GUIDANCE When keeping up appearances is a strain, you know in your gut that you are not where you belong; you are out of place. Some people can stay indefinitely in a pretense situation. They feel there’s some payoff unrelated to the unremitting tension, or the tension itself, the bad feeling, is their payoff.

Queen of Wands – In Tarot Verbatim™ Queen of Wands is the main card for Wife. When she represents the gal a dude is dating, he is usually conflicted and nervous about committing, or is ready for the trip to the altar. Queen of Wands is not only the wife, but the marrying kind or ‘the kind you marry,’ the matriarch (as is Queen of Pentacles), and the housewife.
.
Queen of Wands can translate ‘domestic,’ she is so associated with home – and therefore with house. She is associated with an orderly house and an orderly home life. Also an orderly business life, where Queen of Wands tends to be the manager. So Queen of Wands maintains and organizes her corner of the world. (And by the way, the word ‘domestic’ for Queen of Wands occasionally will indicate one’s county or origin as ‘domestic country.’
.
As a person, Queen of Wands is sensible, organized, no-nonsense, pragmatic or even blunt. I think of her as The Mama and as a ‘nurse type,’ and she can be the country-woman – as King of Wands, the husband card, can be the country-boy.
Hierophant – You see a picture of the pope and his assistants doing their normal ritual, and this concept expands to most of Hierophant’s meanings. Hierophant means anything churchy. It says ‘respectable,’ and it covers words like: behave, proper, acceptable, and in good order.
.
The ritual is the ordinary doings of these people, is official business, and is done in the proper way. Hierophant’s ‘official’ meaning extends to include ‘on paper’ official things like titles, certificates, the name of something or someone. Hierophant is about keeping up appearances.
.
It’s an ordinary day these rituals are done in. You can picture the people being bored with the whole thing that they do maybe every blessed day. So Hierophant means: Perfectly normal, ordinary, safe, okay. This meaning stretches into being average, being median or middle – including being middle class.
.
Hierophant means ‘harmless’ or no harm being done – just a nice peaceful day like all the others.
.
Hierophant means ‘physical,’ as Page of Wands does. The point of Hierophant is ‘face’ or appearances in the ‘real physical world’ as opposed to the spiritual side of religion. So it will sometimes translate ‘physically.’
.
Hierophant means ‘type of person.’ It refers to the class or classification of anything. Remember that when the subject is science.
Nine of Wands – Mr. Border Guard is hanging in there, sweating it out, anxious and fearful about when the enemy is going to return and wound him again. His head wound sometimes gives meanings about headache as well as worse head problems. Most of Nine of Wands meanings arise directly out of this situation. Some of his phrases are less obvious, like today’s ‘no matter what.’
.
Nine of Wands is all about bad feelings that are pretty much in the category of anxiety fear, worry, misgivings, strain, pressure, suffering through, hanging in there, being defensive, dread, being uneasy, and being on guard.
.
Nine of Wands also describes feeling or being out of place – not fitting in, and being self-conscious about that.
.

Queen of Wands and Hierophant are right at home with one another: Hierophant is the rules, and Queen of Wands makes the rules, enforces them and exemplifies them. She is the wife, and Hierophant is the ‘ holy’ in holy matrimony. She ‘ runs a clean machine’ – keeps an orderly house, an orderly household too. She manages a business in the same no-nonsense by-the-rules way. And Hierophant represents that clean, orderly approach.
.
Nine of Wands comes along and casts a pall over the serendipity of his fellow cards. He takes the phrases they are accomplishing – things like keeping my corner of the world clean, keeping up appearances, having a middle-class home life, things being peaceful at my place, keeping my home in good order, being the respectable wife or having one, being a married woman, staying safe at home – and adds his spoiler phrases to their story, phrases like: getting on my nerves, feeling out of place about it, being under pressure to, being very self-conscious about, ‘ no matter what,’ being worried, having a bad feeling about what’s out there, misgivings, being on the defensive, suffering through, straining to, fear, dread, unease, on guard.

