Six of Wands
Six of Wands tells the story of how King Richard lost his throne and crown to the fellow who arranged to have him abducted by some retreating Arabs in a battle he won. Six of Wands is about sneaky self-interest, agenda, disloyalty, being out to get someone, strategy, pretense (an act), outwitting, and going along with the program.
Tarot meanings arise from any element of the card’s story, so Six of Wands covers both the misled and the misleader. It emphasizes motive, self-interest particularly. It also emphasizes playing the role, whether that is in the sense of living up to what is expected of you, or whether that is in the sense of putting on an act to take advantage of someone or something.
Judgment
The angel with his horn wakes up dead people to a new life suddenly on Judgment Day, obviously a change. Several elements of this scene make quite a few otherwise-unrelated meanings. Elsewhere on this site (Google ‘Judgment Tarot Verbatim’) are comprehensive reports of Judgment’s phrases and words. Today, we largely use some of the ‘new’ meanings, the ‘change’ meaning, the ‘again’ meaning, the ‘suddenly’ meaning, and the ‘goes back to’ meaning.
The ‘new’ meaning is the new life the ex-corpses have – which is the ‘change.’ ‘Again’ is being alive again, which of course is a ‘return, going back to’ life again. ‘Suddenly’ speaks for itself. The angel is also making ‘a big announcement,’ which brings Judgment into the theme of speak/say/tell. We use ‘tell’ here. These are the very basic Judgment meanings.
Queen of Cups
Water rushes around her chair as she blithely contemplates some urn. This identifies one type Queen of Cups is. Queen of Cups represents two main types of women. First is the stereotypical gullible sentimental sweet-natured loyal wife, the believer, the naif (naïve) the dreamer, the Woman Who Understands, especially understands her guy. Seven of Wands
We interrupt our program to present Seven of Wands, who does that best. Seven of Wands can be the mouthy mooch, and Seven of Wands can be fighting for what’s yours, and Seven of Wands can be ‘most any insistence or denial. Seven of Wands is overt, is in your face, is often loud. Think of a teenager (or a drunk) who demands the car keys. Think of the intruder having a fit. Even the bill collector. Think of anything unpleasant that catches you by surprise, that you are unprepared for, that catches you off-guard.
The scene you are looking at that represents these meanings is a fellow rousted from bed in his nightshirt, with only one boot on – rousted by invading and trespassing neighbors who mean him harm, mean to take what is his. He is expected to win against overwhelming odds. That expectation is sometimes the meaning of Seven of Wands in your layout.
Ten of Cups
Ten of Cups is ‘one big happy family.’ It stands for a group of people who have something in common – anything, any group – and it stands for group mind. Specifically, this is good people, an okay bunch of people. Like two other group cards (Four of Wands and Ten of Pentacles), Ten of Cups is a marriage card. This is the happy prosperous American-dream type couple with the ideal boy-and-girl kids. This is the way we are supposed to be, and there’s an undertone to Ten of Cups about conforming. Think ‘The Moral Majority’ of a few years ago there. Ten of Cups also means house, home, neighborhood, and belonging.
Six of Wands
Six of Wands is at it again: interference in your affairs. Lots of possibilities as to what form or what kind of influence is being exerted. Six of Wands is to act as if, and that pretense applies in various ways. One of them is ‘to act as if this isn’t really happening.’ Six of Wands is also the frenemy, the out-for-myself strategist. It’s the sales pitch, seduction, advertising, propaganda, ‘leading me on,’ and it’s the hypocrisy of acting like a decent person.
When it isn’t being secret obstruction, Six of Wands is fitting in, putting the best face on, playing your expected role, going along with the program, and being influenced by your fellows. That influence can be to behave, or to misbehave, depending on what the group’s mores is. A gang of juveniles, for example, will have each kid’s parents claiming those other bad kids led their kid astray.) A church group will have the members denying whatever they are up to, to look good and fit in.
So how does this picture mean all that, anyway? You have to know the story. The horse looking into the camera tips an observant person off to the fact that something is not what it seems in the victory the folks are celebrating. Six of Wands is the story of the abduction of King Richard III of England. He won a battle with invading Arabs, and chased the retreating troops. It was a trap instigated by his buddy the second in line to the throne. So Six of Wands depicts when you’re winning and everything is looking good, but something is going on that you don’t know about behind the scene of your victory.

