Ten of Cups

Ten of Cups shows the stereotype of ‘the good (suburban) life’ and pictures the kind of respectability money can buy. Like Ace of Pentacles, it links having money with being good. Here you have the dream home on some acres with a rainbow over it, a boy-and-girl child dancing with one another, a couple embracing with arms lifted to heaven.

 

 

 

 

 

Three of Wands

Three of Wands is that couple’s continuing prosperity, the certainty of their good future. Three of Wands dispenses future tense to all it touches, means income, means ‘continuing,’ and shows someone waiting for his ship (that he is looking at) to come in – so Three of Wands is also ‘waiting.’

 

 

 

 

 

Hierophant

Hierophant also is about the respectable end of things, things as they should be, and fitting in or conforming. You can think of Hierophant as normalcy bias. It often translates: right, should, ought to, proper, and normal. It means okay, acceptable, and up to standards too. It has much more moral overtone than Ten of Cups, since it’s churchy – the illustration shows the pope doing a ceremony. Emphasis in Hierophant is behaving, conforming, things the way they should be, protocol and curriculum type things: the official reality, the way things are. Things the way they should be includes safety. (If you ask whether something awful will happen, Hierophant says ‘no,’ that things are okay.)

Hierophant is also labels and names – which comes from its ‘official’ branch of meanings. Also coming from the ‘official’ branch of meanings is ‘entitled,’ which is really ‘rightfully belonging to.’

Three of Wands with Hierophant says there’s good times ahead. When you hitch them up to Ten of Cups, you get ‘Everybody’s going to be all right’ because Ten of Cups is everybody.

 

 

Now Without The Pictures

Ten of Cups and Hierophant mean a lot of the same things, and are in the same groove. Ten of Cups is normal or good people with the same mindset, the human group from couple to international in scope, who are respectable and not sinister. (So Ten of Cups would represent the Moral Majority or a group of animal rescuers, and it’s Ten of Pentacles that would represent the mob or any bunch of troublemakers.) Ten of Cups is ‘the folks’ and it means home, house and marriage – see the illustration.

Hierophant shares all the respectability of Ten of Cups, but its emphasis is on the rules, on conforming to protocol, going through channels, what you are entitled to, fitting in and being acceptable. Hierophant is also the name, the title, the paper that certifies – the right-of-way, you could think of it as. Hierophant is also about ‘face,’ but not so much today.

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING;

.……………….…….. Readers dread a conglomeration of ‘court cards’ in a spread. You trip over them: WHO are all these people? Most of the time, you figure you weren’t concentrating when you thought of your question, and you just pick them up and ask again. This spread is an example of what you can do with nothing but court cards. You have a little leeway, a little license, when this happens, to phrase things. Here we have the clean cut well spoken young handsome Prince Charming; the sweet kind loyal woman who understands and admires her man, and listens; the question mark card which also means silly, goofball, strange, humor, and not fitting in.

As you can see, we have human stereotypes, and we have some actions – mainly speaking and listening. From these ingredients come our stew of meanings.

Note that Queen of Cups knows her man, figures him out, knows who he is; and Page of Wands is who he is – identity. These meanings bump into each other. Note that both Knight of Wands and Queen of Cups are blond, and we have Page of Cups that means ‘dumb,’ so either one of these parties to our story is a ‘dumb blond.’ Things like this puzzle you if you don’t see it coming.

Page of Wands………..Page of Wands means to speak, to take a stand or position, to be young, to be handsome, to be respectable and a winner (‘fair-haired boy’). Usually being blond isn’t part of Page of Wands’ package. Today is different because of the scenario.

Queen of Cups…………Queen of Cups’ stereotype would be the Bible Belt young gal who thinks sex is a sin unless you’re in love. The naif. Queen of Cups is the good woman, the loyal wife, the woman who understands her man (or has figured him out, or is figuring him out). Queen of Cups admires her man. She likes her man.  (She even translates ‘she likes’ once in a while.  She thinks, she listens, she ponders, she dreams, she considers. It’s a card with few meanings and a narrow scope. It’s easy to see her as ‘blond,’ as the flood snakes around her chair … and she stares dreamily at what may be an urn.

Queen of Cups translates ‘thinks’ a LOT, and understands, and wonders.

Page of Cups………..Page of Cups is unabashedly overtly a goofball, a misfit, an odd fellow. He carries a fish in a cup, is dressed in women’s clothes, and has that simpleton expression. This card means any such word, and this card instructs you as the reader to put the sentence into question form. King of Swords is the manly man, the disciplined authoritative man, the grown up man, the policeman or other such man’s-man occupation. I call him John Wayne, and observe this is who most (American) men want to be … when they grow up.

