………………….……………………     Both Three of Cups and Three of Wands are making money, and Three of Cups is sharing it. Six of Wands is about sharing too, but, there’s always something hidden in Six of Wands, which often is playing a role, acting as if, faking it, putting one’s best foot forward, pretending, going along with, and getting people or someone to go along with. Six of Wands can be the mooch too, or the stockbroker that gets a cut when you make money but doesn’t share your losses from his or her advice. But sharing happiness is just as much what today is about as sharing money – more-so, even. The main message today is ‘face,’ that it pays to make the best of it, to keep as tony an image as we can, and even to dress the part we look forward to playing. We are using the very best of Six of Wands’ meanings because he is in such good company today, on his very best behavior.

…………………………..     Six of Wands‘ pure meaning is about betrayal and about winning the battle and losing the cause. It is about a victory, but always one that isn’t what it seems. ‘Agenda’ is a key word for this card in Rider Waite. It can represent someone ‘out to get you.’ Pictured is King Richard III’s kidnap by Arabs he was fighting, covertly arranged by the next in line for England’s throne. This card can warn you of a false friend, as Two of Cups can. In application, the card does not have to be about that dark a story, of course. In application, the emphasis is usually on persuasion (getting someone to go along with something, or someone getting you to go along with something), pretense (acting the part, role, face, fitting in with the group), and parasitic people(taking advantage, taking the credit, mooching – which is sharing in others’ or another’s income and assets unfairly – sucking up or riding the coat tails of a more enterprising person, being a con artist even. Look at the expression on the horse’s face. Does it remind you of the horse in Sun, who has an obvious agenda of his or her own?

…………………………..       Three of Cups is sharing with people you can and do trust. The presence of this card takes the sting out of Six of Wands – it negates the ‘double-cross’ aspects of Six of Wands, and brings out its ‘fitting in and being a part of the team’ aspects. Being able to make these distinctions is part of expertise in Tarot reading. Three of Cups are fashionable women who team up to do things together … the girl gang, the girlfriends. It is also investors (doesn’t have to be female ones) who jointly put money into an enterprise and share the profit. This is both a business and a social card, like Three of Pentacles is. Both Three of Cups and Three of Pentacles very often speak of a group of three people: watch for that. You can count on Three of Cups to not have a dark side, even when it is in bad company.

An anchor card is one that has few and well-defined meanings so that you look where it is in the spread and can unravel the message quickly. Three of Wands’ picture says it all: Your ship is coming in. It says ‘It’s profitable’ and ‘making a profit.’ It says that, whatever you are asking about, its future is assured. It says you have something to look forward to. Fake it (Six of Wands) until you make it (Three of Cups as prosperity and enjoying life). Act like (Six of Wands) you already have the good life (Three of Cups). LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

Six of Wands    …….. Six of Wands shows a victory wreath on a pole, and a horseman wearing the leaves of victory upon his head. The horse is covered and maybe has ‘a look on his face.’ Many readers adopt this as a victory card, just as they adopt Two of Cups as a love card. But both of these cards have a pronounced dark side in Tarot Verbatim™, especially this Six of Wands one. Why? The story is the abduction of King Richard III who was captive of Arabs all his life as a result of pursuing them in a battle he won, all of which was arranged by someone who wanted to be king in his place – and was. So Six of Wands involves an agenda and/or a pretense. The pretense can be simply fitting in, playing your role, going along with other people’s roles, face, persuading or enticing people to agree with your position, or going along with them and agreeing with theirs.

Three of Cups   …………. Three of Cups is sharing, camaraderie, girlfriends, making a profit, pooling money and/or resources to accomplish something together and splitting the proceeds afterward, and having a good time, including dating and partying. You see three women toasting their successful harvest together, obviously close friends.

Three of Wands    …………. Three of Wands is one of the very simplest cards in Rider Waite. You see a well-dressed man watching the ships come in, waiting. (Yes, that’s supposed to be a body of water, not a desert – printer’s error that they never correct, same as you see on the horn in Judgment, where the color of the skin invades the lips and the mouthpiece part of the horn.) So Three of Wands is income, profit, money coming in, waiting, and a good future. It also simply refers to the future and makes a nearby verb future tense.

