Three of Pentacles
Interaction with other people is Three of Pentacles: social and business and love relationships – any kind of relationship, meeting, dealing, negotiation, compromise, getting something done together, teamwork. Fool
Fool has many and miscellaneous meanings; it’s the most ambiguous of all cards. Today, in the company of one card about stress and one about relaxation, Fool is mostly using its ‘oh never mind’ category of meanings. Fool doesn’t know, doesn’t care, isn’t (whatever) … heck, fool isn’t even there!
Fool also means both ignore and be oblivious to. It means assume and it means guess.
Fool is also a young spirit, a free spirit. ‘Let up on it already,’ it says today.
The picture shows a young person skipping away on a journey with next to no provisions, with his fluffy white dog companion, who is about to skip off the cliff with him. Although this is ‘God protects fools and drunks’ sometimes, Fool is really about the idea that spiritual people live charmed lives. Don’t try this at home.

Nine of Wands
Nine of Wands guards a turf that is subject to invasion, and feels apprehensive, threatened or intimidated. He has already been wounded, and fears a return of the invaders. So Nine of Wands is about hanging in there in a bad situation. Key words are: nervous, uneasy, anxious, fears, dread, stress, challenge, pressure, have to live with it.
Nine of Wands is defense, and translates ‘defense’ even in legal contexts (like a defense attorney). Feeling defensive, feeling accused, and being accused – either by oneself or by others – belongs to Nine of Wands.
Empress
Really, all you need to know about Empress is that this card is the synthesis of all the fertility goddesses that ever were. So Empress is beautiful, sexy, pregnant, the ideal woman and the slut – and she has a life of ease and luxury. The story in the picture is: She is the beloved of a wealthy man who keeps her in utmost comfort while she is pregnant.
Empress is a resource. Empress is an easygoing personality, is relaxed. Mother Nature, in a way.

Fool is blithe; Nine of Wands has the jitters; Empress is luxuriating: three different approaches. In the middle you have dread and fear. To the left, you have paying no attention. To the right, you have relaxing and enjoying life.
Nine of Wands is nervous, and Empress is a very sexy good-looking gal. So he is nervous around trophy women. Empress is relaxed and Nine of Wands is fearful, tense. You could say Empress is young and pretty; she doesn’t have (Fool) a thing to worry about (Nine of Wands).
Fool is sort of a negator, in that it means to ignore, and to not be. (Not be anything.) Foot says ‘There aren’t any’ too. So Fool and Nine of Wands are ‘Don’t be nervous’ and ‘to have no fear of.’
Fool is a free spirit, and Empress simply enjoys life. This makes stories that contrast with Nine of Wands’ intense uneasiness. ‘How great my life is; I don’t dread a thing,’ they say. Or ‘She is naturally comfortable; she doesn’t stress.’
Empress is pregnant (Fertility goddesses are always pregnant.) so these three cards could be about a problem pregnancy, with a fellow being accused and put on the spot, Nine of Wands, and denying all, Fool – even claiming ‘I wasn’t there,’ which is one of Fool’s meanings. That meaning grows out of Fool’s being the zero. Of course, these same three cards also say ‘She isn’t worried about getting (or being) pregnant.” They could also say – but it would not likely show up this way – ‘She is worried about not being pregnant.’
Empress can be the ideal woman and can be the slut. These three cards could tell the story of a man who sees no reason at all (Fool) to defend or stand up for (Nine of Wands) that trollop (Empress as slut). Nine of Wands defends, and being oblivious, Fool, is ‘seeing no reason.’

Nine of Wands – Today is a study in Nine of Wands’ spectrum. Its basic meaning of waiting for the other shoe to drop’ applies no matter whether it’s just a (even small) feeling, or whether it’s a life-threatening situation – any kind of life-threatening situation, not just combat or confrontation. Watch for Nine of Wands when someone has been diagnosed with a scary (to him/her) ailment, or been warned of a possible hazard.

Nine of Wands applies both as to the apprehension of the wounded soldier who isn’t ready for another battle but also to the bravery of standing up to the attackers. so in the case of the diagnosis, Nine of Wands would represent both the dread of the disease and the determination to fight it.
.
So Nine of Wands is both the ordeal and the expectation of the worst happening.
Strength – A lady dressed for choir practice bends over a lion. Her hands cover his snout. Lion is just standing there. This illustration is Taming the Beast – whether the beast within (traits or habits) or the beast without (a person or situation that is a threat). Strength is about preventing – one of its favorite words. And about overcoming – another favorite word.

