Too much: That’s our Ten of Wands. Well, he has too much to do, but he’s doing it. This is about a difficult task, a hard time, a long time, keeping at it, doing it all in one load, a gradual, exhausting, uphill climb. It translates ‘forever’ fairly often. If the question is ‘will it happen in this certain time?, the answer when this Ten of Wands shows up is easily: Longer than that.

The focus of Strength is taming the beast (overcoming personal challenges), solving situations, and preventing troublemakers or trouble from being a threat. It shows an assertive woman who can handle anything because she has spiritual strength, represented by the symbol above her head and her white gown with garlands. Strength is ‘on it.’ Strength has influence and is even controlling. She is the Tarot counterpart of Chariot. And like World, her spiritual ability repels interference.

![]()
Here’s that wise guy, the one who does as he pleases, cheats people, and takes his half down the middle. The unethical competition, the cruel taker. Here’s your mugger, robber and thief lead card too. But sometimes Five of Swords means to get even, to kick butt, and to beat something by asserting yourself. He is the cheater in any scene. He represents the ‘I’ll show you’ attitude, the ‘you can’t do that to ME’ attitude, and even the ‘I’ve got mine’ attitude. Five of Swords is ‘on the take.’
Now Without The Pictures |
You see Five of Swords and Strength, you have a clash – no way around it. It could even be an internal struggle (struggle with Self), or it could be any two opposing parties (people or ideas or organizations). Whatever, a skirmish is underway. Each of these cards tells you that, and together they scream it!
Strength and Five of Swords are both very assertive and controlling persons. Five of Swords is associated with bullying, stealing, oneupsmanship, outsmarting, being a wiseguy or bad guy, a snarly antagonizing person or situation. A phrase for Five of Swords is ‘show you who’s boss.’ It represents the bully; it represents being picked on by a bullying person; and it covers getting even too.
And why is this so? – because the story in the picture here in Five of Swords is that these guys are young knights who were doing swordplay, and the smirker, after he won, claimed the fight was a duel, in which case he claims their ancestral inheritance of their family land and business connection.
Strength, on the other hand, is associated with preventing interference and disruption, or handling it – resolving it, applying a solution for it. Strength is taming the monster; Five of Swords is the monster. Strength represents the solution to a situation, and is a person who solves problems, and Five of Swords intimidates and is the problem. So sometimes you see Strength and Five of Swords telling a story about a manager disciplining a thieving employee, or a thief being prosecuted, or even a risk manager preventing thievery or disruptions.
Five of Swords goes right alongside Strength as Strength’s antagonist (as the opposition whom Strength quashes or prevents – whom Strength shuts down or shuts up). But Strength can be the bossy controlling dame in the same way Five of Swords is the bossy controlling guy. This is a totally different setting: The shoe is on the other foot, so to speak. This domineering-woman scenario for Strength and Five of Swords is far less frequent, but it exists. The parties which/who are established in the Question, or the input of surrounding cards, will tell you the story.
Five of Swords is strongly the bad guy (or even criminal) who disrupts and interferes. It is the lead card for the wise-guy attitude, the smirking sneak, the thief, the bully. Cliches like these belong to Five of Swords: I did it my way; I show you who’s boss; what are you gonna do about it?, I take what I want – all of which are about someone born with the right-of-way.
Strength finesses a clash. The bully has picked on the martial artist here. Strength influences; Five of Swords intimidates. Strength overcomes without a struggle and without passion. Note Strength has her hands around the lion’s snout, as if she were petting the monster. Sometimes petting the monster is the best move. Five of Swords is dark energy. Five of Swords is the smirk, the strut, the desire to put down, humiliate, rip off and hurt. Strength wins: It means to overcome, no way around it. Without Strength around him, Five of Swords may or may not achieve that purpose. So in a fight between a Strength side and a Five of Swords side, Strength overcomes and wins the battle. Quite often Strength is the rightful owner of the turf, and Five of Swords is the intruder. (You may know that in nature the owner of the turf usually wins.)
Socially in the Five-of-Swords-and-Strength situations, we have a male and a female who are in a power struggle, or a man trying to show a woman who’s boss, or a woman making a man behave. Or any combination of those choices.
Strength is the lion tamer, you see, and this Strength card is about overcoming. Strength is the lead card for overcoming both external and internal conflicts and challenges (like bad habits). Strength is mostly ‘on the right side,’ evidenced by the symbols of spiritual power and purity of character in Strength’s illustration.
Ten of Wands is the innocent bystander in our Tarot spread today. Think of Ten of Wands being ‘eventually’ and ‘extremely.’ You see a man who has taken on the whole load, to do it all in one operation. His back is bent, and his progress is slow. But he makes it. He gets there. That is the main point in Ten of Wands: slow progress – the Turtle in Aesop’s fable. Today Ten of Wands means ‘eventually’ several times; means ‘slowly’ several times; means variants of ‘very’ several times, and it mentions ‘huge,’ ‘your burden,’ ‘always,’ ‘constant,’ and ‘keeps at it until.’

