A glance at the complex and puzzling illustration of World leaves you with a strong impression that the woman in the wreath-wall isn’t having anything to do with what’s outside it. Once in a while it even refers to ‘cutting the others out of the deal.’ And that is the central idea to World. It applies all kinds of ways.
World is a spiritual adept, a concept that expands to include her being superwoman, a master, Teflon Lady.
World is an esoteric Tarot card at heart, but today is not the day for that. Today, World means such things as: not involved, not with those people, out of the loop, shutting people out, someone who isn’t interested, is not open to, is closed off from, and not dealing with it. (For the complete meanings of World, Google ‘World Tarot Verbatim,’ which takes you to the archives here.) World is the woman who doesn’t want the guy in romance stories, sometimes.
The illustration, though, also brings World to being the shapely woman, the trophy woman. Heck, if your line of inquiry ever involves nude dancers in one of those cages, World is your card.
He stares at, concentrates upon, that pentacle. Page of Pentacles is one of the cards that often translates words about looking and seeing.
But most often, Page of Pentacles is about thinking, feeling, knowing, considering, being interested in. Two key words for him are mind and idea.
Page of Pentacles is an identity card, which means it translates single pronouns, most often ‘I’ and ‘he.’ (And today it appears with Temperance which can translate ‘we,’ ‘us,’ ‘they,’ and ‘them.’) So Page of Pentacles can simply say the ‘I’ or ‘he’ in your spread, and can also translate: I am, I think, I feel, I know, he is, he thinks, he feels, he knows. ‘He feels he is’ is just as likely.
Today Page of Pentacles translates ‘introspective mood,’ reflecting that focus on self this card represents.
Tarot Verbatim™ ignores the dilution theme that pouring water and wine together suggest. The angel is pretty much ignored too, except for the fact the symbol of healing on his chest brings that word into Temperance’s dictionary.
What Tarot Verbatim™ picks up on is the back-and-forth flow, and it applies to communication. Temperance is conversation back and forth. ‘I’ll get back to you on that,’ we say. Temperance also applies to ‘mutual’ and ‘together.’ It will say ‘with’ regarding two people or two sides. ‘I’m with her.’ And it is all about dealing with another person, socializing with, associating with. Negotiation and bargaining belong to Temperance too.
Temperance is also relationship, close or intimate relationship, partners and partnership. ‘Equal intimate partners’ belongs to Temperance, and each of the three words does separately. Temperance is your best buddy, your close friend.

Now Without The Pictures |
Just as when you reach a certain level of social savvy the mooches and muggers disregard you, so does trouble generally avoid you when you reach a certain level of spiritual savvy. That concept is the core meaning of World, illustrated by the woman with two wands (Master of Both Worlds) dancing nude in the secure confines of her wreath-wall, unnoticed and un-interfered-with by the critters outside. So World is one of the esoteric (occult) cards at heart. (Magicians draw a circle to keep the bad spirits away from what they are doing. The wreath is that circle, potentially.)
Not today though. Today World is counterbalanced by Temperance. Temperance is as much intimate association as World is absence of association. And in between, we have ‘making up your mind’ and also ‘who I am’ in Page of Pentacles.
So here’s a theme of contrasting being a member and being excluded (or excluding yourself). To be or not to be, that is the question Page of Pentacles ponders about whatever the association or membership is. If I’m Alice’s friend, Jim will hate me … hmm. There’s also a theme of a person not interested in associating with another person who dreams of a close bond.
Another story these three cards make is that of someone who wants to be a friend of a superior person. World is a superior person, and is also a person who is not available to communicate or socialize with. (This can be the CEO you can’t get through to on the phone, for instance.)
Both Page of Pentacles and Knight of Pentacles hold the pentacle and stare at it, and both these cards involve a focus on self – but in very different ways.
Page of Pentacles is an identity card (as is Page of Wands). The similar meanings of these two pages probably comes from the fact that pages were knights in training – in training at the home of a stranger knight, not their father. They had to fit in to succeed at the only career available to them. (Careers were in your genes in those days.) So the pages had to present themselves as acceptable good people, which is the meaning you see for them here.

Temperance shows water and wine being blended. In real life, Temperance is about the back-and-forth communication and closeness (blending). With Queen of Pentacles being the caretaker, and the contributor or investor, the loyal backer of man and family, and Temperance being the deal, you see a woman investing … or contributing or donating … her resources (money and influence) in a deal or a relationship. Knight of Swords is turning a situation around, and is rushing about on the road. This is where we get the story of a woman who backs something she believes in, and the man doing the direct hand-to-hand and face-to-face contact.
Knight of Swords is one of the cards that means ‘change,’ and Queen of Pentacles influences, so here we have a story of her influence changing him.

