Guidance |
What unites us is what we have in common, but part of what we have in common antagonizes us. What we hate most in people is the echo of what we know (upfront or down under) is wrong with, or about, us. A really good marriage is one where differences are aired before their pressure blows the pot up. That applies to neighborhoods too. Of course, what we have in common that keeps us together is not always the good things that are fit to print that we have in common. Sometimes having the same susceptibilities, the same weakness, is a bond for a sound relationship.

This is an easy card. The easiest part is applying it to any kind of any person or thing legal: courts, proceedings, judges, lawyers, police, courthouses, lawsuits, etc. Watch for justice processes without the court too – words like ‘resolving.’
Then expand the word ‘right’ in its many forms, so you get the right place, the right kind, so right, have rights, it’s all right, realistic, being right, it’s okay.
Justice is the way things should be: ‘Should’ is a key word for Justice. So you have normal, straight, straighten out, deserve, belongs there.

Rider-Waite uses the Christian devil; not all decks do. In the Marseilles deck, Devil is more like the mischievous god Loki in the Norse pantheon. Rider Waite’s childhood was medieval Europe where the Roman Catholic church’s condemnation could be fatal to a person. This is one of the cards designed to deflect the accusation that Tarot is the devil’s work, an accusation some Christians still level at Tarot, but they don’t kill you for it anymore. So Devil here is obviously meant to be a bad-guy Tarot card. It’s one of the cards, of course, for actual demons and black magic: See the black magic symbols here.
Devil is one of the cards with the most meanings. Save him for last; the other ones in your spread will be more obvious.
First, the picture. Devil is one of three cards that shows a couple, with something above and between them that is influencing them spiritually: Devil, Lovers, Two of Cups. Especially Devil and Lovers are about connection. Devil is about the influence of vice and habit; Lovers has the guardian angel; Two of Cups has the caduceus representing a conflicting undeclared interest of a third party which could be a spirit or spell.
So Devil represents the influence of humans’ lower self. Its underlying core meaning is that it’s your susceptibility to whatever the offending element is that connects you to it. This idea is represented by the loose chains around the couple’s necks while they are standing free. So Devil infers that your problem is your choice.
Here, first, are the neutral to not-so-bad Devil words and phrases: Attachment, a bond, even a connection – because of the chains. A bond expands to include ‘obligation’ and ‘obliged.’
The word ‘physical’ also belongs to Devil, especially ‘physical attachment’ or ‘physically attached,’ which could refer to a trailer hitch or stapled papers. ‘Stuck’ sometimes brings up Devil but is more likely to call forth Eight of Swords.
A habit can be a limiting bond. Devil can say ‘habit’ as well as refer to a bad habit like an addiction. Key is the bond.
Other fairly innocuous words Devil may give your sentence are: ugly; deformed; sick (including mentally sick), pain, suffering, depression and other feelings. ‘Deformed’ can refer to a machine part, not just your nose.
Now for the meat-and-potatoes Devil applications, many of which are shared with Moon: Think ‘wrong.’ It means that, and many of the other words it means are close by that. The wrong anything, like Devil-Ace of Pentacles is the wrong road.
Here are most of Devil’s meanings that grow one way or the other out of ‘wrong’: it’s immoral; a criminal; trouble; a problem; a terrible problem; differences or disagreements; a bad whatever; having a bad time of it; hates, what we are mad about; mad; ruins; condemned; fault and faults; taking the brunt of it; sexual perversion.
Lastly, occasionally, Devil represents negative parts of words like ‘mal’ as in malicious and ‘ill’ as in illegal.

Married with children, in a good neighborhood, and happy. You can relax now, it’s me, Ten of Cups. Ten of Cups is Us, is the good people. It’s marriage, being married, the spouse, happily ever after, and family. It’s even the house. You can almost think of it as Devil in reverse.
Ten of Cups often simply means ‘people’ and represents any size and any type of group of humans who have anything good in common. It also represents their getting together, or a get-together like a family reunion.
Ten of Cups is being in agreement, and is enjoying life. It says ‘one big happy family.’
Now Without The Pictures |
Legal marriage and the devil, said I when I put these three on the table, ‘What am I going to do with this?’ As you can see, when I got into it, I did a lot with it.
The simplest story is the bad guy, Devil, straightens out, Justice, and lives happily ever after with Us.
The miscreant (bad guy) gets what he deserves with Justice, of course. But the good people (Ten of Cups) suffer (Devil) too. And someone who is sick or suffering becomes normal (Justice). We also come to agreement (Ten of Cups) about our disagreements (Devil). We are all happy in our rundown or bad neighborhood. On the other hand, I just hate (Devil) all those straight (Justice) well-adjusted people (Ten of Cups) because I’m perfectly happy (Ten of Cups) with my faults (Devil).
So we have stories galore today. Devil is in very good company, and he needs that.

