Synopsis |
I have my own truth from my own path-perspective. Even absolute truth is relative on this relative plane, so I am out searching for other people’s perspectives of their truth on their path. Maybe their handle on it is from a different end than mine – like the blind men examining the elephant. Knight of Pentacles
Tough guy, rough guy, macho man: his stereotype. Pictured here, along with his steed, as short and stocky, sturdy. Horse is stock still as man ponders his pentacle. This staring, this concentrating on one thing, is Mr. Knight of Pentacles’ central cluster of meanings. He is a guy-guy – rough, tough, manly, macho, all the way up to punk. He is very physical, even more than Eight of Pentacles and King of Wands.
Knight of Pentacles calls up all sorts of words and phrases about belief, opinion, thinking, concentrating, focus and aim. (So does Queen of Cups).
The ‘one thing on his mind’ is often self-interest, and is often a dame, as it is today.
Queen of Cups
Queen of Cups is a girly-girl, part blond and foo-foo, part figuring it out, and part smart woman. ‘She knows’ is her favorite translate – and all its rephrasings. ‘She understands’ is one of those. She knows, understands, has figured out, and has faith in, her man. This is the true blue loyal wife or girl friend, and the ‘true believer.’ She has faith.
Her dreamy foo-foo side shows in the illustration as that staring at some funky decoration as flood waters snake around her throne.
Hermit
Hermit is realistic, objective, analytical, practical and observant. He goes out in the cold with a light looking for people to bring home and feed at the monastery. He represents the facts and the truth, and represents searching for the facts and the truth. So he is an investigator. He is a doctor (his clothing), and he is helping people in distress, so he is a counselor and healer. Naturally he will come up as sincere and sincerity, and as a friend. The illustration tells us he is an old man, so he is ‘the wise old man.’

All three of our Rider Waite Tarot cards are about thinking. Knight of Pentacles has one thing on his mind (possibly his table-mate Queen of Cups); Queen of Cups is pondering and dreaming, and has faith usually in her man; Hermit is objective and represents the facts, as well as the quest for truth or facts. And here they are putting their heads together in different ways for us.
Knight of Pentacles is a tough, opinionated, macho man in his stereotype. He is short and stocky like his sturdy horse. ‘Obsessed’ belongs to him. Knight of Pentacles is the lead card for that. Queen of Pentacles is the dreamy chic who is a good woman or good girl in her stereotype. She is kind of obsessed, in her way, staring at that gizmo while the flood circles her seat.
Queen of Pentacles is ‘the believer,’ as in Eric Hoffer’s True Believer; and Hermit is the truth, the facts, and is faith in a religion. Queen of Cups has faith in her man: She understands him and still has a high opinion of him. Maybe that’s why he is obsessed with her. Hermit, by the way, means ‘looking for,’ in a very general way. See him on the road with his light?
