….. …….…… ….. ………, Doesn’t Two of Swords look like it morphed into High Priestess? Same lady, one in her underwear, both sitting on stone benches. Both have the sliver moon in their pictures. Two of Swords has nothing, seems helpless. High Priestess has all the paraphernalia of Kabbalah, wears the crown used for monarchs of both lower and upper Egypt, wears the equal sided cross (intersection of spiritual and physical) and has the book in her lap. You could say it’s the Torah, and you could say it’s Tarot: Tarot is considered a book.
Both Two of Swords and High Priestess are out of action, but in very different ways. Two of Swords can’t, and High Priestess knows better. Two of Swords, you could say, has gone to great lengths to shut influences out; High Priestess is so strongly her own influence that there’s no incoming competition.
Page of Swords represents the competing disrupting influences. Page of Swords is irritated, angry, scared, nervous, defensive, hyper-excited: the disturber of the peace, and the person who has no peace. The agitator, the boat-rocker, the pest.
So our story is about being at peace by not allowing disturbing influences to get to you. This spread also makes the point that spirituality just isn’t exciting.

High Priestess High Priestess represents the feminine principle of receptivity, which has to do with the esoteric concept that being active on one plane means to be receptive or passive on another. ‘Knowing all’ goes along with being active on the spiritual plane (headquartered there). A plane is a zone of influence, a territory native to one aspect of experience (mental, spiritual, emotional, physical). This High Priestess card can mean the spiritual and/or mental plane too – in which case Hierophant (the pope) is likely to show up as the physical plane.
In Tarot practice, High Priestess is female, knowing, quiet, spiritual. High Priestess is taking no action and does not respond or reciprocate (like Four of Swords, who is also associated with meditating, hence spirituality). So watch for High Priestess to tell a woman to quit acting and be quiet in a relationship (to ‘Sit down and shut up’).
High Priestess as a Person Card: As a person, High Priestess is the lady, the mysterious woman, is minding her own business, is sedentary and stationary (stays in one place and doesn’t move around much). As a person, she is the expert or has expertise. Or she just ‘knows all about it,’ whatever the subject at hand is. High Priestess can also translate ‘the other woman,’ probably because she is in one place not doing anything – you know, waiting alone by the phone. (Tarot Verbatim does not make up definitions; it observes them.) Also as a person – and remember this one! – High Priestess can translate just ‘she.’ Often. High Priestess also translates ‘she knows,’ and so does Queen of Cups, another feminine card, as well as Page of Pentacles and Knight of Pentacles … and even Hermit, who has a lot of other things to do besides that.
Two of Swords Two of Swords, the first time you see the blindfolded (like Eight of Swords) woman seated in the middle of the night, alone, on a stone bench in a thin nightdress or underwear, you feel its ‘block’ and its ‘end of the line’ meanings. You can feel the ‘can’t.’ You can feel ‘What’s she doing there?’ too – just like you do the first time you see Eight of Swords, which, yes, has similar meanings.
You can feel the ‘X’ for roadblock made by the crossed swords she holds, and won’t be able to put down safely.
You just know Two of Swords means things like stop, go no further with this, don’t go, no, no way, can’t be done, can’t do that, end. You can feel the quandary, the being in a fix.
And that’s what Two of Swords means … one of the plain and simple Rider Waite Tarot cards. Yes, it surely is one of the negator cards (negative modifiers).
Page of Swords Page of Swords today is all about disturbing the peace and being a distraction. In the present Tarot company, Page of Swords is simply a foil for two other cards that both shut out influences, so he represents an unwelcome influence. He is a bit player here.
The way Page of Swords applies here is both as the irritation to be ignored, and the reactionary feeling that is being blocked.

Page of Swords, weapon raised, whirls around on that grassy knoll so fast his pony tail is flying as he anxiously surveils the surrounding … very vacant for miles around … territory for perceived or real threats. It’s broad daylight but this card evokes that ‘something went bump in the night’ kind of feeling we get. Even the clouds at ground level look jittery.
Page of Swords is all kinds of anxiety! Here we have an angry, defensive, testy, hyperalert and hyper-excited person … all fired up and strung out. Stressed, maybe mad at the world, maybe scared or crazed. Not today, but he is known to be in a jealous frenzy. Page of Swords represents that nervous energy that annoys other people, and that edgy touchy upset and upsetting, irritated and irritating individual we would just as soon not share a room with. Page of Swords is feeling threatened or is actually facing a threat.
Page of Swords also represents similar body states that aren’t negative: being motivated, excited, psyched, thrilled, turned on, challenged, energized, and that ‘can’t wait’ kind of anticipation a pet has about treats … ‘pins and needles,’ we call that.

You don’t have to go to the door just because someone is knocking, and you don’t have to answer the phone. You don’t have to explain or respond or participate … ever. Remember it’s a choice, even if it doesn’t feel like it is. Sometimes silence says more than language does. Yeah, some people are intrusive all the time, but all people are irritating some of the time. Remember, in moments that someone wants to rub his or her internal drama and conflict into the skin of your day, that you don’t have to honor that *reflex to respond* which opens the initial door to the sales pitch.