Guidance |
Life for constructive people can be like being the only sober one at a drunken party. Sometimes the drunks are your relatives, or even friends, and they get their share of your good life. Sometimes what your friends share with you is their vices. But influence is a two-way avenue, so sometimes the good apple in the rotten barrel is a missionary in excellent disguise.

You affect people just by existing, and the effect goes both ways. Just by being yourself, imitators sprout up. People influence you without your permission, and you can return the favor with or without any intention to do so. People you have not opened the door to walk into your house and mess it up. Then, having seen yours so clean, they go home and straighten up. But you’re not there to see that, of course: You will never know what-all you cause in other people’s doings.

Three of Cups is the all-for-one-and-one-for-all Three Musketeers type camaraderie. It’s friends who trust one another, share freely, and do things together – even do moneymaking things together. Girlfriends, especially. Three of Cups is good company and good times and good people. The Good Apples, we call them here. Three of Cups is one of the success theme cards too. It’s also a party and dating theme card. Three of Cups is girls, gals, women and dames.

![]()
People who are problems or people who have problems’ is my private title for Ten of Pentacles. That’s in Tarot Verbatim™ and no other system (so far). People who hurt because of other people. Scenes. Difficulties. Married wrong. A family ‘discussion’ with the Lord and Master is pictured, who lays hands on the greyhounds as Son passes on to Wife the decree – probably to produce another subject for Grandpa’s legacy, as the current subject is still of age to squall and clutch at Wife’s dress as she pleas with hubby, who stares off in another direction as if she weren’t there. Have you been part of this scene?
So Ten of Pentacles is people trouble, family trouble, those people, the unfriendlies, the zombies and the drones, the obnoxious underclass and the obnoxious overclass, the politicians and the mob, the ghetto and the corporate boardroom – the whole bad world neighborhood.
Ten of Pentacles sometimes just translates ‘family,’ and often appears for workplace woes – dysfunctional types that act the same as bad family.

![]()
Several Rider Waite cards are designed to deflect condemnation from the all-powerful Roman Catholic powers-that-be upon users of the deck. The church’s penalty for ‘the work of the devil’ was death (and would still be). In other decks, Devil isn’t The Horned One.
Devil means hate and enmity, wrong, and bad and worst, and horrible … you name it. It is criminal and brutal, and it is force.
Devil is also the philosophical notion that your vices are voluntary, whatever you are bound to is undoable – evidenced by the loose chains.
Devil in ordinary applications means attachment and obligation very commonly.
Devil is sickness and hurt, pain and suffering, perversion and derangement – and just plain filth and dirt.
Now Without The Pictures |
First, parenthetically, note that all three cards show groups of people, so plural pronouns are going to predominate.
Ten of Pentacles and Devil are old (disagreeable) friends who have so much in common, none of it good. Ten of Pentacles in Tarot Verbatim™ is the dysfunctional, screwed-up, lowlife crowd. It represents infighting, rivalries, factions, bad family life, bad neighborhood, gangsters and politicians, the nasty boardroom rich and the nasty ghetto poor, and bad neighbors … and all that goes along with those things. These two cards say ‘bad company’ and ‘sick people’ and ‘family hate.’
Devil, of course, represents anything bad or worse, being stuck, suffering and hurt and harm, problems and prison, and simply being disagreeable.
So, Three of Cups, what are nice girls like you doing in a bad place like this? After all, there’s no action card to connect you to here. Well, Three of Cups isn’t going to be much of a people card … the ladies just don’t fit in very well. So Three of Cups’ sharing meanings come to the forefront (what we have in common), and the ones about friends, being good people or productive people, good times, and being well off (‘making it’).
What we observe here is: People who are not in the same world, the same circle, affect and influence one another. Directly, or indirectly. Secondhand or third-hand. Your style of behaving rubs off on someone you don’t even know … or would like. You decide to mend one of your ways when you see it displayed badly on someone across the street. Your parents are such bad examples that you are a very straight arrow. You go to meetings about something you don’t subscribe to, but some of their ideas you adopt for your own.

