Page of Pentacles – He’s a young fellow who pays more attention to things because he is a beginner and because he wants to be the person people accept and approve of: Pages are apprentice knights, you know. He is studying that pentacle as a student of life. So you could consider this card an anchor card despite there’s not much to go on here.

The main application of Page of Pentacles is all the variants of looking at (look, look for, look upon, examine – today’s words for him), and all the variants of knowing. Today’s ‘knowing category’ words are: know, think, realize, remember, opinion. The phrases for them today are: realize that; this guy knows how to; young guy thinks; knows how to; remember; all he thinks about is; his opinions; you know; is someone you know; there’s your own opinion; to my way of thinking.

One thing to remember about Page of Pentacles in Tarot Verbatim™: He is often just a pronoun. That’s because Page of Pentacles is an identity card. It translates pronouns by themselves (mainly he, person, I, himself, myself, you, yourself) and it translates pronouns with an auxiliary verb or other verb (I am, he is, I see, I consider myself, yourself, who you are, yourself).

Page of Pentacles, as a young man, can translate phrases like: He’s so young; a cute young guy.

Ace of Wands – Think of Ace of Wands as the herd bull’s drive: sex and domination. Most of its meanings fall into those categories. You see a hand with a board in it, and the board is sprouting, suggesting fertility, and the board resembles a penis (upright of course). Its most frequent translates have to do with ‘must,’ ‘absolutely,’ winning (being Number One), and assertiveness or aggression.

Ace of Wands often says ‘totally’ and ‘absolutely.’ No gray zone, all one way: a victory for one side is a defeat for the other – no tie. It also often says ‘must,’ ‘gotta’ and words that mean impelled or driven to. It also means ‘orders’ and commands.

.

Ace of Wands, like the herd bull, is first and foremost, is Numero Uno, is important. It is also the most and the best (whatever the other cards refer to).

.

And the herd bull is all about procreation and sex as well as dominance. So Ace of Wands in this spread translates: combat, he dominates, to fight, punishment, I had sex, sex, to have sex with.

.

Ace of Wands can refer to a weapon (any weapon, but especially of course a board, which gets called ‘a blunt instrument’ in formal settings like a court of law. So today, Ace of Wands refers to being blunt.

.

Another infrequent application of Ace of Wands is ‘getting your hands on’ or ‘getting ahold of’ because of course a hand grips the board in question.

Hermit – The scene and the story of Hermit spawn a lot of otherwise-unrelated meanings. The story is: This old man is a physician and a monk who goes out at night on the cold mountain road looking for travelers who are in need of food and shelter (back at the monastery, of course), or who could use his wise guidance. So Hermit translates the various virtues one would expect of such a person: sincerity, sobriety, calmness, being helpful, patience, celibacy or ‘being true,’ going to the other person proactively. Hermit indicates ‘he comes to you’ which is handy to know in romance questions.

You see an old man (the wise old man) in the illustration, so Hermit translates all kinds of old-people or old-men words and phrases.

.

Hermit is a physician, healer or doctor by virtue of the clothes he is wearing: That’s what physicians wore back then. Today with Ace of Wands, we have ‘doctor’s orders.’

.

Hermit knows and understands, so he is a member of that Tarot group, but with a twist: His translates emphasize what is believed rather than just the knowing. Words from this spread that are examples of that are: beliefs, the truth, realist, the facts, know everything about.

.

Hermit is searching, is looking for, is out looking, is on the road and on the path. These apply in many ways in your interpretations, and don’t forget the light (the search light, headlight, flashlight, etc.) This is your card for a search party; it can mean ‘looking for.’

.

Hermit is kind, devoted, helpful, so ‘friend’ belongs to this card too.

.

Don’t forget Hermit can appear as not having sex, as well as being celibate or ‘true to.’ We play a cruel trick on Hermit today: Next to Ace of Wands, Hermit is ‘looking for sex.’

Here we are again with two Tarot cards that have some similar meanings on the ends and a stranger between them. Page of Pentacles and Hermit are both looking, knowing, and are both clean-living male persons. Most of our meanings come from them and not from the fairly random offerings Ace of Wands makes to the sentences.

Page of Pentacles sees, and Hermit is the truth, the facts, and the straight honest life. Ace of Wands says ‘You must.’ The main statement these three cards make is made emphatically: I see I’ve got to straighten out my life. So we have seeing the truth, the facts, and doing something about that situation.

