Tarot Readings for You for January 13-14, 2018 Weekend©
GUIDANCE What she wants, and what he is or has, don’t jibe. Two assertive people who would otherwise jell, repel. He has too much of something for her, or she wants too much of something from him from his point of view … or both. Mama expects him to be more successful, and wife feels he is too sexy. Mama feels he is her proud son, and wife feels he is full of himself. We look for matches in all sorts of categories, don’t we, to get along?

.
King of Pentacles – We all know this guy. He is the ‘full of himself’ stereotype. Very proud. Manipulative. Sometimes clothes-proud, a dandy. He tends to often translate Studmuffin because he is a sexpot and Italian Stallion – ‘Italian’ because the illustration has his robe flamboyant with all those grapes. And truth to tell, clients sometimes say ‘Yes, he is Italian’ when I use that phrase to mean ‘studly.’
.
Because King of Pentacles is the man with influence, sex appeal, and often money, he may appear as a rich powerful influential man, a VIP or CFO, a mobster or politician. But King of Pentacles is often the guy who dominates the pool hall or runs a restaurant. He is often the boss of whatever scene you are asking about.
.
This is the card that frequently appears when a fellow is speculating about who The Other Man is in his woman’s story. He also appears as the manipulative self-absorbed lover in a woman’s romance story.
.
Eight of Cups – A temporary change of direction in our illustration gets applied very generously to all sorts of switches and changes, including ‘out with the old, in with the new.’ The pilgrim is going to get where he is going, but has to take the long way around a mountain and some streams. He aborts his course, so Eight of Cups stands for the abortion of anything – stands for the plan being scrubbed, stands for a decision not to after all. Keep an eye out for unusual applications for Eight of Cups!
.
Its first-and-foremost meanings are about leaving as the pilgrim abandons his path for a detour. Close to half the time, Eight of Cups appears for dropping out, quitting, walking off, parting company, etc.
.
Really watch out for Eight of Cups wrapping itself around another card’s contribution to modify that to ‘isn’t anymore.’ The meaning of the dominant card appears in between the isn’t and the anymore.
.
Then we have both the idea of going out of your way for something, and being ‘turned off’ by it. Eight of Cups, as a disrupter, will mean either. Or both: Eight of Cups can appear for leaving one way, or one thing, for another – making a switch.
.
He doesn’t pull it off. You didn’t when …. When he doesn’t get to be. Eight of Cups appears sometimes when some factor prevents what would have been. And sometimes it’s a temporary detour, not a sea change.
Queen of Swords – Have you noticed what a ‘female chauvinist sow’ Tarot is? Lots of cards mean all sorts of nuances of bad guys, and this one Queen of Swords stands in for bad women – although the other female court cards have their negative spectrum. Well, Queen of Swords is the bitch, the complainer, the nag. Readers who protest that may find it in their own spreads after they encounter Tarot Verbatim’s™ Queen of Swords.
.
In her illustration, Queen of Swords has a sword in one hand, and her other is extended out in the gesture of ‘gimme.’ ‘Now would be good’ she is saying. I would be tempted to picture Queen of Swords, were I designing a new deck, with her hands on her hips.
.
Our illustration’s story is that this woman grieves her dead child. She is bitter about it. The bitterness spills over into all the militant meanings for Queen of Swords. She also is the mama, which spills over into being the older woman – because some Tarot citizen had to be the old woman, and no one else was. The crone. The older woman, mama, the woman who is bitter about not getting what is rightfully hers (the child), morphs further into the demanding militant nag personality … my ole lady type thing. So here we have a woman holding us up to her standards that we fall short of. I find that concept to be central to Queen of Swords’ meanings – that things aren’t the way they should be, and I am shortchanged.
.
Queen of Swords can be the real victim, or someone who feels martyred in some way – taken advantage of … ‘I don’t get no respect.’
.
But that ain’t all there is to Queen of Swords. She is also the strong woman, the warrior woman, the woman who does not back down, does not give in, and does not suffer fools even if they pay her bills. This Rider Waite Tarot card will appear as advice to a Querant to grow a spine, be strong, take a militant stance.

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES..
Lawyers have a diplomatic term for people who are hard (for them) to handle: ‘strong personality.’ They say it with a half-sneer. Both King of Pentacles and Queen of Swords fall into that category. King of Pentacles is egotistical and self-absorbed. Queen of Swords is not going to be short-changed but is going to ‘ stand up for her rights.’ Each of them can clash with others, and they definitely can make sparks fly as a pair.
.
One would think today’s story would have to focus on their personalities because since they are ‘people cards’ (court cards), there’s no action coming from them, and the other card ( Eight of Cups) simply means all sorts of switches, changes, leaving and detouring. Stories with actual events should be scarce with these three Tarot cards.
.
So focus on their personalities we do. Paired, we have the fellow who is conceited, arbitrary, manipulative, studly, sexy and flamboyant (or any set of those traits) and the gal who is disgruntled, a stickler for high standards, older, assertive, demanding, a nag (or any set of those traits). We have the bastard and the bitch too. So, a militant man and a militant woman have nothing to do with each other.
.
But stories we do have! We have the fellow who finally has the money to move out of mama’s house, and also the mama who’s disgruntled that her proud son didn’t get to be CFO ( yet). King of Pentacles has money, so he is a good provider, but his woman expects and demands so much more – so one of them splits. We have the guy whose flamboyant sexuality is a turnoff to the woman, who disengages. Or he’s just too stylish for a no-nonsense dame. Or his ole lady threatens to leave him for being a player.
.
On the other hand, the lady has a hankering for a ‘ too sexy for my shirt’ fellow, so she leaves someone for that sort of fellow (usually younger, with no money).
.
Here is another angle: Ever since this assertive woman, he is an aggressive man. Or, she is so demanding a guy doesn’t pull off being the dictator with her. We also have him as the mobster or politician victimizing her and getting away with it. Another story that comes out here is that he owes her, he has the money, and he is avoiding her.
.
When finding stories with Eight of Cups in your spread, keep its very wide scope in mind. It’s going off course in all sorts of ways. Course will be resumed, in the illustration, but that does not have to be. So Eight of Cups is the detour, dropping out, or abruptly starting something else. It’s also literally running off the road, especially with Chariot (as vehicle) or Ace of Pentacles (as the road). Eight of Cups can mean ‘ not anymore’ and it can mean ‘ not yet’ and it can mean ‘ didn’t quite make it.’ Eight of Cups is a card to study up on someday.
