GUIDANCE Questioning what we are doing: There’s a time for it, and there’s a time to quit it. When to stop is the question too. Whether to do it in the first place is another. It’s like the difference between not being a worker and being nothing but a worker. We even wonder if we can do it. Things are up in the air right now.

Two of Swords – This is the simplest of simple Rider Waite Tarot cards. It illustrates a stalemate. Equally balanced swords in her crossed arms create a problem of putting one down – like the difficulty an animal with heavy antlers (moose, elk) experiences when it loses the first one. So Two of Swords shows stalemate, or stasis. The girl is stuck, whatever the story is behind being in night dress, blindfolded, sitting on a stone bench with her back to a large body of water.
.
Two of Swords is a main negator – negative modifier. Today it constantly says: not, isn’t, don’t, no. It also says: stalemate, quit, no way to, nothing left, for nothing, after it’s over, it’s over, stop it.
Eight of Pentacles – You see a carpenter pounding away at making one item after another. The two main meanings for Eight of Pentacles are work, and steadily keeping up some activity. Anything to do with work belongs to Eight of Pentacles. Like Magician, it means all forms of the verb ‘do.’ It also attracts the word ‘keep’ and its forms, especially ‘keeping.’ The ‘–ing‘ forms of words are called gerunds; ‘keeping’ is one of these. Watch for Eight of Pentacles to say ‘keep __ing,’ with the blank standing for another card’s verb. For example, Eight of Pentacles and a card that means ‘talking’ will say ‘Keep talking.’
.
Eight of Pentacles means persistence as well as persistent activity. It refers to routine, as the carpenter does his work routine. You find time phrases like these in Eight of Pentacles’ dictionary: every once in a while; still; all the time. It sometimes translates ‘always,’ as a number of other cards do.
Seven of Pentacles – “Huh?” Seven of Pentacles is a question mark. Like Page of Cups, it puts its sentence into question form; means the word ‘question’ as either a noun or a verb. Seven of Pentacles belongs to words like these too: wonder, ponder, unsure, ‘I don’t know,’ maybe, uncertain, don’t know, I guess.
.
That’s because our gardening guy here can’t be sure (is uncertain, doesn’t know yet) whether that cucumber plant will bear in the fall, because as a gendered plant it needs to be pollinated from an opposite-six plant of the same species. So he ponders whether his plant is pregnant here.

… .. ….. … .
As a major negator (negative modifier), Two of Swords simply adds a negative word or phrase to either of the roommate cards here. And today each of those cards has few, and well-defined, meanings. General ones.
.
Seven of Pentacles adds uncertainty or a question. So we are left with uncertainty about something that is being done, or it’s not being done. You see how our spread describes that sort of limbo.
.
One of them, Eight of Pentacles, is mainly anything to do with work, and any way of expressing repetitive, steady, routine doings or activity. Eight of Pentacles suggests ‘ always doing that.’ Add Two of Swords, and the ‘ always’ meaning says ‘ don’t always‘ or ‘ not always.’ Add Seven of Pentacles instead, and the ‘ always’ meaning says ‘ I guess (he/she/it/you/they) always ….’
.
When Eight of Pentacles is about work, Two of Swords makes it say: It’s not my job; it isn’t working; don’t keep doing that; quit working, or stop working, or ‘ No work.’
.
Using Eight of Pentacles’ work meanings, Seven of Pentacles makes phrases like these: Is it working?; maybe it’s my job to; wonder about the job; think it’s my job.
.
Using Eight of Pentacles’ ‘ still’ meanings with Seven of Pentacles’ ‘ question’ or ‘ unsure’ meanings brings you expressions like these: being unsure all the time; still have a question; still wonder.
.
Adding the negative of Two of Swords to the question of Seven of Pentacles gives you these: What if you quit?; uncertain about quitting; no doubt; wonder whether or not; I guess it’s not; why say ‘ no’; is (whoever) saying ‘ no’; doesn’t know when to stop; can you stop?; seems there’s no way; I guess (I am/he or she is/you or they are) not going to; I guess it’s not … and so on.
.
So things are up in the air, and action either isn’t happening or there’s some doubt about it. (Take a nap.)