.

And how strange that the same three cards say “Out looking to have sex with a cute young guy.” Hermit is out looking, Ace of Wands is sex, and Page of Pentacles is a cute young guy (the student, the apprentice knight.) This is a great example of the fact that, since the cards’ illustrations cause many unrelated phrases, when you mix the cards, you get these mixed phrases. Like I keep saying: The question is at least half the answer; ask the right question to get the right answer. Phrase your question to known Tarot themes, and you ‘call’ the cards that belong to that theme. This practice encourages accurate answers. Page of Pentacles – Page of Pentacles here has a fraternal Tarot twin: Page of Wands. Pages are apprentice knights, so they are young novices who aim to fit into their environment and please the people who are engaged in making knights of them. So Three of Pentacles – doing your part, and engaging in a social commercial exchange – is a card you would expect this Page to combine with.

Page of Pentacles has few and well-defined meanings, which makes him a good anchor card (a card you look to early to determine what the spread is all about). His main meanings are (1) about thinking, feeling, knowing, seeing – also expressed as opinion and idea. (2), Page of Pentacles is an identity card, which brings in simple pronoun meanings. Here are the phrases we use that belong to this identity category of his meanings: I am the one who; you are my type of person; as you identify with; he is his best self; envisioning myself; It’s you who; what you are about; I am your type of person; who I really am.

The third main category of Page of Pentacles main meanings is based on the fact our Page is staring at his pentacle. So, words like look, see, study, pay attention – the ones we use today – and stare, examine ….

Today we use two of Page of Pentacles’ minor vocabulary words. Remember pages want to please people – so he is well-intentioned. ‘He means well.’ Also, once in a while, the fact our page is holding his pentacle interprets as possessing: ‘It’s your very own.’

Three of Pentacles – These people have accomplished their involved and complex purpose: building a part of the cathedral the way the Order envisioned it. That involved people getting paid, and paying those people. The architect has a contract to be the middle man; he did not do the hands-on work. He agreed for a price to find the workers, and to deliver the finished product for the agreed upon price in the agreed upon time. He has finished the project, is is right now demonstrating and explaining to his clients that he did follow the blueprint, and the contract, and has earned his final draw which represents his profit. This meeting is a happy one; it represents a great work done.

Three of Pentacles is all the elements of the story of these people’s meeting, but it isn’t limited to commercial endeavors; it is the main relationship Tarot card, and ‘relationship’ is its default translation. Here are the words from today’s readings about this: I meet you; a relationship, a meeting of minds; members of your circle; meet that person; in your company; to be in a relationship; getting along with these folks; the relationship; people around you; people he deals with; we meet; do his part in this relationship; through the people I deal with; to engage in; we can work it out; we get together for an exchange.

Three of Pentacles often refers to profit, payoff, making money, buying, selling, the market, success together, making a go of it, a deal, dealing, and team. People getting together to get something done are a team.

Hanged Man – Here’s one of those Rider Waite Tarot cards from the think/feel/see/understand Tarot tribe. Hanged Man’s specialty in his tribe is ‘get it’ or ‘capiche.’ And Hanged Man also specializes in paranormal brainwork. This is the card for anything psychic, for envisioning and foreseeing and hunches – anything from a major enlightenment or big vision to that flash of hindsight that makes us say ‘I always knew that’ when some fact about what’s going on around us lights up our head. Hanged Man is mindreading, telepathy, clairvoyance, and ‘a little birdie told me.’

.

And you can see in the picture the head lighting up. And the upside-down feeling you get when your perception is instantly rearranged by a disruptive newcomer splashing into your personal data bank. That’s an intense feeling, and Hanged Man often means ‘intense’ or ‘intense feeling.’

.

But our otherworldly guy hanging from the tree there also has the very common meanings like: feeling, inspire, thrilled, turned on, urge, picturing, the minute you see it, a brilliant idea, the subconscious, subconscious idea or inspiration, realize and recognize. Uh, I forgot to tell you ‘realize’ is Hanged Man’s favorite word.

This illustration is of course what brings all these meanings together for Hanged Man. A number of myths the world around involve the main character hanging himself on a tree for three days to get ‘wisdom’ from the god. As the story goes on, you see that ‘wisdom’ is psychic awareness and psychic powers, magic powers.

