Six of Pentacles is giving or receiving attention or money, is an exchange or a transaction of any kind, and is getting what one deserves, in both senses of that phrase. It also serves as a justice card.

Star is being happy or glad, is having something or a lot to say, is feeling happy or good (or healthy), is being enthusiastic or gung-ho, is loving and saying ‘I love you.’

None of our spread-mates mean the same thing.

Four of Swords is not participating, not doing anything, being a couch potato or being retired. It is also being indifferent, which means not paying attention, and it sits next to Six of Pentacles which is ‘paying attention.’ Four of Swords is staying and is ‘used to it.’

Four of Swords makes all those Six of Pentacles phrases about giving or getting ‘not giving’ and ‘not getting. Four of Swords is indifference, and it sits next to wildly enthusiastic Star. Four of Swords is not responding, and it sits next to Star who is spilling its guts, doing a sales pitch, loving and saying ‘I love you.’

Six of Pentacles       Six of Pentacles shows an employer weighing the gold coins he pays the help with. He is being fair because their value is by weight as wear happens, not by face amount. That makes Six of Pentacles a justice card: the scales along with the story. Six of Pentacles applies to paying and receiving money, and applies to a fair exchange or transaction. It especially applies to the paycheck, of course.

In real Tarot practice, Six of Pentacles equally applies not only to paying money but paying attention, paying respect, giving credit for what is done, and giving and getting what is deserved.

Four of Swords      Four of Swords just lies there all by himself. Most of his meanings arise from that. He also is about meditating (hence about spiritual life, and hence does belong to that theme). A knight candidate has to overnight in the cathedral, meditating on his life purpose as a knight, lying next to the relic that church has of some saint or hero. That is what our Four of Swords fellow is doing: a vision quest.

Four of Swords main translates are: not participating, not doing, rest and sleep, to be indifferent, to stay, to be used to, retired, to not respond. When it joins an action card, it negates the action, so Four of Swords ends up acting like a negator even though, strictly speaking, it isn’t one.

Emperor      I don’t know where he hides out in the deck, but Emperor, when I had fifteen years of index cards on two-card combinations, had the fewest cards in its box. He is a man of few words, what can I say.

Anyway, Emperor is, esoterically, as Number 4, the finished product, the end of the process or activity, and is therefore associated not only with being established, and being the most powerful position, but with stagnation and rigidity … you know … hidebound. Three of Wands      Today in its present Tarot company, Three of Wands is encouraging and reassuring in contrast to Five of Cups’ discouraging perspective. Three of Wands is good things ahead (and Five of Cups is bad things past). The good things aren’t just money but refer to a good outlook, good situations, good circumstances. ‘Ahead’ is the key word here: Three of Wands is future oriented. And not only future, but continuing, ongoing … even always.

Three of Wands is looking ahead with hope, well-founded hope. Its ‘good things coming’ arises from past efforts, because the merchant in the picture has made his investment, and put his goods on those ships, and now here comes his profit on those same ships. He knows his money is there.

Six of Swords is avoiding and Four of Swords isn’t participating. Six of Swords is going the other way, and Four of Swords is staying put.

The closest we come to action for a story is Two of Wands meaning financial security. ‘Leaving or staying, you have financial security’; ‘Get out of investment you are holding’; ‘Leave: There’s no financial security here.’

With two cards being about avoiding, and one about the future, obviously our message is on not doing, on withdrawing. Four of Wands       It helps to know that the picture here is of a public celebration of a celebrity wedding, a society wedding between Very Important People. THAT is what makes this Four of Wands card mean all these membership and belonging concepts. That is what makes it about identifying oneself as a family member or company representative. That is what makes it about background and ‘roots.’

The society wedding makes Four of Wands about Establishment as well as about marriage. All the marriage cards expand membership in the family (or a couple) to neighborhood, city, county, region, state, nation, world – but Four of Wands, directly associated with the power structure, reflects the court house, political parties, large companies and corporations, public and political gatherings and public buildings.