Guidance |
Loyal to a fault we say: loyal to the company; loyal to the party; loyal to the family or the spouse. She defends her clan against outsiders‘ criticisms even as in private she may say ‘It’s all your fault.’ Doing everything for family is her vice. There are worse vices, of course, but for all her loyalty she is the black sheep of the family – is resented.

Rider Waite Tarot has the medieval myth-style Christian devil, but other decks (such as Marseilles) have a different perspective on Number 15, Devil. So Rider Waite’s Devil meanings tend toward the dark side, the downside, even the satanic side (what with the symbols of it so apparent). In today’s context, the middle-of-the-road unpleasant meanings are called upon. (Google ‘Devil Tarot Verbatim’ for a comprehensive view of this card.)
The other two cards are specifically about family or other group life, so Devil today represents trouble in those places, and people who are trouble in those places.
You also find the drinking man or addicted man, the weak man, the fellow who whines or is passive-aggressive.
Here are some of the words for people problems for Devil today: mean, vice, hates, ill repute, wrong, rudest, black sheep, militant, addiction, in a bad way.
And here are some of the words for a bad situation for Devil today: biggest obstacle, disabled, distressed, very troubled, sick.
Some general words Devil brings us today are: involuntary, big mistake, resented, ugly.

Think of her as the Italian matriarch (wife of Italian Stallion, King of Pentacles), and you can pin most of her meanings. This Tarot card translates words like these, as a matter of fact: woman, mama, women’s, married woman, matriarch. Queen of Pentacles is typically a married woman who is family oriented – loyal and supportive. Queen of Pentacles backs her man, often as his partner in his business. Like Queen of Cups, Queen of Pentacles is loyal to her man – but Queen of Pentacles is more savvy, more worldly.
Queen of Pentacles can have the same relationship to her organizations as to her family: the loyalty, the backing, the devotion. She (like Queen of Wands) is often the manager, the one who runs some show.
Queen of Pentacles is associated with money as someone who handles it, who gives generously, who supports (family, cause, charity, anything). This is how she gets to be a bookkeeper (like High Priestess, who has a book in her lap).
Devil brings out the downside of Queen of Pentacles: Her vice is being possessive, taking too much care (fussing over her man usually), and being foully loyal – the ‘my kid can do no wrong’ mama.

The picture here is the public wedding ceremony, so Four of Wands is all about marriage, being a couple, family, and marrying. It will translate ‘spouse’ which of course amounts to ‘husband’ or ‘wife,’ even while it also can mean ‘husband and wife.’
All the marriage cards in Tarot Verbatim do double duty as ‘house’ cards and ‘organization’ cards. So Four of Wands can be a public building (it’s a public official wedding we are looking at here, after all) or dwelling, and Four of Wands can be the Establishment – any level of government agency or territory (city, county, nation, international entity, court house, etc.).
Four of Wands is leaders of a community, the respectable people, the elite, and can be rich people per se.
As an organization, watch for Four of Wands to represent a hospital or treatment center, more than the other marriage/family/house/organization cards do – especially if there’s a card that means sickness modifying it (Devil).
Now Without The Pictures |
Queen of Pentacles is the female head of family, and the manager of a company. Four of Wands is the family or the company. She is loyal, often too loyal (or too loyal for her own good – a devoted woman like Queen of Cups). Both Queen of Pentacles and Four of Wands are Establishment types, more likely to appear in a story about respectable people.
Devil therefore today is going to represent mainly ‘trouble in paradise.’ It is about the troubled family, the distressed property the lady puts money into, personal problems like vice, rudeness, the black sheep, militant attitude, addiction, disability, sickness, and a big mistake. It is an obstacle, something hated (or someone who hates), bad reputation (‘ill repute’), being wrong, a militant attitude.
Devil is a very general card. Look at it last because it can mean just about anything unpleasant. And its not-unpleasant meanings (which we don’t use here) are just as general. It can mean ‘physical,’ and it can mean ‘attachment,’ which may turn out to be a paper clip!
So we have stories about family and community life.

