Kind of Cups is the feeling guy, the guy who is emotional (Yay, say the gals in the bleachers) and considerate. This trait (of feeling and being emotional) divides into categories.

A Category 1 King of Cups is a good man, a loving and/or romantic man, a calm and quiet guy, is passive and diplomatic and low key. King of Cups is decent, warmhearted and feels deeply.

A Category 2 King of Cups is the ‘Walter Mitty,’ the weak man, the bureaucrat or pencil pusher or desk job fellow, the ‘suit’ in corporate setting, the passive (or, with other cards, passive-aggressive) man … even government or a government agency.

A Category 3 King of Cups is a drinking man or even an alcoholic. King of Cups with Four of Cups can be a person who is (or who has) given up alcohol. King of Cups with Five of Cups, with its spilled wine and water-under-the-bridge regret, can mean the wasted alcoholic life, and can also refer to giving up the booze because the mourning man has his back to the full cups of wine.

Also, any of the ‘instability’ cards with King of Cups can say ’emotionally unstable.’

King of Cups

King of Cups is the quiet man, the nice guy, the decent well-intentioned man, the emotional man, the gentleman. This meaning extends to a meek man, a passive man. King of Cups is also the man with a weakness, a vulnerability, and that includes being the drinking man or alcoholic (any gender alcoholic, by the way). King of Cups can be the sulking coward sometimes, as well. The flood around his throne, and the fish around his neck, are symbols of that emotionalism.

King of Cups is also the emotionally available man, the lovable man who gets along with his gal. (He is the older warm-puppy to Knight of Cups.)

King of Cups is the vice-president type – the unassertive fellow who gets along with the more-assertive leader. He is also the fellow with a desk job, the clerk or customer service man. He is the diplomat of the crew, the fellow who can mollify the edgy customer and smooth ruffled feathers of people he deals with.

Further, King of Cups is governmental and bureaucratic, so this King of Cups card can represent an agency, a government, or a bureaucracy. Put King of Cups with Justice, and you get, say, the F. B. I. or Justice Department. You also get the man who behaves as he should – the mild-mannered gentlemanly sort. But Two of Cups and Justice is a crooked cop or dirty government tricks.

Justice, first of all, is anything re courts, getting what is deserved, police and judges and lawyers and trials, rules and regulations and laws – whatever goes on in the courthouse. Next, if you think of ‘should’ as the keyword of Justice, most of its meanings will occur to you in context. Here are some words and phrases it calls up today: proper, married to, sobers up, levelheaded, has a right, be straight, in the right way, behaves, sane. Justice also ends up with the word ‘entitled’ in its various applications because of the ‘get what is deserved’ category of meanings.

An influence that isn’t apparent. The role attraction plays in your story. That covers all sorts of situations, from unforeseen consequences of an action, to any sort of cheating, to illicit sex, to a sexual bond or grand passionate love affair. It covers getting sucked into something, fraud, a friendship or love affair designed for self-interest … and taxes. Two of Cups has a spectrum, and is a card that you have to get used to applying. You could say it’s an acquired taste. Today it appears with King of Cups which represents a weakness, and that amplifies the scheming and manipulative end of this Two of Cups card.

What makes Two of Cups the complex of concealed self-interest it is in Tarot Verbatim™ is that caduceus – the winged lion’s head above entwined snakes. It represents magic spells, and is of very ancient origin. Moses used one of its forms when snakes threatened the nomads in the desert he was the leader of. Magic spells are an influence that is behind-the-scene and undeclared.

Keep in mind that the undeclared motive could be ‘for your own good,’ and not overtly ill-intentioned or harmful. So Two of Cups is sales, advertising, propaganda and the like as well. Two of Cups is sweet-talking.