Four of Wands is one of the marriage cards, so Page of Wands is a married fellow. He is Prince Charming – young, good-looking, well-dressed, well-spoken, clean-cut – the good guy, the ‘fair-haired boy,’ meaning the teacher’s pet.

Page of Wands      You see a young man standing up straight, fresh-faced and earnest, good-looking and well-dressed. This is the fellow starting out in life looking for his fortune, ready and willing to fit in. Pages are apprentices: They were sent to another noble family for their training in knighthood. You can see how well Page of Wands, therefore, fits with Four of Wands – the noble and respectable family.

Page of Wands belongs to the theme: speak, say, announce, talk or tell. He is the representative of a company or organization (spokesperson).

As the person who is ‘putting his best foot forward,’ who is looking his best to impress others, Page of Wands is about identifying oneself as a certain type of person, is about identifying with something, and is about being proud of who you are and what you are. This card can go one step beyond that concept to mean ‘name.’ It can also bring up the phrase ‘in the name of’ or ‘in his name’ (or her name).

Six of Swords      You see broken people leaving, being paddled away at dusk or twilight in an open boat, no luggage to their name, a mother and child. It means all those words and phrases about being held back: stymied, helpless, blocked, can’t, unable, disabled, shut-in, locked up, contained, damper, stalled, suffocating effect, limited, impossible, stifling … and even dead. Well, next to all that is the release from it; next to death is resurrection or afterlife – in Judgment. Next to being locked in or locked up is being released, being free. If you could choose a card to put next to Eight of Swords, Judgment would be your first choice.

Looking to the remaining card, it too could not be a better choice: Three of Cups is celebrating, enjoying, sharing, being together, and friends.

So our strongest story is being very happy to get out of someplace you were stuck – you or someone else, of course.

It’s interesting that the Tarot cards on either side of Judgment are really elements of its meaning: Three of Cups is the happy rejoicing people; Eight of Wands is the death state.

Three of Cups      The story in this picture is that three women (and the card doesn’t always refer to women partners) are toasting the success of their joint venture, a pumpkin patch. They have shared in the effort, and they are sharing in the reward, and they are still fast friends after splitting the proceeds as partners or joint venturers in the project.

So Three of Cups is about celebrating, sharing, sharing profit, shareholders, a team or team members, being friends, enjoying life together, friends getting together, getting along together, agreeing and being agreeable together, the consensus, partying, being happy, feeling good, a business or enterprise that makes a profit, and a meeting of three people. [Yes, like Three of Pentacles, this card will volunteer that three people are involved or are present.]

Getting together for drinks, too. The camaraderie, good feeling, of Three of Cups makes it girls’ night out, dating, a party, party girls or debutantes or socialites or ‘the girl gang.’ Watch for this card to mean lesbian friends too, because one of the women in the picture has her arm around another – but usually that subject will be brought up by the question.

About the consensus: Three of Cups belongs to the consensus theme, like Ten of Cups and, to a little lesser extent, Three of Pentacles. Three of Cups also fits in with the ‘agree’ and ‘agreeable’ theme, like Lovers, Temperance, Ace of Cups, Knight of Cups and Six of Cups.

Judgment       The illustration here puts many trunks and branches to Judgment’s meaning tree. You see the angel sounding the alarm that wakes the dead on Judgment Day. You see people come to life after death. You see their coffins floating on a sea (consciousness, mass consciousness); you see the equal-sided cross on the angel’s flag, which stands for the meeting or intersection of the spiritual level with the physical level. You see happy people, and people who are glad to be free (of death of course). And you see the word ‘judgment,’ a legal word.

Judgment is the moment of new birth, of resurrection from a past life form, new life, new phase – the butterfly coming out of the confinement of the cocoon, getting free of the limitations or the box (literally, here in the picture!) you were in; that life-changing eureka epiphany; enlightenment and salvation and inspired life-changing moments; realization, discovery (including ‘discovery’ in the legal sense of investigating and including something coming to light in some investigation); ‘getting it’; that magic moment we drop out of our profile and into a new self, the awakening to new awareness, an outbreak of something, or ‘popping up.’ Judgment is leaving death behind for something new, untried, and we hope better. Judgment emphasizes the moment of realization, the waking up from sleep.