Guidance |
Loyal to a fault we say: loyal to the company; loyal to the party; loyal to the family or the spouse. She defends her clan against outsiders’ criticisms even as in private she may say ‘It’s all your fault.’ Doing everything for family is her vice. There are worse vices, of course, but for all her loyalty she is the black sheep of the family – is resented.

Today we demonstrate how you (yes, you) can read Tarot (at least Rider Waite Tarot in Tarot Verbatim) as a dialog; you and Tarot in a conversation. You can learn to do that piecemeal right here free, or you can organize and speed it up by buying the Tarot Email Training which you will find under the green ‘Get Them Now’ bar. Or you can just enjoy how it’s done here. We have a good true story.
The ‘Shortcut!’ navigation tab above will allow you to purchase Emily’s interpretation of your three-card spread, for less than nine dollars. It is especially for when you are doing your own cards and wonder. (It is not a reading on a question. You enter three cards, the TOPIC, and payment.)
Three examples (three questions) from one person of Email Reading are a study in going ahead and (carefully) answering when the material seems contradictory. They are also an example of why my instructions to Email buyers are that it’s better to say that someone in a love story is married (especially, not to the love interest). In the questions of this reading, I do not know that, so I read in the alternative – meaning, I say it means this, or that, or that. It turns out that it all does make sense to Querant, who explains that it’s all true ….
Then – third question – she asks what conflicted Love Interest is going to do: action in the real world. And this is a demonstration of how … just because someone is in a dither about something … doesn’t rule out their getting on with it decisively.
My question is: What does he feel for me? What will he will do regarding to me in next 3 months?

Guidance |
Vulnerabilities. We all have them. We all arm ourselves against the pitfalls, against our favorite sins and slip-ups. There’s the enemy within and the enemy without – whatever sets us off or triggers wanting something we don’t want to want. Today we look at moments our wall of defense is about to be breached, and the ways we counter the impending breach. Our guard goes up to keep us out of the red zone. We detach and we abort course. That is today’s story anyway.

Things I have no connection to: I abandon my vice.
Don’t let it get to you: It’s not your problem.
Drop out, shut it out – it’s bad for you.
Prevent trouble from getting to you – just disappear.
Duck out, and shut out, a rude person.
I am being the immovable object that repels the force.
A hardened aura deflects harm.
This is so wrong, so I put up a wall of defense and exit the scene.
Nothing ruffles her feathers because she avoids attachments.
Prevent trouble by not acknowledging trouble.
I shall drop out, and not have to deal with the damned harassment.
I don’t get sick anymore: My immune system keeps that at bay.
People go bad and are not around here anymore.
I won’t let my bad side get to me anymore.
You are not really obligated, so don’t let that interfere with you.
Keep yourself out of that scene – avoid a bad situation.
Don’t let the hurt get to you: Don’t go there.
He has gone bad, and I have nothing to do with him.
The way to be invulnerable is to abandon your vulnerabilities.

I have nothing in common with my drinking buddies anymore.
He goes totally out of his way for such a desirable woman.
I fall off the wagon, then steel myself against the addiction.
Making an exception to total abstinence is a mistake.
I drop my guard, and encounter an obstacle.
All of a sudden, I drop my guard and am in a funk.
Synopsis |
Nothing ruffles her feathers; she doesn’t get attached. For the rest of us, we don’t let the hurt get to us: We just don’t go there. But all of a sudden, I drop my guard and I’m in a funk. Drop out, shut it out, it’s bad for you, or be the immovable object that repels the force. It seems the only way to be invulnerable is to never get on that wagon we might fall off of – to never attach in the first place.

You see a shapely woman dancing with wands (which symbolize power and connection to ‘out there’), nude, a thick wreath around her which is a circle of protection, a barrier. World has a very broad spectrum via this impenetrable-barrier concept. Examples of these meanings are: World is a superior person or VIP who is unreachable, a person ‘you can’t get through to’ for whatever reason, the good-looking gal who isn’t interested in a fellow, an eccentric in a world of his own, birth control, an area that is protected from assault or from contamination, shut out, bodyguards, hermetic seal against air or germs, a seal against intrusion of water such as a sea wall, even a pipe that contains water securely. As a dancer, World is a performer too. World means protection, obviously.
World illustrates the fact that if you can handle a threat, that situation is not going to confront you – that trouble avoids people who are ready for it. Deterrence, in a word. Bullies are cowards, whether they have bodies or not, and bullies are expert at spotting someone who wouldn’t mind tussling with them.