Here are six other focal points of the Strength movement:

*Strength exerts influence, usually diplomatically (she is the lion whisperer, after all). Words for that today are: making me or making us or making you; getting us (or them or you) to.

*Strength can handle it – sees it coming before it lands, and cuts off its path, whatever it is. Strength is that look of a person who is comfortable in a fight who repels muggers. Strength can do – got a grip on it, ironing it out.

*In a little different context, usually, Strength is that soothing touch (she touches him, she soothes).

*And yeah, the Strength lady can be pushy, dominant or assertive.

*Strength – and here the card may not refer to a person per se – is the solution, is fixing the situation, preventing the worst from happening.

*And lastly – not that often – Strength is toning it down, putting a damper on it, being quieter or more subtle.

There’s a spiritual and/or esoteric set of meanings to Strength that we are not using today because its neighbor cards are framing a different story than that.
Three of Pentacles – Three of Pentacles is an old friend of yours if you are doing Tarot Email Training. It has these standard meanings, and sticks to them. First of all, Three of Pentacles’ standby word is ‘relationship.’ Next is ‘meeting.’ Then comes ‘deal’ or ‘dealing with.’ Today that includes people pitching in, and a support group.

When you combine the meeting with dealing with, you get negotiating and putting heads together, and those are also fallback meanings for Three of Pentacles.

And today, strangely enough, the way the sentences are constructed, Three of Pentacles four times just gets to be: people, peers, them, we. This card is about what people are doing together, and if other cards also mean that, it just leaves the ‘people’ part to Three of Pentacles.

The way these meanings belong to Three of Pentacles is the story in the picture: The fellow standing on the bench is the builder and/or architect who used that blueprint the monk and nun hold to build the part of the building you are looking at. This meeting is the inspection: When the clients there agree he has done his part, he gets paid because they have a deal, a contract.

On Wednesdays, we share with you the story of a person who has chosen to donate his or her email reading. Today, we dare to post three successive readings and follow the story with you. In October 2017, Tarot says to ‘Hang in there, exactly what you want happens,’ when she asks about six months of love life. That is Reading Number Three here, at the bottom.

In February of this year (2018), at the four-month mark, she asks whether she has done anything to alter the probability. That reading is reassuring her. (She confesses to giving more weight to the cards that indicate something disappointing in her story when she does her own cards – a LOT of us do that, it’s a natural tendency.) And again, that reading (Number Two here), says ‘A whole new chapter, you get what you want unexpectedly: a fellow chasing you with all his energy.’ It too describes a loving relationship.

In today’s reading, she wonders whether the new guy in her life (a returnee) is the one Tarot said those wonderful things about. Tarot answers describing her in a stable loving marital relationship. There’s a spread that again has Nine of Cups (get what you want) but it’s modified by Two of Swords (not). Since this contradicts everything, I take the other card, Ace of Wands, as meaning the sexual part of the relationship is a downside in some way. She interprets that three-card spread, and the one I added to explain things, as saying ‘you have to wait longer.’ Both of which are probably true.

These spreads are a good example of how you often have things to figure out in your Tarot talks even when they are tracking the same story line. Especially timing: Time is by the bucketful, I say, when it comes to Tarot.

Anyway, she has met a new love interest, and the story goes on.

I love your point about the light cards lightening the heavies. In readings I do for myself, I get along the same lines as what you got here, with one huge exception – I zone in on the heavies and, in so doing, am unable to see past them. I really appreciated this insight of yours. Ahh, objectivity:)
I do have one question, which happens to be in perfect keeping with my above mentioned habit. First the cards say, “Love life isn’t going to be suddenly different,” and then proceeds to show a complete, even miraculous, difference. Why? What does this mean?

Easy. Eight of Cups is ‘immediate’ and you asked about six months which isn’t immediate.
People sometimes spaz out and say ‘Tarot said I would get my goodie, and no goodie is here’ and they are all upset. The first sentence makes that point.
You know, I do get appreciation for my sardonic philosophy of life! One commenter said my sarcasm was partly responsible for the credibility she felt I had.

Judgment – Judgment is one of those cards that bridge the physical and the spiritual realms. In its setting here, it applies to physical reality. Judgment is about change, equally applying to the old, to the new, and to the change itself. Judgment is all about change … obviously!

