Nine of Pentacles – What the picture tells us is this woman is at leisure (the falcon) at midday in her robe. She is in no hurry (the snail). She owns that vineyard, runs it, and lives there, which makes her a businesswoman and an entrepreneur. The picture also shows enjoying the outdoors and a hobby.

Nine of Pentacles comes across as the single woman, and yet another woman in Tarot Verbatim™ who stays home (or in one place), minds her own business, is content with things as they are, and is not interested in what’s going on elsewhere. She is associated with being in comfortable control of her circumstances, with competence, expertise, being in a niche, having money of her own and being independent – even entrepreneurial.
Hierophant – Very complex set of meanings. It starts with a church scene, the pope doing business as usual in the physical world, going through the motions in the same way that everyone accepts as normal, the way it should be. All these words are Hierophant words, especially: should, ought, proper, correct, and officially accepted (like dogma).

Hierophant means to measure up, to be acceptable, to pass, to behave, to be respectable, to conform, to be normal and ordinary and okay. It owns just about any churchy word.

But Hierophant has a lot of fairly unexpected items in its dictionary. It means safe. It means to be entitled and to deserve. It means enough, which grows out of its ‘middle’ set of meanings (middle of the road, modicum, middle class, etc.). It means ‘what is’ or ‘as things are.’ Today that is expressed as ‘what I already have.’ In romantic questions, it means to commit or commitment. Hierophant means things are under control and ‘all right’ or okay.

There’s this other more philosophical distinction Hierophant owns: the distinction between the official story and what those in the know accept; the distinction between the face of things and the reality beneath. We don’t get into that here.

Hierophant is one of the cards that can translate ‘physical’ too because the ritual is physical. ‘In the real physical world’ belongs to Hierophant, and goes along with its ‘official’ meanings about ‘papers.’

Death – When you see this Death card in Tarot Verbatim, you are aware that the other cards are likely to mean ‘not’ what they mean – Death attaches negative words to its fellow Tarot citizens. Today it means ‘not’ way more than half the time. Keep in mind it adds negative prefixes like ‘un.’

The other main trunk of the Death tree is words that mean ‘end,’ which includes ‘finally’ and ‘is over.’ ‘After it’s all over,’ we say today, and ‘That is all!’

Nine of Pentacles is often ‘ doing just fine,’ which today brings the word ‘ calmly,’ which could have been ‘ coolly.’ Nine of Pentacles doesn’t usually mean calmly. She is a businesswoman, and today that became the ‘ business’ of ‘ business as usual.’ (Things like this happen when you put your spreads into English vernacular.) Nine of Pentacles turns ‘ She owns her home’ to ‘ you have the home.’ And ‘ she likes it like that’ appears for ‘ content,’ which does happen with this Nine of Pentacles card.