All three of these Rider Waite Tarot cards involve social pressure. Seven of Wands is in-your-face pressure; Six of Wands is more subtle influence to serve another’s interest; Ten of Cups is the good people everybody wants to consider himself one of.
Seven of Wands and Six of Wands together get your attention: Six of Wands is always quietly up to something, even if it’s only pretending to fit in and putting the best face on. Six of Wands is pretending to go along with them: Six of Wands is covert (hidden, undeclared) opposition to a group’s purpose. It’s also going along with the group’s program despite reservations. And it’s also being influenced against your will (propaganda, lying, seduction, sales pressure, etc.).
Seven of Wands is overt (in-your-face) disruption or overt opposition – pushing people around, say. Seven of Wands is also the defense to this disruption or opposition. You can think of Seven of Wands as ‘Gimme the car keys, and, no, I ain’t fillin’ the tank’ or as ‘I’m mad as hell and won’t take that anymore.’ Mooch confronts host with demands, or host has had enough and rebels: both sides of that story.
Seven of Wands represents both the offensive demands, and the defense to that kind of behavior. How does this come about? – well, the story is that neighbors banded together to take this man’s land, and he is putting up a fight. So Seven of Wands is about both sides of that sort of scene. Think of Seven of Wands, in
Keep in mind that in your spread these two cards can oppose one another, in which case you have something like ‘I’m not letting (anything) undermine our family values,’ with Ten of Cups being the family values. That, of course, is the defense in Seven of Wands to the influence in Six of Wands.
With Ten of Cups, our story can easily be political, because Ten of Cups is a community (any level, any size community). For example, Seven of Wands is a protest (in-your-face opposition) by disadvantaged people who feel taken advantage of (Six of Wands). Ten of Cups makes that a public protest.
The very same cards represent a couple in a happy love relationship or marriage (Ten of Cups), who aren’t about to let anyone interfere with (Seven of Wands as the defense) or undermine (Six of Wands) their relationship (Ten of Cups). Strangely, Six of Wands and Ten of Cups both involve role-playing, fitting in.
So the interplay between Seven and Wands and Six of Wands is complicated, very complex.
Ten of Cups in our spread today is the inert bystander, the people who are acted upon. It represents the group. Ten of Cups can be ‘us’ and can be ‘everybody’ and can be the public. In this spread, Ten of Cups exerts social pressure (Six of Wands) on people who resist its influence (Seven of Wands).

Be careful what you wish for – this is the story of King Richard III’s victory over some invading Arabs, but the victory was a setup to get him captured and forever away from his throne. The downside of a win. You got the job but now you’re stuck with something. Six of Wands also means, plain and simple, ‘to pretend’ and ‘to influence’ or ‘to have an influence.’ For example, ‘Her influence changes my ways,’ and ‘She only pretends to be hard to get.’

