Lovers
Love, connection, contact or being in touch, being together or on the same side, or being a couple – and insurance: Those are the meanings of Lovers that we use in today’s spread. Lovers has other meanings, which you can find in detail by typing ‘Lovers TarotVerbatim’ into Google. The meanings for today are obvious: You see a couple, they are together side by side. ‘Insurance’ is an off-label meanings arising from the surveillance of the funky angel: He’s got them covered, is protecting them – and that’s insurance coverage and protection. (I don’t make the meanings up; they happen and are taken note of.)
You could say Lovers is hamstrung today: It has ‘refusing’ or ‘resisting’ to modify itself, on the one hand, and ‘keeping at it’ or ‘keep doing’ on the other.
Four of Cups
He sits there refusing delivery for the fourth time. His arms are crossed; his legs are crossed; his head is averted, looking away. It’s a ‘no.’ So you know Four of Cups is one of the negator cards, is a member of that tribe – but it’s not just a simple negator like Death is; it picks up the context another card makes (or other cards make) and negates that. For example, today we have these off-label uses: not going to ever; will not let myself; in spite of everything; is not provided; doesn’t get through to me; is not his thing; refusing to consider. ‘Holding out for’ and ‘resisting’ are fairly common uses without the contribution of other cards’ meanings.

Eight of Pentacles
Here’s a workingman hammering away, producing pentacles he hangs up on pegs, one after the other, all the same. He does the same thing over and over; it’s his employment. Carpenters work quickly, you know. All these words associated with the illustration belong to Eight of Pentacles. He often brings ‘keep’ to the gerund form (the ‘ing form), as in ‘keep doing,’ or brings ‘keeping’ (meaning continuing) to another card’s word, as in ‘keeping in touch,’ with Lovers being the ‘in touch.’
Eight of Pentacles is the lead card for anything work-related: job, employment, co-worker, worker, workingman, do the work, etc. Eight of Pentacles also owns (along with Magician) ‘doing.’ Eight of Pentacles is the hands-on doing of anything – the ‘line’ instead of ‘staff.’
And Eight of Pentacles also owns any form of ‘one after another,’ with phrases like ‘even one more time.’

Four of Cups won’t, and Eight of Pentacles keeps it up. The remaining card, Lovers, is connecting, contacting, being in touch or being together. So we have some contradictory meanings here. (In real Tarot life, the question or subject, and maybe some known information, will indicate which is the correct choice. We don’t have that here, so we report on the contradictions baldly.)
Of course, when you combine the ‘won’t’ with the ‘over and over,’ you easily get ‘never again.’ Four of Cups is ‘never,’ and I can’t tell you how often Eight of Pentacles translates ‘again.’ These two cards would express similar thoughts with phrases like ‘not every time,’ ‘isn’t continuous,’ and ‘not going steady’ or ‘doesn’t keep at it.’
It’s easy to see ‘don’t love’ in Lovers and Four of Cups, isn’t it? But you’re got Eight of Pentacles working on it – so you may be saying things like ‘Love relationship isn’t work’ and ‘It’s not work when you love what you are doing.’
Lovers and Four of Cups are not connecting (Four of Cups, not; Lovers, connecting), and here’s Eight of Pentacles who keeps trying, so ‘Keeps trying but doesn’t really connect.’
You can also easily see Four of Cups and Eight of Pentacles as not working (Four of Cups, not; Eight of Pentacles, working). That could also express as ‘Don’t have a job’ and even ‘It’s not my job.’
But you can’t count on Four of Cups being a negator all the time. It also ‘holds out for.’ Today that’s ‘Hold out for a job you love.’..
