Devil – Ten of Cups – World

….. …….……      …...…… Ten of Cups is the life of belonging; World is the solitary life. Both of these cards are about being superior or ‘good’ people.

In Ten of Cups, the ‘one big happy family’ vibe is apparent, and the ‘we are the good people in the good neighborhood’ vibe is less apparent but it’s there to be seen.

World, in her illustration, is clearly doing her own thing (dancing with her wands, nude … different drummer, you know?) and is also clearly shutting out – and being ignored by – elements she chooses not to associate with. That wreath is a wall (refers to the magic circle, actually) that encloses her and shuts out others … and Ten of Cups is ‘others.’ You can think of the wreath-wall as being in a bubble of your own making, living clear of what you choose not to associate with, being in a world of your own. And the wreath-wall also applies in the other direction of being shut out. [Always remember: The story or the action in Tarot cards applies from the perspective of each of the characters in the story.]

The other card breaks this concept into different stories, because the other card is Devil – difficulties, the downside or dark side … ‘bad.’ Devil is problems; World is no problems allowed, and Ten of Cups is the people who are happy together in a problem-free zone of their own (gated community type thing).

So our stories today are about shutting out disruptive elements, and keeping our own dark side under wraps. We also talk about privacy, ourselves being excluded from a circle, and being alone in the crowd.

….. …….…… ….Devil and Ten of Cups together say what Ten of Pentacles says by itself: people who have a problem or people who are a problem. Devil often simply translates ‘bad.’ Ten of Cups often simply translates ‘people’ or ‘everybody,’ and it’s a house or neighborhood as well. So you can see: bad neighborhood, decrepit or fixer-upper house, bad people. One step farther, and you have everybody’s bad side.

….. …….…… ….Devil and World emphasize privacy – not associating with what would disrupt your peace and quiet. Shutting out unpleasant things, living in a gated community or a gated psyche … and just not acknowledging the problems, not dealing with them. Devil and World can describe a sheltered life.

Ten of Cups and World is not wanting to get married and live happily after; is being alone in the crowd; is privacy from the family and from others; is feeling superior to the normal folks. It also applies to the superior people as a group (seldom). Isolating yourself from other people, or being isolated. Today, with Devil meaning sickness and contagion, Ten of Cups and World are staying home when you are sick, to not spread the crud.

Devil………. The main point of Devil is attachment. Devil’s illustration says that our attachment to our alter ego or dark side is voluntary: The chains there are loose. Devil is the downside or the dark side of anything – internal or external. The illustration is about attachment to our vices, to whatever holds us back or lowers our consciousness … bad habits, addictions. Devil represents problems, fault and faults, difficulties, handicaps, things nasty, ugly, hate and hated, dislike, rude, disagreeable, perverted, mean or dysfunctional. Feeling bad, hurt feelings, guilt and remorse, sin and condemnation. Disrepair, unpleasant situation, the worst people, the hard part. Being mad, sickness, infection, being in pain, and hating. Mistakes. Devil is sexual things too, especially the problematical sides of sex, so it can be sex problems of any sort, lust, bondage, etc. But, in the right company, Devil is down-and-dirty good sex too.

However, Devil sometimes just means ‘physical,’ as, strangely, Hierophant the Pope does as well. Devil can mean physical attachment, like the attachment of a trailer hitch, or bolts holding the wheel of a vehicle on. The chains bring this aspect out. Even something paper-clipped or stapled together, or ‘attachments to the transcript’ or other document in court.

Devil can mean obligation and obliged too. It can say ‘in spite of.’ It can mean disordered or dirty or grimy.

The torch being held the wrong way translates ‘wrong use of force,’ one of Devil’s traditional meanings that is almost never expressed. Burned by your own fire. Using your energy self-destructively. But Devil, of course, refers to force, brutality and brutish behavior – all the way to torture, which doesn’t concern us today.

Ten of Cups ……….. We get together with like-minded upbeat people we are related to – either as actual family or as a circle. This Rider Waite Tarot card is one of the positive (happy) marriage cards. Ten of Cups is about being happy, being together, and being good people, being married, having children, conforming to the community and being in good standing – respectable. Ten of Cups is also the public. Ten of Cups is enjoying life together, being happy, camaraderie, unity. Successful living and the successful life through happy relationships.

World…….World has no problems. A wreath-wall separates a nude lady from unsavory-looking critters. World represents a level of spiritual maturity. World says when you can handle a problem, the problem isn’t yours anymore, it’s outside of you. You can think ‘Been there, done that’ about world because the concept here is being a master, being at the level no one wants to challenge you.

Not being interested in. Being unapproachable. Repelling sickness by being well (immune system, and mental health). Shutting out undesirable influences, and minding your own business as far as influencing anyone … or anything … else goes.

World is also about being excluded, as well as excluding. It can be about the ‘glass ceiling,’ for instance, or not being allowed in the clubhouse. World has a ‘rejection’ theme to it that can apply broadly.

Then again, World is a shapely woman, a dancing girl (even cage dancing – the wreath as the cage!), a trophy woman (like Empress). See the Tarot territory as to whether this is the slice of World that applies to your spread.

You can keep to yourself and be private, and you can just ignore scenes you don’t want to be part of. Not getting involved in other people’s downside is a strategy for being happy yourself. ‘Ignore the problems and live happily ever after’ is a slogan like ‘Damn the torpedoes; full speed ahead.’