Judgment is a wake-up call … obviously; an alarm; a loud noise. It is also the playing of a musical instrument, especially a horn.

Judgment belongs to the ‘return’ or ‘come back’ theme … reverting to a former condition, state, or place, as the people revert back to being living creatures.

So some of the very frequent and more mundane meanings for Judgment are: again, suddenly, change, sudden change, news, publicity, go back or come back, and any of the words and phrases that mean to announce, say or tell.

As a legal card – which simply grows out of the title of this Tarot card – Judgment is being put on notice; a verdict or decree, or a ruling, including a final ruling. It can be testimony – a statement, what someone said even in a deposition.

Here are the words Judgment contributes to today’s one-sentence readings: recovering; I change … going to be; epiphany; revives; discovered; I am out of; eureka; turned that around; afterlife; now he realizes, what I am about to say; there’s talk; like I used to, anymore; and they said; telling; do that again; says; you told me; life after death; I am out again; gets out; out of my … life again; happen again; getting free; not anymore; being promoted; renew; loud enough to; saying things.

Eight of Swords       We have an uninjured woman, surrounded by heavy swords barely stuck in wet ground, loosely blindfolded and loosely tied, standing alone, far from the nearest building, in daylight. Sometimes we feel stuck when we haven’t tested the binding … and sometimes the binding is self-imposed.

Eight of Swords shares with Devil the idea that our attachments that limit us are voluntary: The chains are loose around the Adam and the Eve figure in Devil, and the bindings of Eight of Swords are loose too, and no one’s around.

The most general meaning of Eight of Swords is limitations, and a frequent word for that is ‘can’t.’ Eight of Swords can be that ‘I can’t’ or the ‘You can’t’ that vetoes action. It expresses the ‘I can’t’ that really means ‘I don’t want to and am not going to.’

Eight of Swords is trapped, frozen in place and paralyzed into inaction. She is in a fix, and the distant dwelling above on the steep hill can be a hint that the fix is social or family life. But the artist put it almost out of the picture because Eight of Swords is meant to be very general: any kind of limitation at all. It often translates ‘what holds you back.’ Even procrastination fits this Eight of Swords profile: preventing yourself from action. Eight of Swords can be ‘hands are tied’ or ‘tied up in a meeting.’

This card’s helpless feeling makes it the primary card for death. Naturally, its death meaning is infrequent – but real. Eight of Swords can translate ‘fatal’ next to a danger or disease card.

Arising out of its ‘limitations’ set of meanings, and along the lines of its ‘unable to’ meanings, Eight of Swords is about handicaps and disabilities as well as death. Paralysis of any sort (literal or figurative), limitation of movement, being in a cast – especially a full-body cast.

Besides its social meanings, Eight of Swords has some mechanical ones. Eight of Swords also means a container, literally, to be in a container (common for lost-article questions) and to be shut in, and ‘locked,’ including a safe, or a person locked up. Watch for it being advice to lock something up. In this vein, once in a while, Eight of Swords refers to a pen, an enclosure for animals.

So generally, Eight of Swords can mean: stuck, stymied, stifled, impossible, cramped, contained, prevented from, shut down, frozen, dead to, suffocated, ineffective, boxed in, void, defunct, and any such word or phrase.

We tell ourselves we can’t. We tell others we can’t. We don’t always mean it. ‘I can’t do that,’ whether said inwardly or outwardly, means things like ‘I don’t choose to’ and ‘I don’t want to deal with what happens if I do it,’ which includes having failed to do whatever it is. As regular visitors to Tarot Verbatim™ Land know, Ten of Pentacles in Tarot Verbatim™ is people who are a problem or people who have a problem, and is the mob or power people in a pejorative way, as well as those troublemaking neighbors, relatives (or other bunches of people). (We have lots of cards that flatter those guys, don’t you worry!)