Page of Pentacles and Hanged Man each have their main meaning as thought, thinking, feeling, and picturing. So again we are presented with two out of three cards meaning the same thing. Interesting how the odd-man-out card usually appears in the center.

The bridge card is about meeting and getting something done, which immediately blazes ‘ meeting of the minds’ into my head (which Three of Pentacles means all by itself, but Page of Pentacles echoes ‘ mind’). Eight of Wands

You see boards flying through the air, which brings Eight of Wands all its ‘quickly’ and ‘fast’ meanings.

The boards are one above the other, which gives Eight of Wands all sorts of words like: increasingly, more and more, a lot, many, some, all, every one.

You could say all Eight of Wands’ communication meanings – and it is the lead card for them – come through the wands’ travel through the air, for the telephone, texting, radio and other media communications. But Eight of Wands goes farther to include print – documents, books, lists, emails, notes – any talk or writing, or any other form including telepathy.

Eight of Wands makes plurals, so you find it just translating the ‘s’ or ‘es’ or other plural form of a nearby card.

Page of Pentacles

You see a young carefully dressed fellow intently studying the object he holds in his hands. Today we use mostly Page of Pentacles’ think/know/believe/understand meanings, which include ‘opinion’ and such phrases as these: what he thinks, who thinks that way, because of what you know, because I know better, of a mind to, in your head.

Page of Pentacles is an identity card (like Page of Wands) so it often appears just as a pronoun in your spreads. Today all Page of Pentacles uses along that line is ‘the type of person.’

The figure in the picture is taking a good look at that pentacle, and Page of Pentacles means to look.

Four of Cups

No. Says Four of Cups. Let me count the ways he says ‘No.’ This is the plainest-spoken of all Tarot. So Four of Cups is an anchor card: Start here, and get your spread’s idea faster. Here is a list I wrote a while ago of Things Four of Cups Says: Huh-uh, no way, don’t gimme that, ain’t buyin’ it, not going to, won’t admit, pass that one up, not taking advantage of your offer no matter how many times it comes up. I won’t ever be; won’t ever do; won’t ever entertain; won’t let it happen. ‘Get that out of my face.’ Think ‘ten-foot pole department too.

As the hand from the sky offers yet another cup, our protagonist looks down and looks in another direction, sits, and crosses his legs and his arms. He isn’t even saying ‘no.’

Today our Four of Cups boy is paired with the talk of Eight of Wands and the think of Page of Pentacles, begging you to ‘Don’t even think of saying that’ or ‘Don’t say what you think.’ Today, Four of Cups is saying the usual negatives, and these main things: shut up, didn’t say, don’t respond, won’t admit, not listen, none of them are mine, don’t get around to, don’t get involved, without engaging, don’t care, don’t want, pass on it, not about to.

Now Without The Pictures

Thinking (Page of Pentacles). Talking (Eight of Wands). Refusing (Four of Cups). Weaving these three concepts – along with the other meanings these three cards have – into all these stories should have been more difficult, because we don’t have a ‘real’ action card here. But our three Rider Waite Tarot cards unfolded like a rose blossoming.

A negative card in a three-card spread like this can apply to either, and sometimes to both, of the other two cards. Applying it to ‘either’ gives us (1) putting a negative from Four of Cups to any of the meanings of Eight of Wands, and then adding one of Page of Pentacles’ thinking, knowing, believing, remembering meanings to complete the sentence, as well as (2) putting a Four of Cups negative to any of the meanings of Page of Pentacles and adding one of Eight of Wands’ speak/tell/say words, or one of its fast/quickly words, or one of its many-things more-and-more words, or something about written material to complete the sentence. In the case of these three particular cards, that was easier than it usually is.

In fact there are a lot of other worthwhile sentences you could make these three Rider Waite Tarot cards say. It would be a good exercise if you have the time.

Four of Cups is one of the very simplest cards. It is a major negator in Tarot Verbatim™ (a negative modifier).

Page of Pentacles – Page of Pentacles is thinking and feeling, and is identity. It translates singular pronouns (I, me, he, him, myself, himself especially), and it also translates any of those plus any very that means ‘think’ or ‘feel.’ Page of Pentacles can say ‘I consider myself,’ for example. It means opinion, observation, introspection, self-examination, and focus.