He is going out of his way, detouring around the river and hills that are in the way on his foot journey. The full and sliver moons indicate beginning and ending, which reiterates the theme of ‘over with before it begins’ and disruption. Our pilgrim is expected to get back on course after this detour. Eight of Cups is aborting course in some way – even running off the road, or getting lost, or vanishing. Eight of Cups is AWOL, dropping out, unfinished, abandoning, quitting, walking out, change, not getting around to it, not going through with it, not anymore, an exception, short-lived … and such things as that.

Rider Waite’s Devil is the devil of black magic, the evil horned one of Roman Catholic myth. The Marseilles deck is more the Norse god of mischief, Loki. Core meanings for this Tarot card are wrong use of force and bondage. This is such a general card that it does not set a theme; it supports one. It covers the spectrum of any bad or undesirable thing – any degree of them. It can mean hate or it can mean being out of sorts or grumpy. It can mean rude, and it can mean brutal. It means some neutral things like obligation, physically attached, physical, sex, ugly, dirty, and a bond of any kind.
Now Without The Pictures |
The cards make a movie of today’s action. There’s World with the wall of defense up that prevents those bad influences from even seeing her, much less intruding. Eight of Cups is going out of its way to avoid World. Devil identifies the bad influence, the mistake, the obstacle, the addiction, the mischief or evil. World is you being invulnerable by way of blocking undesirable influences. And the combination of Eight of Cups and Devil is, well, avoiding the undesirable influences. So your wall of defense sends the bad stuff away. That’s our story today.
World It’s really true. In real time, you think of the perfect squelch to a recurring situation: ‘The next time someone stops in front of me instead of in the left turn lane, I shall occupy that lane and give them that dumb look.’ And you never get to do that. What used to happen several times a week never happens again. Why? – because, as World depicts here, when you are expert at handling the monster, the monster ain’t interested in you anymore – trouble avoids you.
The barrier concept applies across the board to unrelated subjects, making phrases you wouldn’t expect. Some of these are: the VIP, or the good looking gal isn’t interested and isn’t going to respond; unreachable or unavailable, block or shut out, don’t have to deal with, a superior person or expert, defenses, immovable object, privacy, in a world of your own, repel, deflect, don’t let it get to you, prevent, prevent problems, immune system. Rarely, World is a filter, a physical barrier like a sea wall, and anything that prevents contamination.
World is also the ideal woman, the trophy woman, the gorgeous or shapely woman . There are times when World describes keeping someone out of the loop, preventing contact or preventing someone from learning something.
Eight of Cups ‘Abrogate,’ ‘detour,’ and ‘abort’ are accurate words for Eight of Cups. Common words for this picture of a person going out of his way on a pilgrimage because the mountain and river are in the way are: outta here, depart, not anymore, disrupted, detour, drop out, quit, derailed, disappear or vanish. Eight of Cups brings up some miscellaneous ones too, like: boycott, fell off the wagon, short-lived, isn’t the way, ran off the road. There’s a built-in assumption the pilgrim will resume course (by going around the mountain).
Devil in Rider Waite is Mr. Horns-and-Batwings from Christian medieval imagination. (Personally, I think something that tempts us looks good and speaks well.) In the Marseilles deck, the illustration is more like the mischievous Loki from Viking myth. Devil’s illustration makes the point that vices, attachment to evil, are voluntary bondage on the part of humans. Those loose chains say that. There’s the idea of misuse of energy or force (the upside-down torch).
In application in Tarot spreads, Devil often translates ‘mistake’ and ‘wrong.’ Devil is ‘bad guy’ too. Name something bad, and Devil can probably represent it: rude, dark side, force, forced or no choice, brutality, addiction, lust, sickness, disability, disreputable, bad times, problems – all sorts of bad stuff. It can say a person is cranky, nasty, or in a terrible funk, as well as evil.
But Devil can also indicate ‘physical’ and ‘sex act,’ ‘ugly,’ ‘dirty,’ and physical attachment like being paper-clipped together, and difficulties and obstacles. Growing out of its bondage meanings (those chains again), Devil fairly often means obligation or obligated, obliged.
World and Eight of Cups See how Eight of Cups is changing his course because World is a barrier? That is a main way these two Tarot cards relate to one another.
World and Devil See how world shuts out the bad influences, and Devil is a bad influence? That is the main way these two Tarot cards relate to one another.
Eight of Cups and Devil When you’re going the wrong way, you turn off the road and go another way. That is the main way these two Tarot cards relate to one another. Quit because it’s too difficult, and walk away from something ugly, nasty, or brutish are some other examples.