You take on the whole job – all kinds of things to it – yourself. Or you carry it all in, in one load, bearing the backbreaking weight. Going through hard times one slow step at a time, it takes forever and is a constant effort. It’s slow going, but at long last, you overcome, you arrive. All these words belong to Ten of Wands through its illustration.
Ten of Wands can be about depression too, but not today: Today, we are overcoming; today we are free of whatever the problem is.

Mastery is what Strength talks about. Being ‘on top of things,’ the way she has her hands on the lion, making him purr when he came to roar. ‘Handle’ and ‘deal with,’ ‘solution’ and ‘overcome’ are Strength’s key words. Strength is a spiritual and esoteric card, about spiritual abilities – specifically about finessing physical circumstances through those spiritual abilities. Preventing conflict by being clearly and quietly able to handle it. Stifling external opposition and internal vices or resistance. Laying hands on, getting a grip, even petting – because she has her hands on that beast.
Strength will of course come up for a strong woman, or a controlling woman – even, under duress from neighbor cards, saying ‘bossy bitch.’

![]()
You have to get a ‘feel’ for Fool. Fool means ‘It doesn’t matter; nothing matters.’ It even means ‘nothing’ and ‘to not be’ or ‘to not be present.’ That comes from its being the 0, the zero, the cipher of the number system. It applies in so many ways that seem contradictory – like meaning both ‘free’ and ‘free of,’ when ‘free of’ can act as a negator (a negative word like ‘not’). Think ‘water off a duck’s back’ as Fool’s core meaning.
Fool’s most frequent application is variations of ‘I don’t know,’ which includes ‘forget.’ Fool has a lot of mental meanings, including being the subconscious. It often translates phrases like: no idea; than you can even think of; an open mind; without even knowing it; unacknowledged; don’t think.
Fool also has this ‘wide open’ vibe to it that applies as phrases like ‘any at all’ or ‘it’s not at all.’ They grow out of the ‘free’ concept most of the time.
Fool means ‘let it be.’ Often it says ‘just …’ – fill in the blank: just leaves, just let, if you just have, and so on. In a similar vein, Fool says ‘simply.’ Just do it; simply do it – but Fool doesn’t mean the ‘do’ – another card supplies that.
Fool means to be free of, which includes unexpected translations like ‘cleared of’ and ‘shed.’
Fool is on foot, traveling, so it’s one of the cards that means ‘leaving.’ Fool’s ‘leaving’ is about absenting oneself from a scene, moving on, rather than emphasizing whatever or whoever is being left.
Fool is lighthearted, and Fool is optimistic. Fool can be one of those people who are shallow and forever strays.
I could write a Fool book. I will someday. Here, we have not gone into the fact that a lot of Fool’s meanings arise from his being the 0, the zero, the cipher of the number system. These are the words Fool brings us today, mostly
.
Now Without The Pictures |
Ten of Wands, as you can see from its picture, is a downer card. He has too much to bear, it’s ‘backbreaking,’ it’s slow going … even depressing. But today Fool and Strength remove its sting. For all Ten of Wands’ not-so-good meanings, Fool adds its dismissive phrases like: it’s not really; it doesn’t matter; forget it; don’t know about it; shed … ‘Oh, never mind’ stuff.
And For all of Ten of Wands’ not-so-good meanings, Strength adds its tone of mastery: ‘got it under control,’ got a grip on,’ handle it or even finesse it – or stifle, or put a damper on. Strength is strong enough to take on that load and make it purr like the predator she is petting.
Actually, Strength is famous for preventing a scene; Strength as a spiritual operator is wise to coincidence, so Strength can cut the confrontation off at the pass or nip it in the bud. Her dress and her halo announce her credentials to do that.
Always remember that Strength refers to internal issues, vices, and struggles, not just to potential external confrontations and scenes.
Strength and Fool together have some nifty things to say: It doesn’t matter (Fool) how long it takes (Ten of Wands). You can handle (Strength) anything at all (Fool). You have no idea (Fool) how strong you are (Strength). Don’t worry about that (Fool), you’ve got it under control (Strength). In finesse mode (Strength), you simply (Fool) handle that interference (or you could say ‘that vice’ or ‘that opposition’ – whatever Ten of Wands has to say. The solution (Strength) is to just fuggedaboutit (Fool). You don’t know how (Fool), but here you are on top of things (Strength). Your subconscious (Fool) overcomes (Strength). Prevent (Strength) without even knowing it (Fool.) You get free (Fool) by asserting yourself (Strength). Overcome (Strength) and be free (Fool). Clear it up (Strength) before it gets to you (Fool). She can handle (Strength) anything at all (Fool). You have no idea (Fool) how strong you are (Strength). Put a damper on it (Strength) with optimism (Fool). You prevent (Strength) without even knowing it (Fool). Get free just by (Fool) asserting yourself (Strength).
Tarot is saying self-confidence gets you through unscathed.

