King of Wands

King of Wands is a guy. He has this fiery nature, as an astrologer or a Middle Ages person would say. He is often a doer, has a lot of energy, and does things impulsively rather than plans. Insight is not one of his traits. He is unpredictable. He is also the passionate man, the live wire, Type A. As a matter of fact, this card can represent male hormones. In Tarot, he is often the workingman, the husband, the fellow with the temper.

Judgment

Judgment changes things, as what’s buried comes to life, what left comes back, and sudden surprises shift reality in a very public and obvious way. The angel’s horn wakes the dead to judgment, which makes this a legal card. Some of the meanings that arise from Judgment’s illustration are enlightenment; to speak, say, talk or tell; a message or news; change; suddenly; a surprise; new life; many words beginning the the prefix ‘re’ like renew, reminder, revitalization, recycle, etc.; again; next.

Here is how the illustration makes the main meanings of Judgment, repeated from above, from Learn Tarot by Observing: “The angel’s horn (a loud noise, alarm, an announcement) awakens the dead (awakening, to wake up), who are alive again (a change, recovery, new phase, and reverting to a former state). The water the coffins float in symbolizes consciousness and/or mass consciousness. When that meaning blends with the ‘new life’ meanings, you get ‘new awareness,’ and ‘epiphany,’ hence enlightenment.”

Ace of Cups

Ace of Cups is all good. Its main meanings are love, unconditional love, peace, agreeing and allowing, cooperation, an easy flow, a literal flow, innocence, benefit, no harm or harmless, health, relaxation, being good or ethical.

The picture here doesn’t help much until after its meaning is laid out for you. The central idea is that a human’s connection to God, the source of life, flows through the person and into the surroundings, into mass consciousness, making the world a better place. The drawing is from a still-famous writing in the fifteen-hundreds about abundance from God being like a fountain that is filled from below and always full.

The way that idea is depicted here is that the dove is Holy Spirit, who has the wafer of the Christian communion ceremony in its beak, the ‘W’ means something holy in the Roman Catholic church (I think), and the five streams are five senses (modern) or five ‘bodily humors’ (Middle Ages). This is one of the cards inserted into the deck to deflect accusations of Tarot being the devil’s work, charges that would get you killed back then.

Now Without The Pictures

This is an old story of husband (or workingman, or the passionate man or angry man) coming back, and/or changing his nature, and being loving. Hardly any other subject today.

King of Wands’ illustration, based on Middle Ages concepts, as many of Rider Waite’s cards are, signal an impulsive, uninhibited, angry man. The live salamander, and the salamander print on the tapestry behind him, are a symbol of the ‘fiery nature’ re the element of fire. People back then believed salamanders breathed and exhaled fire. They believed the element of fire was associated with eruptions of temper and impetuous acts. (Yes, they believed everything that existed was made up of earth, air, fire and water – the astrological elements to this day. Go figure.) That is how King of Wands gets to be Archie Bunker.

Judgment is about Judgment Day, and its spectrum of meanings, as usual, arise from its illustration. The angel’s horn (a loud noise, alarm, an announcement) awakens the dead (awakening, to wake up), who are alive again (a change, recovery, new phase, and reverting to a former state). The water the coffins float in symbolizes consciousness and/or mass consciousness. When that meaning blends with the ‘new life’ meanings, you get ‘new awareness,’ and ‘epiphany,’ hence enlightenment.

Some of the meanings that arise from Judgment’s illustration are enlightenment; to speak, say, talk or tell; a message or news; a surprise; new life; many words beginning the the prefix ‘re’ like renew, reminder, revitalization, recycle, etc.; again; next; and sudden.

Ace of Cups is another Rider Waite card associated with religion. A mystical saint wrote a book that had a famous analogy that God’s love was immeasurable like a fountain that was filled from below. The five streams from the fountain represent the five senses of the human, or ‘five bodily humors’ of Middle Ages belief. The dove stands for Holy Spirit, and the ‘W’ is also a symbol of the Roman Catholic church. The idea is that a human’s awareness is a conduit for God’s presence to flow out into the world. This is how Ace of Cups gets its religious and spirituality meanings.

Ace of Cups is ‘good.’ It means ‘benefit and no harm.’ It means health, cooperation, agreement, love, flow, easy, innocence, peace, allow, and similar phrases.

King of Wands and Judgment    King of Wands and Judgment combine the man (wild man, husband, Type A driven fellow with a temper, passionate fellow) with a change, epiphany, something being said, coming back or new phase. So you have phrases like: wild man is coming back; redneck suddenly turns into; new phase of passion; new hot guy in her life; husband comes back; he said something in passion; he isn’t mad anymore; so loud when he has a tantrum; the madman is back; he gets his energy back; something makes a change in him.

Judgment and Ace of Cups     Judgment and Ace of Cups Today’s Tarot cards are about a fellow’s love life mainly, and the fellow is gone from here, so Ace of Cups’ meanings are fewer than usual. It is all about love, with a sprinkle of peace, accepting, cooperating, being a pussycat, God, calming down, health and healing and ‘all good.’ Judgment’s phrases refer to coming back, suddenly having a new phase, the spoken word, becoming something and not being something else, a new thing, and loud. King of Wands

Christians have a word for King of Wands: the natural man. It’s a slur from their perspective. Doing what comes naturally is not Biblical. King of Wands reflects the Middle Ages concept of fiery nature attributed to redheads because red is associated with salamanders (See his pet salamander and salamanders in the pattern above his throne.), and salamanders breathe fire. They called them dragons in Europe in those days because somehow these lizards belched a little foggy stuff. The poor things went extinct, what with knights having to make a name for themselves.

