….. …….…… ….. What a story today’s three Tarot citizens have to tell! First, Ten of Swords, there’s a disaster.
Second, Sun, we are free of that disaster: We get out; we leave the house or the place of it. See the little boy leaving the limitations of the house rules?
Third, Nine of Pentacles: We are doing just fine; we are independent.
Surviving (Nine of Pentacles) fiascoes (Ten of Swords) is what puts you in control of your kingdom (Nine of Pentacles). What doesn’t kill you (I think the Marines say this one?) strengthens you. Getting out of (Sun) a terrible fix (Ten of Swords) is what gives you self-confidence (Nine of Pentacles). So both Sun and Nine of Pentacles suggest ‘survivor,’ although they don’t exactly – especially taken singly – mean that. ‘Eau de survival‘ there.
One’s immune system is strengthened by the infections it overcomes in the same way that one’s character is strengthened by the hurts it has survived or even outlived. That is today’s message.

Ten of Swords Ten of Swords is one of those really obvious Rider Waite Tarot cards, isn’t it? Stabbed in the back, laid down and done in. Ten of Swords obviously means betrayal, humiliation, disappointment, being ‘done in,’ suffering, hurting, being ‘down and out’ and any other kind of awful and devastating experience one can experience. The illustration (being done in; swords surrounding the body) reminds us of Eight of Swords – which has similar meanings.
Sun Sun is you getting out from under whatever restrictions hold you back, but Sun is also recklessly abandoning legitimate restraints upon your behavior. You see the juvenile escaping from the house (and its rules) to cavort upon the back of the pony who does not tolerate this foolishness. Sun is being free, having fun, being on vacation; but Sun is also violating norms that only a kid would defy.
Nine of Pentacles Nine of Pentacles is survivor mode. She has been there and done that, learned from it, and is now in command of the the life she has carved out for herself. That doesn’t mean (necessarily, of course) that she is powerful from other people’s perspective: She is in command of her own world, her own circumstances. She is independent. She has a niche she is comfortable in.
The snail in the illustration says she does things at her own leisure. The falcon (Yes, that’s what that bird is meant to represent.) indicates – once again – she has a life of enough leisure to devote to a hobby (falconry) in the middle of an afternoon.

GUIDANCE Something terrible that was to have happened is averted. Losing can be a gain (and not just losing weight, either). What we have here is a followup to yesterday’s story about the meeting with the surprise that was for the better. ‘Ding-dong the wicked witch is dead’ and ‘It’s darkest before sunrise’ are flagships from today’s readings. We talk about relief being a thrill, like when you quit hammering your head. There’s a tad about ‘gonna do it anyway because it’s fun’ too. But we are about survivors’ joy, mostly.

We have both ‘Going to do it and be sorry later’ and ‘So glad the worst did not happen,’ and even ‘Glad they bit the dust for my own sake.’ A tragedy for one group is another group’s party time. I feel fingers crossing as I read these sentences, but I also see a break in the clouds and a happy ray of sunshine coming through the hole.

Ten of Swords is what I consider ‘worst card in the deck.’ You always look for a relief or a rescue card when you see Ten of Swords, the fellow who is stabbed in the back ten times and laid out unattended in the mud. Its common meaning is any kind of disaster or humiliation, but it can simply mean self-pity or being ‘shot down’ socially. Today Sun comes to the rescue of the Ten of Swords event. Sun means it’s averted, or you cheer up, or you got out of the restriction somehow.
Rider Waite Tarot is established to have consistently violated the Laws of Random Distribution when the person shuffling had a particular thing in mind, science lectures I heard said. Ten of Swords and other very heavy-potential cards do not cluster when you ask questions. Only time they clustered in a 14-card spread, in 35 years of steady practice, was when my house was going to be burned down and nothing I could do would save it. I knew it was coming, dreamed of it repeatedly just how it would happen, and my attempts to avert it were fruitless. Those spreads said ‘You’re doomed with all lost, but you will survive.’ And it was true. I have always wondered how the distribution would go if a machine shuffled the cards: Nice experiment.
………………………….. Sun is one happy fella. Stands for joy, fun, breaking loose from any sort of restriction, play and vacation and recreation, freedom and childhood or child. Sun is also the callous reckless bratty type person and the playboy. Recklessness is one of the trunks on its meaning tree. What you see is a boy tyke who has escaped from the house naked to play bareback on a pony who hates this and is ready to do something about it. Sun can be about ‘paying the piper’ like that but its emphasis is on the fun phase, not the penalty phase. Here, Ten of Swords is the penalty.