And people ask ‘Is he or she cheating on me?’ Well, a client on a telephone reading asked the first question, and the answer, which I diagrammed for its usefulness, is ‘He is cheating, feels bad about it, and is making a resolution not to do it again.
Question: Why isn’t he calling me?
Here is a Celtic Cross Layout, Tarot Verbatim™ style: |

Here’s what a Celtic Cross Is: |
First Sentence(s), the part of the spread called the cross.
Page of Pentacles is the first Self card.
Page of Wands is the Cover/Situation card.
Emperor is the Cross/Problem card.
Two of Swords is the Past or ‘just Behind’ card. It is paired with
Hierophant as the Future/Just Ahead card (F.Y.I., I call the Behind and Ahead cards ‘Expanded Present.’ )
Three of Wands is the Foundation card. It is paired with
Three of Pentacles as the Future card.
Second Sentence, called the tower, and it’s 3 cards straight up.
Two of Cups is the second Self card.
Devil is the Others or Situation card (also called ‘environment.’)
Ten of Swords is the Hopes & Fears or Turning Point card
Third Sentence, called Outcome.
And the rest are Outcome, three cards straight across with the middle one aligned with the tower, and sometimes a ‘crown card’ is part of it, as today, which is Strength.
The way you read a Celtic cross spread is: |
First Sentence(s)
The first three cards (first Self, Cover and Cross or, as I call it, Situation and Problem.
Then what I call the expanded present is behind and ahead of the cover and cross cards, so they are labeled Behind and Ahead by me, or Past and Future.
These are paired cards – read that way.
The Foundation and Future cards at the bottom and top of the first sentence’s spread are read paired, usually using future tense because of the future position.
“The arms of the cross” is the two pairs we just spoke of (Behind-Ahead, plus Foundation-Future. Sometimes there’s a special meaning to the combination of these four
Second Sentence
You start anew now (at least in Tarot Verbatim). There are three cards going up. They are often not read in sequence, but keeping the name of the position in mind – especially the second Self card, because the two Self cards often indicate something meaningful. I find the top, third, card sticks less to the function of its position, in my practice.
Today Ten of Swords fits hopes and fears though. I call this the Turning Point or the Crux card, and that seems to fit a little better. The second card
(Devil, this time) is Others/Environment, and I think of it as a situation card like the second card of the first sentence, usually called Cover.
Third Sentence
All these cards, whether you use 3 or 4, are read in any order with no particular individual position name. (You may find, when you first start using three instead of the traditional one card here, that it’s less accurate until you wear a groove in it. Celtic Cross is entrenched in mass consciousness and this is a modification of that.
Here’s The Full Reading |
First Sentence

“I’m a Good Guy, a mature man, and I present myself that way.”
Page of Pentacles, Page of Wands crossed by Emperor – Self, Situation crossed by Problem:

I’m a Good Guy – Page of Pentacles (Card 1. Self He is thinking of himself … “I’m a Good Guy.” )
I’m a Good Guy and I present myself that way, – Page of Wands (Card 2. Situation)

a mature man, a Grownup. – Emperor (Card 3. Crux/Situation)
“I have not been behaving myself, I am not innocent..”
Two of Swords Behind paired with Hierophant Ahead:

Have not been – Two of Swords (Card 6. Behind)

behaving myself. – Hierophant (Card 7. Ahead)
“In the future, I am going to do my part in this relationship fair and square, as agreed.”
Three of Wands Foundation paired with Three of Pentacles Future:

do my part in this relationship fair and square, as agreed – Three of Pentacles (Card 4. Future)

In the future – Three of Wands (Card 5. Foundation)
Second Sentence

“Under the influence of Lust – it got the best of me – I failed utterly and am devastated.”
Two of Cups as Second Self card, Devil as Situation/Others/Environment card, Ten of Swords as Hopes and Fears or Turning Point or Crux card.

Under the influence of – Two of Cups (Card 8. Second Self)

lust – Devil (Card 9. Situation / Environment)

(It got the best of me.) – Two of Cups
I failed utterly and am devastated. – Ten of Swords (Card 10. Crux / Problem )
Third Sentence – Outcome

“I am so ashamed, and no matter how hard it is I WILL get control of this situation … or she will make me behave.”

I am so ashamed – Five of Pentacles

and no matter how difficult that is, – Ten of Wands

I am determined to get control of this situation – Chariot

or she will get control of it and make me behave. – Strength
NOTE that each card in this entire spread is using its traditional core meaning. That is a signature of an accurate Tarot report, and it is a LOT easier to read. This just flows if you are an experienced reader.
Now we look at theme cards in this spread: |
What catches your eye immediately as someone who has Tarot experience is the tower part of the spread (the second sentence, the three cards straight up). It has Devil and Ten of Swords, which would suggest some kind of wrongdoing, some moral downfall, some being sorry for a sin.
The other card, Two of Cups, in Tarot Verbatim is the main card for personal betrayal, sexual trespass, and taking advantage secretly of another person. So in Tarot Verbatim, this spread screams ‘He had sex and is so sorry he betrayed you. (Ten of Swords is sorry.) And, by the way: Ten of Swords is also a card of betrayal. Ten of Swords is devastated, laid low.
You also notice that the first two cards of your spread both mean a clean-cut good moral guy, Page of Pentacles and Page of Wands. Of course, in the first sentence ‘I did not behave myself’ or ‘I did not act in a decent moral way’ is part of the second sentence’s message about ‘sorry I failed.’
In the third sentence, Five of Pentacles is a miserable failure and Ten of Wands is so sorry. (Ten of Wands is also saying ‘no matter how difficult. Tarot does these double meanings.)
In the first sentence, the “I am going to do my part in this relationship” is restated in Chariot, the responsible disciplined person who gets the job done. Strength too prevents misbehavior: It and Chariot are about discipline. . As I promised, this spread is a fine example of interlocking repetition, and it’s very clear to read.

GUIDANCE There’s always something to fix. There’s always something to figure out. We think long and hard in a worrisome way when a situation is coming up that – we surmise – calls for for more assertive handling than we want to muster. Today we gently suggest that a long hard think re creative solutions prepares you for the moment of confrontation so that you may sidestep being very assertive, and handle it with a magic touch.