There’s doing, and there’s thinking about it. There’s not doing, and there’s not thinking about it. You can do it without thinking, and you can just think of doing. Maybe we should stop, but why stop?? We are full of both action and uncertainty. Eight of Pentacles – Seven of Pentacles – Two of Wands
LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
.
……………………… At a glance, Eight of Pentacles is work, and Two of Wands is the future, and your bank account … and Seven of Pentacles is wondering about it, and uncertainty. So we are talking about an uncertain job market, uncertain job future. Two of Wands is a certainty, a plan, and banks, which has us considering working for the bank, pondering an uncertain future, and even wondering what to do about our bank account. Eight of Pentacles is one after another, and Two of Wands is a plan … so we ponder (Seven of Pentacles) one plan after another. Having certainty (Two of Wands) and uncertainty (Seven of Pentacles) share a spread, with the other card being one after another, over and over … well, we ain’t so sure today, are we?
……………………….. Eight of Pentacles is one of our anchor cards: Nice and simple, reliable meanings that apply easily. Eight of Pentacles is, first, work – anything at all to do with work, labor, workplace, work site, working on it, working at it, labor as an expense, labor as a political party: Did I say ‘anything’? Illustration is a hardworking carpenter who consistently and constantly hammers out one pentacle after another.
Next, Eight of Pentacles is all kinds of words and phrases about doing the same thing over and over, or one after another, often, always, repeated actions, consistent, constant …. You get it. Especially when Eight of Pentacles neighbors a subconscious or spiritual card, it speaks of being in reflexive mode. When you do something over and over, you zone out, and the subconscious can grab the microphone of your mind. (Think hypnosis. Think the rosary, or worry beads, or the chanting you see in oriental religions.)
……………………….. Seven of Pentacles can be summarized in one word: ‘Huh?’ It is one big question mark, like Page of Cups, and sometimes like Two of Pentacles, which says ‘It’s silly; it could go either way.’ Of course, Seven of Cups says ‘It is unpredictably out of control and anything at all could happen,’ which is similar but not an exact match. Our Seven of Pentacles shows a fellow leaning on his shovel wondering whether his garden labor will be rewarded with cucumbers from his cucumber plant because that is one of the plants with gender, and if opposite genders aren’t within pollinating distance … well, no paycheck. Labor in vain. So Seven of Pentacles is doing the work without knowing whether it will pay off. Next to Eight of Pentacles, your job, this is ominous. Ominous for your bank account, our Two of Wands upcoming.
……………………….. Two of Wands is all about the future because our mogul in the illustration is planning what to do to make more profit out of the real estate he owns below. Mogul? – you say. Yes: See the world in his hands? He is the bank, the landlord, the mortgage holder or mortgage broker, the controller of the future. (He is you when you’ve got it all under control too.) Two of Wands is the bank account, the pension, the financial future, the financial markets (stock markets, bond markets, Federal Reserve, etc.), the financial plan and the financial planner … including you, and yours.
.
.
Back in the day, you could follow the public recipe for financial security, beginning from your bag-boy introduction to the job market, and do what was called for (show up on time and put groceries in the bag politely), and, step by step, Be Somebody. The way was paved if you were the favored prototype white male. Go to college, graduate okay, and you got hired as a middle manager. Those middle managers were cleared out around ’65 or so. We focus on today’s uncertainty even if you are the star producer in a good industry: Ain’t nothin’ fo’ sho’. Determination, a plan, and persistent effort today, and you are still wondering about that financial security that was free and guaranteed to the right fellow back then.
Now we show where each of the phrases in each of the sentences comes from:

Eight of Pentacles……….Eight of Pentacles is a carpenter making one after the other identical items by hand. He is the worker, and Eight of Pentacles is ALL about work, employment, job, the doing of a task, being the one who does the task (line, not staff, as the office people snootily categorize it). He is the working-class workingman. He is the man with the j-o-b; he is employed.
Eight of Pentacles can mean the state of mind one is in from doing repetitive motions – even like buttoning your clothes or typing. That is called reflexive mode. Savants access their subconscious and connect to spiritual source through reflexive mode.
Eight of Pentacles calls forth all sorts of words and phrases that are about ‘one after the other,’ incessantly, consistent and constant actions and people.
.
Seven of Pentacles………….Seven of Pentacles is specifically ‘Doubt about the outcome.’ You commonly find this in Tarot books. The fellow has sweated caring for that bush, and there’s no assurance it will produce because he may not have enough of those plants for both genders of it, to assure pollination, and, therefore, cucumbers. He just has to wait and wonder whether he will get paid. This card sitting next to Eight of Pentacles, you job, means you wonder whether that job will pay off. Seven of Pentacles is in a pensive, pondering, wondering mood.
.
Two of Wands…………Two of Wands is long-term prospects, financial security, real estate financial matters, and banking-related issues and subjects. Two of Wands is one of the cards that connects being rich with being good and respectable. Ten of Cups, Ace of Pentacles, and even Four of Wands carry that assumption.
Two of Wands’ most frequent translate, though is simply future tense: putting the sentence in some way into the future tense, including with ‘will’ and ‘will be’ and even ‘in the future.’
Another important aspect and application of Two of Wands is being in control, being The Man with the Plan (or the woman, of course). It means certainty, guaranteed, for sure, security, and other such words.

