Three of Pentacles – What you see here are the parties to a commercial project meeting to settle up the final payment. The blueprint in hand, the builder demonstrates to his clients that this part of the building is built according to it, so he did he part fair and square. The deal is mutual, amicable; the parties are in agreement. Three of Pentacles is people who are on the same side, who are together in heart. The supervising architect also performed according to a contract, not just an agreement, Three of Pentacles assumes. So Three of Pentacles is the main Tarot card that puts the word ‘contract’ into your sentence.

Three of Pentacles’ main applications are: meeting, getting together, a mutual relationship, mutual agreement, all parties doing their part as the others expect, treating others fairly. Three of Pentacles is about negotiating, talking, coming to agreement. Three of Pentacles considers doing business and doing a relationship the same so often that I do too – and you will probably slip into that mode of thinking if you hang around with Tarot Verbatim™.

Note that Three of Pentacles is sometimes about an investment. Also that it is often a legal card because of the coming to agreement after discussion, because that is what a trial or other legal proceedings are: coming to a decision between the parties.

Today, Judgment, which cannot avoid being a legal card, brings out that side of Three of Pentacles.

Judgment – Here you are standing naked on ocean waves in what was a moment ago your stationary coffin, and the sea heaving you is consciousness (and mass consciousness). You heard the blast of that horn and you see an angel still making that loud noise with it: That’s what has awakened you. You are experiencing an epiphany, a new attitude, a new awareness, a very sudden new perspective on things. Suddenly you are at the intersection of the spiritual and the physical realms – the intersection represented by the equal-arms cross attached to the resurrection angel’s horn.

This illustration is all about change … not only change but reverting to a former state, and also going on to the next state. Judgment’s change is usually for the better, since we humans (and earth life in general) have an inborn assumption that being alive is better than not being.

This picture contributes a huge variety of potential applications to a spread. Judgment is definitely NOT not an anchor card.

Judgment means new. A new life, a startup, a new level, a new perspective … etc. That’s the first time around. Judgment also means the second time around: renew, again, next, another, and ‘re-’ anything. The second-time-around concept means ‘a return to the former state,’ which makes Judgment mean recovery. When you recover, you are no longer dead ….

Judgment means a loud noise, and it’s one of the speak/tell/say cards. I don’t think I have to explain that at this point. Judgment specifically means an announcement: a press release, publicity, headline news, startling shift of events, news that changes everything.

Judgment means to realize, to discover, and to have sudden insight. And it also simply means ‘sudden.’ Sudden anything. One of Judgment’s favorite words is ‘sudden.’

Judgment is news. The angel has a big announcement, a headline announcement to make. “Now hear this ….”

Due to the word ‘Judgment,’ Judgment is a legal card, especially referring to verdicts, decisions of the judicial decision-maker, judgments, and to service of papers: surprise.

Oh yeah. Judgment also means surprise, but not today.

Page of Swords – Just think adrenaline for Page of Swords – and being defensive. (And ‘defensive’ brings up ‘defendant.’) Page of Swords is annoying and is annoyed. ‘Edgy’ is a word that belongs to Page of Swords (and King of Wands). He waves a weapon and whirls around on a clear day when he is alone for miles around. Some unseen threat.

And Page of Swords (being adrenaline, remember?) is also being excited, turned on, motivated, hyper, thrilled, and challenged.

Think of the fella or gal on the soapbox of a cause or a belief – the missionary. You gotta join in his or her passion, whether it’s animal rescue, canning, or the latest politician with a promise. Here are today’s words for that sort of thing: annoying, combative, nervous, drives you crazy, aggravating, touchy, upset, and opposition. Also ‘my challenge’ and ‘the issue.’

Page of Swords is also the reaction a ‘civilian’ has to the passion of the missionary: I’m on guard; you have misgivings.

Page of Swords is your Tarot card for jealousy, another place where people get all worked up for nothing.

We get hyper and we get defensive also when we are speculating, whether with our hard-earned coins or our theories about the meaning of life.

“ People we deal with rattle our cages” say Three of Pentacles and Page of Swords. In this spread, we have agreement in Three of Pentacles, and we have umbrage or disagreement in Page of Swords. The other card, Judgment, means a change. So we have stories, stories, stories here today.

And Judgment and Page of Swords say things like ‘ suddenly upset.’ Page of Swords doesn’t always mean ‘ on edge,’ but these three cards say “ A change in our relationship has me on edge.”

