GUIDANCE As social animals, we tend to take a cue from the people around us. If they are uneasy or jittery, we too feel defensive. We let jealous people or neurotic people wear us down, and we take family goings-on personally. Tension is in the air for us to pick up on when a couple is warring. If we work for a company that is disliked, we actually take on a defensive stance. And we are uneasy around touchy people too. Today, we pay attention to this tendency of ours.

Four of Wands – A society wedding is a public occasion here, as the business of all the people who are part of the, shall we say, tax base. So Four of Wands, besides being marriage and family, is about membership and belonging. In Tarot Verbatim’s™ Rider Waite interpretations, all three marriage cards also represent group life of humans, from the couple to family to neighborhood to city, county, state, nation, world and whatever else may be.
.
Today Four of Wands is marriage and spouse and wedding and the house as usual, and it is also ‘people.’
.
The other marriage cards that also represent human groups, clans and tribes are Ten of Cups (which shows a couple with two kids in a good neighborhood) and Ten of Pentacles, the negative one, which shows a family quarrel in what could be construed as either a good or a bad neighborhood.

Page of Swords – You could call him free-floating anxiety, or ambient stress, or even idiopathic anger, but the short cut way to think of Page of Swords is ‘adrenaline.’ Because he is in an excited state for any cause: thrilled, jealous, anticipating, feeling threatened, on pins and needles, panic, being driven crazy, afraid, tension, taking something personally, being on the alert or on the lookout, antsy, edgy, angry, irritated, touchy, defensive, assertive, or caffeine jitters. Yes, this is the card for a hyped-up person.
.
Page of Swords is when you feel something’s up and don’t know why, and Page of Swords is when you are picking up the emotional disturbance in the air. Page of Swords is things going ‘bump’ in the night. And Page of Swords is the night before the big test, when you are studying like crazy, dreading, and nervous about the score.

Nine of Wands – You are trapped in a situation that has already harmed you in some way, and you are hanging in there standing your ground as it constantly wears you down. Tension is constant and you are uneasy for some good reason that you just have to put up with and live through, or at least that is what you feel you must do: Nine of Wands is Alamo time.
.
Nine of Wands also comes up for being under suspicion, for being on the defensive as you are persecuted or harassed, and for being accused – for things like staying in an abusive situation. It’s also for real soldiers in real battles, and for wounded veterans, because our guy guarding that border has a head would. (Speaking of which Nine of Wands can speak of a head wound or headaches.)

A three-card spread in which two of them are near-identical and one is bland or neutral tends to be difficult to make more than a few sentences out of. This is such a spread.
Page of Swords and
Nine of Wands are both all about fear, anxiety, tension, apprehension, being on edge, being on guard, being on the defensive, feeling pressured, feeling very uncomfortable, antsy, uneasy and even touchy. Both
Page of Swords and
Nine of Wands feel threatened by ‘something out there’ and are holding their ground re that. And these are the main meanings of each.
.
The reason Tarot has these similar cards is to indicate a theme for a larger spread. When two of these twins meet up in close three-card quarters, you are going to have some fancy phrasing to do. Which, yes, we have done here.
.
Nine of Wands has a fresh wound from his battle with something. He
dreads the thing that hurt him coming back, but
he is there holding his ground despite the fear. The card applies to emotional wounds most of its practical real-life Tarot spread life, but the picture shows
a wounded soldier still on duty guarding the fort, hanging in there and sweating it out. Note there is no expectation of winning in
Nine of Wands, only a hope of surviving. Note also
Nine of Wands is long-term, chronic, unremitting.
.
Page of Swords has two main applications. One of them is similar to
Nine of Wands, and that’s the one of being fearful of the unseen, of things that go ‘bump’ in the night.
Page of Swords too is on edge, pressured, and dreading what next.
.
But
Page of Swords is also the nerved-up-for-no-reason annoying neurotic, the pest, the irritating irrational around you. He tends to hang out with Seven of Wands as the mouthy mooch who
intends to annoy you into doing (or not doing) something.
Page of Swords is not a grownup, not the seasoned veteran we see in
Nine of Wands.
.
So who’s the third element to complete this picture? –
Four of Wands.
Four of Wands is just other people, from a couple to a family to a neighborhood, and on out to any size group of people that has something in common – maybe something as inconsequential and random as a border.
Four of Wands is ‘us,’ ‘them,’ ‘people’ and ‘those people’ or ‘that company’ or ‘that family.’ Today it represents both the
people or company that is the source of the

angst the other two cards represent, or is
people who are feeling that

So today’s message is a reminder that things around you can affect you like a virus on a doorknob does, and not to catch the dis-ease emitted by .