Tarot Verbatim
Guidance What type of person are you? What categories do you fit and not fit into? This determines your destiny in so many unspoken and unwritten ways, especially in the workplace. Posture and dress and speech classify you and me as if there were a caste system in spite of our many ways of pussyfooting around it. Even more than ability, talent, or intelligence, having the look and/or being the type opens doors of opportunity. A person’s manner and manners attract or detract in ways that would be frowned upon as ‘discrimination’ in another setting. Some professions less than others, it’s true, but even in those it pays to mind your appearance as much as your manners, and exhibit the customary behavior for the field. Ahem, we call that conforming.

Tarot Verbatim: Questioning Work (Eight of Pentacles and Seven of Pentacles)
I guess I’m proud to be working class.
He is the type who asks you one question after another.
Are my language skills up to snuff for this job?
Why should a young guy have just an ordinary job?
Can you do the same thing in the same way over and over – is that you?
He is the type to question the way things are usually done.
The work is so standardized; am I that type person?
Tarot Verbatim: The Right Look For The Job (Hierophant and Page of Wands and Eight of Pentacles)
I think I am a good fit for my job.
He says this is the work he usually does, and I think so.
So where is my respectable handsome young man who is employed?
If I were good-looking, would I be doing my usual job?
How come the average worker there is so clean-cut?
How can a guy so young and cute be a such a good worker?
Having the right look for this job seems to be enough.
Tarot Verbatim: Good Enough to Work Here (Hierophant and Eight of Pentacles)
I wonder if have the credentials to work there?
Can I claim I have a good recommendation at that place of employment?
I think you will fit right in with the look the other employees have.
Tarot Readings: I Keep Questioning Things (Eight of Pentacles and Seven of Pentacles)
I’m pretty sure I can say the same lines over and over.
This job involves saying things that are not quite factual.
Talking for a living is not quite the usual thing.
Can you say the prescribed lines for this job?
Tarot Readings: I Keep Questioning Things (Eight of Pentacles and Seven of Pentacles)
Have you ever heard an honest worker claim to be one?
I tell myself over and over I am not so sure this is correct.
Do you think you should keep saying that, even though it’s true?
I wonder why the average Joe, every time, says these things.
What if I suggested a job that is just average?
They say my employment is not quite respectable.
Why do we always use the same words to say that?