Judgment also applies to going back to the way it was, to reverting. (They used to be alive, and are again.) When Judgment refers to going back to, there are many many words it uses besides the very common ‘again.’ Words that begin in ‘re’ abound. Today it’s: renewal, repeating, recovery, re-do. Another very common phrasing for going back to is just those words, and ‘getting back to.’ Here are today’s: get back with; got back; getting back; bring back to life; old (job) calls you back.

The angel is making a big announcement with his big horn. This part of Judgment’s story brings words like: discovery, epiphany, surprise, loud enough to wake the dead – and also publicity, advertising, press release, news. The ‘discovery’ part of Judgment’s meaning tree includes recognizing and realizing, but other cards usually appear for this, not Judgment.
Eight of Pentacles – Eight of Pentacles is one of those old reliables, one of the anchor cards that you learn to recognize and apply very early in your Tarot practice. Like Magician, it concentrates on doing and making, especially when the story is about an individual.

By far the main meanings of Eight of Pentacles are three: work and job related phrases; repeated action, or the same thing again; keeping at it, being consistent and persistent. And that’s it. He is a carpenter at his work bench, which makes the work meanings. He is doing the same thing and making the same thing over and over, which creates that set of phrases – and there are a few of them. And a carpenter keeps at it, which you know if you have ever been around a professional one hammering away. And of course, he is making some things.
Page of Wands – As a page from feudal days, Page of Wands is the young man who intends to please others as he is starting out in life, so he is associated with a good personality, with youth, with being a good person, and even with looking his best and being well-dressed. So Page of Wands is all about identity. This makes him all kinds of pronouns, and all kinds of types-of-people phrases. And of course, Page of Wands appears for being good-looking, for appearance itself, for image itself.

Today’s phrases for identity are: me, himself, until you are yourself, who I am I am, I am myself, who I really am, I’m a (different) person when – and also these about image: her name, her image, I stand for, as the good guy.

The other primary application of Page of Wands is talk, telling, and being a spokesperson making an announcement. So today we have: notice; you are told about; a message. And you have: the way I talk; told to; talking is what I; talking; he says he; saying; what people are saying – and, of course, ‘talks.’

The words for appearance that we see here today are: my appearance; that good-looking man; good-looking fellow; cute fellow; my good looks.

Page of Wands says ‘physical’ and ‘body’ too. He can say ‘in good shape’ as well as looking good and being in good shape. In medical questions, Page of Wands will appear for the body itself.

At a glance, the strongest statement you see with these three cards is a new person at work, or being the new person at work, or having a new job you are proud of. A lot of work sentences here, and we also have a good-looking fellow suddenly appearing; we have saying (Either Judgment or Page of Wands) the same things over again; we have changing his/her image, or changing appearance, or changing the way you talk. Those are the leading translations that occur right way – to me at least.

Both Judgment and Eight of Pentacles mean ‘again.’ Judgment more means doing it again just another time, and Eight of Pentacles means doing it over and over … so you can say ‘over and over again’ with them.

Both Judgment and Page of Wands mean ‘tell’ or any similar word. When you have two cards that strongly mean the same word or phrase in a three-card spread, you tend to have sentences with similar words, and phrases like ‘report what people are saying.’

We also have Judgment meaning ‘come back’ and Page of Wands being a Prince Charming type, so Prince Charming comes back again, or comes back and talks to you – because of course Page of Wands is Prince Charming and is talk too.

Eight of Pentacles is working on something (anything, really), and Page of Wands is known for being concerned with looks, so ‘working on my appearance.’ Page of Wands can be a foppish dude – antique language. Today we say ‘metrosexual,’ I think.

A lot of work sentences here, and we also have a good-looking fellow suddenly appearing; we have saying the same things over again; we have changing his/her image, or changing appearance, or changing the way you talk. Those are the leading translations that occur right way – to me at least.

Both Judgment and Eight of Pentacles mean both ‘sudden’ and ‘again.’ Judgment more means doing it again just another time, and Eight of Pentacles means doing it over and over … so you can say ‘over and over again’ with them.

Both Judgment and Page of Wands mean ‘tell’ or any similar word. When you have two cards that strongly mean the same word or phrase in a three-card spread, you tend to have sentences with similar words, and phrases like ‘report what people are saying.’