Knight of Pentacles
You see a very sturdy guy staring down that pentacle. Mr. Knight of Pentacles represents two main stereotypes: The Type A driven man who focuses his high energy level on his main interest, and/or his own self interest, who has ‘one thing on his mind’; and the muscled strongman, the tough guy who is stubborn, opinionated, and maybe a rude punk. Knight of Pentacles can be the self-employed hands-on working man, the auto repair guy, the plumber – combining the drive and self-interest with the physical focus of our Knight of Pentacles.
Phrases Knight of Pentacles makes are mainly about that ‘one thing’ and ‘mind made up’ characteristic of our sturdy subject. Phrases like ‘serving my own interest’ and ‘minding my own business’ are all his. Another main source of Knight of Pentacles phases is our Guy’s focus: He decides; he aims to.
Also, Knight of Pentacles belongs to the theme of looking and watching, with particular focus on ‘looking out for’ and ‘being on the lookout.’ Hermit means some of this from the opposite standpoint.
Lastly, Mr. Muscles is a Knight of Pentacles fellow, or any man with a lot of energy.
Six of Swords
You see a woman and child heading on out, huddled in an open paddle-boat at dusk or dawn, sans belongings. The man paddling the boat is traditionally a friend who helps, which sometimes makes a story of being helped or rescued by a friend. You could title this paining ‘There will be better days.’ Its focus is on heading out of a bad time or place, and heading for better times ahead. ‘Avoid’ is a basic word for Six of Swords.
Today we use Six of Swords’ mainstream meanings of leaving and avoiding. We also use its ‘not anymore,’ ‘isn’t being anymore,’ and ‘not going to’ categories.
Six of Wands
Six of Wands alerts you to other people’s motives, as well as to your own. Ask yourself whether you are letting yourself go along with some influence that isn’t really yours (not in your interest, not your type of thing, etc.). Look around for a person who isn’t what he or she (or they, too) really seems to be, or who is attaching to you as a mooch. Or maybe whether that’s you on the horse leading others down a counterproductive path.
So why does Tarot Verbatim™ use Six of Wands this way? – because that’s King Richard’s Pyrrhic victory you see in the illustration: the battle in which he pursued the retreating Arabs who invaded his kingdom … to his doom. It was a trap, and he spent the rest of his life over there in Arabia as a war captive. So THAT is why Six of Wands tells you appearances are deceiving.
Today Six of Wands emphasizes following the herd, being on the bandwagon with those other guys, behaving like everyone else on the beaten path, and going with the way you are programmed, or going with the program. Today it’s about being taken advantage of or being misled, about an assumption you may have that is counterproductive (that will cost you).
Six of Wands is also about playing the game, about fitting into a role, and even about pretending to be someone you are not – even about sleazing out, which is ‘sleaze’ for Six of Wands and ‘out’ for Six of Swords.
Keep in mind that this card’s concept of ‘going along with others’ can be about sensible conforming, about fitting into what is expected of you where there’s a fair return for the behavior.

n armed man speeds, weapon at the ready, his horse giving it all he’s got. Change in a hurry is afoot, and this action is intense and brief – acute, not chronic. This much is consistently true of Knight of Swords.
It’s the direction of the action that is in question. Knight of Swords can be: running from or exiting or leaving, can be about ‘No more!’ and ‘I’m outta here’ and ‘on the run’ or ‘on the fly.’ Knight of Swords can be: going back or going back in a hurry. Knight of Swords can be pursuing, as the picture shows. Knight of Swords can be changing direction, and can be about a change taking place – ‘life-changing,’ for instance. And Knight of Swords can be about the fast and brief part: in a hurry, ever-so-brief, so it didn’t last, back in a hurry, strikes.
Knight of Swords joins the ‘again’ clan and the ‘another’ clan too, because of the ‘going back to’ and the ‘return’ meanings.
Once in a while, when the rest of your reading’s sentence echoes and establishes the ‘outta here’ meaning of Knight of Swords, the literal words for him will be just a negative. Here’s the first example of that rare occasion: “Are not connecting up with some little lover who has a use for you.” Lover is the connecting up and the ‘some little lover.’ Six of Wands is ‘who has a use for you.’ Knight of Swords means to avoid or run from, but the simple ‘are not’ is enough to say that. What holds Six of Wands’ many phrases together is: Things are not as they seem, are misleading; there’s some self-interest, game, agenda, pretense, or even double-crossing deceit to the scene. Six of Wands is one of the cards about a mooch or person who is using others for his or her benefit. Six of Wands is also being under the influence of an assumption that leads to a mistake.
The picture is about the betrayal of an English king, by the next in line to the throne (There’s your self-interest, your agenda, your deceit.) to the Arabs he was fighting. He was led to chase retreating combatants, and it was a trap to have him captured in battle and kept captive by the Arabs for life. So things were definitely not as they seemed, and the environment was definitely not to be trusted.
Lovers
Adam and Eve here, with their respective Garden of Eden trees (you see them again in Devil), and their supervising angel, a volcano in the distance between them. They are a couple and the title of this card is Lovers, so this is the card for all kinds of love affairs, and for intervention or interference from ‘higher ups.’
Besides all the love stuff, Lovers applies as connection and protection (even insurance protection, in real Tarot practice). It especially applies as partnership types of connection, whether in business or social life. The phrases ‘partner up’ and therefore ‘pair up’ belong to Lovers.
The connection meaning, plus the presence of the angel, brings ‘connection to God’ to Lovers. (And that can be modified by surrounding cards.)