Queen of Cups is strongly feminine and usually refers to a female. She is the dreamer type: See how she contemplates that doodad as a flood snakes around her chair? Queen of Cups can be woo-woo.
There’s a dichotomy to this Queen of Cups card. It can be the smart woman, she who knows, and it can be the naïve woman. She is thinking, figuring out, or she is engrossed in something irrelevant as the water rises.
Think of Temperance as the flow between two people in a relationship or in a transaction – the back and forth that is represented by pouring the water and the wine together to blend. Temperance is the main card for intimacy, and is a strong supporting card for deals and dealing with. It is also partnership (So is Lovers, which is also a relationship and intimacy card.) So Temperance is about two people, and is about what you are dealing with. Watch for it to be one of several cards that translate ‘together.’

The wine and water blends as it pours back and forth, and yet Temperance, in my practice anyway, doesn’t partake of the ‘flow’ meanings you would expect except as to relationships, communication, responding, conversation, intimacy or closeness, exchanges of anything back and forth, close friends or buddies.

Run your eyes down the red words in NOW WE SHOW WHERE EACH PHRASE IN EACH SENTENCE COMES FROM, and you will feel Page of Swords. Adrenaline. But different sources for the adrenaline rush, different types of that sort of stimulation.
The first type that occurs in our one-sentence readings today is excitement, also expressed as: invigorating; turns me on; a thrill.
The second type in the order of occurrence here is anger: angry, mad at the world, angry person, mad with, are mad, to set you off.
The third type in our spreads today is a general category about being nervous in different ways, and here are all those words: nervous, under pressure, jittery, feeling pressured, face threats, is upset, your stress, makes me uneasy, is edgy, drives me crazy, getting on my last nerve.
The fourth type is social scenes: drama, jealous about, aggravate.
The fifth type is fear and paranoia, and the words for these today are: how he fears, paranoid that, afraid what.
And then there’s a rare translate for Page of Swords – distractions. Distractions are a form of irritation at least sometimes.
Eight of Wands is a weird card, okay? – in Tarot Verbatim™ anyway. The picture shows the wands flying through the air one on top of another. That explains all its ‘fast’ and ‘quick’ and even ‘hurry’ meanings, and also anything about verbal or written communication over the wire or internet – but this card is the main communication card for any kind – smoke signals, telepathy, texting – any way at all. Today we have: verbal, talking, a talk, have to say, chat, calls, texts.
The wands one on top of another flying through the air also is a fairly good excuse for all those meanings about continual or sequential or ‘one after the other’ type phrases. ‘Continual’ is express typically as ‘keeps’ when that is a verb or adverb – usually ‘keeps at it’ or ‘keeps doing.’ Often the ‘keeps’ refers to another card’s verb meaning. ‘Continual’ is also expressed as frequent, constant, or often. ‘Continual’ also appears in phrases like today’s ‘is getting.’
Now come common Eight of Pentacles meanings for which there is scant support in the illustration. The ‘sequential’ translate for Eight of Wands appears as all sorts of phrases like today’s ‘one after another.’ You can say: over and over, time after time, each time or each and every time, etc. There are a lot of those.
Another group of words owned by Eight of Wands is the ‘increasingly’ class: more and more, closer and closer, and similar phrases.
And now for a very common category of Eight of Wands meanings: a lot, another, more, every time, too much, all those, most, many, all kinds of.
Temperance is even weirder than Eight of Wands, meanings-to-illustration wise. The pouring back and forth of water and wine to dilute it (hence ‘Temperance’ in imbibing intoxicating spirits) does not invoke any dilution meanings or alcohol related meanings for me in my Tarot trip. Nope. I am happy for you if it does for you.
Sharing an overlap with Three of Pentacles, Temperance is a main relationship card; and it’s the back-and-forth motion that meanings flock to in this picture. But the back-and-forth is not literal as it is in Two of Pentacles. Nope. The back-and-forth relates to communication, to response and reciprocity, to intimate communication – heart-to-heart stuff. Intimate partners is a common translate for Temperance. And like Lovers – another relationship card that often is about two people – Temperance means ‘partners’ in any sense. Temperance goes further and means ‘together,’ and two people together.
Besides the intimacy category, Temperance is all about being together, getting together, being friends or buddies, best friends or close friends.
And like Three of Pentacles, Temperance very often is dealing with, making deals – offer and exchange situations.