We also have Judgment meaning ‘come back’ and Page of Wands being a Prince Charming type, so Prince Charming comes back again, or comes back and talks to you – because of course Page of Wands is Prince Charming and is talk too.

Eight of Pentacles is working on something (anything, really), and Page of Wands is known for being concerned with looks, so ‘working on my appearance.’ Page of Wands can be a foppish dude – antique language. Today we say ‘metrosexual,’ I think.

Nine of Wands – The pressure of looking over his shoulder for the next attack, still on duty wounded after having survived the earlier one – still defending the position: That’s our Nine of Wands border guard man. The feeling of being pinned down by some threat that consumes your attention: That is Nine of Wands’ emotional tone quite often in your spreads.

Nine of Wands applies whether the battle is wise or not, whether the battle is real or not, whether the battle is physical or not. Think the feeling of being pinned down and under potential fire; it’s a common feeling unless you live on a planet I have not visited yet. Nine of Wands is the guts to hang in there, and is also simply something you are afraid of, or that you have to live with that produces anxieties. Yes, it can just be a headache! Yes, it can just describe a defensive person or a defensive feeling.

Here are today’s words for the just-stress category of Nine of Wands words: stress; nervous about; ill at ease about; you live with [i.e. put up with]; things you worry about; what makes people uncomfortable; what you are worried about; being anxious.

Nine of Wands is the card for scary, for fear, for afraid, for what you are afraid of.

Nine of Wands is of course all about defending one’s turf or one’s position. Here are the words in today’s sentences for that: feel defensive about; the guard; have the guts to hang in there; take a stand here; on my watch; defend that position; you held out; this is a battle.
Eight of Cups – You have to know the story. See the twin moon phases? – that’s about timing, often a month. That’s the end and the beginning, the stop and/or the start: one phase ending and another beginning, like moon phases. The story is that the river and the mountain are in the way of the pilgrim’s path (Pilgrims wore red to indicate they are on that mission, so people would accommodate them.) so the pilgrim goes out of his way, turns off his path. There’s an assumption, a tradition to this card, that Pilgrim will resume course at first opportunity. Therefore, Eight of Cups means a departure or interruption of (whatever), and means ‘avoid’ (the mountain and river) and ‘go out of your way’ but it also can be a story about the resumption of the voyage.

Eight of Cups is dropping out, not doing, ducking out, going A. W. O. L., not showing up, running off the road, not anymore, quit, no longer. These things grow directly out of the illustration of an unexpected departure. Eight of Cups is running off the road too. (Watch for literal road situations in the cards that show a road or mean travel.)

Unexpected and premature events, events that did not happen or were disrupted, belong to Eight of Cups which expends its categories somewhat to include these: running off the road, not showing up, ends prematurely, doesn’t do (‘doesn’t fight’ today), is dismissed, won’t happen, not to, ‘it will blow over,’ escape, avoid.

The ‘unexpected’ part of Eight of Cups also includes things that do happen unexpectedly, such as, today, ‘prompts us onto’ and ‘appears out of nowhere.’

Hermit – Knowing who he is and what he is doing is imperative in order to use the far-flung applications of Hermit in your spreads. The surrounding cards have more effect on Hermit than on most other cards. His story is about this wise old man going to help people who are traveling on a mountain road in winter, offering them an overnight in his warm monastery (because he is a service monk) and some spiritual wisdom and guidance. So Hermit is on the road, is on the path.

Hermit knows, and his slant on ‘knowing,’ which is a huge Rider Waite/Tarot Verbatim category of meanings, is wisdom, is realistic, is truth and facts, is objective and analytical.

Taking a good look; the view in your headlights; looking for your car keys: All of these are in the ‘looking’ classification of Hermit’s meanings. Since Hermit is out looking, Hermit is all about searching, whether it be physical search (including organized search parties) or spiritual search (seeking). Add this search with the facts, the objective and analytical approach – all of which belong to Hermit – and you get investigation. Hermit is the main card for investigator, investigations, and investigating (anything).

The fact that Hermit is an old man brings themes of being old or older, being mature, and even being calm. Hermit is associated with a calm person, and with calming other people, being of comfort to them. Hermit appears as the friend who helps, and as the take-care supportive person (counterpart to Queen of Pentacles in that sense).

So many other meanings to this kind old man in the mountain. Here are some mentioned only once in today’s spreads: night time; doing without sex; a friend; and treatment. Hermit’s clothes designate him as a doctor back in the Middle Ages.