Moments of change are pictured here. Knight of Swords means both to go ahead with something and to get out of something, usually quickly. Lovers is connecting with it, even partnering with it. Six of Wands is both going along with it and mistrusting it. So we picture that moment of awakening to a suspicion that all is not what it seems.
When you have a negative card in one of these three-card spreads of ours which has no designation for the position each card occupies, that negative card can attach to either of the other two. So Knight of Swords can be avoiding playing games, avoiding pretenses, or Knight of Swords can be running from love or avoiding connecting. Six of Wands is influence, usually subversive influence or influences we don’t consciously acknowledge. We know about the love bug, about Mother Nature’s part in our love life, but we tend to brush that aside. We really ignore the part our body chemistry plays in our decision-making and our feelings. We don’t want to admit that we formed a dislike or a like to something back there due to a mood an allergy got us into, so that dislike or like persists because somehow we have to believe that feeling back then was based on fact. Hierophant
Hierophant is about appearances, about ‘face,’ ‘face values,’ and – just like its meaning – it is a different character depending upon the company it is in. You see the pope doing a routine ritual with his usual helpers. Hierophant is about the distinction between what the ceremony means to the public, and to the theologians. The meanings about appearances rise from this deeper end of its pool of meanings. Looking good, seeming okay. It’s one of the cards that translates ‘good’ in various ways.
Normally, Hierophant means ‘normally’ – the usual, the routine, behaving oneself, being respectable and decent, being straight and sober, doing the right thing, ought, should, having good intentions. That stretches to include ‘safe’ and ‘no harm’ or ‘harmless.’ ‘Innocuous’ belong solidly to Hierophant.
Naturally, this is the card for church and religion. It makes a marriage card ‘holy matrimony,’ for instance.
Hierophant is associated with the word ‘physical,’ as is Page of Wands. Hierophant is about official reality, about certificates and titles and ‘on paper.’ It is one of the Tarot cards that can mean the name of something or someone (rarely – usually that’s Page of Wands). It means ‘committed’ too, which is (I guess) an outgrowth of the ‘official’ meanings. Committed couple is ‘an item.’
Six of Wands
Seeing Hierophant in the company of Six of Wands alerts you to not take things at face value, because Six of Wands says: Things are not as they appear. And it’s a card that most readers (my opinion of course) miss its real meaning for what appears to be that. The horse is trying to tell you something!
Six of Wands is a false victory. Win the battle, lose the war. That’s what happened to an English king (Richard III, I believe). He won, and chased the invading Arabs into an ambush, and was their captive all his life thereafter.
One class of meanings for this complex Tarot card is all about pretense – similar to Two of Cups. (You hate to see Six of Wands and Two of Cups together, because something’s really up.) Here are some today’s Six of Wands words: Playing, pretending, seems, appears, fool yourself, go along with.
Six of Wands goes a little darker into deceit with these words sampled from today’s spread: sleazes, up to something, crook, seduce, has an agenda.
Six of Wands also looks at the same situation from the victim’s point of view with today’s words: tricked into, is misled.

Magician is one of the cards Tarot could do without, except for its ‘male principle’ status. That’s an esoteric thing, and Rider Waite is a Golden Dawn descendant. Male principle gives Magician its meanings. They are simple, so simple that in spreads Magician often gets lost in the verbs and pronouns other cards make. It mainly means ‘he’ and represents a (or the) guy in your spread’s story (as well as pronouns: I, myself, yourself, him, himself.
And Magician mainly means any form of ‘do’ or ‘make,’ as well as ‘to bring about,’ to bring down,’ etc. It also means ‘act,’ action,’ and forms of that word. Magician means willpower, and the will. (Magicians’ definition of magic is ‘will.’)
Magician is intentional, voluntary, action. It means to start, to volunteer, ‘voluntarily,’ voluntary, initiate.
You see the suits of Tarot on Magician’s table. He raises his right hand to heaven with his wand (will) to bring down what he wills. His left hand grounds the action to earth: He is pointing, see?