Queen of Swords – Queen of Swords is the only negative female card in the Tarot Verbatim system, although other female cards have their bad side here and there. The illustration shows a woman grieving a dead baby. That was very common years ago, as in the Colonial days in America when women had lots of kids so a few would survive. See the baby carved into her chair-throne. That is how Queen of Swords gets her aggrieved, put-upon suffering meanings. She can be missing anyone (or ‘most anything). She can be a widow.

Queen of Swords is the woman who gets no respect, who isn’t getting her due, who is doing without, who is sacrificing. She can be a negative nag, the mama or old lady. She can be a stern and strong woman, an assertive or aggressive woman who does not put up with ‘lip.’ The female drill sergeant or the whining energy vampire. She can be angry and aggrieved, or she can be a victim (real or imagined).

Watch for Queen of Swords to be the older or old woman; it is the only card for that.

Another side of Queen of Swords is militant. Here, she is hard-headed, assertive, strong-willed, and a strong woman, a woman who holds other people up to her own high standards (and is usually disappointed and dissatisfied). She is the stern mama who is ‘hard’ on her kid(s). Mama is mad, or Queen of Swords can just be your mama.

This militant side of Queen of Swords extends all the way to being the only bitch card in the Rider Waite Tarot deck in Tarot Verbatim’s ™ pantheon of personalities. Here, she is critical.

Page of Pentacles – Page of Pentacles is one of the identity cards, similar to Page of Wands. They both mean – literally ‘type of person.’ Page of Pentacles often just translates pronouns, especially ‘he’ or ‘him,’ ‘I’ or ‘me’ and pronouns ending in ‘self.’ It also translates ‘self.’

Page of Pentacles is is one of the ‘good guy’ cards in Rider Waite. It means ‘person’ as well as ‘guy’ but is usually male gender.

Page of Pentacles often translates ‘I see,’ ‘I am looking at,’ or just ‘looking at’ or ‘see,’ and ‘I think.’ That’s because he is staring at that pentacle, studying it. Figuring things out is similar to think, so that belongs to our Page too.

Two of Wands – Two of Wands would make a good ‘guide card’ for the Tarot lessons I am writing: It has well-defined meanings that relate easily to any of the cards. Most of its meanings relate to future time, which comes about because our property-owning mogul in the picture is planning what to do with his holdings below his castle roof he stands upon … with the world in his hands. (Remember, Two of Wands owns ‘plan’ and its synonyms and forms.

Words that belong to Two of Wands’ future category fall into two main categories: tenses that are future, and any word that refers to ‘future’ or to the future. Here, for instance, are some of these today: I’m going to be, going to get, is going to be, going to, always, long term, the future, it’s his plan for the future, plans to, for-sure future, fore- (as part of ‘foresight’).

The real estate mogul brings financial terms like: financial future, financial plan, investment, financial security, bottom line, profit, budget, pension. This is one of the real estate cards, and it can be a mortgage broker, a banker, financial adviser, etc.

Page of Pentacles – You see a young man starting out in life as a page, an apprentice, studying something. He is clean and neatly dressed. Page of Pentacles is a very simple card, but not really an anchor card because it means so few things.

First, Page of Pentacles is an identity card so it will translate pronouns, especially: he, his, him, himself, I, you. Next, be aware that these identity cards can include verbs as a package meanings. Page of Pentacles often includes forms of these verbs: think, feel, look, see, is, occurs to, pays attention, and of course realize. A lot of Rider Waite cards in Tarot Verbatim™ translate ‘realize.’ Page of Pentacles will say synonyms of ‘think,’ words like: consider, ponder.

To make it very clear, today Page of Pentacles combines these pronouns and verbs into its one meaning-package: I am, I am myself, he has, you realize, he is, occurs to him, what you are thinking, myself, I know how to, you feel, he thinks, you know, he is thinking.

Page of Pentacles also refers to the idea, the opinion, what is thought, what (he/she/it) knows.

Judgment – Judgment has a lot of words and phrases in its dictionary, but ‘most all of them derive from the change the newly-alive-again people experience in the picture. Another main category – much smaller in number – derives from the word ‘judgment’ in a legal context or in the context of ‘pass judgment’ or even, rarely, ‘judgmental.’

