King of Cups
King of Cups is the quiet type. There’s a spectrum to his meanings. Most often, he is the good guy, the fellow in customer service or with a desk job who is content to be a, shall we say, wage slave. He is the emotional and emotionally available man, the honey of a guy, a gentleman, a sweetheart … good guy. He is the older good guy, and Knight of Cups is the younger. When you see them together in your spread, they are most likely setting a good-guy or sweetheart theme.
King of Cups can also be the snipey type, the resentful, vapid, boring sort of person, or even passive aggressive. He is so famous for being a bureaucrat that this is the main card to stand for government, along with Emperor as a federal government.
Nine of Pentacles
Nine of Pentacles does her own thing, is a private person, and minds her own business literally in both senses of the phrase: she is an entrepreneurial type, a very competent person who often has a niche position that insulates her from politics at work. She is associated with ownership of house or land or business, and she definitely owns her space. Unlike other female cards, she isn’t associated with any particular behavior or attitude toward men: She neutral on that and other subjects – arm’s-length. She is associated with money – is at least self-supporting (with no mooches).
Five of Cups
I think of Five of Cups as the song ‘Yesterday’ and as water under the bridge. See the bridge? Five of Cups is about waste (spilled wine) and mourning, being sorry, regret, and even repentance. It is also missing someone. Yes, it means simply ‘the past’ at times. Five of Cups is one of the narrow in scope Tarot cards … not too many meanings, and they all are in the same vein.
This card can mean a loss of fluid – a leak (as in brake fluid) or body fluids. You don’t want to see it if you ask about surgery.

I drew these cards to demonstrate Open Office’s malfunctions to a tech person who was remotely connected to my computer, and stuck with them because I had already formatted them. You can see the calm fellow relating to the owner’s disappointment, right? King of Cups is the calm fellow; I’m the owner as Nine of Pentacles; and Five of Cups is disappointment.
Applying them to ‘us’ is another matter. This spread is a good example of how you had best not, willy-nilly, apply the ‘other’ meanings to ‘people cards.’ Nine of Pentacles in self-sufficient, competent, mind-your-own business; King of Cups is emotional, a softie. He can be ineffectual, and he can be a ‘serious drinker,’ which is what some alcoholic fun loving old men who knew each other well referred to their habit as. You can’t use ‘independent’ as the word for King of Cups, nor can you use ‘vulnerable’ for Nine of Pentacles. Just not their cup of tea.
So you – making as many sentences as I do here, and making them without a question or the perspective of a questioner, mostly have to treat each of these people cards as people. And there’s no action, only Five of Cups, which is just one kind of feeling: regret, sadness, mourning, etc.
You will encounter spreads that have impasses and problems like this in your work. If you can’t figure a spread out, re-do it. You can save the cards to mull over later, but usually (once you have some Tarot mileage under your belt) if the cards don’t speak to you it’s because you didn’t concentrate on the question well, or because the question is defective in some way.
So we have stories about regrets about past people we miss – mostly.
Field experience led me to finally realize that the combination of King of Cups and Five of Cups refer to alcoholism and/or to giving up liquor. Five of Cups is giving up liquor and also means a hangover. See if that happens for you. I can rely on it, myself, and we use that here. Another application these two cards have toward one another is King of Cups being weak, ineffectual – even passive-aggressive or whiny, and Five of Cups being a loser. Not nice, but they can mean that.
