Ten of Wands
Too much: That’s our Ten of Wands. Well, he has too much to do, but he’s doing it. This is about a difficult task, a hard time, a long time, keeping at it, doing it all in one load, a gradual, exhausting, uphill climb. It translates ‘forever’ fairly often. If the question is ‘will it happen in this certain time?, the answer when this Ten of Wands shows up is easily: Longer than that.
Strength
The focus of Strength is taming the beast (overcoming personal challenges), solving situations, and preventing troublemakers or trouble from being a threat. It shows an assertive woman who can handle anything because she has spiritual strength, represented by the symbol above her head and her white gown with garlands. Strength is ‘on it.’ Strength has influence and is even controlling. She is the Tarot counterpart of Chariot. And like World, her spiritual ability repels interference.
Five of Swords
Here’s that wise guy, the one who does as he pleases, cheats people, and takes his half down the middle. The unethical competition, the cruel taker. Here’s your mugger, robber and thief lead card too. But sometimes Five of Swords means to get even, to kick butt, and to beat something by asserting yourself. He is the cheater in any scene. He represents the ‘I’ll show you’ attitude, the ‘you can’t do that to ME’ attitude, and even the ‘I’ve got mine’ attitude. Five of Swords is ‘on the take.’

You see Five of Swords and Strength, you have a clash – no way around it. It could even be an internal struggle (struggle with Self), or it could be any two opposing parties (people or ideas or organizations). Whatever, a skirmish is underway. Each of these cards tells you that, and together they scream it!
Strength and Five of Swords are both very assertive and controlling persons. Five of Swords is associated with bullying, stealing, oneupsmanship, outsmarting, being a wiseguy or bad guy, a snarly antagonizing person or situation. A phrase for Five of Swords is ‘show you who’s boss.’ It represents the bully; it represents being picked on by a bullying person; and it covers getting even too.
And why is this so? – because the story in the picture here in Five of Swords is that these guys are young knights who were doing swordplay, and the smirker, after he won, claimed the fight was a duel, in which case he claims their ancestral inheritance of their family land and business connection.
Strength, on the other hand, is associated with preventing interference and disruption, or handling it – resolving it, applying a solution for it. Strength is taming the monster; Five of Swords is the monster. Strength represents the solution to a situation, and is a person who solves problems, and Five of Swords intimidates and is the problem. So sometimes you see Strength and Five of Swords telling a story about a manager disciplining a thieving employee, or a thief being prosecuted, or even a risk manager preventing thievery or disruptions.
Five of Swords goes right alongside Strength as Strength’s antagonist (as the opposition whom Strength quashes or prevents – whom Strength shuts down or shuts up). But Strength can be the bossy controlling dame in the same way Five of Swords is the bossy controlling guy. This is a totally different setting: The shoe is on the other foot, so to speak. This domineering-woman scenario for Strength and Five of Swords is far less frequent, but it exists. The parties which/who are established in the Question, or the input of surrounding cards, will tell you the story.
Five of Swords is strongly the bad guy (or even criminal) who disrupts and interferes. It is the lead card for the wise-guy attitude, the smirking sneak, the thief, the bully. Cliches like these belong to Five of Swords: I did it my way; I show you who’s boss; what are you gonna do about it?, I take what I want – all of which are about someone born with the right-of-way.
Strength finesses a clash. The bully has picked on the martial artist here. Strength influences; Five of Swords intimidates. Strength overcomes without a struggle and without passion. Note Strength has her hands around the lion’s snout, as if she were petting the monster. Sometimes petting the monster is the best move. Five of Swords is dark energy. Five of Swords is the smirk, the strut, the desire to put down, humiliate, rip off and hurt. Strength wins: It means to overcome, no way around it. Without Strength around him, Five of Swords may or may not achieve that purpose. So in a fight between a Strength side and a Five of Swords side, Strength overcomes and wins the battle. Quite often Strength is the rightful owner of the turf, and Five of Swords is the intruder. (You may know that in nature the owner of the turf usually wins.)
Socially in the Five-of-Swords-and-Strength situations, we have a male and a female who are in a power struggle, or a man trying to show a woman who’s boss, or a woman making a man behave. Or any combination of those choices.
Strength is the lion tamer, you see, and this Strength card is about overcoming. Strength is the lead card for overcoming both external and internal conflicts and challenges (like bad habits). Strength is mostly ‘on the right side,’ evidenced by the symbols of spiritual power and purity of character in Strength’s illustration.
Ten of Wands is the innocent bystander in our Tarot spread today. Think of Ten of Wands being ‘eventually’ and ‘extremely.’ You see a man who has taken on the whole load, to do it all in one operation. His back is bent, and his progress is slow. But he makes it. He gets there. That is the main point in Ten of Wands: slow progress – the Turtle in Aesop’s fable. Ten of Wands
It’s slow going when you are doing it all in one load, once and for all. It’s slow progress, though: You take the whole thing upon yourself to get it done right. A task (or any process) taking a long time, and it being difficult, are what Ten of Wands is all about. Ten of Wands is keeping at it – a steady persistent consistent effort, ‘giving it all you’ve got.’ You see a fellow who strains under the load of all the wood, making slow progress. He makes it: ‘It’s worth it’ is part of Ten of Wands’ meaning.
Ten of Wands is also excess – often expressed as ‘maximum,’ ‘everything,’ or ‘a lot of,’ as well as ‘too much.’ You find Ten of Wands meaning words like ‘very’ and ‘so’ when it means ‘so much.’