And here Ten of Pentacles is in the center of our story. To its left is: No way! – not having any of that – Don’t – Not gonna … and any other such sentiment. That’s Four of Cups, you know. To the right is Six of Pentacles, which divides the stories into different categories. So we have money exchanges regarding troublesome people (or trouble); we have paying respect regarding those no-class folks; and we have refusing input from groups we consider pests. We have these stories – lots of them – in detail.

Four of Cups……….Four of Cups is one of the first cards you learn. It says ‘No!’, and says it as many times as it takes. No way, Jose. What part of ‘no’ don’t you understand – the ‘N’ or the ‘O’? He is seated. He has arms and legs crossed. He is looking away from the offered chalices. Four of Cups doesn’t have to be that level of rejection, though; it can simply refer to ‘having no (whatever).’ Of course it means ‘to refuse’ and ‘there won’t be any,’ and similar phrases like ‘Don’t’ and ‘not going to.’ Here are other translates for this Four of Cups card for today’s sentences: won’t be any, haven’t been, never, I get no, disowns, staying out of, don’t let, unwanted, opt out.

Ten of Pentacles………..Ten of Pentacles is the dysfunctional (sleazy, criminal … any bad thing you can think of) bunch of people. Those nogoodniks. Those pests. THEM. Yeah, ‘them’ is the perfect short title for Ten of Pentacles. Ten of Pentacles is the trouble and the troublemakers and the people who endure either or both. It can be the ghetto or the boardroom, the street gang or the elite gang.

Six of Pentacles……….Six of Pentacles, what’s a Nice Card like YOU doing in a place like THIS? Six of Pentacles is giving and/or receiving, an exchange (usually of money or attention or treatment, including medical treatment). Six of Pentacles is respect; is paying your bills; is being fair and square and living up to your part as the other side of the exchange does the same. Six of Pentacles is giving them what they deserve (which, yes, can be revenge), and getting what you deserve. ‘Getting what’s coming to you.’

Remember that Four of Cups and Six of Pentacles say ‘Pay no attention’ or ‘not paying attention’ as well as ‘Get no respect’ and ‘Have no respect for.’ And Ten of Pentacles and Six of Pentacles are those ‘slows’ who don’t pay their bills.

….. …….…… ….. ………, Here we have three Rider Waite Tarot cards all of whom have few basic meanings. This makes fewer sentences possible, and less variety in their words.

Three of Wands is money and good things coming your way. Six of Pentacles is getting your due, and giving them their due, is receiving or paying money, and receiving or paying respect or attention.

With two out of three cards meaning getting paid or paying, or money coming in, you have a too-rich theme. It’s difficult to find a variety of interpretations. You fall back on Three of Wands meaning ‘continuing’ and making the sentence future, and Six of Pentacles meaning paying a fine, getting what is deserved, getting credit for something, and getting attention.

The third card too has few branches to its tree. Knight of Wands is in a hurry or rushing or speeding, is leaving or fleeing, and also means to pursue. It is about putting a lot of energy into something too, about being gung-ho about something.

So just about every one-sentence reading is about money exchanges.

Six of Pentacles also means to pay, to give and to receive respect and/or attention, and fairness or a fair exchange – business. Knight of Wands      You see a fellow with a panic look as his mount rears. He carries his weapon, a board, down. Hurry, rush, speeding: This is the main thought for Knight of Wands. Like Knight of Swords, it means both pursuing and fleeing, coming and leaving. Knight of Wands is putting all his energy into something – chasing his dream or his girl. He is on the road and in a hurry, which brings up speeding. He is leaving town … getting out of Dodge, going AWOL, or has the police on his tail, or is relocating, moving to a different town. You often find Knight of Wands, as today, next to ‘money coming’ cards, so that he is chasing money.

Three of Wands      Three of Wands has as few meanings as Knight of Wands does. You see a well-dressed fellow patiently waiting for ships in the harbor to dock. Story is, they bear his profit. Three of Wands is ‘Your ship is coming in’ or ‘The check really is in the mail.’ Three of Wands is mostly about money, or other good things, coming in. It also means waiting, means ‘looking forward to,’ and it is a big ‘future’ card, putting nearby Tarot neighbors into future tense and supplying words that mean ‘future.’