Two of Wands – This Very Important Person owns the real estate below, and he is on his rooftop looking at it, planning for even more profit. He’s got the world in his hands, is an established businessman, secure. He has money in the bank or is a bank. (Your landlord.) Two of Wands is conservative and is Establishment – in the various ways those words appear.
.
The main interpretation of Two of Wands regards the future – the word future, making future tenses of verbs, and words like ‘expect’ and ‘outlook.’ Another aspect of the future meanings are the long term meanings. Phrases like ‘as long as’ or ‘so good for so long’ also belong to Two of Wands.
.
Another extremely common translate for Two of Wands is security: being secure, feeling secure, a sure thing.
.
Two of Wands is planning, in this picture. So Two of Wands means plan and similar words.
.
Two of Wands is very much about money, finances, financial planning, business plan, profit, budget, as well as the word ‘projected’ when it involves a plan, money, or a money plan. And since Two of Wands means both money and the future, it also means any phrase about both, like: projected income, money in the future, will make money, future profit, future security, going to do well, etc.
Hierophant – You can relax now – the pope is here – nothing bad is happening. When you see Hierophant, it’s business as usual, it’s okay and it’s all right, acceptable, there’s no harm, we’re doing fine, the situation is safe, normal, no harm to it.
.
Hierophant is one of the good cards; it even belongs to the Tarot group that translates ‘good.’ It’s also one of the Establishment-oriented Tarot cards that can translate ‘conservative.’ It means usual, average, middle-of-the-road, middle-class, ordinary, normal, what’s expected and accepted (and acceptable). Hierophant means ‘respectable’ often, and is moral, decent, upfront, and ‘in the real physical world.’ It appears to signal someone in your story can be trusted, is harmless in that setting.
.
The emphasis in Hierophant is the surface, the face of things, official reality and the official story. It’s who you portray yourself as and who everybody and everything portrays itself as. That side of Hierophant grows out of the difference in the public presentation the church makes of its teachings, and the version reserved for those in the know.
Nine of Wands – Dread. That’s our Nine of Wands man: haunted by the past, been through hell and afraid it’s coming back. A wounded soldier who’s still on guard duty is a wonderful way to illustrate both ‘hanging in there’ in spite of misgivings, and to illustrate the hangover we get when we have weathered ordeal experiences and survived them but still don’t trust the environment.
.
Nine of Wands also applies to being edgy, tense, feeling squeamish, expecting the worst, being under pressure, and being afraid the worst will happen. Nine of Wands is your worrywart. The card also appears to represent that which you (or anyone) is worrying over.
.
Nine of Wands describes that ‘hanging in there’ phases we all go through when times are trying and we are being tried by the times. It also shows up for being ‘sick and tired of this’
.
Yeah, Nine of Wands is the kind of Tarot card that immediately sends you looking for a rescue card. Today he is in the company of not one but two cards that say everything is all right and is going to be all right.

Two of Wands and Hierophant are both very secure; Nine of Wands obviously feels insecure. Two of Wands and Hierophant are very Establishment; Nine of Wands is defensive about that. Nine of Wands is scary; Hierophant is ‘ situation normal.’
Two of Wands expects the best but Nine of Wands expects the worst.
.
Tarot cards like Two of Wands and Hierophant in the same sentence sometimes ‘do double duty.’ They mean the same thing in that sentence, so you don’t repeat that phrase. For example, “ You’re going to be fine.” Two of Wands all by itself says that. Hierophant also is ‘ be fine.’ So you only say ‘ be fine’ once … of course. Two of Wands by itself is ‘ so good so long,’ and Hierophant is ‘ so good.’ You don’t have to find another phrase for Hierophant in either of those sentences. “ I’m conservative with my pension money” is another example. Two of Wands is pension, is being secure with money, and it means conservative. Hierophant means conservative. In the same way, Nine of Wands is worry about the future, and Two of Wands is the future. There are several other examples of this overlap of meanings in today’s sentences. Think of this overlap as an echo. An echo that means to indicate which meaning of those cards to use.
.
This spread is a fine example of how two ‘good cards’ gang up on a ‘bad card’ and make a ‘bad card lite’ of it in that sentence. Today we have ‘ Nine of Wands lite’ because both Two of Wands and Hierophant say ‘everything’s all right for sure’ and say ‘everything’s going to be all right ahead.’ They frame Nine of Wands’ dread as being in the past, or as just a feeling. They act as rescue cards today.
.
Nine of Wands shows a soldier with a bandaged head who’s still on guard duty. Here’s what Nine of Wands straight can be like: “You are trapped in a situation that has already harmed you in some way, and you are hanging in there standing your ground as it constantly wears you down. Tension is unremitting and you are uneasy for some good reason that you just have to put up with and live through, or at least that is what you feel you must do: Nine of Wands is Alamo time or Alamo mood.”
.
Hierophant and Two of Wands complement one another intricately along the lines of meaning ‘ a sure thing.’ Hierophant means respectable, official, conservative; Two of Wands means security, financial security, control and financial control. Two of Wands is a plan, an outlook, a projection, and long term.
Hierophant and Two of Wands also complement one another along the lines of Establishment normalcy. Hierophant is religion ( or church); Two of Wands is the bank (or financier, or the man who owns the town). Hierophant is respectability, and Two of Wands is stability.
.
So we have stories about being uncomfortable in comfortable circumstances, which comes across as an invitation to perk the heck up.