Three of Wands points ahead to the future in a hopeful and reassuring way because it means ‘Your ship comes in,’ which is to say money or profit or some looked-forward to event is on its way for sure. The ‘for sure’ is part of Three of Wands’ meaning. I mentally title this card ‘for sure in the future.’ You see a patient well-dressed merchant watching and waiting for his ship to come in with his profit, his cargo, or both. The idea is income or a cash flow, not a one-time thing. Three of Wands means ‘steadily,’ ‘continually’ and things like ‘from now on.’ Would like to have a stained-glass front door with this card’s illustration.
……….………….. Ten of Swords and Sun Ten of Swords and Sun are quite the contrast, and you see that all over these sentences. Ten of Swords is pain and suffering, losing, being betrayed, a crash, even the death of something or someone, humiliation …. Heck self-pity is its high point! Sun is relief from all that, or being glad about that (enjoying pain, usually someone else’s), having fun or being a fun-loving person. It’s also a child, brat or playboy. Sun is being uninhibited or letting your hair down – but not today. Go to ‘2-Card Combinations’ for the phrases that these two cards make. More of them than you would think. x..

Ten of Swords and Three of Wands Ten of Swords and Three of Wands say after what you have been through, there’s good things coming, or that suffering is going to be worth it, or going to be rewarded. They also say ‘going to crash,’ but the optimistic bent of Three of Wands requires a stronger negative card to overcome its optimistic prediction – and of course that’s not the case today.

……………………… Sun and Three of Wands Sun and Three of Wands say: Going to be free, going to be happy, the income that makes you happy, relief is on its way, getting and staying out from under the restrictions. Sun is fun, relief, freedom from restrictions, happy. Ten of Wands is ‘for sure in the future, and continuing. Each of these two mean the future is better: Sun, because we are out from under strictures; Three of Wands because that’s what it intrinsically means.

Ten of Swords……… Ten of Swords is one of those Rider Waite Tarot cards that you know the full meaning of the first time you lay eyes on it. Betrayal, loss, victimization, terrible, disappointment, pain and suffering, crash, done in, etc. He lies alone with ten swords pinning him to the ground. Humiliation and self-pity are Ten of Swords’ high points.

Sun …………. Sun has a plethora of meanings, from this one scene. Today its fun and enjoyment ones are featured, and its reckless ones and callous ones are dampered. The ones we use now are the ones that contrast and cancel out Ten of Swords, and that is because Three of Wands tells you this story is heading to a good future. Three of Wands …………. Three of Wands is simple: You see him waiting for his ship to come in, and we all use that phrase and know what it means. Three of Wands is one of the cards that means future and creates future tense in your spread. It means phrases like ‘from now on’ and ‘continuing’ or ‘steadily,’ and it refers to income or any kind of cash flow. It mainly indicates that good things are ahead, that the future is going to be all right.

Put him next to Five of Pentacles, and he is nobody. He even stands for opinion and viewpoint. Page of Pentacles often translates ‘He’ or ‘think’ or ‘He thinks.’ You see him hold his pentacle before his face and study it deeply. Yes, he can be a student – I almost forgot.

Ten of Swords …………. Oh my, it’s all over and I utterly failed – ignominious demise. The worst of times, the downside, the hellhole. Personally, I think this is the worst card in Rider Waite. Whenever it appears, I look for a nearby card to invalidate it wreckage, or at least take the edge off of it. You see a fellow on the ground with ten knives in his back and a black sky. Betrayal is obviously one of its meanings … you know, ‘stabbed in the back.’

Sun ………. Sun is ‘School’s out’ and ‘Let’s party.’ Sun is relief and release and getting out from under whatever restricts you. You see the boy who sneaked out of the house and its rules to play, naked, on the wicked pony. Never mind that the pony is going to do the tyke in: That isn’t the point of this Rider Waite card in Tarot Verbatim™ – it just isn’t. However, ‘reckless’ and ‘heedless’ are two of its translates.