Uh-oh. Here we see elements of a story, an inevitable story, that should not happen. As surely as water innocently entering the area of a whirlpool gets sucked below, a person who is vulnerable to, or who has a weakness for, a dark-side scenario also gets sucked into a situation forming around him or her. We … somewhat unfairly, I guess … compare this dark process to a seduction – a seduction in which a seemingly ordinary kinda guy turns out to be a sexual maestro. Tarot has this proclivity of paralleling things we see as unrelated! King of Cups is a sweet guy; with Two of Cups, he is a good guy who’s ‘good in bed.’

Anyway, the elements of our story are a man who has a weakness, and the schemers who can deliver what said man is vulnerable to, getting him drawn in and hooked. A story of getting taken advantage of through an inborn weakness of personality or character. King of Cups is the mild-mannered man, the man of least resistance. Two of Cups is the conniving team or individual who is out to capitalize upon and victimize an individual with that weakness. And here they are in our story.

So who’s on our third Rider Waite Tarot card base? – well, Justice. Justice provides a few twists to our plots because it means to be sane and to get what is deserved, to be or feel entitled, police, and of course justice itself. Add Justice to the scheme of Two of Cups, and you have a police informant story. You also have those schemers or con artists getting what they deserve. You have ‘feeling entitled to mooch.’ You even have a whisper of ‘It’s my vice that keeps me sane.’ And you have a lot of other dramas.

So, who, around you, is getting drawn into something he or she has a fatal attraction for? I put my nose up and sniff the air when a Tarot story like this appears.

Star

A shapely woman (one of Star’s phrases) is performing a ritual bath. She sings as she pours some potion into the pond. This is a happy performance, and the feeling of feeling good all over is like singing in the shower. Star means to confess love, to be crazy about or wildly enthusiastic about, and to say so.

Star is definitely one of the say/speak/tell theme cards. Star is giving a presentation, a sales pitch, explaining or instructing, a public announcement or press release. Star is news – good news unless otherwise indicated. Talking a lot (even babbling) belongs to star.

 

 

 

King of Cups

You see a man whose seat is surrounded by water, and whose throne is shapeless and without any authority symbols on it. A ship being tossed by waves, in the background, in Rider Waite Tarot, says ‘instability.’ Moreover, he wears a necklace with a large fish on it. King of Cups has two main applications to his meanings: One is the emotional warmhearted good guy, the patient man, the fellow you would expect to have a desk job, her sweetheart. Two is the ineffectual weak fellow, often the heavy drinker. He also is government – any type, any agency, any level, good or bad or neutral.

King of Cups

King of Cups is the quiet type. There’s a spectrum to his meanings. Most often, he is the good guy, the fellow in customer service or with a desk job who is content to be a, shall we say, wage slave. He is the emotional and emotionally available man, the honey of a guy, a gentleman, a sweetheart … good guy. He is the older good guy, and Knight of Cups is the younger. When you see them together in your spread, they are most likely setting a good-guy or sweetheart theme.

King of Cups can also be the snipey type, the resentful, vapid, boring sort of person, or even passive aggressive. He is so famous for being a bureaucrat that this is the main card to stand for government, along with Emperor as a federal government.

Nine of Pentacles does her own thing, is a private person, and minds her own business literally in both senses of the phrase: she is an entrepreneurial type, a very competent person who often has a niche position that insulates her from politics at work. She is associated with ownership of house or land or business, and she definitely owns her space. Unlike other female cards, she isn’t associated with any particular behavior or attitude toward men: She neutral on that and other subjects – arm’s-length. She is associated with money – is at least self-supporting (with no mooches).

I think of Five of Cups as the song ‘Yesterday’ and as water under the bridge. See the bridge? Five of Cups is about waste (spilled wine) and mourning, being sorry, regret, and even repentance. It is also missing someone. Yes, it means simply ‘the past’ at times. Five of Cups is one of the narrow in scope Tarot cards … not too many meanings, and they all are in the same vein.

This card can mean a loss of fluid – a leak (as in brake fluid) or body fluids. You don’t want to see it if you ask about surgery.

I drew these cards to demonstrate Open Office’s malfunctions to a tech person who was remotely connected to my computer, and stuck with them because I had already formatted them. You can see the calm fellow relating to the owner’s disappointment, right? King of Cups is the calm fellow; I’m the owner as Nine of Pentacles; and Five of Cups is disappointment.