Guidance |
Having to pay the price and hating to pay the price: We have all been to that counter, haven’t we? We talk about knowing. Knowing the hazards and knowing the price. Knowing the price (in money, difficulty or angst) of whatever it is you have to be, to do, or to acquire. It is about knowing what is right and who is right, and what is wrong and who is wrong. Then it is also about what it costs to set things straight, to, say, cure an addiction or illness.

Ace of Pentacles is the right way, the right path, the right anything, and is a lot of money to pay or receive. It is a road or route. You can’t miss its meanings with the illustration showing that straight path that so many religions feature, and a hand with money in it over that path of success, with roses and lilies. Sometimes you find it meaning a possessive pronoun too.

![]()
The woman who knows, the woman who knows her man and/or believes in him, the sweet lady. The good loyal wife. She is a woo-woo gal there, staring at a funky do-dad, water pouring around her throne. Queen of Cups can talk about opinion, mental (anything), expert knowing, and figuring out.

![]()
Justice often simply means ‘should’ or the way something should be or normally is. It means ‘straight’ and straighten out. Sometimes it means ‘sane.’ Sometimes it is about a right to (whatever). And of course it means the obvious (lawyers, court proceedings, to have a right or be entitled, legal and legally). Its illustration shows an upright crowned figure holding both the executioner’s sword and the scales of justice.

![]()
Devil gets around. It means anything wrong, bad, anything dirty, corrupt, perverted, and it means sickness, addiction, problem and difficulty. It is suffering or being put-upon, as in ‘after what I’ve been through’…. Once in a while it instructs to put cuss words in the material that is being quoted, even. It is one of those cards you don’t look to for the theme because it can mean so many things. Its message is that whatever you are limited by or bound by is your choice: The chains around the neck of the couple bound to the evil one are loose. ‘The wrong use of’ is a deeper meaning of this Rider Waite card. Abuse of power or force.
Now Without The Pictures |
Queen of Cups There sits the lady who knows, or the woman who has her man figured out, or who knows her man and has faith in him. She is a believer; she is loyal. She is a naif (naïve). She tends to be a secretary or other mental worker. This is such a feminine card that it will translate ‘she’ and ‘female’ fairly often.
Ace of Pentacles and Justice On either side of her are two Tarot cards that strongly mean ‘right’ – Ace of Pentacles to the left, and Justice to the right. Since they are so similar – mean many of the same things – Queen of Cups’ meanings are stronger.
Ace of Pentacles illustrates ‘the right path’ and shows a hand with money in it, thereby combining doing right with having money. It can mean these two things separately, of course, and also strongly means successful and success. Today it is: paying, receiving, and the price. Ace of Pentacles makes, of Queen of Cups, she who knows the price, knows the right way and, of course, she who is right about that.
Justice, to the right of her, means the obvious (lawyers, court proceedings, to have a right or be entitled, legal and legally) and ‘should.’ Justice ‘shoulds’ a lot. Justice makes Queen of Cups a legal secretary, a gal with the right idea, the one who knows the law, a successful lawyer, and the person to straighten things out.
Up pops the devil here in our spread. Devil usually means things like horrible, problem, wrong, brutish or nasty, evil or wicked. It also refers to disease and addictions. Being bound to something, disabled, or even physically attached belong to Devil’s dictionary too.
Queen of Cups and Devil Devil makes the sweet Queen of Cups ‘evil woman’ with the ‘wrong idea.’ She has figured out the corruption, too … or she can be wronged.
Justice and Devil Devil brings the criminal into the Justice card’s sphere of influence, making the lawyer (Justice) crooked (Devil), but also simply saying criminal lawyer, or legal problem. Justice and Devil also speak of righting a wrong, straightening out an addict, and something that is legal but immoral.
Ace of Pentacles and Devilx Devil brings the high cost of treating an addict up, when it combines with Ace of Pentacles. It is also the ‘criminal’ in the phrase ‘successful criminal’ which we follow with ‘lawyer’ because Justice is standing by.
There’s no action card today, so our messages are on the theoretical side.