Hierophant is the way things are, the official reality, the mainstream world view – the way things are and the way people think. Hierophant represents those four-letter words: should and ought. -As a Rider Waite Tarot card with few and clear meanings that derive from its illustration, Star is an anchor card. (An anchor card is one whose meanings are few and clear so that you look to it first in your spread because it is simpler and will take less time to read that spread using these anchor cards.)
Need to know: This is a picture of a shapely performer doing a ritual bath (ablution) and singing. Two main sides to Seven of Wands: the defense and the offense. Think of Seven of Wands both as a drunk who demands the car keys and raises hell, and as mad-as-hell-and-won’t-take-that-anymore. All the Tarot cards apply in every side of the story they represent, but Seven of Wands is more blatantly obvious about this.
The story here is that his neighbors have banded together to take his property in a surprise attack, and he has one shoe and one boot on, and is in his night-dress. It’s six against one, and the rightful defender will win this battle (tradition, which goes along with the fact that in nature the defender usually wins). So you’re outnumbered but overcome and survive. (Or you’re being warned not to join in an attack.)

Star and Seven of Wands can both be mouthy; Star in a good way – babbling, spilling guts, confessing, praising, encouraging, promising, saying ‘I love you,’ being the cheerleader; Seven of Wands in a bad (or baddish) way – protesting, demanding, raising hell, being pushy. But Seven of Wands can join Star in the promotion of something or someone: Seven of Wands can be on the soapbox promoting as well as on the soapbox protesting. Think of Seven of Wands as either pushing away or pushing for. Promotion or prevention!
Star and Fool are both very upbeat, optimistic, bubbly, happy-go-lucky.

Fool also disses – but blithely, because Fool is ‘water off a duck’s back.’ Nothing affects, impresses, or even gets the attention of Fool. Fool goes on his merry way. Fool is so mixed and unhitched that it can mean both faith and disbelief. Its faith is the assumption it is famous for; its disbelief is its congenitally open mind. Fools mind is totally open because it does not connect to, or connect anything to anything else. You could say fool, minute by minute, freshly goes on a case by case basis.
Fool’s judgment is suspended on everything all the time, pending further input until the day the young Fool expires, so Fool has no beliefs to defend. Seven of Wands is convinced, has allegiances, and leaps to their defense. Our story is about this choice we have on an hour-by-hour basis of whether to missionary or not. And whether to take offense or not notice.
Fool and Star describe the joy we feel when we are free of the confrontation (whether we won, lost, or ignored it). It’s the same intense spiritual please we feel when we have recovered from a more serious illness.

Six of Wands is about sharing too, but, there’s always something hidden in Six of Wands, which often is playing a role, acting as if, faking it, putting one’s best foot forward, pretending, going along with, and getting people or someone to go along with. Six of Wands can be the mooch too, or the stockbroker that gets a cut when you make money but doesn’t share your losses from his or her advice. But sharing happiness is just as much what today is about as sharing money – more-so, even. The main message today is ‘face,’ that it pays to make the best of it, to keep as tony an image as we can, and even to dress the part we look forward to playing. We are using the very best of Six of Wands’ meanings because he is in such good company today, on his very best behavior.
………………………….. Six of Wands‘ pure meaning is about betrayal and about winning the battle and losing the cause. It is about a victory, but always one that isn’t what it seems. ‘Agenda’ is a key word for this card in Rider Waite. It can represent someone ‘out to get you.’ Pictured is King Richard III’s kidnap by Arabs he was fighting, covertly arranged by the next in line for England’s throne. This card can warn you of a false friend, as Two of Cups can. In application, the card does not have to be about that dark a story, of course. In application, the emphasis is usually on persuasion (getting someone to go along with something, or someone getting you to go along with something), pretense (acting the part, role, face, fitting in with the group), and parasitic people(taking advantage, taking the credit, mooching – which is sharing in others’ or another’s income and assets unfairly – sucking up or riding the coat tails of a more enterprising person, being a con artist even. Look at the expression on the horse’s face. Does it remind you of the horse in Sun, who has an obvious agenda of his or her own?
………………………….. Three of Cups is sharing with people you can and do trust. The presence of this card takes the sting out of Six of Wands – it negates the ‘double-cross’ aspects of Six of Wands, and brings out its ‘fitting in and being a part of the team’ aspects. Being able to make these distinctions is part of expertise in Tarot reading. Three of Cups are fashionable women who team up to do things together … the girl gang, the girlfriends. It is also investors (doesn’t have to be female ones) who jointly put money into an enterprise and share the profit. This is both a business and a social card, like Three of Pentacles is. Both Three of Cups and Three of Pentacles very often speak of a group of three people: watch for that. You can count on Three of Cups to not have a dark side, even when it is in bad company.