Applying them to ‘us’ is another matter. This spread is a good example of how you had best not, willy-nilly, apply the ‘other’ meanings to ‘people cards.’  Nine of Pentacles in self-sufficient, competent, mind-your-own business; King of Cups is emotional, a softie. He can be ineffectual, and he can be a ‘serious drinker,’ which is what some alcoholic fun loving old men who knew each other well referred to their habit as. You can’t use ‘independent’ as the word for King of Cups, nor can you use ‘vulnerable’ for Nine of Pentacles. Just not their cup of tea.

So you – making as many sentences as I do here, and making them without a question or the perspective of a questioner, mostly have to treat each of these people cards as people. And there’s no action, only Five of Cups, which is just one kind of feeling: regret, sadness, mourning, etc.

You will encounter spreads that have impasses and problems like this in your work. If you can’t figure a spread out, re-do it. You can save the cards to mull over later, but usually (once you have some Tarot mileage under your belt) if the cards don’t speak to you it’s because you didn’t concentrate on the question well, or because the question is defective in some way.

So we have stories about regrets about past people we miss – mostly.

Field experience led me to finally realize that the combination of King of Cups and Five of Cups refer to alcoholism and/or to giving up liquor. Five of Cups is giving up liquor and also means a hangover. See if that happens for you. I can rely on it, myself, and we use that here. Another application these two cards have toward one another is King of Cups being weak, ineffectual – even passive-aggressive or whiny, and Five of Cups being a loser. Not nice, but they can mean that.

Five of Wands

Five of Wands’ illustration – five fellows whacking one another with giant boards, which suggests combat, sports, or exercise – brings up meanings of: big effort, fighting, conflict and clashes, sports competition, trying hard, being intensely involved, getting all worked up, exercise, and being combative or even quarrelsome. These meanings don’t just apply to physical activity, though: Conflicts of ideas, opinions, politics, and the internal struggles and conflicts we have within ourselves all belong to Five of Wands too.

Knight of Swords is a mad dash, and represents ‘speedily’ and speed in anything. Knight of Swords is all motion, and the motion can be in any direction and about anything: Speed, as I said, is key. He is hot pursuit or fleeing, or reversing direction – all with great energy in a rush. He is about switching sides sometimes.

Knight of Swords, too, can apply to other-than-physical movements and changes. Knight of Swords is when you are turning around in a hurry, turning your life around, making a comeback, changing your ways, resisting change, are no longer being or doing some thing, are pursuing a new life purpose or life philosophy, are repulsed by who or what or where you were and head in the opposite direction, or are taking out impulsively after some attraction – including chasing tail if there’s a card around that brings that subject up.

Remember that Knight of Swords has a ‘no longer’ strain to its lexicon (category of meanings). The ‘I’m outta here’ feeling. In that case, escape is the focus, not being headed in any particular other direction.

 

King of Cups

King of Cups

King of Cups tends to be the invisible man. You could call him ‘a suit’ and embrace most of his few meanings. He is the low key individual, the gentleman, the good guy, the kind man, the calm and quiet fellow. Meek, patient, man of peace – all those sorts of things.

He is also the weak, mealymouthed, wimpy, passive, dull, lackluster ineffectual, even self-effacing man – the Walter Mitty. He can be the passive-aggressive personality if there’s a card for the aggressive part. Knight of Swords is that card today.

King of Cups is government, government agencies or bureaus, the corporate world (‘corporate America,’ people say), a politician, a bureaucrat, a man with a desk job (don’t forget stockbrokers, bankers, clerks, customer service representatives, etc.).

Lastly, King of Cups is the drinking man. Five of Cups (spilled wine) brings this out, and Four of Cups may speak of his effort to give up drinking.

