………………….…………………… Both Three of Cups and Three of Wands are making money, and Three of Cups is sharing it. Six of Wands is about sharing too, but, there’s always something hidden in Six of Wands, which often is playing a role, acting as if, faking it, putting one’s best foot forward, pretending, going along with, and getting people or someone to go along with. Six of Wands can be the mooch too, or the stockbroker that gets a cut when you make money but doesn’t share your losses from his or her advice. But sharing happiness is just as much what today is about as sharing money – more-so, even. The main message today is ‘face,’ that it pays to make the best of it, to keep as tony an image as we can, and even to dress the part we look forward to playing. We are using the very best of Six of Wands’ meanings because he is in such good company today, on his very best behavior.
………………………….. Six of Wands‘ pure meaning is about betrayal and about winning the battle and losing the cause. It is about a victory, but always one that isn’t what it seems. ‘Agenda’ is a key word for this card in Rider Waite. It can represent someone ‘out to get you.’ Pictured is King Richard III’s kidnap by Arabs he was fighting, covertly arranged by the next in line for England’s throne. This card can warn you of a false friend, as Two of Cups can. In application, the card does not have to be about that dark a story, of course. In application, the emphasis is usually on persuasion (getting someone to go along with something, or someone getting you to go along with something), pretense (acting the part, role, face, fitting in with the group), and parasitic people(taking advantage, taking the credit, mooching – which is sharing in others’ or another’s income and assets unfairly – sucking up or riding the coat tails of a more enterprising person, being a con artist even. Look at the expression on the horse’s face. Does it remind you of the horse in Sun, who has an obvious agenda of his or her own?
………………………….. Three of Cups is sharing with people you can and do trust. The presence of this card takes the sting out of Six of Wands – it negates the ‘double-cross’ aspects of Six of Wands, and brings out its ‘fitting in and being a part of the team’ aspects. Being able to make these distinctions is part of expertise in Tarot reading. Three of Cups are fashionable women who team up to do things together … the girl gang, the girlfriends. It is also investors (doesn’t have to be female ones) who jointly put money into an enterprise and share the profit. This is both a business and a social card, like Three of Pentacles is. Both Three of Cups and Three of Pentacles very often speak of a group of three people: watch for that. You can count on Three of Cups to not have a dark side, even when it is in bad company.
………………………….. Three of Wands is an anchor card, one of the best. An anchor card is one that has few and well-defined meanings so that you look where it is in the spread and can unravel the message quickly. Three of Wands’ picture says it all: Your ship is coming in. It says ‘It’s profitable’ and ‘making a profit.’ It says that, whatever you are asking about, its future is assured. It says you have something to look forward to. It is also about waiting, as in ‘just wait for it.’ Three of Wands is the future, and is one of the cards that in Tarot Verbatim™ can simply make another card future tense.

Six of Wands and Three of Cups Six of Wands and Three of Cups both mean share, and both are about sharing money (very different perspective on that) and both are about ‘being one of them.’ Three of Cups is sharing with openhearted trust; Six of Wands means sharing through being taken advantage of, or ‘a piece of the action’ kind of situation. Fake it (Six of Wands) until you make it (Three of Cups as prosperity and enjoying life). Act like (Six of Wands) you already have the good life (Three of Cups). Act like (Six of Wands) you are having a good time (Three of Cups). He gets his cut (Six of Wands) when the investors take their profit (Three of Cups). He knows the tricks (Six of Wands) and shares them with us (Three of Cups). He gets us to (Three of Cups) go in with him so we all profit (Three of Cups). Six of Wands …….. Six of Wands shows a victory wreath on a pole, and a horseman wearing the leaves of victory upon his head. The horse is covered and maybe has ‘a look on his face.’ Many readers adopt this as a victory card, just as they adopt Two of Cups as a love card. But both of these cards have a pronounced dark side in Tarot Verbatim™, especially this Six of Wands one. Why? The story is the abduction of King Richard III who was captive of Arabs all his life as a result of pursuing them in a battle he won, all of which was arranged by someone who wanted to be king in his place – and was. So Six of Wands involves an agenda and/or a pretense. The pretense can be simply fitting in, playing your role, going along with other people’s roles, face, persuading or enticing people to agree with your position, or going along with them and agreeing with theirs.

Three of Cups …………. Three of Cups is sharing, camaraderie, girlfriends, making a profit, pooling money and/or resources to accomplish something together and splitting the proceeds afterward, and having a good time, including dating and partying. You see three women toasting their successful harvest together, obviously close friends.