Wheel of Fortune is hitting the jackpot. Today it frames the meanings of its companion Tarot cards. Wheel of Fortune is the best thing happening, and happening for the best: the optimum result. The picture illustrates chance and destiny. The roulette wheel has the proper name in Hebrew from the Bible that is translated ‘Jehovah’ in English, and its four letters are interspersed with the four letters of ‘rota,’ which refers to the wheel of fortune of myths, one of which is Apollo’s. The mysterious otherworldly critters, at least some of whom are unsavory, are on the rim of the wheel, and in the sky outside it. So Wheel of Fortune illustrates the idea that spirit forces affect events right where you live – divine ones and infernal ones.
In real Tarot practice, Wheel of Fortune is an opportunity; is a chance or opportunity to; is the chances of something … ‘most always something good. This is the card for lucky breaks, for miracles, for the big score; for the payoff; for something (or everything) wonderful – something really big, usually. It means fate and destiny – and even then, only the good stuff.

Two of Pentacles
Two of Pentacles is all about all kinds of motion. (I am not going into that because we are not using those meanings here. If you want to research that for a project you are doing, just type ‘Two of Pentacles Tarot Verbatim™’ and Google will bring it to you. You see a band around the balls he is juggling as he dances, and that is in the math sign for ‘infinitely repeating.’ So Two of Pentacles is a cycle – ongoing, repeating, continuing. It’s one of the many cards that translates ‘always’ too. It can mean the usual routine, too.
Then the tossing ships bring in ‘instability’ meanings. His outfit and the hat that looks like a dunce cap brings meanings about being goofy or silly. But today, we are pretty much just using the ‘on and on, over and over’ categories of his.
Eight of Cups
Eight of Cups throws a monkey wrench into Two of Pentacles regular movement: It means a disruption, to run off the road, to quit or put an end to something. It means walking out, dropping out, quitting, abruptly ceasing.
Eight of Cups is about a change of direction due to circumstances, with the intent of resuming the course after the detour. This picture shoes a pilgrim going around a mountain and river, with the full and the sliver moon both in the sky, to indicate an end and a beginning of, yes, a cycle. (Remember, Two of Pentacles refers to cycles and to continuing movement.)
Ten of Wands
Ten of Wands collects words that mean ‘a lot’ or ‘too much,’ and means those words literally and similar ones like: very, extremely, way too (whatever), overloaded, overwhelmed. Ten of Wands is also slow, due to the slow one-step-at-a-time progress the fellow is making. Ten of Wands is about difficulty, about that gradual uphill climb, about things that drag on and drag out, and tire tiresome and tiring.
Don’t pity Mr. Ten of Wands: He makes it, and the reason for his burden is that he decided, he chose, to do it all in one load to save, probably, time.