My, my. We have the
devil and
God here, and in the center are
humans – a group of people – family. The list of contrasting things that
Devil and
Ace of Cups make is a busy one: sick and well, dirty and clean, impossible and easy, hate and love, rude and polite, being stuck and flowing, lust and love, bad and good, wrong and right, force and cooperation, conflict and peace, physical and spiritual.
Devil makes phrases, all kinds of phrases, partly because it has so many meanings. It means almost anything distasteful, awful, nasty or harmful – from something
being bad for you, or not good for you, to
getting murdered or being disabled. For instance:

My, my. We have the devil and God here, and in the center are humans – a group of people – family. The list of contrasting things that Devil and Ace of Cups make is a busy one: sick and well, dirty and clean, impossible and easy, hate and love, rude and polite, being stuck and flowing, lust and love, bad and good, wrong and right, force and cooperation, conflict and peace, physical and spiritual.
Devil makes phrases, all kinds of phrases, partly because it has so many meanings. It means almost anything distasteful, awful, nasty or harmful – from something being bad for you, or not good for you, to getting murdered or being disabled. For instance: bad guys (Devil and Four of Wands); sick house (Devil and Four of Wands); hate family (Devil and Four of Wands); hate God (Devil and Ace of Cups); ugly woman (Devil and Ace of Cups); love-hate (Devil and Ace of Cups) – and lots of others.
Four of Wands is a building (any kind, any size). So Devil and Four of Wands are a prison (building, Four of Wands; people chained, prison). Ace of Cups and Four of Wands is a hospital (building, Four of Wands; healing, Ace of Cups).

Devil You see the Christian devil here in Rider Waite, the devil of Middle Ages horns-and-tail with the bat wings and the satanic symbols. Marseilles deck depicts him more as the mischievous god Loki of Norse myth. The main takeaway to have in this illustration is that it – cartoon-like – says that humans’ vices are voluntary, because the chains that connect Adam and Eve to Devil’s perch are loose around their necks.
Devil can mean almost anything bad – and of course ‘bad’ is one of its meanings. Devil is the downside, the shadow side, the disadvantage, of anything. Today, Ace of Cups as God pulls Devil’s interpretations into its religious and spiritual language. We even have ‘sinners’ in our spread. Ace of Cups as health and healing, and as being in good shape, brings out the opposite characteristics that Devil stands for – a sick house, being in bad shape, ailment.
Four of Wands You have to recognize this drawing as a wedding of leading families, and that the public part of the marriage is what you are looking at here. The society wedding, the social register ceremony. Four of Wands, this way, extends the family or the couple to the community. To the world community, at any level. (Couple, family, neighborhood, city, county, state, nation, world.) Four of Wands is ‘us’ and ‘them.’ It translates just about any plural pronoun (us, them, we, they, you all, everybody, all the people who, etc.)
Four of Wands is house, building, headquarters. Four of Wands is any organization of any size, and any group or conglomeration of people, such as the power people, the political party, unions … any group at all. Four of Wands tends to show up when you are talking about mass consciousness or group think.
Ace of Cups’ core meaning arises from the complex illustration of the Spirit of God (the dove) in a person (the five streams representing humans’ five senses) influencing (the streams flowing into the large calm body of water) other people and consciousness itself. The dove of course is Holy Spirit and the wafer of the Communion ritual in its beak. A large body of calm water represents mass consciousness.
That core meaning is about love, good influence (good anything), cooperation, health and healing. From there, you have true love, unconditional love, cooperating, getting along, peace, being in agreement, being at ease and taking it easy.
Usually Ace of Cups uses these ordinary meanings rather than the religious, spiritual, and philosophical ones. Today, though, Ace of Cups shows up to contrast with Devil, bringing out those religious applications.

We think the people we agree with are the right kind of people and they will do right by us … until they don’t. Then they are the wrong kind of people. This habit of grouping people into ‘us’ and ‘them’ – into who does us good and who does us bad – and switching our allegiance to one set of people to another as we are ‘done right by’ or ‘done wrong by’ is such a human tribal trait.