The change category brings a ton of words that begin in ‘re-’ and mean a second time. The same change category brings phrases about ‘new’ and the first time. The change refers both to changes a person deliberately brings about and changes that are a surprise from the environment. Very commonly ‘again’ and ‘another’ belong to Judgment in this way. Watch for ‘repeat’ and ‘reminder.’

The ‘new’ category is especially about a new life, a new phase, and even a new perspective or idea – especially an epiphany, a sudden realization that is enlightening. So Judgment will mean eureka realization and enlightenment, as Hanged Man will. It translates ‘occur’ in this way too. Odd words too belong here: Pops up, or springs upon.

The sudden awakening by the noise of the horn that is loud enough to awaken the dead also gives rise to a group of meanings for Judgment. Sudden. Surprise. Instantly. In a flash. Alarm. Any loud noise including music. Words like that.

.

The angel with the horn is making a big announcement too. So Judgment means news, announcement, publicity, and all the common words that belong in the speak/tell/say Tarot clan.

Strength – Strength refers to strength of character, the kind of maturity that allows a person to see something coming and stop it before it gets to you. Nip it in the bud, we call that. The story in the picture is that the lady is so spiritually adept (evidenced by the white robe, the flowers she wears, the eternity halo, and the fact she is petting the predator and standing by its side) that the would-be attacker or disrupter is rendered harmless as she handles it and the horse it rode in on. Think ‘lion whisperer.’ Strength is about being ‘on top of things,’ ‘having a grip on it,’ being in control of the situation.

.

Strength is a problem being prevented, a solution finessed. It is about opposition but isn’t about combat at all. Strength is making friends of an enemy, or is a negotiated settlement due to (of course) strength. So these words (prevent, problem solved, finesse, quashing opposition) are Strength’s. ‘Overcome’ is one of Strength’s favorite words. ‘Victory’ happens here too. Note that ‘overcome’ is about internal issues as well as environment: Strength, as a spiritual adept, has overcome his/her demons.

Note that strength prevents; Strength stops them from doing that; Strength doesn’t let (whatever), Strength is not going to allow; and Strength prevents opposition – not just overcomes opposition.

Influence is the reason for the happy outcome. ‘Her influence’ is a common phrase for Strength. In real Tarot practice, this influence of course isn’t limited to female entities.

Watch for the fact that the lady in the illustration has her hands on the predator, the problem – specifically has her hands on the snout and jaw (top and bottom) – brings Strength words that involve: hands-on; handle; laid hands on; shut (him/it) up; and even ‘pet’ and ‘turned (him) every way but loose,’ which applies to sexually assertive dames as well.

Strength makes; Strength gets the best of; Strength forces. That includes ‘making myself’ and ‘making herself.’ That brings up the pushy dame who makes people (whatever). That includes ‘getting the best of (him)’ and even ‘she’s got me.’

This is Tarot Verbatim’s modified Celtic Cross spread, originally designed to, in six spreads, use each of 78 cards. When I did this, I noticed ‘3 sentences,’ with the last being the three-card outcome. The second, of course is the three cards below that, which Tarot spreads refer to as ‘the tower’ because this spread originally sprang from Celtic outdoor structures which had meaning for those people. The rest of the cards, the beginning part, is referred to as ‘the cross’ because, again, of outdoor structures.

Celtic Cross spreads, as you can see, have positions that cards’ meanings apply to. This is the standard way most Tarot readers read Tarot. (They pay less attention to the meanings cards have in common than Tarot Verbatim™ does.)

.

These positions suggest reading a clump of the cards together (Self-Cover-Cross, or as I think of it, Self-Situation-Problem is the first clump. Then you do the ‘arms of the cross, which are the horizontal and vertical pairs of ‘the cross.’

.

The question here is from the executor of a murdered man’s estate. Things are a mess, and Client has been threatened a lot, and had a lot of theft. Client’s belief is that the deceased may be helping out with the situation, which is really about Deceased’s business and life rather than Client’s. (Yes, I have permission to post this to you.)

Nine of Cups – He is an anchor card because his meanings are few, well-defined, and relate to other cards comfortably. Here’s this chubby fella with a big ol’ grin on his face because he drank and ate it all: The empties are behind him.

So Nine of Cups has that satisfied, safunsified, fulfilled feeling, and it is about pleasure and enjoying. “I like it like that,” “Things are going my way.”