Page of Pentacles

A young man contemplates the subject pentacle studiously. Page of Pentacles usually translates ‘think’ and ‘feel’ and similar words. He is looking at that pentacle studiously, so he also brings us words like looking, watching, seeing, figuring out, understanding, and even paying attention, but his attention is not obsessive or narrowly focused as Knight of Pentacles’ is.

Many cards can bring just a pronoun in a given sentence, but Page of Pentacles very commonly does: It is the strongest identity card. It therefore can translate simply I, he, you – very often, as well as possessive pronouns like ‘his’ or ‘mine.’ When you add all the words that are along the lines of think, believe, understand, opinion, etc., and put the those together with these pronoun meanings, you get quite a few potential phrases that will recur for this card: He thinks, I think, His opinion, my opinion, what he feels about – and you can take it from there. In brief, Page of Pentacles is perspective.

Page of Pentacles is a young person or trainee or student. He means ‘learning.’ Page of Pentacles sometimes even translates ‘mind’ or ‘mental.’ So the phrase ‘what is on my mind is’ belongs to this fellow. So could ‘It’s all in your head.’

 

Queen of Wands

You can think of Queen of Wands as having a big stick in one hand and a flower in the other, and you can check out that expression on her face of the kindergarten teacher or mother watching, and watching out for, the kids. Queen of Wands is the Mama and the Manager. This is a down-to-earth plainspoken no-nonsense well-organized, capable and confident woman who ‘runs a tight ship.’ You could say she is a double Virgo and that her motto is: Behave. Her funky black cat indicates she doesn’t play ‘straight man’ to comedians.

Queen of Wands is the main Wife card. She can translate ‘wife’ without any other support for that. So she also can translate ‘married woman.’ Watch for her to be the wife of a male card next to Queen of Wands, as with King of Cups here. For this reason, when Queen of Wands appears with a card that is a male person, especially the kings, those two cards can translate ‘couple.’ Look closely before you do that: It’s obvious here.

 

 

King of Cups

King of Cups

King of Cups is usually a support actor, not the star. He is usually good company – not anyone to be worried about, reassuring even. The expression on his face isn’t alert and engaged but disaffected. The flood around his throne, in Rider Waite, tells us this is an emotional person, and the hint of turbulence, with the ship behind him, suggests some instability too (See Two of Pentacles). King of Cups is the quiet type, the polite type, and may be the quiet type with internal baggage or cargo that engrosses and distracts him.

So King of Cups can be a honey of a guy or a sweetheart of a guy, the man who is emotionally available (even warm and fuzzy like Knight of Cups), the gentleman. He can be a bureaucrat, or even government itself, at any level. He can be personnel, or have a desk job.

So King of Cups can also be a weak ineffectual man, a passive or passive-aggressive man, a drinking man, a lackluster sort of fellow, passive or passive-aggressive.

Queen of Wands is the wife, married woman, down-to-earth woman or sensible woman, the type who runs a tight ship at home or at work. The Mama. King of Cups is the quiet man, the emotional or emotionally available man, the gentleman with the warm personality, who may drink, and may have a government or desk job – often an unassuming fellow, sometimes a Walter Mitty ineffectual sort. They make a good couple domestically. Page of Pentacles is looking at them as a couple, thinking about them in some particular way, including picturing himself in this kind of scene. Since Page of Pentacles is a young fellow, he can be contemplating his parents’ relationship.

Queen of Wands also means manager, so we have a sprinkling of that.

Page of Pentacles is one of the identity cards, the strongest one because it has the fewest other meanings. No-nonsense. She is a natural for a manager, and often appears as one. This is a married woman, a wife, the one who he is marrying or is married to. She is so sure of herself you would not think to say she is sure of herself.

King of Cups echoes Knight of Cups (a few years older, same fellow). He is calm, quiet, polite, a gentleman, openhearted in his quiet way, a reassuring fellow to be around. He is a honey of a guy, a sweetheart of a guy. His shadow side is passive-aggressive, or lackluster, ‘the suit’ sort of fellow who may work for government or corporate entities. Mostly, though, he is warm-fuzzy.