Two of Pentacles is one of the cards that commonly says ‘keeps,’ meaning keeps doing or keeps it up. Eight of Cups makes that say ‘keeps quitting.’ Two of Pentacles means ‘one after the other’ and Ten of Wands is difficulties. Two of Pentacles is instability and being erratic, and Eight of Cups runs off the road. So Two of Pentacles and Ten of Wands say ‘unstable too long.’
As you can see, there’s no action card for all this to refer to. That leaves a message that says something stops that has been going on a long time. It says a cycle is disrupted.
Two of Pentacles and Ten of Wands together have such similar meanings. Ten of Wands
Words and phrases for Ten of Wands grow out of this story: He decides to bring the most he can carry (of firewood?) in one load to save a trip, so he is overloaded, overwhelmed, and progressing slowly forward, but it’s worth it, and he’s going to make it. Ten of Wands is when you undertake something that strains you but your determination does pay off. Ten of Wands owns ‘everything’ and ‘all’ because of doing everything in one load, taking it all at once.
All aspects of the story feed Ten of Wands’ dictionary: ‘put up with it this long,’ it’s so hard to,’ ‘is slow,’ ‘everything,’ ‘after all that effort,’ ‘at last,’ ‘more than,’ ‘keep at it until,’ ‘a lot of,’ ‘too,’ ‘finally,’ ‘after all that,’ ‘too many,’ ‘always,’ so you can see the flexibility of Ten of Wands.
Judgment
You see Judgment Day, when an angel wakes the dead to new life with his horn. The coffins are pictured on the ocean or on water because a large body of water represents mass consciousness. The equal-sided cross on the angel’s flag represents where the spiritual and the physical aspects intersect.
The loud noise the horn makes, and the fact that horn is making a big announcement, puts Judgment into the speak/say/tell theme in Tarot Verbatim™. Judgment means any word about happening instantly or suddenly – and ‘sudden’ is one of Judgment’s favorite words. Often, Judgment says ‘suddenly realize’ or ‘sudden realization.’ The ‘sudden’ brings ‘surprise’ along with it because, obviously, it will be a surprise when this happens to a person. Judgment can mean ‘to blurt out,’ combining the ‘sudden’ with the ‘announcement.’
Judgment owns ‘new.’ New life, new perspective, new consciousness, newly aware, discover, epiphany, eureka, awakening … and so on. This is new spiritual life of course, so Judgment often involves spiritual life or spiritual discoveries.
Being alive again is a change, and ‘change’ is one of Judgment’s frequent translates.
Next, Judgment means ‘recovery’ and ‘going back to.’ The bodies are going back to their former, alive, state. The people are recovering from death.
Another meaning that comes with Judgment sometimes is ‘breakthrough’ or ‘breaks through.’
And Judgment is a public announcement, so you find it appearing for news, press releases, publicity, and notices.

Ten of Wands
You take on the whole job – all kinds of things to it – yourself. Or you carry it all in, in one load, bearing the backbreaking weight. Going through hard times one slow step at a time, it takes forever and is a constant effort. It’s slow going, but at long last, you overcome, you arrive. All these words belong to Ten of Wands through its illustration.
Ten of Wands can be about depression too, but not today: Today, we are overcoming; today we are free of whatever the problem is.
Strength
Mastery is what Strength talks about. Being ‘on top of things,’ the way she has her hands on the lion, making him purr when he came to roar. ‘Handle’ and ‘deal with,’ ‘solution’ and ‘overcome’ are Strength’s key words. Strength is a spiritual and esoteric card, about spiritual abilities – specifically about finessing physical circumstances through those spiritual abilities. Preventing conflict by being clearly and quietly able to handle it. Stifling external opposition and internal vices or resistance. Laying hands on, getting a grip, even petting – because she has her hands on that beast.
Strength will of course come up for a strong woman, or a controlling woman – even, under duress from neighbor cards, saying ‘bossy bitch.’
Fool
You have to get a ‘feel’ for Fool. Fool means ‘It doesn’t matter; nothing matters.’ It even means ‘nothing’ and ‘to not be’ or ‘to not be present.’ That comes from its being the 0, the zero, the cipher of the number system. It applies in so many ways that seem contradictory – like meaning both ‘free’ and ‘free of,’ when ‘free of’ can act as a negator (a negative word like ‘not’). Think ‘water off a duck’s back’ as Fool’s core meaning.
Fool’s most frequent application is variations of ‘I don’t know,’ which includes ‘forget.’ Fool has a lot of mental meanings, including being the subconscious. It often translates phrases like: no idea; than you can even think of; an open mind; without even knowing it; unacknowledged; don’t think.
Fool also has this ‘wide open’ vibe to it that applies as phrases like ‘any at all’ or ‘it’s not at all.’ They grow out of the ‘free’ concept most of the time.
Fool means ‘let it be.’ Often it says ‘just …’ – fill in the blank: just leaves, just let, if you just have, and so on. In a similar vein, Fool says ‘simply.’ Just do it; simply do it – but Fool doesn’t mean the ‘do’ – another card supplies that.
Fool means to be free of, which includes unexpected translations like ‘cleared of’ and ‘shed.’
Fool is on foot, traveling, so it’s one of the cards that means ‘leaving.’ Fool’s ‘leaving’ is about absenting oneself from a scene, moving on, rather than emphasizing whatever or whoever is being left.
Fool is lighthearted, and Fool is optimistic. Fool can be one of those people who are shallow and forever strays.
I could write a Fool book. I will someday. Here, we have not gone into the fact that a lot of Fool’s meanings arise from his being the 0, the zero, the cipher of the number system. These are the words Fool brings us today, mostly