Three of Wands …………. Three of Wands is one of the very simplest cards in Rider Waite. You see a well-dressed man watching the ships come in, waiting. (Yes, that’s supposed to be a body of water, not a desert – printer’s error that they never correct, same as you see on the horn in Judgment, where the color of the skin invades the lips and the mouthpiece part of the horn.) So Three of Wands is income, profit, money coming in, waiting, and a good future. It also simply refers to the future and makes a nearby verb future tense.

LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
.………………. In the middle, people are a team, are on the same page, have mutual interest, and are having a great old time – and Three of Cups is also ‘the girls,’ the successful women. To the right is a strategy and a purpose: deliberate plan or program – and the manager, the success – mostly the successful man today, as Chariot often is. To the left of this mutual satisfaction and fun is being out for yourself or self-interest, and adapting yourself to the social scene to get them to join your program, project or party. So we have stories. Stories about influencing others to benefit your own success.
…………………….Six of Wands can always be ‘up to something.’ Acting against your own best interests as well as getting others to act against theirs. Strategy and deniability, propaganda and getting people to go along with your agenda, or subverting theirs: That’s Six of Wands. Mistrust, malarkey, betrayal and b.s. Keep an eye out for getting sucked into something. (This is the leading card for getting drawn into a cult, for instance.)
But he doesn’t have to be subversive; he can merely be about ‘face,’ putting your best foot forward, ‘fake it until you make it,’ adapting to the ways of the people around you, getting along with others, seducing or being seduced, influencing or being influenced … and joining. Joining is a large part of the classical meaning of Six of Wands. Being a member.
What seems like a victory, isn’t, but is a trap. ‘Winning the battle and losing the war’ would be a good title for Six of Wands. This is the story of how Richard III, King of England, spent his life as a pampered prisoner of Arabs when he was captured chasing Arab soldiers in a victorious battle. Now you see where those meanings come from.
But this is Tarot Verbatim™. Every other system of Tarot I have encountered has this card as a victory. (I suspect my deviant meanings like this one, which work, will leak into the tarotverse gradually.)
…………………….Three of Cups is everybody getting along, getting together, being in agreement socially (camaraderie), celebrating, being a team, profiting, and being the kind of success that makes you in some way ‘one of the beautiful people.’ It’s dating and partying, and girls’ night out. To go along with that segment of its application: Today we have the seduction or strategy in Six of Wands, and we have the successful man with The Car too.
The successful man is also the manager, project manager, strategist and leader, and Three of Cups is also the successful team, so we have a work application as well as a social application in our stories.
……………………Chariot is the field manager, the leader who is hands-on responsible for winning, who uses any and all means, fair or foul, practical or magical, to win. So both Chariot and Six of Wands are about strategy. Chariot is achievement, accomplishment and, of course, winning. Chariot is the special forces of his day. Look that up some day, it’s very fascinating. Chariot is success (not just successful). Chariot is being responsible. Typically, Chariot is a hard-driving Type A person. Determination and purpose belong to this Tarot card in Rider Waite.
Chariot and Six of Wands are both about strategy – in very different perspectives. Both are about what serves your purpose (or whoever’s purpose). Chariot is the project manager who gets the crew to produce. Six of Wands, on the other hand, is more likely to be influencing someone against his or her own advantage.
Three of Cups and Chariot are both successful. Three of Cups is getting together as a team to produce, and sharing the profit. Chariot is being the person in charge, being the hands-on agent responsible for that success.
We talk about social strategy today. The type of person you are determines, in large part, how successful you are. How (not just how well) you get along with people – your style and how that style fits your setting – has a lot to do with your chances of success in a given venue. Our message today is to consciously figure out these factors as they apply to you, adopt and act upon your winning strategy for that setting for who you are inside. Being crazy is an advantage in some venues, and some people have got ahead by looking the part of a failure … it reassured a superior, for instance.

Six of Wands is winning the battle and losing the war: King Richard III is captured when he chases a defeated enemy, and spends his life in captivity to Arabs that the fellow who takes the throne over pays to keep Richard as a prisoner. Appearances are Deceiving, Six of Wands is saying, which includes fraud, cheating, propaganda, disloyalty, acting on self-interest, pretense, fair-weather friends, double-cross and theft by pretense. I won’t repeat the litany here.
