Eight of Wands
You can count on Eight of Wands; it is an anchor card. It has few meanings, and they are ‘old reliables.’ Three main branches hath the Eight of Wands meaning tree:
(1) It makes plurals.
(2) It refers to any communication at all, written or verbal or any data – it even can say ‘writing’ as a verb. It means text or document, and even means ‘texting.’
(3) Eight of Wands means ‘increasingly’ and ‘more and more’ in all sorts of ways. This Tarot card in Tarot Verbatim adds suffixes like ‘-er,’ ‘-iest,’ and ‘-ier.’
Besides these, Eight of Wands often means ‘quickly’ or similar words, and it sometimes refers to movement – as today when it says ‘coming at you.’
Eight of Wands means ‘one after another,’ means ‘over and over again,’ means ‘another’ and means ‘to repeat,’ too.
It makes plurals because there’s one board after another, and that’s also how it means all the ‘increasingly’ or ‘one after the other’ synonyms. The boards are flying through the air fast, so Eight of Wands means quickly. Occasionally it will refer to flying or being airborne.
Wheel of Fortune
Although its main meaning is destiny and the coincidences of karma, Wheel of Fortune is also luck, miracle, a windfall or jackpot, a chance and taking a chance, a chance or opportunity, ‘wonderful,’ and the best thing that ever happened. This ‘best thing’ can be in retrospect rather than the ‘wish is granted’ you get from Nine of Cups. Wheel of Fortune can simply translate forms of the word ‘happen’ – often.
The Wheel of Fortune illustration looks like a roulette wheel and the iconic animals and angels with books suggest spiritual influences on what happens in what we call ‘the real world,’ the physical reality.
Queen of Wands
Queen of Wands is the sensible woman, the wife and mother, the manager – the married woman and the woman he married. She is able, she is competent; she is skilled. She keeps order in both her personal life and in her surroundings, and she is all about having a place of her own, a niche of her own, a house of her own: She is established.
This is not a glamorous w- oman; this is a no-nonsense dame. No pretenses. She is the main wife card, the housewife too, and that is how King of Wands becomes the main husband card.

Eight of Wands and Wheel of Fortune also say ‘one lucky coincidence after another,’ with Eight of Wands being ‘one after another’ and Wheel of Fortune being, as usual, the lucky coincidence. Wheel of Fortune is also opportunity, and Eight of Wands can simply make it say ‘opportunities,’ adding the plural and disappearing.
Queen of Wands is the practical and pragmatic dame with her head screwed on straight, and she will keep you and yours straight too because she is the manager. Put Wheel of Fortune next to her like we have here, and she is a miracle-worker.
When she is in charge, things happen fast too – because Wheel of Fortune is ‘happen’ and Eight of Wands is ‘fast.’ Happen fast, that’s a common phrase for us to remember here.
Wheel of Fortune and Queen of Wands say ‘lucky woman,’ so they also say ‘lucky to have that wife or woman.’
Eight of Wands is talk, so you talk to your mother when Queen of Wands joins Eight of Wands – or your wife, or the manager. Wheel of Fortune says you are lucky to. Wheel of Fortune can make Eight of Wands ‘wonderful things to say,’ with Wheel of Fortune being wonderful, and Eight of Wands being both the ‘things’ and the ‘to say.’ (You can double up on meanings like this if it makes a nice natural statement.)
Queen of Wands is ‘home,’ so Wheel of Fortune brings the idea of luck to house or home, so ‘a chance to have a home of your own.’
Eight of Wands has another easily overlooked talent: It can add the gerund form, the ‘-ing’ form to indicate a continuing process (like Two of Pentacles does). So it turns Queen of Wands having her house in order to ‘getting her house in order.’
Eight of Wands can be paperwork (the writing, the documents, etc.), and Queen of Wands is the woman with the ability to manage, so you have ‘Her wonderful ability to manage the paperwork. Queen of Wands is the ‘her ability’ and the ‘manage’ here. Eight of Wands is the paperwork. And naturally, Wheel of Fortune is ‘wonderful’ again.