Synopsis |
Some people are activists and talkers, and some people delve into depths of knowledge and creativity. They are the quiet ones. These two make a good team, we opine here: They balance one another; they reciprocate one another’s talents and approaches. Even in an intimate relationship, a talker pairs with a listener. A salesman pairs with someone who knows about the background stuff about the product – the paperwork for instance – that the salesperson isn’t the type for.

We can do without Temperance; it is sort of a Middle Ages add-on. An angel (with a symbol of healing on his chest) pours water and wine back and forth. In real-life Tarot, this card takes this back-and-forth blending to mean intimacy and communication. It ought to belong to the ‘flow’ theme, but it doesn’t show up there either. So Temperance is deals and dealing; Temperance is communication and intimacy. It often translates ‘relationship’ or close/intimate relationship. It can say ‘reciprocal.’ It can be buddies. It is propinquity too: just standing next to someone, once in a while, is a Temperance thing.
Temperance (communication) brings out the language and speaking side of Page of Wands here today. ‘Most every phrase he makes today is about that: a talk; told; discuss; flirts; talks with; verbally; blabs; say so, etc. He does produce ‘the body,’ and ‘physical’ and ‘proud of’ and ‘salesmanship.’ Gone for the moment are all his Prince Charming, good-looking guy honorable mentions. He also, today, isn’t ‘the type of person who.’
So how does High Priestess mean ‘she who knows’ in so many ways? The first cards of the Major Arcanae represent esoteric principles, according to meanings that numbers have to occultists. Two is the passive feminine principle of receptivity and knowing (as opposed to Magician, the ‘one,’ the masculine principle of being active on the physical plane, doing, and not active on mental and spiritual planes). This begets High Priestess’ being private, knowing all, being in the background, being spiritual or even being the spiritual plane, staying or remaining, secret knowledge, and knowledge of secrets. High Priestess is considered active on the spiritual plane and passive on the physical, the opposite of Magician. So she gets to be the smart lady, and she gets to be the other woman by default – the waiting, and the being alone meanings.

Both Temperance and Page of Wands are about talking. Temperance is a two-way conversation, a dialog. Page of Wands features one person talking. Our plot thickens when High Priestess joins them – someone who is receptive (a listener); a secret; someone who knows so well; a woman who isn’t responsive, who is quiet.
Temperance is relationship – close relationship, intimate relationship, interrelating, reciprocating, having a deal together, being together, being close as buddies or lovers or partners, or as a team.
High Priestess is not reciprocating, not divulging what she knows, but is alone and private.
High Priestess is the lady; Page of Wands is the good guy, and the good looking guy. He is a talker; she is a listener. He is about himself; she is a fount of wisdom and expertise.
It’s easy to see, in our three-card story here, a close relationship between a flirty fellow and a quiet lady; a talkative fellow and a woman who doesn’t divulge what she knows; a handsome guy and an introverted gal.
You can also see a woman who knows all – who is an expert – talking one-on-one in depth about whatever that is. Note that Page of Wands is physical and High Priestess is Spiritual. Page of Wands even represents the physical body in health questions. And High Priestess even represents the spiritual plane. And Page of Wands is as extroverted, outgoing, as High Priestess is introverted.
Look a little further, and you see spiritual healing because High Priestess is spiritual (is even the spiritual plane) and one of Temperance’s minor meanings is healing because of a symbol on the angel’s chest.