Well, bookkeeper not only embezzled a third of my income or so, he set up a disaster we are narrowly averting. Part of the fiasco is having spent for five years nearly $400 a month for the phone bills of himself, his ex-wife, and God-knows-who else, so I killed my main business telephone number, 208 993-1657, and replaced it with 208 993-1897. And that phone mysteriously fails daily: it just dies and has to be revived by techs (hacking, yes). So just when I need extra funds to bail out the boat he tried to sink, the phone puts a dent in income. You can help – just keep trying when you call.

Four of Pentacles – He sits outside of town (something to hide, a secret) staring straight ahead, alone (He doesn’t want to talk about this, it’s private), holding onto money for dear life (he’s near broke, is stingy or cheap, is on a budget), hugging himself (feeling inadequate, in need of comfort). The emphasis in Four of Pentacles is internal life (and therefore internal organs), inadequacy, and deep private feelings – the ‘deep down inside’ phrase. He is hunkered down, doesn’t want to hear something, is laying low, sulking, possibly cringing in cowardice, is inferior in some position or way. Deep feelings are featured. Three of Wands – Here’s an anchor card: one you look to early on because it has few and reliable meanings that also are common in sentences. Three of Wands is: (1) money and income; (2) coming to; (3) continuing steadily; (4) future and future tenses. It translates ‘brings’ as in ‘brings on’ as part of the ‘coming to’ set of meanings.

And that’s it.

Hanged Man – Hanged Man is getting the idea. You can see his head all lit up. It’s some kind of new perspective, or at least some big idea, because he is upside-down. The illustration reflects the feeling you get of the world being upside-down or topsy-turvy when your world-view shifts without giving you time to adjust.

Hanged Man applies to two main types of these shifts. One is in what we call the ‘real world,’ and it includes those connecting-the-dots realizations that we express with language like these: Why didn’t I think of that?; getting it; it strikes me that; so that’s it!; bright idea; who’d-a-thunk-it; and that flash realization of something we have suppressed because we did not want to recognize it – the ‘ring-around-the-collar’ moment, or the finally being told what you knew all along about a betrayal but were hiding it from yourself. The other involves insight, hunches and premonitions, and actual enlightenment when it occurs in one big dump instead of being drip-fed. These are otherworldly experiences. Hanged Man is also psychic, and translates that word.

Hanged Man is also a card-carrying member of the ‘know’ Tarot tribe. Here, you find it often translating ‘know’ and ‘understand’ and ‘see’ and ‘getting the idea.’ Along this line today, Hanged Man translates ‘mental’ and ‘makes sense’ and ‘bright idea.’

Eight of Pentacles – The phrase ‘workaday world’ epitomizes Eight of Pentacles. Ain’t nothin’ esoteric about our Eight of Pentacles! You can tell by looking this is the card for work, job, employment, labor. It also means ordinary, routine, and mundane.

Eight of Pentacles is also the Tarot card for hammering away at it – for keeping at it, for doing the same thing or the same action (repetitive motion) over and over, one after another, every time. Four of Wands – A royal or noble wedding is a public occasion. This is the basis that holds the main applications of Four of Wands together. (That’s what the illustration is, F. Y. I.)

So first you have the couple, marrying, marriage, the home and home life.

.

Then you have Establishment stuff about groups of people: group, company, institution, mass, people, the public, everybody, everyone, all of us, and any city, county, neighborhood, district, or country.

.

Along the same vein, you also have the feeling of belonging or unity or ‘being one of them,’ or even ‘us.’ Phrases like these: to belong, the same with them, with them, hanging together with these people, we have a consensus, my homies, one of them.

.

Not today, but Four of Wands is also the ruling class whether in a positive sense or not.

Hanged Man – The picture reflects a number of myths, in quite a few different cultures, in which the leading character hangs himself for three days on a tree and sacrifices a body function or body part in return for the god(s) giving him ‘wisdom,’ which refers to magic powers and psychic awareness. (Hanged Man translates ‘sacrifice’ in some Tarot systems, but not in Tarot Verbatim™.)

The main words and phrases Hanged Man contributes in Tarot Verbatim™ refer to thinking, feeling, knowing, awareness, idea, opinion in a very ordinary way.

The next level of that concept refers to consciousness, psychic awareness, psychic impression, wavelength, catching on, inspiration, foreseeing, and likeminded consensus (mass consciousness).

A massive thought strikes our hero in Hanged Man – the onrush of all the dots simultaneously connecting up without a person’s permission: Boom. The experience is powerful and sudden, and that’s what sometimes happens in spiritual life. This kind of experience gives Hanged Man words like ‘urge’ and ‘intense.’ It also brings words about instinct.