Seven of Pentacles
Hierophant – Page of Wands – Eight of Pentacles
LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
. Hierophant and Page of Wands are similar cards with different applications. Both mean being respectable, behaving well, conforming, fitting in, being accepted and acceptable, and having the right look. They are both about appearances more than actualities. Hierophant is more about the qualities, and Page of Wands is a person who has those characteristics or qualities. So Hierophant is respectability, and Page of Wands is respectable.
Hierophant is about the face of things, having a straight face, having the right papers and so forth. Hierophant is about standards and strictures – conforming to them, complying with them, being okay. Hierophant very often simply says the ordinary, usual, average … the consensus more than what’s right. Hierophant is the official story, the things most people pretend to believe or think they believe. There’s an artificiality to Hierophant, a hypocrisy, sometimes. The root meaning of the card is the difference between the way it really is, and the way we act like it is – whether we are a person or a government or a workplace.
Page of Wands is a person who fits in, conforms, is acceptable and accepted, who wants to please and is someone everyone gets along with. The ‘conforming’ expands, in Page of Wands, to speech or talk (well-spoken), to dress (well-dressed or appropriately dressed), to physical appearance (handsome, young, good-looking, fit). But it also stands for those qualities or characteristics, so it can describe a female as well. Most often, it applies to a person in his or her twenties, starting out in life as an apprentice and wanting to fit in. (Of course, we all know elderly people who are youthful in their way of living.) Keep in mind, though, that Page of Wands often simply reads ‘he,’ and does not stand for a female when it is just referring to person like that.
An aspect of Page of Wands we have not touched upon, because we are not using it today, is ‘standing up’ and ‘standing for’ and making a claim, giving your word. Popeye’s ‘I am who I am.’
Hierophant and Eight of Pentacles refer to a routine. Hierophant describes a protocol, a ceremony, a ritual, and the proper way it’s done, or the way it’s usually done. Eight of Pentacles is doing the same operation over and over, exemplified by a carpenter making identical pieces.
Eight of Pentacles is the job, work, workplace, work site, working class, worker, employment, and steadily doing the same thing. It often says ‘over and over’ and ‘keep doing,’ which means continuing to do something as well as ‘keeping at it.’ It refers to consistently being or doing – like loving you consistently rather than sporadically, like calling or showing up consistently – but of course the other card is necessary for this application. Look for ‘ing’ words (gerunds) for this. Soo now we know what all this from the other cards applies to: the job.
Seven of Pentacles The remaining Rider-Waite Tarot card asks a question, is not so sure about something, wonders and ponders, and translates ‘maybe.’ It can say ‘doubt,’ especially doubt about an outcome because the fellow leaning on the shovel is not sure his labor will pay off in produce: Cucumbers need a plant of the opposite gender in order to bear.
Hierophant and Eight of Pentacles; also Page of Wands and Eight of Pentacles Here is why our main theme is fitting in at work. Eight of Pentacles is work or job; both Hierophant and Page of Wands mean fitting in, conforming, being acceptable. Both Hierophant and Page of Wands are about ‘type of person,’ stereotypes, as well. So that is our theme today: who to be.

Hierophant means pope. There he is in a red robe, monks kneeling to his authority. Conformity galore. Here it will refer to fitting in and being the right type of person. Hierophant is about the surface appearance: the ritual, not its real meaning. This idea is illustrated by the pope doing a ritual with some monks or priests.
Page of Wands dresses the part and speaks well. He is all about image and fitting in and being acceptable, about being the type, and type-casting yourself. He is the good-looking respectable young man your mother wants/wanted you to marry. He can be vain and foppish in Tarot Verbatim™ as he is pictured in our Rider Waite deck here.
Eight of Pentacles is about repetitive action, doing something in the same way over and over, as the carpenter makes one identical tile after another here. Work, employment, the workplace, the job, being the worker or being working-class. Eight of Pentacles is also about being consistent, keeping at it, being steady.
Seven of Pentacles ponders and puzzles and questions. When you grow plants that have gender, they don’t bear fruit unless both genders are within some vicinity of one another. This is the questionable situation in the illustration.

Guidance Today is all job related. Scenarios and attitudes that determine how a worker fits the work. Will they think you’re management if you show them how to do their job? Do you get ahead by being friendly? There’s that barely visible line in the sand between co-worker and supervisor that has social implications. You succeed because a friend helps you figure out the job, or vice versa. He quietly goes to work to see if he can do the work. Whatever he does that gets him ahead is okay with him. Indecisive about what he wants to achieve but willing to work. Volunteer work may be the way to ingratiate yourself there. Apply for whatever job you can accomplish.

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
Today these four Rider Waite Tarot cards are talking only about job and employment, because they covered Love in yesterday’s presentation.
We start with work, Eight of Pentacles, today’s star card. You see the carpenter at his work bench.
Chariot is over there as ambition, getting ahead, being in charge – even as a driver. He is known for getting the job done any way it can be done. He is willful; he has willpower.
Knight of Cups is polite, friendly, quietly helpful or a helper; he also suggests and applies for. He is willing; he cooperates.
And of course, Seven of Pentacles adds a question mark, wonders and ponders, or says ‘maybe.’ Here are some of his phrases today: ask, figure out, consider, seems, don’t think of, think of __ as, may be seen as, unknown, watch, somehow, don’t see a reason, ask for, whatever, indecisive, not so sure, whatever, if, guessing.