Temperance has a working title in the back of my mind: equal intimate partners. A close working relationship – complete with responding, complete with dialog (talking). Temperance can translate ‘we,’ meaning two are one.
‘Together’ is a key word for Temperance: We are together on this; we got together; standing next to someone; we are on the same side.
Relationship is also Temperance’s key word, and it is any kind of real actual well-intentioned one at all – whether it be social, business, friends or lovers. (Yes, Temperance assures this is a trustworthy partner, a good relationship. Unless there’s a treachery card to impugn that.)
Temperance means deal and dealing – and again, in any category of life. It specifically means direct contact, which can tell you ‘reports directly to’ in a business question. Temperance and Emperor, for instance say ‘reports directly to the head man,’ whoever that is in the subject at hand.
Today, next to Empress, with the emotional Five of Cups’ influence, Temperance is about lovers – and friends of lovers.
Five of Cups is one of those self-explanatory cards. It’s obviously about mourning and about a loss. It’s obviously feeling awful, and so it means depression even when the story doesn’t include a loss.
Five of Cups also means waste (the spilled wine). It is about regretting the past, and about being haunted by and maybe even obsessed with the past. We get this from the fact the black-robed figure turns its (his?) back on the full cups, and contemplates only the spilled one. That same spilled wine makes Five of Cups one of the cards that signifies alcoholism or a hangover, and it can join other cards to mean quitting drinking.
Empress is a woman, a good-looking woman, a prosperous woman.
See the female sign, and the heart-shaped shield that also meant female in ancient times? (It is actually a lewd representation of a woman’s butt from a bending-over position, at least for the Celts.) Empress is so female she can translate ‘she’ any day.
I can explain the spread of the types of woman Empress embraces – so many she is meaningless in herself: Empress is an amalgamation of all the fertility goddesses rolled into one. So she is the pregnant woman, the ideal woman, the sexpot or slut, the beauty, the kept woman, the spoiled or well-off woman, that vixen, and the resource. The ‘resource’ does not have to be a person; it can be a general word.
Empress is one of the cards you look to near the end of figuring out your sentence; not an anchor card.

Run your eyes down the red words in NOW WE SHOW WHERE EACH PHRASE IN EACH SENTENCE COMES FROM, and you will feel Page of Swords. Adrenaline. But different sources for the adrenaline rush, different types of that sort of stimulation.
The first type that occurs in our one-sentence readings today is excitement, also expressed as: invigorating; turns me on; a thrill.
The second type in the order of occurrence here is anger: angry, mad at the world, angry person, mad with, are mad, to set you off.
The third type in our spreads today is a general category about being nervous in different ways, and here are all those words: nervous, under pressure, jittery, feeling pressured, face threats, is upset, your stress, makes me uneasy, is edgy, drives me crazy, getting on my last nerve.
The fourth type is social scenes: drama, jealous about, aggravate.
The fifth type is fear and paranoia, and the words for these today are: how he fears, paranoid that, afraid what.
And then there’s a rare translate for Page of Swords – distractions. Distractions are a form of irritation at least sometimes.
Eight of Wands is a weird card, okay? – in Tarot Verbatim™ anyway. The picture shows the wands flying through the air one on top of another. That explains all its ‘fast’ and ‘quick’ and even ‘hurry’ meanings, and also anything about verbal or written communication over the wire or internet – but this card is the main communication card for any kind – smoke signals, telepathy, texting – any way at all. Today we have: verbal, talking, a talk, have to say, chat, calls, texts.
The wands one on top of another flying through the air also is a fairly good excuse for all those meanings about continual or sequential or ‘one after the other’ type phrases. ‘Continual’ is express typically as ‘keeps’ when that is a verb or adverb – usually ‘keeps at it’ or ‘keeps doing.’ Often the ‘keeps’ refers to another card’s verb meaning. ‘Continual’ is also expressed as frequent, constant, or often. ‘Continual’ also appears in phrases like today’s ‘is getting.’
Now come common Eight of Pentacles meanings for which there is scant support in the illustration. The ‘sequential’ translate for Eight of Wands appears as all sorts of phrases like today’s ‘one after another.’ You can say: over and over, time after time, each time or each and every time, etc. There are a lot of those.
Another group of words owned by Eight of Wands is the ‘increasingly’ class: more and more, closer and closer, and similar phrases.
And now for a very common category of Eight of Wands meanings: a lot, another, more, every time, too much, all those, most, many, all kinds of.
Temperance is even weirder than Eight of Wands, meanings-to-illustration wise. The pouring back and forth of water and wine to dilute it (hence ‘Temperance’ in imbibing intoxicating spirits) does not invoke any dilution meanings or alcohol related meanings for me in my Tarot trip. Nope. I am happy for you if it does for you.
Sharing an overlap with Three of Pentacles, Temperance is a main relationship card; and it’s the back-and-forth motion that meanings flock to in this picture. But the back-and-forth is not literal as it is in Two of Pentacles. Nope. The back-and-forth relates to communication, to response and reciprocity, to intimate communication – heart-to-heart stuff. Intimate partners is a common translate for Temperance. And like Lovers – another relationship card that often is about two people – Temperance means ‘partners’ in any sense. Temperance goes further and means ‘together,’ and two people together.
Besides the intimacy category, Temperance is all about being together, getting together, being friends or buddies, best friends or close friends.
And like Three of Pentacles, Temperance very often is dealing with, making deals – offer and exchange situations.
