed against the roar, and he is purring instead.

Six of Wands: The false flag, the alleged friend who is out to use you or get you or do you in some way, small or large. Sneaky, snarky, mooch who is gonna embezzle or get his cut behind your back. Yes, the kind of person you watch, which is what the next card after it means, the Hermit. Illustration is of a fella whose horse doesn’t trust him.

Hermit: Here is the monk dedicated to helping travelers who are lost or in distress. He goes out looking for them even at night. He is the kind helpful supportive friend. The phrases he means today are: understand, honest, know, being devoted to, patient and sincere, watch, investigate, patient, being wise to, helps and the help of a friend, advises.

Now that that’s over, there’s going to be a new life of freedom

Two of Swords, Three of Wands, Judgment

Assumes it’s not going to be happening again.
Is not going to be coming back, has gone on.
Is not going to be there for the repeat performance that’s upcoming.
Ignoring the big announcement that that’s not going to be happening.
Assume I will never be going back there again.

Am not going to be surprised because I won’t be there.
He/she is not coming – has broken free.
No future with him/her, he/she is starting some new life.
Now that that’s over, there’s going to be a new life of freedom.
Doesn’t know he/she/it isn’t going to recover.

Said he/she is not going to be there/here.
Tells you there’s no way you are going to be free.
Is not ever going to listen to what you say/is said.
Do not disregard continual alarms.
Always going to be no warnings, so you may as well not even listen.

Am not going to repeat it, will be acting as if I never said it.
Will keep repeating until the very end, as long as long as (Person) isn’t paying any attention.
When it is over you don’t go back, just forget about it and enjoy the new phase of life that is coming.
No way to keep ignoring the news.
When it’s over, you are going to be really happy again.

Can’t forget, so you are going back.
When it’s over, you will be free for a whole new life.
It’s going to be over again before you know it.
Not going to let that go on – will be free as a bird again.
You can’t just forget it, reminders keep coming to you.

The only definitive card – as far as a story or action here – is Judgment, and it isn’t much of one. Its main meanings are something happening again, a return, a new life, a recovery, an announcement, news, an alarm.

We begin with a negating card, the Two of Swords, that in Rider Waite means ‘no way’ primarily. (Negating cards create variety in the kind of spread that we have here, the kind that cards can be read in any order and are not assigned a position that means something.) Then the Three of Wands means it is coming – usually a good thing is coming – so that makes it a future card and it also means continuing action or the word ‘continue.’ The last card means to be free, to ignore or disregard or not pay attention, to be oblivious or not know, to assume, to not be present. And somehow I put them together … amazing, isn’t it?

Advice suggests when it is over you don’t go back, just forget about it and enjoy the new phase of life that is coming.

Meanings and Illustrations:

Two of Swords: We begin with a negating card, the Two of Swords, that in Rider Waite means ‘no way’ primarily. You can’t. The end: in the end, when it ends, etc. The illustration shows a blindfolded woman who has two heavy swords in crossed arms, seated on a stone bench at the very edge of what looks to be a seawall, and there are rocks in the sea.

Three of Wands: This is a simple and limited card. It means it’s coming – profit or something good, usually. Continuing future tense – it is one of the future cards. Often means the word ‘continue.’ Its illustration in Rider Waite is a merchant standing watching the ships come in that bear his merchandise and/or his profit.

Judgment: Today its meanings are: ‘again,’ to do or to occur again, to come back, a repeat performance, an announcement, surprise, to break into a new phase, new life, recover, to say or announce, alarm or warning, repeat, reminder, news, again, a whole new life. The illustration shows a resurrection, folks newly released from their coffins for a new life.

Fool: This is one of the flexible cards. Not paying attention is a main function of Fool: assumes, ignoring, doesn’t know, not listen, disregard, just forget about it, not let on. Being happy and free are also key to Fool. Not present, not going to be there. And then there are what I call the ‘water off a duck’s back’ or the ‘shrug’ meanings such as ‘may as well,’ and ‘as if I had never’ and ‘not let on that.’

The illustration shows a fellow prancing off a cliff, happy as a clam, oblivious. The person epitomizes the slogan ‘Ignorance is bliss.’