Eight of Pentacles Work and employee and job site and labor. Steadily doing the same thing. Eight of Pentacles is repeated actions and habitual behaviors. Pictured is a carpenter at his bench making one after another identical item. This is a good illustration for the idea of a diligent worker: Have you ever heard a very experienced carpenter drive one nail after another on a construction site?
Knight of Cups The quintessential nice guy or good guy: He is drawn in curving lines and painted in pastel colors, and so is his merry-go-round horse. He offers, he accepts, he is your friend or boyfriend. Knight of Cups is communicates, cooperates, and takes the initiative (Mercury’s wings on his helmet). At work, he is the quietly helpful facilitator or assistant. He takes initiative, makes suggestions, and is flexible.
Chariot gets ahead, is ambitious, puts everything he’s got into – and uses everything in the environment to – get the job or project done. He is in charge, he is management, and he is no-nonsense no-excuses competent. A charioteer was a shock troop who had to skillfully handle an unwieldy two-wheeled vehicle and two horses in combat.
Seven of Pentacles Gee, I wonder. I dunno. Maybe. You suppose? I planted cucumbers and maybe not enough to assure both genders, so I may not get any cucumbers this year. Doubt about the outcome. One of the cards that in Tarot Verbatim ™ puts the sentence into question form.

Guidance ‘Going with the flow’ eases us on the way to our destination. (1) Being friendly and cooperative, and (2) being competent and responsible: These are good for the success of my work and my social life. Of course, success isn’t a given. Sometimes something as simple as transportation affects it. Sometimes I try one thing after the other while wondering whether to ask for help. Sometimes I accept, because it is offered, something I would not have chosen. A Boyfriend who cheerfully does whatever it takes to make it work: Now, that is success.

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
Eight of Pentacles and Chariot Eight of Pentacles is work, worker(s), employee(s), doing the same thing over and over again; Chariot is success and getting ahead, and projects. These two together mean accomplishing something by your own actions. They each refer to doing something and to getting something done. Chariot is more accomplishing one thing, and Eight of Pentacles is to do the same thing over and over accomplishing something. Both these cards are often associated with work, but of course not always.
Knight of Cups and Seven of Pentacles Knight of Cups is a friend, boyfriend, helper. He is friendly, he offers, he accepts, he is gracious and polite, affectionate and easygoing. Seven of Pentacles is one of those pesky cards that puts the information in question form and means ‘to doubt,’ to wonder or ponder, to be uncertain. Put them together, and boyfriend wonders, or someone wonders about boyfriend.
All the cards today are males.
This spread immediately made me think of the book Winning Friends and Influencing People, a success-oriented book.

Eight of Pentacles There he is at his work bench making one identical item after another. This Rider Waite Tarot card in the Tarot Verbatim ™ system often means anything to do with work: working-class, work place, worker(s), working, employee(s). Today we feature steadily, consistently, all the time, and always and regularly doing the same thing over and over. Persistence, and habitual routine activity: That is the groove for Eight of Pentacles.
Knight of Cups The cooperative, helpful fellow who takes the initiative to be friendly or affectionate – because he is the Boyfriend card too. He is the helper or assistant in work stories. He offers, and he accepts offers. The mellow fellow is pictured in curving outlines and pastel colors. His horse is borrowed from a merry-go-round. He wears Mercury’s wings on his helmet so he is the one who communicates.
Chariot We feature the part of his meanings about ‘getting it done’ today rather than his power and responsibility meanings. Today we use ‘choose’ and ‘deliberate’ a lot, and even ‘willpower.’ He is a driver or a vehicle or transportation as well today. Often Chariot is about strategy and the accomplishment of a major task. The illustration shows a charioteer, a master strategist who accomplishes the project no matter what.
Seven of Pentacles ‘Ask’ is Seven of Pentacles’ favorite word today. Oh duh. Hmmm, I wonder. Do you suppose these cucumbers will bear? I have done all the work of planting, watering, weeding and fertilizing and I just have to wait. I have my doubts but there is nothing more to I can do. So I just ask this rhetorical question ….

Guidance What type of person are you? What categories do you fit and not fit into? This determines your destiny in so many unspoken and unwritten ways, especially in the workplace. Posture and dress and speech classify you and me as if there were a caste system in spite of our many ways of pussyfooting around it. Even more than ability, talent, intelligence, having the look and/or being the type opens doors of opportunity. Some professions less than others, it’s true, but even in those it pays to mind your appearance as much as your manners, and exhibit the customary behavior for the field.

He is the type who asks you one question after another.
Are my language skills up to snuff for this job?

Why should a young guy have just an ordinary job?

The remaining Rider-Waite Tarot card asks a question, is not so sure about something, wonders and ponders, and translates ‘maybe.’ It can say ‘doubt,’ especially doubt about an outcome because the fellow leaning on the shovel is not sure his labor will pay off in produce: Cucumbers need a plant of the opposite gender in order to bear.