Nine of Cups supports a wealth theme. Today it refers to ‘well paid.’ But it is support; it seldom appears by itself to mean an individual is wealthy, just that he or she (or they or we) is feeling good and enjoying life, and has plenty.

Page of Pentacles – A young fellow stares intently at what he holds before his face. Page of Pentacles is an identity card; it means pronouns, and it means a person, or ‘a person who.’ The other main meaning for him is to think, to believe, to have an opinion, to know, and ‘to feel that.’ Its emphasis is on the individual and on thinking. That includes being a student of something and observing, seeing, learning about it.

Eight of Pentacles – Here’s a carpenter at his workplace doing what carpenters do: hammering. He is making identical items over and over, persistently.

Eight of Pentacles is an anchor card because its meanings are few and are well-focused, and they easily relate to other cards’ meanings. Anchor cards are worth their weight in gold because they give you clarity in several ways. First, they give you an immediate heads-up as to what your spread may be about, and you see what other cards’ meanings most likely are, and you save a lot of time that way.

The first meaning for Eight of Pentacles is anything to do with job, work, employment, task, and what a person does for a living. Next, Eight of Pentacles means all forms of the verb ‘do.’ Eight of Pentacles is the person who does the hands-on part of an enterprise, for example. Page of Pentacles – You see a young man dressed well concentrating and focusing on something. He is a page, and pages are apprentices – apprentice knights of course. Page of Pentacles is a fine young man, like three out of four of the other pages in Tarot. He is a good clean person, usually a young single man.

So he is focusing on who he is and how he fits into the situation he finds himself in. So the main meanings (almost the only meanings) of Page of Pentacles are about thinking, knowing, feeling, believing, and focusing – one category.

The other category is identity, self, who a person is. Here you find simple phrases like: I am, you are, he/she/it is, one of those people, the type of person that, be yourself, what your interest (or his or her or even their) interest is. You often find this Page of Pentacles card interpreting a simple combination of pronoun and verb (often an auxiliary verb. That’s the ‘I am’ examples given earlier here.

Ten of Cups – Ten of Cups is ‘We’re all one big happy family here.’ All the good people. All the marriage cards expand to mean groups of people, organizations, and positive relationships of all sorts in Tarot Verbatim™.

Ten of Cups also is a card-carrying member of the prosperity Tarot clan. It associates happy respectable people with people who live in that fine home that’s pictured.

Today Ten of Cups is not a house or a neighborhood, but those concepts are solidly in its dictionary. Today’s spread says ‘Looking for my ideal house’ and similar sentences, but those are sentences I discarded when I was writing this.

Wheel of Fortune – Coincidence is the core concept for Wheel of Fortune. It represents the idea that both good and bad spiritual forces affect events in our lives. A frequent meaning for this Tarot card is: It happens.

The Wheel of Fortune is a concept in the Apollo myth, associated with bad spirits and the Left-hand Path which leads to the precipice at the edge of the flat earth which is the habitat of those dragons and evil spirits. Where hell is. This was a specific locale on maps in the Hellenic (Greek and Roman) culture. The Moon card shows this road, the Left-hand Path that is the road to hell, and its meaning revolves around this concept.

The Greek word for this Wheel is ‘Rota,’ and you can see those letters alternating with the four Hebrew letters that mean Jehovah or Yahweh in English. ‘Rota’ is the root word for ‘rotate’ in English.

.

Okay. But the emphasis in Wheel of Fortune, as it actually functions on your Tarot table, is about luck – always good luck unless another card overcomes the message. Although you have the various funky-looking bad spirits all over Wheel of Fortune, God’s name is there too.

.

Wheel of Fortune looks like a roulette wheel, and the card is heavily about gambling, taking a chance, getting a chance, being lucky or fortunate, long shots that pay off big, things happening for the best, and the words ‘wonderful’ and ‘miracle.’ ‘Opportunity’ is also a frequent favorite word of Wheel of Fortune. Your big chance, your lucky break, lucking out, and Lady Luck herself.

A similar concept is destiny and fate. These words also belong to Wheel of Fortune.

Often, Wheel of Fortune translates ‘best’ in various ways. Today we have: what’s best, for the good of all, best, best ever, your best, the ideal, best interest and ‘the greatest.’