Ten of Cups
Ten of Cups shows the stereotype of ‘the good (suburban) life’ and pictures the kind of respectability money can buy. Like Ace of Pentacles, it links having money with being good. Here you have the dream home on some acres with a rainbow over it, a boy-and-girl child dancing with one another, a couple embracing with arms lifted to heaven.
Three of Wands
Three of Wands is that couple’s continuing prosperity, the certainty of their good future. Three of Wands dispenses future tense to all it touches, means income, means ‘continuing,’ and shows someone waiting for his ship (that he is looking at) to come in – so Three of Wands is also ‘waiting.’
Hierophant
Hierophant also is about the respectable end of things, things as they should be, and fitting in or conforming. You can think of Hierophant as normalcy bias. It often translates: right, should, ought to, proper, and normal. It means okay, acceptable, and up to standards too. It has much more moral overtone than Ten of Cups, since it’s churchy – the illustration shows the pope doing a ceremony. Emphasis in Hierophant is behaving, conforming, things the way they should be, protocol and curriculum type things: the official reality, the way things are. Things the way they should be includes safety. (If you ask whether something awful will happen, Hierophant says ‘no,’ that things are okay.)
Hierophant is also labels and names – which comes from its ‘official’ branch of meanings. Also coming from the ‘official’ branch of meanings is ‘entitled,’ which is really ‘rightfully belonging to.’
Three of Wands with Hierophant says there’s good times ahead. When you hitch them up to Ten of Cups, you get ‘Everybody’s going to be all right’ because Ten of Cups is everybody.

Ten of Cups and Hierophant mean a lot of the same things, and are in the same groove. Ten of Cups is normal or good people with the same mindset, the human group from couple to international in scope, who are respectable and not sinister. (So Ten of Cups would represent the Moral Majority or a group of animal rescuers, and it’s Ten of Pentacles that would represent the mob or any bunch of troublemakers.) Ten of Cups is ‘the folks’ and it means home, house and marriage – see the illustration.

Three of Wands
Here’s maybe the very simplest, most obvious, Rider Waite Tarot card. A merchant all dressed up watches the ships come in that carry his money and new merchandise. That’s you, today. Your ship is coming in. Three of Wands is income or money coming in, and is anything good ahead. Three of Wands puts a future tense to another card’s verb or adds ‘will’ or ‘will be’ to your sentences. When Three of Wands says the check is in the mail, the check is in the mail. This card in Tarot Verbatim™ also means waiting, or is advice to ‘just wait.’.
Ace of Pentacles
You see a straight road of the same color as the gold in the handful of it, above. Ace of Pentacles is yet another Rider Waite Tarot card that links having money with being right, religious, or spiritual. The lilies that begin the road, and the rose arbor at its end of course represent respectively purity and success. The gold is of course the money part. The hand with gold in it says ‘success’ and ‘has money.’ You can see how ‘You’re on the right track’ belongs to Ace of Pentacles.
You can also see ‘the straight and narrow’ of Christianese in this illustration. ‘The middle way’ is what that’s called in Buddhism, and other religions have their own phrase for behaving yourself and doing right. So Ace of Pentacles does have a religious application.
In application in your Tarot work, Ace of Pentacles translates: yes; correct; perfect; best; success or succeed; a road, route or street or even an alley; straight, including go straight; a course; the way; path; possession (of anything, any form, including being possessive), paying or receiving money; funding or funds; valuable, precious, expensive; the price.
Ace of Cups
The complex illustration depicts human consciousness channeling the divine spirit into mass consciousness. A large body of water represents mass consciousness in spiritual writings and spiritual art. Since the dove and the wafer and the ‘W’ are specifically Roman Catholic, it depicts a human channeling Holy Spirit. The five streams out of the fountain represent five senses of the human, or the ‘five humors (bodily fluids)’ of Middle Ages days.
The flow of the water has a lot to do with many of Ace of Cups’ meanings and applications. ‘Go with the flow’ belongs to Ace of Cups, and it can mean any seepage, leak, loss of fluid, and flow of blood. It also applies as ‘to go along with’ and to cooperate or cooperation itself. Ace of Cups is one of the cards that means agreement or ‘to agree’ or be agreeable to. So it means ‘approved’ and ‘approval’ as well.
Ace of Cups means ‘good.’ Anything good. This brings up good health, which Ace of Cups solidly means. ‘All benefit and no harm’ is a slogan I use for Ace of Cups, and of course it means ‘benefit’ and ‘beneficial.’ So Ace of Cups is one of the ‘good guy’ theme. Watch for it to mean ‘not harmful’ – even the GRAS (generally recognized as safe) phrase that makes food legal. And speaking of that, Ace of Cups also translates ‘pure’ and ‘purity,’ including in the same application as the GRAS example – so once in a while it will refer to an instrument saying some substances is pure-whatever-it-is.
Ace of Cups is the main ‘love’ card. Love is a huge chapter in Ace of Cups’ book, probably growing out of ‘God is love.’ (I say ‘probably’ because: Remember, Tarot Verbatim’s™ meanings arise from asking questions with known answers to determine what cards mean, so its meanings are not arbitrary or based on numerology, astrology, or any dogma not Tarot’s own.) Love, and specifically true love, unconditional love. It means kindness, being helpful or helping too, of course.
Peace is another chapter in Ace of Cups’ book, also probably arising from the God part, as well as from the flow part. Along with peace comes relaxation, ease, easy, and comfortable.
Ace of Cups is associated strongly with female gender. If you ask the gender of a baby, this card says ‘female.’ It means female love too – as in the female loves, or love the female.