Ten of Wands, as you can see from its picture, is a downer card. He has too much to bear, it’s ‘backbreaking,’ it’s slow going … even depressing. But today Fool and Strength remove its sting. For all Ten of Wands’ not-so-good meanings, Fool adds its dismissive phrases like: it’s not really; it doesn’t matter; forget it; don’t know about it; shed … ‘Oh, never mind’ stuff.
And For all of Ten of Wands’ not-so-good meanings, Strength adds its tone of mastery: ‘got it under control,’ got a grip on,’ handle it or even finesse it – or stifle, or put a damper on. Strength is strong enough to take on that load and make it purr like the predator she is petting.
Actually, Strength is famous for preventing a scene; Strength as a spiritual operator is wise to coincidence, so Strength can cut the confrontation off at the pass or nip it in the bud. Her dress and her halo announce her credentials to do that.
Always remember that Strength refers to internal issues, vices, and struggles, not just to potential external confrontations and scenes.
Strength and Fool together have some nifty things to say: It doesn’t matter (Fool) how long it takes (Ten of Wands). You can handle (Strength) anything at all (Fool). You have no idea (Fool) how strong you are (Strength). Don’t worry about that (Fool), you’ve got it under control (Strength). Ten of Wands
Ten of Wands owns ‘too much.’ Too much time, too weighty, exhausting, slow progress one step at a time (but he makes it). The man strains under a heavy load. Story is: doing it in one load, taking it all on your own shoulders.
Ten of Wands extends to emotionally too much, too. Ten of Wands is being depressed, being sick of it, enduring and putting up with.
Note this can be a very general filler-type card meaning future tenses and time phrases.
Four of Wands
Four of Wands – What you see here is a public display wedding of celebrities of the town. Four of Wands begins with the couple, and goes on to social groups of people all the way up to international level: couple, family, clan (relatives), neighborhood, city, state, county, region, country, world. The other marriage card, Ten of Cups, does pretty much the same thing (not quite as pronounced).
So Four of Wands today is about marriage, house and home because Queen of Cups is the good understanding wife. It mentions family matters once, and mentions organizations (country, company) twice.
Four of Wands is what people belong to.
Queen of Cups
This court card moonlights less than the others: Queen of Cups is usually a person, and the range is narrow there too. Queen of Cups is the nice girl, nice woman, the woman who understands (especially understands her man), and one of her virtues is being loyal. Queen of Cups is associated with: female, knowledge, and wife/his woman. This card sometimes translates as an opinion about something – often stated ‘she thinks.’
However, Queen of Cups does do double duty as the woman who knows all about him, the woman who is figuring something out, the woman with a mind of her own.

This is a domestic and social story, we see at a glance. First thing across the mind-screen is ‘She has been married for a long time.’ Because Four of Wands and Queen of Cups is a married woman. Four of Wands is the stable marriage, Queen of Cups is the loyal wife. Since Four of Wands is also any organization or group of people, and since Queen of Cups (Do you remember Sally Struthers playing Gloria in All in the Family, a/k/a The Archie Bunker Show? – she’s Queen of Cups there.) is loyal, she’s a loyal member of the company. Add Ten of Wands and make it ‘for a long time.’
Now I want to digress, go off-topic, and point out an example of how the Tarot action can be interpreted both ways, which is something to always keep in mind. (Remember the general that asked the oracle what would happen if he invaded Persia, and the oracle answered ‘a great empire will fall’ – but didn’t tell him that was his great empire?) These same cards also say ‘Those people are sick-up-to-here of that virtuous simpleminded dame.’
The next common idea you get from looking at our spread is ‘putting up with these people’ because Ten of Wands there is pretty tired of that load on his shoulders and Four of Wands is a group of people, beginning with the couple and expanding to world-level groups or organizations. Four of Wands is ‘these people’ because it is the leader of the ‘family’ theme as the stable, official, established family, and the ‘marriage cards’ all extend to apply to groups of people in Tarot Verbatim™. (Ten of Cups is the happy family and the good people; Ten of Pentacles in Tarot Verbatim is the dysfunctional family or human group.) Four of Wands can translate simply ‘us’ or ‘them’ at times – watch for that.
So the next thing, and it’s not as obvious, is taking the Four of Wands group theme (bunch of people theme) and applying it to our goodnatured well-intentioned Sally Struthers lady to make ‘nice girls’ (plural number of people), or ‘all the women in the family’ or she’s one of the good people,’ and so on. Four of Wands is about belonging to a category or group of people.
Another obvious theme, combining our three cards in pairs, is Ten of Wands being ‘too much’ (or too anything) and Queen of Cups being the nice lady: The lady is too nice.
Those are the main elements of our stories today, and stories is what we have today.