Six of Pentacles      In the scene on the card, an employer pays wages by weighing the gold coins on a scale, to pay scrupulously the actual value of the coins rather than the face value. Fairness, a fair exchange, paying labor, and workers getting a paycheck are featured in the illustration, but the application includes giving a person his or her due, getting credit for your accomplishments, getting what you deserve, getting and giving attention, getting and giving recognition or respect. Six of Pentacles can be about an exchange, a sale, a delivery.

The scales, added to its fairness theme, draw Six of Pentacles into being one of the minor legal cards. It means a legal proceeding, and can be about paying fines or about being served (with papers). It can be a settlement in which you either pay or get paid, and Three of Pentacles is the main settlement card.

We remark today that being recognized and respected, and getting the attention you are due is a similar feeling and a similar situation to getting paid, and that fairness is a factor in both of these exchanges.

Two of Wands has control of money (and real estate), has an overview of his situation, and has a plan for its future – a sure thing. Strength has the insight and foresight to see impending problems and prevent them before they raise their roaring heads. Her influence puts a damper on whatever threats are out there. Both these cards describe (and belong to) a very stable situation.

So what is the other card? The saboteur, the destabilizing factor or influence, the false friend or the false flag. It’s not what it seems with Six of Wands. Win the battle and lose the war.

Six of Wands and Two of Wands also are both about self-interest. Two of Wands is a legitimate self-interest, a respectable and legal profit (whether fair or not). Six of Wands is the shyster, the shady deal, the pretense of the con who is taking advantage or the bullshitter.

Six of Wands and Strength are the destabilizing factor or influence (Six of Wands) and the stabilizing influence (Strength). Strength is preventing Six of Wands’ mischief. Six of Wands is what only seems to be a victory; Strength is victory without struggle.

Six of Wands      Betrayal and sabotage are common themes of Six of Wands. King Richard has won a battle against some Arabs but the fellow next in line for the throne of England has arranged for the Arabs to kidnap or capture him, and never let him go. A hollow or Pyrrhic victory, winning the battle and losing the war, someone who is a frenemy or an impostor. In application, Six of Wands is the mooches, game players, cheaters, con artists, energy vampires, pretenders and deceivers of your existence. The sneaky self-interested ones who are entitled to operate on someone else’s resources, who trick someone into serving their interests or sucker you into supporting their cause. Pretense and misrepresentation are very much part of Six of Wands. Propaganda, blarney, and b.s.

Six of Wands also belongs to a habit, a vice, or a substance that has control of you, not just another person. It can be self-delusion, not just being misled by someone else. It can represent your own dark side, vice or susceptibility (including susceptibility to ailments). Your demons.

But Six of Wands can also be a good strategy to get the best of, or outsmart, the opposition. It can be an agenda that isn’t bad, given the right Tarot neighbors. It can mean compromise (in either sense of the word). Six of Wands can even be simply playing the role, fitting in, going along with the program, none of which is sneaky. (Hierophant often shows up when Six of Wands is in this groove.)

Two of Wands      He owns the town, you know, solid citizen that he is. He has the world in his hands. Here he stands upon his elegant roof patio, pondering what to do next to get even more profit, even more money, out of the real estate below. Foresight: Up there on the roof, he has a view of the whole picture. That is the place to be … up, looking out … to be in control of your fate.

Two of Wands is you in control of your fate, feeling secure because you are secure, the world in your hands, looking out, planning, the future, planning the future, finances and financial security and long-term financial matters. Two of Wands is stability and financial stability, security and financial security. It is about owning real estate, and about bankers, too – and investments and loans, of course.

Most often, you see it making ‘will’ or another verb that is future tense. It will put another card’s meaning into the future too: ‘He loves you’ may become ‘He will love you.’ And Two of Wands translates ‘the future’ too. And it can mean long term or a long time, or permanent.

