………………………     Queen of Swords and Four of Pentacles  are both doing without, and smack in the middle of them is Star – exuberant enthusiastic happiness and upbeat expressions. (Star can mean a performance, and also can simply mean talk, though.) We examine attitudes toward finding oneself labeled a victim and not being comfortable with that. We even witness such a person being upbeat and experiencing and openly expressing joy.

…………………………..    Queen of Swords is the widow, the woman who is sacrificing, or has sacrificed. She can be the martyr complex, the whiner, the bitter bitch, or she can be the long-suffering character-ridden woman of steel. Her claim to fame is holding people up to her high standards. Shades of the Iron Maiden stereotype too. But remember, she can simply be an older woman, and this is the only card in the deck that all by itself means specifically that. Complex card, Queen of Swords – one I could write a book upon. Note that this is one of those cards that just doesn’t cross gender lines. Even when the meaning being used isn’t a person, but a trait, still, it will refer to a woman – widow, mama-bat, whining wench, the nag – all female stereotypes. See the child bas-relief upon her seat there? – Queen of Swords is a woman whose child has died. These days children don’t die as commonly, so she comes up as a widow.

…………………………..    Star is feeling good all over, deliciously happy, and Star is telling all about it. Star can be confessing to a crime, saying ‘I love you’ or tattling – or making a speech, or singing. Star is also someone who will not shut up. Today it is bringing up the complaint mode of Queen of Swords, and contradicting Four of Pentacles close-mouthed policy. Star and Four of Pentacles say ‘not talking about it, keeping it to myself.’ In the illustration, Star is performing a ritual bath (ablution – quite a few religions practice this because you feel so good after-bath). So I think of Star as the feeling you get when you are singing in the shower. That works. By the way, you are in the best of health when you are Star.

 

…………………………..     Four of Pentacles next to Star is a hug next to ‘I love you’ and also says ‘not talking.’ (Four of Pentacles is hunkered down, stymied and stifled: That’s the ‘not talking.’ Four of Pentacles today is doing without (because he is hanging onto his money for dear life), because of the influence of Queen of Swords who is deprived of something she is entitled to (or feels that way). Four of Pentacles is also being quiet, and deep feelings, as Star means heartfelt emotion. Queen of Swords is nagging and Star is talking up a storm. Four of Pentacles and Star contradict one another – the blabbermouth and the quiet-mouthed. Four of Pentacles means ‘to be short of,’ which expands to being, or feeling, inferior, but applies strongly to being short of money, budgeting, and that sort of thing. That’s where we get ‘mama did without,’ but we don’t go any further than that in this presentation. The ‘being or feeling inferior’ docks upon Queen of Swords critical attitude that someone or something isn’t up to her standards. (Namely the performance – Star’s word – isn’t up to her standards, for one thing.) So today Four of Pentacles sits at the heart of a lot of overlapping meanings. It’s easy to know what they are saying, but challenging to separate it all out – sometimes, today, it ain’t happening.

This particular spread is one of the best examples of how two cards can mean what the whole sentence means. It happens a lot here because Queen of Swords and Four of Pentacles both are lacking, and ‘short of.’ Also nagging (Queen of Swords) involves talking, and we have Star meaning happy combining with Four of Pentacles to lesson or cancel out the meaning, and there’s Queen of Swords who lacks happiness all by herself. This spread is a good study for that if you choose to indulge.

Queen of Swords……….. Queen of Swords is one of those complex cards, all of whose meanings in Tarot Verbatim™ it will take you a while to apply comfortably. And, by the way, this is one of the cards Tarot Verbatim™ has a whole different perspective on than the standard view, much like Death and Two of Cups and Six of Wands. Tarot Verbatim’s™ meanings are ‘from the field,’ are not private opinions. (That is how the system works.) Queen of Swords’ illustration indicates she is mourning a dead child, which morphs into being a widow in modern times. She can be a victim, a bitter woman, a whining nag, or a woman whose stern character intimidates mere mortals. ‘Militant’ is one of her words – King of Swords’ too, as a matter of fact. So she can be a female soldier.

Star…………. Star is a babe – a voluptuous and maybe zoftig nude here who is singing as she pours two pitchers into an outdoor pond. Since she is performing a ritual bath (ablution, sometimes a religious rite) and singing, besides meaning feeling good all over and singing in the shower, she means performance, singing, and a gorgeous woman. Today, she is about saying ‘I love you’ and words of encouragement.

Four of Pentacles   …………. Four of Pentacles has a stack of meanings that takes a lot of getting used to, but today we are let off easy. Today, Four of Pentacles is about not talking or not admitting, deep feelings, doing without, lacking, being or feeling inferior, sulking, a hug, holding, and ‘precious.’ The illustration shows a fellow who is hugging himself and his money as he sits in the middle of the road far from a town. Four of Pentacles is constrained in his present Tarot company, a mere shadow of his sad stifled self.

Demanding what you are entitled to (even respect) when you have been self-sacrificing for the sake of others’ happiness labels you as the nag (Mama-bat). ………………….……………………         The first thing you see here is Mama, the family, and the budget or being short of money. You also see the nagging woman, feeling inferior or stifling oneself, and the family. There’s a theme of not having enough and doing without, and there’s happiness. Stories, we got ’em today.