An anchor card is one that has few and well-defined meanings so that you look where it is in the spread and can unravel the message quickly. Three of Wands’ picture says it all: Your ship is coming in. It says ‘It’s profitable’ and ‘making a profit.’ It says that, whatever you are asking about, its future is assured. It says you have something to look forward to. Six of Wands …….. Six of Wands shows a victory wreath on a pole, and a horseman wearing the leaves of victory upon his head. The horse is covered and maybe has ‘a look on his face.’ Many readers adopt this as a victory card, just as they adopt Two of Cups as a love card. But both of these cards have a pronounced dark side in Tarot Verbatim™, especially this Six of Wands one. Why? The story is the abduction of King Richard III who was captive of Arabs all his life as a result of pursuing them in a battle he won, all of which was arranged by someone who wanted to be king in his place – and was. So Six of Wands involves an agenda and/or a pretense. The pretense can be simply fitting in, playing your role, going along with other people’s roles, face, persuading or enticing people to agree with your position, or going along with them and agreeing with theirs.

Three of Cups …………. Three of Cups is sharing, camaraderie, girlfriends, making a profit, pooling money and/or resources to accomplish something together and splitting the proceeds afterward, and having a good time, including dating and partying. You see three women toasting their successful harvest together, obviously close friends.

Three of Wands …………. Three of Wands is one of the very simplest cards in Rider Waite. You see a well-dressed man watching the ships come in, waiting. (Yes, that’s supposed to be a body of water, not a desert – printer’s error that they never correct, same as you see on the horn in Judgment, where the color of the skin invades the lips and the mouthpiece part of the horn.) So Three of Wands is income, profit, money coming in, waiting, and a good future. It also simply refers to the future and makes a nearby verb future tense.

Here’s a special Wednesday treat for all of you who do your own Tarot using this site as a library of combined meanings of Tarot cards. The treat is a peek into why your question should include pertinent factors that the cards are not precise about. The big factors are dates, person(s), and time.
Ask ‘who did it’ and you get a description you may not recognize. Ask the motive of who did it, and you will get a description of the scene that usually tells you whodunit. Don’t ask ‘when’ about anything because Tarot is mass-consciousness based ‘out there’ or ‘in there’ somewhere, and isn’t earthbound with clocks and calendars. Instead, you ask ‘Will X happen in Y time?’ as I call it. Not ‘When will he call?’ but ‘Will he call this week?’ That converts the question into a yes-or-no one which Tarot will answer well (or pretty well) giving details that are applicable (cogent).
First thing here is the question I did answer for our client ‘as modified.’ She wants to know ‘what a relationship is going to become,’ not specifying the relationship. Tarot Verbatim is fine (is excellent, really) with that. With no background, however, once the cards talk about marriage and leaving or switching, you as the reader don’t know who’s who. The answer is to be from Client’s perspective, but you don’t know which position Client occupies unless that is in the ‘history.’ And there’s no history required in these cold Email readings. This is why the instructions on the Email Reading tab suggest saying whether love interest is married
I wrote Client, and when she did not respond right away, simply modified the question to include just Dude and her. That is the first set of spreads you see.
Then Client answers with history and perspectives. Tarot did rise to the occasion in its answer.
THEN I include the original set of cards which are confusing to apply if you don’t know the history. Now, you can put these together and see how to handle this – how to phrase a general relationship question which gives no identity of parties or background.

Thank you for this.
He is not married, but recently divorced with all sorts of drama with manipulative ex and 2 very manipulative/manipulated kids.
In this sense, even though we are very much in a committed relationship (it’s been almost 2 years, and we met well after his separation but during the final months of divorce litigation), I guess I am the other woman because of all the claws and fangs still gripping him and pulling him in directions his heart does not agree with?
I should add that he has said many time that he will “never get married again”… perhaps he is conflicted about that belief and the prospect of me walking away from him and the drama that he may have to continue to deal with for the next several years…