Page of Swords also means excitement, though. So we have an exciting relationship or meeting or get-together, exciting news, and even exciting investment.

Three of Pentacles is people meeting together, usually agreeably, but Page of Swords is opposition, and is a challenge. So we have a picture of someone opposing ( Page of Swords) the consensus at a meeting ( Three of Pentacles) by speaking up, possibly loudly ( Judgment).

But Judgment complicates our readings with its ‘before and after’ applications: Judgment and Three of Pentacles describe coming to agreement through talking, as well as saying ‘ realizing we are in this together,’ because Judgment is one of the cards that describe ‘ getting it’ or realization. And of course Judgment is going back, so Judgment and Three of Pentacles describe going back to a relationship, renewing the acquaintance. (As I keep reminding myself: Half (or more) of the answers in Tarot conversations are material from the question, the background, and from previous spreads on the same subject in the same session. (And we have none of that in our bare material on this site here.)

Judgment and Three of Pentacles both have a lot of meanings and applications, so they have even more meanings when they get together – as they do here.

Main meanings for Three of Pentacles are: relationship, fair deal and dealing with, meeting, negotiation, commercial exchanges, doing your part, contract and legal proceedings. Main meanings for Judgment are: change, announcement, returning, new life or phase, noise, legal matters.

People you associate with change you – change you in unexpected ways. Three of Pentacles is people you associate with, and Judgment is a change – a change for the better unless some other card butts in. Since Judgment is also a new awareness, a new perspective – even a new life or level – people you associate with bring out a new you … and that’s challenging, exciting, and/or scary when you add Page of Swords to the mix.

Judgment means change, new life, new phase, enlightenment or sudden awakening, and that includes Judgment’s other application of going back to a former state – which can be going back to a better condition (because the dead are coming to life here). This brings Judgment’s many meanings about renewal and recovery. You have to remember Judgment is both the first time and the second time because there’s new life that is a repeat of having been alive before. Naturally today this applies to going back to a relationship when Three of Pentacles joins in.

By the way, both Judgment and Three of Pentacles are legal cards, so they may describe a verdict in a trial, or a ruling ( announcement) in a legal proceeding.

Three of Pentacles tends to show up more often than other cards, and its meanings come in handy quite often too – the variety of them. Relationship (any kind at all) is the main one, along with agreement, people meeting together as a team, or a meeting to come to a settlement, including legal proceedings. Three of Pentacles is getting along together, and it can be people who have some particular thing in common, like ‘ the ones who are for it.’ It’s about business, commercial transactions, getting paid, contracts and deals. These meanings arise from the story in the picture.

Three of Cups – Judgment – Eight of Swords

….. …….…… ….. ………, Eight of Swords is all about being stuck in a bad place. It means all those words and phrases about being held back: stymied, helpless, blocked, can’t, unable, disabled, shut-in, locked up, contained, damper, stalled, suffocating effect, limited, impossible, stifling … and even dead. Well, next to all that is the release from it; next to death is resurrection or afterlife – in Judgment. Next to being locked in or locked up is being released, being free. If you could choose a card to put next to Eight of Swords, Judgment would be your first choice.

Looking to the remaining card, it too could not be a better choice: Three of Cups is celebrating, enjoying, sharing, being together, and friends.

So our strongest story is being very happy to get out of someplace you were stuck – you or someone else, of course.

It’s interesting that the Tarot cards on either side of Judgment are really elements of its meaning: Three of Cups is the happy rejoicing people; Eight of Wands is the death state.

Three of Cups The story in this picture is that three women (and the card doesn’t always refer to women partners) are toasting the success of their joint venture, a pumpkin patch. So Three of Cups is about celebrating, sharing, sharing profit, shareholders, a team or team members, being friends, enjoying life together, friends getting together, getting along together, agreeing and being agreeable together, the consensus, partying, being happy, feeling good, a business or enterprise that makes a profit, and a meeting of three people. [Yes, like Three of Pentacles, this card will volunteer that three people are involved or are present.]

Getting together for drinks, too. The camaraderie, good feeling, of Three of Cups makes it girls’ night out, dating, a party, party girls or debutantes or socialites or ‘the girl gang.’ Watch for this card to mean lesbian friends too, because one of the women in the picture has her arm around another – but usually that subject will be brought up by the question.

About the consensus: Three of Cups belongs to the consensus theme, like Ten of Cups and, to a little lesser extent, Three of Pentacles. Three of Cups also fits in with the ‘agree’ and ‘agreeable’ theme, like Lovers, Temperance, Ace of Cups, Knight of Cups and Six of Cups.