King of Cups in his picture – as I see him – has the perfect expression for his meanings. You can see him as the quiet fellow, the drinking man, the lover-not-the-fighter, the vulnerable man, and even the pencil pusher – the fellow with a desk job or the bureaucrat. These are most of his meanings, although King of Cups can be government itself, any level of any of them. The water around him indicates emotion … and it surrounds him.

Seven of Swords

Seven of Swords shows a fellow who is hotfooting it out of enemy camp with all of their weapons that he can carry, and he is carrying them blade down in his bare hands (Duh!), which indicates he is potentially self destructive rather than just being a hero of the conflict. He certainly has the guts to pull it off, which is a major meaning of Seven of Swords. He is also the traitor (One man’s hero is another man’s terrorist, you know.) He is sneaky, which makes him ‘sneaking around’ and betraying his lover in romance spreads. Violation of trust belongs to Seven of Swords, along with ‘traitor’ and ‘double-cross.’ And he is also revenge. Revenge is heedless of consequences quite often, so the blades-in-my-bare-hands might be hinting at that motive.

At any rate, this is a card that appears way less frequently than random distribution, and when you find it on your table, do take a good look.

 

 

Lovers

Lovers

Lovers has so many elements in its illustration. You have Adam and Eve – a couple, two people together, partners in love – upfront. Between them in the background is a volcano – passion, an eruption of any sort, or literally a volcano. You have that funky angel overlooking them who doubles as both surveillance and protection – and the protection includes insurance coverage meanings. Lovers mainly means a connection (of any kind at all) and partners (any kind at all, including love partners).

The main topic here is taking a chance on love, because King of Cups is the emotional and emotionally available man, is your honey, is the gentleman or the mild-mannered good guy; and Lovers is a love (or other) connection; and Seven of Swords is most definitely taking a chance. Since Seven of Swords is such a strong (and usually dastardly) card, it tends to dominate its spreads. However, it means gutsy things too – taking a chance, daring, risque and risk. So we have a good emotional connection on some thin ice. Stories.

King of Cups has few meanings, but does have a spectrum. His main application is the good man, the emotional man, the emotionally available man, her honey, the patient and easygoing fellow, Walter Mitty the lackluster fellow, the heavy drinker, the weak or ineffectual man, the fellow with the desk job or the bureaucrat. He is even the government. King of Cups is the vulnerable man too, and here in this spread we have Seven of Swords ready to violate his trust big time.

Here comes Seven of Swords, that guy! This is the fellow, in the illustrated story, who has the nerve to go into enemy camp (in broad daylight, it looks like!) and make off with their weapons. He may be foolhardy or even self-destructive instead of (or in addition to being) brave, though, since he carries the blades pointy side down in his bare hands. Derring-do. This is the card for special forces, black ops, missions – anything illicit like that. He could even be a terrorist or on a suicide mission (but I have never encountered this). But he is usually up-to-something socially.

In application, on a normal day’s inquiry, though, this is the person who violates trust, who seriously double-crosses or ‘pulls the rug out from under you’ emotionally, financially or in any other way. This is the thief. This is not a friend, necessarily, who betrays you; it may be nothing personal to him, may be like a mugging would be.

Seven of Swords, on the other hand, is the thrill of getting away with it, as well as the heartache of being vulnerable to it … like when something gets the best of you, and also like when you pay them back. Seven of Swords is the risk factor. Seven of Swords is having the guts to do it. Seven of Swords is sometimes advice to take that chance.

Seven of Swords is also revenge and vengeance, a kind of ‘Fuck with me, and I fuck with you’ attitude that disregards risk to accomplish evening a score. Haven’t we all been there to some degree at some time or another?

In romance, Seven of Swords is cheating, sneaking around, and betraying trust.

Lovers is one of the most complex cards. It has a lot of unrelated meanings. It means connection of any kind, but you feel it never quite connects, itself. Don’t trust it to mean ‘loves you’ – look for verification. You see Adam and Eve with their respective trees, a volcano in the distance (passion – and it can be literal once in a while, an eruption or an actual volcano). You see an angel that doesn’t look like a guardian angel to me, what with the orange and green hairdo, the red wings … more like the angel that evicted them from the garden, more like surveillance. But the guardian angel is one of its meanings, nevertheless. And so is surveillance.