Three of Wands is income and money coming to (you); Ace of Pentacles is a large sum of money and possessing it (and success, and being on the right track). Ace of Cups says ‘It’s all good.’
What a spread: Two cards about perfection – (Ace of Pentacles – Ace of Cups). Ace of Cups means perfect love, peace, good health, all things good, to be good, to go along with or cooperate, to be helpful, beneficial, and God or God’s helpful presence. And Ace of Pentacles means perfect, right, being right, the right path and the right way to (whatever).
So step right up here, ladies and gentlemen, there’s God and love and good health (Ace of Cups), money and success (Ace of Pentacles), and it’s all coming your way as we speak (Three of Wands).
Here we have a cascade of good things. Three of Wands says good things are coming – its main meaning. Ace of Pentacles says ‘you have it in your hand, and says it’s perfect and right. Ace of Cups is all good and nothing bad, and it’s easy as well. (And Ace of Cups shows these good things in your hand, too.)
Both Three of Wands and Ace of Pentacles are about money. Three of Wands is income or money coming in; Ace of Pentacles is having money (sometimes, paying money).
Ace of Pentacles, with its ‘right way’ and ‘Path’ meanings, is potentially religious/spiritual, where Ace of Cups is overtly religious/spiritual.
Ace of Pentacles means success, and Ace of Cups is ‘easy.’ They also say ‘The easy way is the right way’ and ‘Succeed by going with the flow’ and ‘rewarded for cooperating.’
Ace of Pentacles (perfect) and Ace of Cups (true love) together are perfect love, the real thing. With Ace of Cups meaning ‘easy,’ these two cards say: easy money, easy way to, the easiest route. Perfect comfort, too.
Everywhere you turn, with these three, it’s all good. The three Tarot cards together say: It’s going to be all good.

Death
Death’s illustration shows the dead king on the ground, the grieving family kneeling, the bishop’s possessing the crown to bestow upon the next head of state, death personified in black armor carrying a black flag with an emblem of a rose. Despite all this, Tarot Verbatim™ persists in using this Tarot card strictly as any negative modifier at all, and meaning ‘the end.’ Since Tarot Verbatim’s™ meanings are strictly derived from experience – field trials, you could say – there’s no arguing with this. Just be aware other systems vary from Tarot Verbatim’s™.
Ace of Pentacles
Ace of Pentacles depicts the idea that goodness is rewarded, that being on the right path brings money. Hmmm. You see the right path in gold, very straight and narrow, lilies (purity) to begin, and a huge arbor of roses (victory) to end. In case you don’t get THAT, a hand with a pile of gold coins is suspended over said gold path. In real life, Ace of Pentacles is money, being correct or right, the right path, a road (any kind), reward or credit, and ‘yes.’
Fool
Fool’s illustration bears some explanation. This young person skips to cliff edge, not looking where he is going, his dog prancing along. He is on a trip on foot with only a small purse, no provisions for him or the dog, and carries a white rose (purity, spirituality) in his hand. (He should meet Queen of Cups.) Fool is the zero, which suggests ‘nothing’ and being a place holder rather than having a real presence.
Fool means ‘to be free of’ and even ‘to be not there’ or absent. It can translate ‘nothing’ or ‘having no.’ The underlying idea is that a person who lives in spiritual reality is oblivious to physical hazards, and is exempt from their harm. (Do not try this at home.)