Judgment The illustration here puts many trunks and branches to Judgment’s meaning tree. You see the angel sounding the alarm that wakes the dead on Judgment Day. You see people come to life after death. You see their coffins floating on a sea (consciousness, mass consciousness); you see the equal-sided cross on the angel’s flag, which stands for the meeting or intersection of the spiritual level with the physical level. You see happy people, and people who are glad to be free (of death of course). And you see the word ‘judgment,’ a legal word.

Judgment is the moment of new birth, of resurrection from a past life form, new life, new phase – the butterfly coming out of the confinement of the cocoon, getting free of the limitations or the box (literally, here in the picture!) you were in; that life-changing eureka epiphany; enlightenment and salvation and inspired life-changing moments; realization, discovery (including ‘discovery’ in the legal sense of investigating and including something coming to light in some investigation); ‘getting it’; that magic moment we drop out of our profile and into a new self, the awakening to new awareness, an outbreak of something, or ‘popping up.’ Judgment is leaving death behind for something new, untried, and we hope better. Judgment emphasizes the moment of realization, the waking up from sleep.

Judgment is a wake-up call … obviously; an alarm; a loud noise. It is also the playing of a musical instrument, especially a horn.

Judgment belongs to the ‘return’ or ‘come back’ theme … reverting to a former condition, state, or place, as the people revert back to being living creatures.

So some of the very frequent and more mundane meanings for Judgment are: again, suddenly, change, sudden change, news, publicity, go back or come back, and any of the words and phrases that mean to announce, say or tell.

As a legal card – which simply grows out of the title of this Tarot card – Judgment is being put on notice; a verdict or decree, or a ruling, including a final ruling. It can be testimony – a statement, what someone said even in a deposition.

Eight of Swords We have an uninjured woman, surrounded by heavy swords barely stuck in wet ground, loosely blindfolded and loosely tied, standing alone, far from the nearest building, in daylight. Sometimes we feel stuck when we haven’t tested the binding … and sometimes the binding is self-imposed.

Eight of Swords shares with Devil the idea that our attachments that limit us are voluntary: The chains are loose around the Adam and the Eve figure in Devil, and the bindings of Eight of Swords are loose too, and no one’s around.

The most general meaning of Eight of Swords is limitations, and a frequent word for that is ‘can’t.’ Eight of Swords can be that ‘I can’t’ or the ‘You can’t’ that vetoes action. It expresses the ‘I can’t’ that really means ‘I don’t want to and am not going to.’

Eight of Swords is trapped, frozen in place and paralyzed into inaction. She is in a fix, and the distant dwelling above on the steep hill can be a hint that the fix is social or family life. But the artist put it almost out of the picture because Eight of Swords is meant to be very general: any kind of limitation at all. It often translates ‘what holds you back.’ Even procrastination fits this Eight of Swords profile: preventing yourself from action. Eight of Swords can be ‘hands are tied’ or ‘tied up in a meeting.’

This card’s helpless feeling makes it the primary card for death. Naturally, its death meaning is infrequent – but real. Eight of Swords can translate ‘fatal’ next to a danger or disease card.

Arising out of its ‘limitations’ set of meanings, and along the lines of its ‘unable to’ meanings, Eight of Swords is about handicaps and disabilities as well as death. Paralysis of any sort (literal or figurative), limitation of movement, being in a cast – especially a full-body cast.

Besides its social meanings, Eight of Swords has some mechanical ones. Eight of Swords also means a container, literally, to be in a container (common for lost-article questions) and to be shut in, and ‘locked,’ including a safe, or a person locked up. Watch for it being advice to lock something up. In this vein, once in a while, Eight of Swords refers to a pen, an enclosure for animals.

So generally, Eight of Swords can mean: stuck, stymied, stifled, impossible, cramped, contained, prevented from, shut down, frozen, dead to, suffocated, ineffective, boxed in, void, defunct, and any such word or phrase.

We tell ourselves we can’t. We tell others we can’t. We don’t always mean it. ‘I can’t do that,’ whether said inwardly or outwardly, means things like ‘I don’t choose to’ and ‘I don’t want to deal with what happens if I do it,’ which includes having failed to do whatever it is. So we are thinking whenever we find ourselves using language that says we are limited, that we specify to ourselves what kind of limitation, and where it comes from.