Strength      The illustration of Strength is the white robed woman wearing garlands. An infinity sign is over her head like a halo, indicating she is spiritually powerful. The lion wanted to attack her, but she has charmed him so much she has her hands holding his mouth shut and makes him purr while she strokes him.  Her influence is that powerful. So Strength is about winning without the battle, getting the opposition to go along with your program – about handling or finessing a situation. In fact ‘She can handle’ is a frequent translate for Strength.

The battle Strength wins is about handling and overcoming both internal and external challenges, be they enemies, opposition, personal issues, personal demons, habits and addictions … anything at all. Strength can even be about overcoming sickness. The battle can be spiritual combat, spiritual warfare too.

Strength is having such a strong presence that trouble avoids you, you nip opposition in the bud.  An ounce of prevention.  The concept applies to everything:  Muggers avoid people who can handle a fight; bad spirits avoid spiritual adepts; you don’t challenge the stronger candidate – and so on.  Strength can handle it.  Strength overcomes both internal and external threats.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, we say, and today we have a story about someone who sees an opposition forming and acts preemptively to prevent it – someone who can charm the potential frenemy before the clash happens. We also have the story from the would-be opponent’s perspective of losing the battle before it begins and not even knowing it. Sometimes being friendly at just the right time in just the right way saves the fray.

Three of Wands      Three of Wands is arguably the simplest card in the Rider Waite system because it has the most direct connection between the illustration and the meanings. So this is the card to look at first when it appears in your spread; it is an anchor card (my term). You see a person waiting for ships; he is looking at them. So you have ‘coming to’; you have waiting; you have income or something good on the way (The check is in the mail.); and you are looking ahead. ‘When my ship comes in’ is a common saying.

Looking ahead, in Three of Wands, often puts future tense, or future words, onto the surrounding cards. Can’t tell you how often Three of Wands just says ‘will’ or will be.’ It says ‘going to’ – all such phrases.

This is one of the financial cards too: It refers strongly to income, profit, and to financial future (as Two of Wands directly does also). It says ‘going to be profitable’ and it indicates that, yes, you WILL collect the money if that is the question. Sometimes it indicates you can afford something. (It is only a support card for future payments, though.)

Three of Wands also owns: continuing, continuously, continues to, etc. ‘In the process’ belongs to Three of Wands, meaning happening continuously over time.

Judgment      Judgment shows an angel waking the dead, who stand in coffins floating on a sea. (Large bodies of water in Tarot represent consciousness and mass consciousness.)

The resurrection story has several elements which are the core meanings of the Rider Waite Judgment card. A sudden change, a shift of consciousness, recovery or revitalization (‘re-‘ anything), a new life or new phase, a return to a former condition, and suddenly. A sudden dramatic surprise is Judgment’s application most of the time. (Waking the dead is, yes, a dramatic surprise.)

We are leaving out some meanings that do not apply here, like the noise of the horn.

Here are some more of Judgment’s meanings we use today: recover, to come back or return to a place; announcement or telling, the second time; unexpected; it’s here or comes up or it pops up; realize; in a big way; good news.

Wheel of Fortune      Wheel of Fortune is, as its name implies, good luck. It is about the role of coincidence, chance, destiny, karma, or fate in what happens. The meaning of its complex illustration is that spiritual influences, good ones and bad ones, affect events in what we call ‘the real world.’

Some of the mythical creatures are bad spirits, and the ones with books probably refer to the record of our lives that we hear about in various religions.

In the center of the wheel that reminds me of roulette (chance), interspersed, are the four Hebrew letters of the divine name which Jews won’t pronounce out of reverence, and the four letters of what, in more than one myth, means ‘wheel of fortune.’ That word is ‘rota,’ and it means wheel, and it’s the root word of ‘rotate.’ One of those myths is about Apollo, and the ‘rota’ is associated with the end of the earth in that myth. The end of the earth is where the dragons (bad spirits) live. You see that pictured in Moon too: the towers there are in the myth of which I speak.