.
Ten of Wands – Strength – Queen of Cups
.
.
…………
……….
…………
……….. There will always be strong women who think things out so that they sidestep – deftly with the grace of a matador – what would have been a confrontation with some beast. They get a grip on it in their heads first, so their hands are quick. Our spread pictures two woman, so we are speaking in the female gender but of course this situation applies to everyone. We have the woman who is thinking (Queen of Cups) and the woman who is acting (Strength). Ten of Wands, the remaining card is a bystander meaning ‘long, hard,’ a long time, or difficult.
………………
………….. Strength is making the beast that confronted her purr, the way she handles and fixes the situation. She is making peace, with an accent on the ‘making.’ She is shutting up the predator with her bare hands.
Strength is one of those lovely Rider Waite spiritual cards. Its message is that when you have thought through some hazard and are ready to preemptively handle it, it quits showing up. Bullies see you as a fellow (honorary?) predator when they sense you are relaxed. Try it, it works.
……………..
…………... Queen of Cups is thinking, knowing, figuring out and understanding. That is what she does. She loves her man, and we see her dreamily contemplating some artifact as the place floods. She is the stereotype good woman/nice girl. Her main contribution is: She understands; she loves; she loves and understands her man (or someone else.
………………
…………. Ten of Wands here today is about difficult (so hard); a long time (eventually, in the end, will always be, no end of things, take forever, long and hard, all the time); depressing or depression (so sad); too much (what a huge, long and hard, so hard). Elsewhere that load of timber on his back brings out: doing it all in one load; overwhelmed; barely making it; slow progress, one step at a time; taking it upon yourself. (Not today though!)
………..
…………..
Ten of wands and Strength Ten of Wands and Strength talk about eventually overcoming, about getting the best of it in the long run. It says there will always be (Ten of Wands = long term) a strong woman (Strength). Takes her a while (Ten of Wands) but she tames the beast in him (Strength). Something is difficult (Ten of Wands) to control (Strength). Strength is getting control of your inner demons (what’s eating you), and it’s difficult to do but we eventually get there (Ten of Wands). It takes me forever (Ten of Wands) to lay hands on my problem.
………..
…………..
. Ten of Wands and Queen of Cups There will always be those good woman who understand their man, this says. Ten of Wands is ‘always’ by virtue of its ‘takes forever’ and its ‘slow progress’ category of meanings. Queen of Cups, as usual, is understanding her man. Eventually she (or we) figure it out – since Queen of Cups is to think, ponder, ruminate and cogitate upon some (possibly irrelevant) object or subject, and since ‘eventually’ is one of Ten of Wands’ favorite terms. There’s no end of things to figure out. And you think too much: Too much is also a favorite term for the Ten of Wands. It takes her a long time to figure it out … maybe because she is depressed – because Ten of Wands is also about being so sad it slows you down. She loves her man through hard times (Ten of Wands). Sad (Ten of Wands) memories (Queen of Cups). Think long and hard … or a lot of thought is going into … because she is trying so hard to figure him out.
…………
……………
Strength and Queen of Cups Here is where the nice girl slays the dragon … by soothing the situation over … and overcomes. Queen of Cups, you know now, is the nice girl. Strength is that wonderful moment you you rise to the occasion and finesse something that comes at you. She has tamed her inner demons too: That is why she makes the beast tame. You could say ‘The good woman tames his inner beast’ too. A woman who loves and understands her man gets him to behave. Strength and Queen of Cups is figuring out (Queen of Cups) how to handle adversity (Strength). She gets the best of her memories there, too. A strong woman loves her guy. She also knows how to control the dude.
Fighting in your head in solitaire is so much easier, and more thorough and creative, than reacting to clash or challenge when it pops up. There’s no reason to wait; no rule against strategy. There’s no reason we can’t use the 20/20 of hindsight in foresight mode to vanquish our internal demons and our external opposition. We have two nice ladies here doing exactly this exercise. They say ‘Come on in, the water’s fine.’

Ten of Wands ……… You see a fellow who wants to carry that load in one trip all by himself, and he does, too: It’s understood he makes it just like it’s understood that Seven of Wand wins the battle with invading neighbors. Ten of Wands, with this illustration, is about a difficult time or task; a long duration; a depressing situation or condition; and the extreme or an excess. Those are today’s meanings for this Rider Waite Tarot card. In other company, you find Ten of Wands emphasizing doing it all in one load, or taking on a burden, or an overwhelming situation. Elsewhere, you find this Tarot card describing barely making it, or slow progress one step at a time, or taking something upon yourself.
.
Strength …………. A female adept has such presence the beast who comes to attack ends up purring while she holds his big ol’ mouth shut. You can be she. This is the confidence that gives pause to muggers, or the spiritual maturity that makes you invisible to the dark side. Strength’s emphasis is on taming the beast, providing a solution, preventing attacks or opposition, quashing bad behavior, exerting an influence, taking control or taking charge, making a solution and nipping opposition in the bud. Strength is conquering your own downside, your private demons, whatever is getting the best of you.
.
Queen of Cups ………. Queen of Cups is the nice girl, the good woman, lady. The card has the same problem the type of people it represents have: It tends to translate simply as ‘she’ or ‘his woman.’ She thinks, she sees, she knows: That is the most frequent translate for Queen of Cups. She is the woman who understands her man.