So King of Wands is Archie Bunker: impulsive, uninhibited, opinionated, irritable and edgy.

 

 

Fool

Fool

Fool as the zero is the starting point, so he represents whatever was before creation happened: the potentiality. Needless to say, not many stories are going to involve that directly. Think of Fool as the blank, the open mind before anything fell into it. The deepest level of Fool is that a spiritual adept is exempt from some physical reality. But we are not using that much either, are we?

So Fool isn’t paying attention, is dissociated from what’s going on below. This is the nut of its practical applications. Fool is not knowing, being oblivious to reality, being ignorant of the fact, being devil-may-care. Fool ignores an acts as if, or acts as if not. Fool doesn’t mind and doesn’t care. Sometimes he is an assumption, and sometimes he is not present!

Judgment

Judgment has meanings to spare! We use quite a few of them, and they all grow out of the angel blowing the horn so loud people suddenly begin life again, becoming their next self. So today we use: become, comes alive, suddenly, changes from, again, all of a sudden, gets over, and next. Judgment is a citizen of the speak/call/say/tell/announce theme, and we make use of that, along with ‘holler’ which combines the speak/say/tell theme with the ‘loud noise’ meaning of Judgment. We also use ‘promoted,’ since promotion is a new phase of life.

Now Without The Pictures

Fool is ‘footloose and fancy free.’ It comes from being the ‘zero,’ the placeholder, the cipher, in the deck. Fool is associated with youth, with optimism and with not knowing, being oblivious. Fool is the subconscious – the lead card for all things subconscious. The zero is a nascent stage – that’s how that meaning gets to be his. So Fool lives ‘out there’ and is ‘not with us.’

King of Wands is the polar opposite of Fool. King of Wands is very much in the physical world and is a very plugged-in hands-on physical man – the impulsive, edgy, irritated, uninhibited common man. The redhead. You could say the red-blooded redhead. (The redhead thing actually accounts for his meanings. You can find that story on this site if you just Google ‘King of Wands Tarot Verbatim.’

But in their very different ways, Fool and King of Wands are both acting naturally, letting it flow. Fool is tuned into nonphysical reality as he traipses to cliff edge leading his charmed life (?fools and drunks?). King of Wands is letting it flow from his body chemistry, reacting to whatever stimulus he encounters.

So how appropriate that our other card means a change, a new life, and recovering.

Judgment and Fool are both about newborn experience. Fool is coming out of nowhere, and Judgment is being reborn or is starting anew.

Ten of Pentacles is one of three marriage cards in Tarot Verbatim™. The marriage cards also are buildings, and represent groups of people, or societies, from the couple, family, clan, city/county/state/nation/international groups both private and political. Ten of Pentacles is the negative one; the other two are stable and/or happy.

So … you got it … our Ten of Pentacles has a lot of ground to cover: any sort of trouble, problem, disagreement, out-of-sorts or messed-up people. Today it even translates ‘trouble’ several times: trouble; with the troublemaking friends; his troubles, trouble at home, in his troubled marriage; you’ve got trouble in your relationship, in the throes of a complicated situation. In Tarot Verbatim™ King of Wands is the husband or any phrase that means that. Queen of Wands is the Wife in Tarot Verbatim™, which is how Mr. King of Wands gets to be Husband, I think. Anyway, that designation includes phrases like these today: the man you marry; him marrying; he is married.

And then, as the redhead, Mr. King of Wands is the angry/irritated/frustrated man. This is a bit of a complication in that we make an effort to separate ‘husband’ from ‘mad man’ or ‘madman.’ And here are today’s words for the ill-tempered side of Mr. King of Wands: low-class guy; out of frustration; when he is angry; that make you mad; my cranky ways; troubled man; he gets mad; being mad about.

Judgment – Our illustration brings us a long list of categories of meanings for Judgment. Page of Pentacles means to think, perspective, to ponder or consider, including to consider oneself to be this or that type of person, or consider another person that way. It can be an attitude.

Queen of Wands has good common sense, and represents a very conscious down-to-earth, practical and pragmatic view. You find her saying “Right’s right and wrong’s wrong.”

We start with the sudden new phase or level, a rejuvenation, a coming alive, a revival of life, a new awareness or consciousness, in Judgment.

Page of Pentacles, another card that means awareness slides in next to Judgment. Identity is a main focus of this Rider Waite Tarot card in Tarot Verbatim™. Often it translates as ‘self’ (or himself or herself, etc.) Perspective, attitude, opinion are his. So are ponder, think about, and similar phrases. This is a thoughtful student or apprentice when it is being a person.

Then along comes Queen of Wands who brooks no nonsense, no foo-foo stuff – don’t trouble her with your theories about things. She is a kindergarten teacher: Kids understand her pragmatic and practical, physical way of thinking and experiencing. Judgment The awakening angel brings his trumpet-alarm to get us up out of the coffin on Judgment Day, and we suddenly have a new life, return to our former state (being alive), recover (from death). These are its main meanings. It also is a sudden realization of a new reality or new level of life. Judgment means suddenly, a loud noise, an announcement, a change (for the better, usually), and legal processes. It represents near-death experiences too.

This Rider Waite Tarot citizen often means: I am, he/she is, me, who I am, what I am (as in I am a wife or whatever). Queen of Wands Good sense. The Manager of her real physical world, she runs a tight ship, she is The Mama as well as the wife – practical and pragmatic. A stick in one hand and a flower in the other, See? Not to mention the black cat. She is about the house, about living in a place and organizing things. Symbolism is simple: Hand with gold in it over the straight and narrow path or right road, lilies for purity in front and a rose arbor for victory at its end.