…………………………..      Queen of Swords in Tarot Verbatim™ is reliably the bitch card, and is also the self-sacrificing female of the family, the demanding woman or nag, the woman who holds others up to standards they are not meeting, the woman of strong character, the assertive woman, the militant or stern woman, the Ex … and you can immediately see how these are in the same basket. Queen of Swords is also the widow, and a woman who mourns a dead baby. In her illustration, she has that sword held upright and the other hand outstretched like ‘Now would be good.’ She has that stern put-up face of someone who is feeling martyred. On her chair is a baby’s face.

…………………………..           Four of Pentacles      His illustration covers quite a few otherwise-unrelated categories. Today we are using the ‘doing without’ and the ‘short of money’ ones, mentioning stifling oneself, keeping secrets, and ‘excluded’ categories. ‘Don’t let myself,’ ‘everybody but me,’ ‘in no shape to,’ ‘get the feeling,’ and ‘damper’ are phrases you might not anticipate from these categories. He sits outside of town, clutching his coins, staring straight ahead, all alone in the street.

…………………………..      Ten of Cups      One big happy family, it says. We are united, we are together, we are the good and prosperous ones, the respectable people. This is the family most families project themselves as being, believing other families’ projection and keeping up with it. It most often translates ‘happy,’ as it does today, and ‘everyone.’ It can be any group at all, of any size, anyhow.

……….…………..      Queen of Swords and Four of Pentacles   Queen of Swords and Four of Pentacles There’s an interesting interplay here, in that these two Tarot cards mean both that people are not living up to what she expects of them, and that people do not want to associate with, or talk to, her. She is also dissatisfied or disgruntled with her own inferior status. Queen of Swords and Four of Pentacles also say ‘I won’t let myself complain,’ ‘Long for a hug’ and ‘She keeps the secret.’ You can see how the illustration of Four of Pentacles produces disparate phrases when combined with a given card. (Its full definitions are listed at the end of this article, as usual.)

………..…………..    Queen of Swords and Ten of Cups    Queen of Swords and Ten of Cups Queen of Swords says ‘She wants’ as well as ‘She wants and isn’t getting.’ So here Queen of Swords wants everyone to be happy. It’s also everyone being happy to live with her. ‘I don’t have the house of my dreams,’ and ‘not having a happy marriage’ belong to this pair of Tarot cards – even ‘I am happy without a happy marriage,’ because you can use the meaning of a card more than once in a sentence if it grooves. Since Queen of Swords is famous for doing without, ‘She sacrifices for the house.’ Since Queen of Swords is the widow misses her mate, and Ten of Cups is the marriage partner, ‘She longs for her departed husband.’ How she misses being married, too. ‘People fall short of her standards’ uses the most common meanings of each card. Well, she nags the family too. But ‘Everybody likes Mama, or Grandma.’

………..……………      Four of Pentacles and Ten of Cups      Four of Pentacles and Ten of Cups combine family and lack. Everybody is short of money, this says. I restrain myself (hold myself back, Four of Pentacles) so people will like me or be happy with me (Ten of Cups). Feeling short-changed or feeling inferior in the family: You see that, right? Four of Pentacles is keeping a secret, so these to say ‘keeping the family secret.’ Can you see ‘A hug from my husband’ as well? Ten of Cups, as ‘marriage partner’ is either wife or husband, and Four of Pentacles’ hugging himself makes that meaning for it. ‘People fall short’ and ‘ a damper on happiness’ and ‘we are all restraining ourselves.’ ‘Everybody but me’ isn’t immediately apparent: Four of Pentacles is outside of town, excluded, remember?

 

All of us are not as happy as we could be. There’s always something more that would be better, you know? Guess what? – you can be happy without enough; you can be happy without the home life, or the house, that you really want. You can be happy for no damn reason. They say living well is the best revenge, even. We make it a study today that sacrificing your own happiness for others may make you snarly enough to alienate your beneficiaries! Queen of Swords………     Queen of Swords’ face is set in a stern resigned displeased and assertive expression. She isn’t getting what she is entitled to, isn’t being respected. Her high standards are not being met by you people. She is usually some kind of victim, or feels she is. This is how Queen of Swords comes to mean ‘Plaintiff’ or ‘Complaint’ in a court case. This is the widow everybody takes advantage of, or a woman who misses a dead child or baby, or an older woman who isn’t being respected. On the other hand, Queen of Swords is the strong woman, the assertive woman. It can be advice to assert yourself, demand what you are entitled to.

Four of Pentacles .…………    Here’s a guy sitting outside of town holding onto his money, staring straight ahead, hugging himself. This illustration applies several ways. It is about withholding and holding onto, and about internal processes – gut level – often translating ‘deep down.’ It is about being shy too. It means privacy and guarding privacy, and it means ‘secret’ and keeping anything secret. It means not telling, not divulging, not talking, and ‘shut up.’ It means stifling, suppressing or blocking feelings or anything else. It means ‘insufficient,’ not enough, not very, and not much. It is being low key, quiet, keeping to yourself. It is about not having enough, or not spending enough, money: budget, thrifty, cheap, saving money, broke, stingy, holding onto the money, “Don’t spend” or ‘not worth it’ or not paid what you’re worth,’ as in ‘underpaid.’ Sometimes it’s a hug. Watch for it in medical questions; it means internal there too.

Ten of Cups     ……….   is ‘us,’ ‘we’ and ‘everybody.’ All of us, the whole family – any group that isn’t sinister and is well-adjusted or civilized. Ten of Cups is unity and happiness. It is one of the (positive) marriage cards, so it represents a couple. You also see a home there, a house. ‘Married with children’ is one of its flagship phrases because of the requisite boy-and-a-girl prancing in front of the house graced by the rainbow. Ten of Cups is also the good life, the prosperous life of the suburbs.