Queen of Cups is the sweet-kind-loyal perfect wife and girl friend, the dumb blond, the woman who understands and loves her man, etc. Sally Struthers in All in the Family, for example. (She has other meanings – later.)

Page of Cups is perfect as the other card in this spread family. He says ‘Duh’ and he means the silly side of things. He asks the question.

…………………………..Queen of Cups is that sweet gal who loves her man, understands her man, stands by her man. She is always thinking, but may be thinking about … something she thinks about. That do-dad she is staring at, for instance. She has faith, she believes, and her world is small and … we hope … cozy.

………………………….. King of Swords is that rigid sort of fellow who has to have some force, some power to himself, even if he is king of the pool hall, you know? He is the man every American man wants to be, the John Wayne. Men who act like this, other men consider leaders, or at lest the leader of the pack. Queen of Cups…….. mainly is a well-meaning nice person who is loyal to her man especially, and believes all the things she thinks she is supposed to believe – definitely a product of her culture, whatever the culture is. You see her staring at a funky artifact as a flood surrounds her throne. Water indicates an emotional person or situation. He tends to rule something, especially his home, but maybe there’s a sports bar or a gym where ‘everybody knows him.’ He minds his image and goes out of his way to avoid scandal even if he is some kind of crook.

Page of Cups …………. Page of Cups is one of the ‘Duh’ cards. It makes your sentence a question very often; it means the word or verb ‘question.’ Page of Cups means weird, puzzle (like Seven of Pentacles), wonder, stupid, awkward or feeling awkward, make a fool of oneself, to not know, humor, even a comedian. Page of Cups can mean inappropriately dressed, since this fellow is wearing women’s clothes, and for that reason can represent a gay person of either gender, a cross-dresser or maybe a transsexual. Again there are three Rider Waite Tarot cards about thinking, but this time right in the middle we have action. Yay. You could say ‘Doubt, dream, focus’ (respectively Page of Cups and Queen of Cups and Knight of Pentacles) with ‘Get it done’ amidst them all.

Queen of Cups is the dreamy blond gal who believes – who specifically believes in her man and is the loyal wife or girl friend. She represents Eric Hoffer’s ‘believer,’ if you have read that wonderful book. She is figuring things out. Knight of Pentacles is the very physical guy with one idea on his mind – often his self interest. He is stubborn and he may be obsessed. Page of Cups is a duh card. It is a silly idea or a silly person.

 

In the middle what have we got? – The masterful, successful, Type A driven individual. He gets the project done. And he pairs up with the ‘driven’ concept in Knight of Pentacles.

 

 

And Queen of Cups and Page of Cups pair up along the lines of the impractical thinking each characterizes. She is dreaming, pondering and wondering. He is wondering and asking a question and has some silly aspect to his subject rather often. He can be high.

 

 

Queen of Cups and Knight of Pentacles pair up along the lines of opinion. This is where we get all the ‘he thinks, she thinks’ of our sentences. Each is focusing, thinking, has a strong feeling or opinion.

 

So it is easy to see that our stories are going to contrast getting an accomplishmentdone with doubting and even silliness.

Queen of Cups     dreams on. She has her opinions and they are largely based on emotions and on her end of the world. Stereotypically she is culture bound and may be sheltered – think the blond southern chic in the Bible belt. She thinks, feels and believes – specifically believes in her man – and is the loyal wife or girl friend. The water around her throne and the way she is engrossed in some funky artifact illustrate the type of person this Rider Waite Tarot card represents.

 

 

 

Chariot    And here comes her champion, her polar opposite soulmate. Chariot is theCan Do man. He is a winner if not the winner. Chariot is ambitious and successful. You could call him driven even … what with the vehicle under his masterful control. This is the fella your mama wants you to marry. This Rider Waite Tarot concept depicted here is about using factors that are against your success for it – about tacking against the wind. The sphinx that will go only right is on the left side, and vice versa, so that together they have no choice but to go forward under his direction. We need this guy.

 

 

Knight of Pentacles     has his and his horse’s feet planted firmly on the ground and is determined, concentrating, and focusing on one thing. “He aims” is often the phrase both he and Chariot call up. He too is manly. Macho. A thug sometimes. He also calls up phrases about opinion and beliefs.

 

 

Page of Cups     wonders, is silly, incompetent, stupid-looking, inadequate, dumb and unsure of himself. He represents an awkward feeling, inappropriateness of any sort, the word ‘strange.’ He especially represents a question. Today he calls up: unlikely, odd idea, jerk, and snockered. Since he is dressed in women’s clothing, he can represent a gay male or a cross dresser. He can also be mentally challenged. Watch for him to indicate humor, too.