Lovers can be a connection to God, since you have people, and the angel in the sky. This card can also indicate protection (including divine protection, of course), and even insurance – yes, literally, an insurance coverage.

The two people bring in partnership as well. Love partners is a common interpretation. Lovers is also one of the cards that indicates propinquity (standing next to or nearby), since they are, well, standing next to one another. Once in a great while this Lovers card just means ‘together’ or ‘two people’ as in ‘Two people were there.’

King of Cups and Seven of Swords      King of Cups and Seven of Swords combine the good, vulnerable, emotional and affectionate sweetheart of a guy (King of Cups in person) with taking a chance, something getting the best of him, a dangerous adventure or liaison, cheating, getting even, thieving, taking foul advantage, crime, getting away with something, pulling it off, risk, being sneaky, living dangerously and ‘behind your back’ stuff. King of Cups as the calm unassertive fellow appears here either as the vulnerable victim of skulduggery, or as the respectable-type fellow who gets away with the skulduggery. (If respectable police found, say, lovable Marcus Welby, M.D.’s fingerprints on the robbed safe, don’t you think they would double-check?) King of Cups does suggest that ‘Nice guys finish last.’

King of Cups and Lovers    King of Cups and Lovers combine the easygoing loving man with a love relationship, so ‘the love of a good man’ is their signature headline, or ‘me and my honey.’ A love affair with a quiet man. King of Cups is a quiet man, like High Priestess is the quiet woman. He could be quiet about the love affair itself, of course. I love a guy who is a gentleman, because King of Cups is a gentleman. King of Cups as a good guy is a good partner, and Lovers is partners.

Other meanings: King of Cups is the drinking man and is government-anything – the bureaucrat or the bureaucracy, at any level. So we get phrases like: drinking buddies, and ‘connected with some agency’ and even ‘government is your partner’ because Lovers is the partner and the connection.

Lovers’ connection-with-the-divine meaning makes ‘godly man’ when it hitches up with King of Cups.

Seven of Swords and Lovers     Seven of Swords and Lovers is an uh-oh combination. It combines risky dangerous treachery (Seven of Swords) with a direct partnership-type connection, and even with the one you love (Lovers). These two are a major alert unless surrounding cards remove the stinger. It helps that Seven of Swords also means ‘daring.’ The best meaning in love spreads for this combination is ‘taking a chance on love,’ or ‘We take a chance on one another,’ so try them first. (Sigh.)

Seven of Swords is sneaking, so, sneaking around behind someone’s back – and Seven of Swords is betrayal and double-cross. There’s a movie – a classic one – whose title is either ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ or ‘Les Liaisons Dangeroux.’ That could be the headline for Seven of Swords and Lovers in love spreads. You know what Lovers is. Seven of Swords obviously is the risky, dangerous, traitor.

Seven of Swords means ‘criminal,’ and therefore means ‘illicit,’ so you have ‘illicit love affair’ as well as ‘cheating lover.’ Ouch!

Seven of Swords can be crime, and Lovers does mean partners, so you have ‘partners in crime.’ That can be tongue-in-cheek or it can be serious. Once again, look to the other cards!

Seven of Swords means both ‘betrayal’ and ‘getting even,’ so sometimes it means ‘getting even for the betrayal.’

Seven of Swords means ‘pull it off’ and Lovers is partners (therefore buddies) so ‘These buddies (have the guts to) pull anything off.

Seven of Swords is living dangerously – maybe the daring and edgy type of person – and Lovers suggests being godly because of that angel overlooking the lives of those humans – so you have a godly person who lives dangerously.

Seven of Swords is someone … or something … getting the best of (you). Lovers can simply mean ‘our’ or ‘we’ or ‘us.’ So our … something or another … is getting the best of us.