Guidance Tensions between a couple compare to tensions between families. It’s always two sides, you know … The two sides expand to the neighborhood and then to the general situation. Tarot presents the idea that two factions are a repeating pattern greater than the sum of its parts, that individuals, couples, neighbors and states engage one another in conflict because of instinctual taste for the conflict more than for a cause or any real reason.

Now, Part Two,
Do you want to know a little, or a lot, about how this Tarot Verbatim™ thing works? If so,
*Go to Learn Tarot by Observing section below. This tells about the combined four pictures in the Tarot Readings – the pictures above here. It explains how these four cards get together in your mind to make the messages.
*Go to Learn Tarot by Pictures. It is what each of the four cards, by itself, has to say. It shows you how that illustration makes that card’s meanings in today’s Spread. All the words of each Tarot card reading you see here are a phrase-by-phrase translation of the scene pictured on those cards: no filler, no psychic impressions, no spirit guide. Word-for-word Tarot Verbatim™.
You can put all this together and intuitively see yourself how Tarot Verbatim™ works.
This is a group reading, with no Questioner and no Question to limit what the cards say, so there’s more variety – even contradictions – and also the pronouns are more flexible. If it feels like it’s yours, and it says ‘he,’ and you’re a ‘she,’ feel free to adopt it anyway.

Nine of Wands
Ten of Cups – Four of Wands – Eight of Wands
LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
.
Ten of Cups and Four of Wands Here are the two ‘happy marriage’ cards waltzing in together. Our theme. Their meanings overlap a lot. Ten of Cups means marriage, happy marriage, everybody, family, neighborhood, house, happy couple, happy people, well-adjusted ‘good’ people, group, prosperity, celebration, reunion, and happy. Four of Wands also means wedding, neighborhood of good (upstanding) people, wedding, native country, members, faction, community (including in the political sense), company, organization, headquarters, and agency (any level). Most of the time, as you can see, these two cards mean pretty much the same thing: You look for one each in two sentences to establish a ‘unity’ theme of one sort or another.
But put them side by side, and they do come up with some phrases, like an organization that is ‘one big happy family.’
Eight of Wands and Nine of Wands cancel that unity theme. Nine of Wands is all kinds of defensiveness, since it depicts a border guard who dreads another attack, you know? Here’s what it says today: grievance, have to live up to it uneasy, distrust, pressure, facing difficulty, having to live up to, nervous, get on nerves, guarding, dreading, worry, defensive, under threat, uncomfortable, tension.
Eight of Wands just adds to things. Its meanings don’t correlate with the illustration much. Generally, it indicates a plural for a nearby card – ‘those things’ – means ‘increasingly’ and ‘more and more’ and ‘ier.’ It is also communication, written, oral or whatever: talk, new. It is also a list.
Put them together and a bad thing is getting worse.

Ten of Cups Happily ever after in suburbia with a boy and a girl, a rainbow over the ranch house, a couple hugs while the kids prance. This is the good upstanding life in the good neighborhood as one of the good people. It is any group of people, in a good context. Let’s apply that generality, shall we? This meaning expands to include any circle (as in circle of friends) and people who have anything in common (parties, factions, camps – the choir, the crowd at the pool hall, the coworkers you asked about, etc.) – family, people, the good people, marriage, happy marriage, married with children, happiness, togetherness (one big happy family). The meaning expands to neighbors and community, but Four of Wands is usually the spokesperson for city, state, county, nation, national groups and so on. Ten of Cups is a house or home, too – usually in a respectable area.

Four of Wands A big wedding of the leading families is a community event, and means a formal marriage. Put Justice with it, and it’s a ‘paper marriage.’ Four of Wands means these other things in a formal way too: community (any level including international, as in races or religions), country, native country – company, agency, organization, headquarters, corporate interests. It is a public building, often a court house (especially with Justice), and it can also be a house.

Eight of Wands Usually a simple Rider Waite Tarot citizen meaning either communicating – talk, messages, writing – or quickly – or increasingly, more and more. It can also mean accumulatively, as when one after another goes into the stack, bin, or whatever. Its illustration doesn’t relate to its meaning as closely as most of the other Rider Waite Tarot cards. Pictured are sprouting limbs flying one above another in the air, looking sort of like lines on a page. It stands for texting, by the way, as well as talking.

Nine of Wands guards the perimeter, head bandaged from the last sortie, feeling uneasy. ‘Being on your guard’ and ‘guarded’ are words that reflect how uncomfortable you feel in a Nine of Wands situation. You feel tense, anxious, fearful, dread, defensive. Nine of Wands also, of course, stands for a security guard, or guarding anything, or even a dog who is a guard.