Ace of Pentacles is being on the right track or path, success, money, what’s right or correct; and it means ‘yes’ as the first self card in a Celtic Cross spread. Fool and Death together are tricky because in Tarot Verbatim™ Death is any negative modifier and Fool often means a lack of something since it means to be free, and therefore ‘to be free of’ anything. Death is an end and Fool is a start (since it is the zero). Although most Tarot systems consider death a change – ‘The king is dead, long live the king,’ don’t expect that in Tarot Verbatim.
Ace of Pentacles exemplifies the idea that being good is rewarded, that goodness is associated with money. You see the straight path in gold, lilies at its beginning (purity) and a rose arbor of victory at its end. In case you don’t get THAT point, a hand with gold in it is over the gold path. In use, Ace of Pentacles’ most common meanings are: money, to pay or receive it; being on track or on the path; right and correct; a road, literally; and being rewarded or getting credit for something.
Death is any negative modifier, and it means ‘the end’ or ‘ends up.’ The times it does translate ‘death,’ either death is the subject of the inquiry, or it does not refer to a death that would bring grief, often meaning the death of a thought or a thing. Usually, you see this Tarot card being: no, not, isn’t, can’t, don’t, won’t, and such words, and never. Death is what you love to have in a spread that has a ‘bad card’ because it makes, say, Ten of Swords, mean ‘not a disaste
Fool today is about freedom, not caring, and ‘no reason’ mainly, today.
The illustration bears some explanation. He is on a foot journey without provisions for himself or the dog. He is not looking where he is going, and is about to skip off a cliff.
As I pointed out, you see negative words in Fool’s very positive vocabulary – things like ‘for no reason,’ ‘doesn’t remember,’ being unaware,’ ‘doesn’t know’ and ‘have no idea,’ ‘not there,’ ‘not the one,’ ‘without,’ and ‘isn’t about to.’
When Fool gets together with Death, this makes a reader trip over Death as a negative modifier. A double negative is a positive in English but not in the romance languages – don’t know how that would work out in those – but in English, sometimes you have to do a double take, retrace, look at surrounding cards (if any) to understand what the sentence is telling you.
Fool and Death, when their meanings blend peacefully, say ‘not free,’ ‘don’t forget,’ ‘can’t ignore,’ ‘not openminded,’ ‘no fear of death,’ ‘the subconscious is not,’ and ‘I don’t care how it ends.
Death and Ace of Pentacles is of course ‘not the right way’ and ‘wasn’t on the road. The main thing you expect when these two get together is ‘not correct’ and ‘don’t have the money.’
Ace of Pentacles and Fool are most likely to bring up not caring about paying, being paid, or money. They also mean ‘don’t care if I am (or it is, or someone else is) correct.’ With Ace of Pentacles being reward or ‘getting the credit for,’ these two say ‘Don’t care if I get credit for it’ or ‘not expecting to be reimbursed.’
Note that both Ace of Pentacles and Fool share the concept of being ‘on the right path.’ Fool stresses living in the spirit, living unconsciously (or subconsciously, in the spirit), not paying attention to what people refer to as ‘the cares of this world.’

In the same way you can drive a car, even masterfully, and not know what’s under the hood, you live your life without consciously knowing what’s in your subconscious. Which is okay: Every driver need not be an auto mechanic. And in the same way that what’s under the hood sometimes intrudes inconveniently … we break down on the highway, or the horn goes off on its own … the subconscious drops into physical reality when we are least prepared.

Fool
Fool represents the zero, represents the cipher or place-holder whose presence isn’t quite normal – the nascent or larval stage in some way. Fool is the universe before the Big Bang. A majority of its meaning grows out of this fact.
So you find Fool, today, expressing this very concept in these ways:

Three of Wands
Three of Wands is an ‘old reliable.’ You see a man waiting for his ship to come in, eyeballing said ship. The check is in the mail, for real. Three of Wands mostly means three categories: money coming in or income; coming or approaching; and future. This is one of the cards that puts others into future tense, and means all sorts of things about an upcoming or incoming event. This card can also put nearby cards into gerund form – into ‘-ing’ form. For instance, we have ‘I am disengaging.’ Fool is ‘disengaged,’ and Three of Wands’ ‘-ing’ added to that indicates the disengaging is continual, is in process. Come to think of it, Three of Wands also translates ‘continual’ and ‘continuing’ as Two of Pentacles does. (Eight of Pentacles too, to a lesser extent.)
Three of Wands should mean ‘waiting’ more often than it does. Sometimes it takes the ‘coming’ as ‘progressing’ and says things like ‘times goes by’ and ‘out there’ and ‘always,’ which is somewhat an off-label use, but there ya go – it happens.
Hanged Man
Hanged Man pictures the disorientation you feel when the subconscious is active in ‘the real world.’ He is hung upside down (Buffalo Springfield song) and his head is afire with an energy halo. Being hung on a tree, often for three days, and exchanging a body function (an eye for All-Father Odin) for psychic abilities (referred to as ‘wisdom’) appears in several myths. So Hanged Man is a very deep Rider Waite Tarot card.
Its most frequent words and phrases apply to realizing, knowing, feeling and feeling intensely. It can translate ‘subconscious,’ as can Fool. And it also owns synonyms for intuition and psychism.

Now Without The Pictures |
First thing: Both Fool and Hanged man are the subconscious, and the third-rail card simply means ‘future’ and ‘incoming.’ So we are about subconscious. Fool is to forget; Hanged Man is to remember. That’s because Fool is living ‘out there’ and is oblivious to physical-zone stuff, and ‘forget’ goes along with ‘oblivious.’ And that’s because, as you can see, Hanged Man has this mental energy emanating from his head, so he remembers. So these three cards could easily say ‘Going to remember to forget.’
Fool means to assume; Hanged Man is to know. Hanged Man with Three of Wands is ‘know the future’ or know what’s ahead. Fool with Three of Wands is oblivious to the future or to what’s ahead, or to not care about the future.
To know and not care: Hanged Man knows; Fool cares not. You can do this sort of thing between these two cards with a lot of their meanings. For example our ‘My subconscious knows the future and doesn’t care’ sentence.