Three of Wands – This is one of the easiest cards to remember its meanings and how to apply it. A merchant is waiting for his ships to come in with his profit, and he knows the money (and good things, cargo) are coming because he is looking straight at the ship. (Yes, the water is yellow. There are a number of yellow printer’s errors in Rider Waite that it will never correct.)

So Three of Wands main meanings are: coming; the future; continuing and in process (because the ship is in transit); profit or money coming in. Good things are coming, are headed this way: That is the usual contribution of Three of Wands in most spreads.

Three of Wands puts surrounding cards into future tense. Sometimes that is all it does – so watch for that. Today’s ‘future’ meanings are: foresee; I’m gonna.

Hanged Man and Three of Wands say ‘ seeing ( Hanged Man) the future ( Three of Wands).’ They also refer to a continuing, ongoing, awareness. Three of Wands is continuing, is a continuing process; Hanged Man is awareness.

Four of Wands and Hanged Man say ‘ mass consciousness’ ( Hanged Man is consciousness, and Four of Wands is a group of people) or ‘ an intense feeling of belonging, feeling like family.’ ( Hanged Man is intense and is also simply ‘ feeling.’ Four of Wands is belonging to a group, and also means family.) Four of Wands and Hanged Man also say ‘ people who think,’ who are likeminded. Four of Wands is ‘ people,’ and Hanged Man is the ‘ think’ part of it.

Four of Wands and Three of Wands refer to the future ( Three of Wands) of the group ( Four of Wands), or to a company ( Four of Wands) that continues to be, or that will be, prosperous. Three of Wands means the ‘ continues to be,’ and also means ‘ will be,’ and also means ‘ prosperous’ or profitable. Remember that you can use more than one meaning of a card in a spread … sometimes even a negative card, or a future card, but that’s a little tricky.

This spread can simply say ‘You will understand them.’ Three of Wands is ‘ will,’ the future. Hanged Man understands. Four of Wands is simply ‘ them,’ the group of people.

Three of Wands means both continuing and coming toward, so it can also translate ‘ always’ in the sense of always continuing, always coming. If the sentence assumes that something smoothly keeps being true, keeps happening, or keeps ‘whatever,’ Three of Wands applies. And you also find this distinction about ‘keeping’ in Eight of Pentacles, where his hammer blows one after the other also suggest an ongoing process, continuing.

Four of Wands and Three of Wands refer to the future (Three of Wands) of the group (Four of Wands), or to a company (Four of Wands) that continues to be, or that will be, prosperous. Three of Wands means the ‘continues to be,’ and also means ‘will be,’ and also means ‘prosperous’ or profitable. Remember that you can use more than one meaning of a card in a spread … sometimes even a negative card, or a future card, but that’s a little tricky.

Three of Wands – Three of Wands shows a man waiting for his ship with his profit, his income, to come into the harbor. So waiting, profit, income, coming, and the concept of ‘ship coming in’ belong principally to Three of Wands. As clear and convincing as these words, are, however, Three of Wands’ meat-and-potatoes meanings are about the future. Our merchant standing on the hill is looking at the (good) future, and knows what’s going to be.

Three of Wands translates all sorts of future words most of the time it appears: going to be, will, going to, is getting, from now on, what’s ahead, will always be, what’s going to happen. Three of Wands goes so far as to bestow future tense as other cards’ verbs, which sometimes puts Three of Wands ‘underwater’ – not having a word of its very own – in your sentences. Often, though, it just adds the ‘will.’

It’s not just the future Three of Wands talks about, however: It also means to continue, continuing, continual, steady, and other synonyms for ‘continue.’ And in this phase of its work, Three of Wands creates the gerund form of words, whether of its own words, or that of other cards. The gerund form is the ‘–ing’ form, and of course the ‘–ing’ form indicates continuing action. It is the difference between ‘I catch on’ or ‘I caught on’ and ‘I am catching on.’

Three of Wands is an anchor card, one of the best. An anchor card has few and well-defined meanings so that you look at it in the spread and quickly get what it’s saying.

Hanged Man – This curious illustration reflects some myths in which the lead character hangs himself on a tree for three days and sacrifices a body part for ‘wisdom,’ by which is meant psychic or magic powers. See the energy halo around the fellow’s head? – his brain is afire with inspiration, and he is seeing things in a different light (upside-down). You have heard of ‘hair on fire’ as a term for this sort of feeling.
