Four of Pentacles – Key concept of Four of Pentacles is deficiency, lack. It just applies in unexpected ways, that’s all. Let’s look at the rather complex picture. A fella clutching his money to his chest sitting outside of town in the road suggests someone with something to hide. The way he is holding onto himself suggests he feels inferior and is stifling himself. Holding tightly onto his money suggests he is broke. ‘The Miser’ is how this card is commonly referred to.

Any phrase about not talking belongs solidly to Four of Pentacles. Look at the ones we collected today: isn’t telling’ not letting on; no comment; keeping secrets from; would not acknowledge; stifle himself; not admitting, withheld from; keep quiet about; would not say; his secrets; did not listen; when you are hiding; so unutterable; don’t admit it; shut up.

Four of Pentacles also is about deep feelings (as well as about stifling them). The kind of feelings you don’t admit to yourself. Along that line, Four of Pentacles also means ‘internal’ in a very general way – including internal organs in a medical topic.
Eight of Wands – Meanings in Tarot Verbatim™ come from ten years of asking questions I knew the answers to, writing them down, and reviewing them. Eight of Wands is the main general communication card: any kind of communication – written, oral, telepathy, smoke signals. It is the chief card for documents. So it belongs to what I call the speak/tell/say Tarot tribe. That includes words like ‘news’ and ‘express.’

Eight of Wands means ‘increasing’ and ‘increasingly.’ It commonly translates more, many, every, and much. It also translates ‘all’ words like all that; all the; all those things; a lot of. As a matter of fact, Eight of Wands pluralizes nearby cards – and sometimes that’s all it does in your layout!

Those boards are flying through the air, which gives Eight of Wands words like hurry, quickly and fast.

And it means a list. You can see how the picture suggest one item after another.
Hermit – Hermit is a monk. Most of his meanings arise from that and from the illustration – including some you would not expect – like he comes to other people. So like Knight of Cups, he can be the one to initiate socially, or volunteer to do something (including a favor) for another person.

Since Hermit has a lot of unrelated meanings, what I’m going to do here is trace the words he contributes today to the illustration or the story the card tells.

Hermit is wise; he knows; he is a counselor and even a doctor. Today, he means ‘know’ and forms of that word a lot. He is looking at and looking for, so he also means to discover. Occasionally, Hermit translates ‘wise up’ or ‘wised up.’

Hermit is associated with the truth, the facts, discovering and finding them out – even investigating them or looking into some situation. So he is not only about observation, but about accurate truthful realistic observation.

Hermit is associated with virtue since he is a monk – especially patience, understanding, sincerity, honesty, being a friend, and being of service.

All three of our today-cards are good examples of ones that have unrelated meanings due to their illustrations and stories. First glance says Four of Pentacles is not telling, is secrets, and also means ‘ not enough’; Eight of Wands is telling, and means ‘ a lot of,’ ‘ more and more’ or increasingly, and ‘ much.’ Hermit is knowing and finding out. So it’s obvious that things are coming to light – that that is our story for the day.

But we also have a theme of knowing it all, and of not telling any of it. That’s the plot that drives most of our stories.
