………………….…………………… A glance at these three tells you this isn’t nice, that it’s about hardening yourself against (World) losing to (Five of Pentacles) someone who is out to get you and take what you have (Five of Swords) – that somebody here is going to lose and be miserable (Five of Pentacles). Keep in mind that ‘someone’ could be the bandit (Five of Swords), though. It goes like this:
………………………….. First of all, World is invincible, impregnable, hardened to the dark side by spiritual experience, and protected by a wall of defense as she goes about … whatever she chooses to do. In World’s case, she is dancing, with wands that represent spiritual power in each hand. (World is considered both genders despite the illustration’s being a shapely woman, by the way.) She does not defend herself directly: Her spiritual stature and her experience constitute a wall of protection around her. (I liken that to a martial artist – which World can represent – being overlooked by street punks.)

Next to her on the right is that street punk, the callous bastard with Mr. Cheney’s smirk on his face, the robber, the lowlife that pushes people around and takes foul advantage of his buddies. However, this Five of Swords card can also represent ‘beating it’ and revenge, and the ‘picked on the wrong person’ concept. Comeuppance, turning the tables on the perp. With World as the shapely dame with impregnable defenses, it is easy to see how ‘picked on the wrong person’ is likely.
………………………….. The remaining Rider Waite Tarot card in Tarot Verbatim™ also has a spiritual application to it. Five of Pentacles is the dark night of the soul part of spiritual life that comes right after a peak experience. It is the coming down from the mount of transfiguring enlightenment and noticing all that you lack now that you have seen not-of-this-world life. You feel dirty and inferior, feel unworthy, feel like a loser.
………………………….. Five of Pentacles shows injured bums (mother and son) on the street so miserable and numb that they walk right by a warm place to sleep and a meal there in the church that is always open to meet the needs of needy persons like themselves.

It is desperation, misery, sickness, being a loser, and being used to that and numb to that. It can also mean self-pity, whether the self-pity is justified or not. ‘Lower than a snake’s belly’ is a good phrase for Five of Pentacles.

The mills of the gods grind slowly, yet they grind exceedingly small: I think maybe Shakespeare or Milton penned that one. These two cards, in today’s economic climate, also describe a predatory bank dispossessing people of houses.
So our stories here are about the awful things you survive that make you stronger, and are about being that person who has survived those things and is now so advanced that a situation like that will never present itself again – the bad spirits and bad people are ‘not going to see you coming’ because you are so able to handle them. There is a major truth to the fact that when you solve a dilemma in your head and are ready with the perfect squelch to it … you won’t get to use that squelch because it isn’t looking to happen to you anymore … you’re ‘out.’ The story does not sugar-coat the awful things: We have the smirking bully and the terrible loss right here.

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

World………. World depicts an esoteric concept that a person who is a ‘master of both worlds’ (hence her two wands, one in each hand, left and right) is invincible to interference or attack. World is considered beyond gender, so both genders apply. So World is experienced and hardened to the dark side. Her standing makes her invisible to intruders or enemies, so there is a wall of protection around her. Especially with Five of Swords, World, in everyday reality represents the fact that when you have been wised up by experience with an abuser, you are not going to fall for that again – and abusers avoid someone who knows the ropes and is ready for them.
But World is not about this conflict – that is just the history of how she got where she is. World is a superior person who won’t put up with anything. World has no problems and no dependents. She is also about ‘being in a world of your own,’ and shutting out whatever is going on around you.

Five of Swords …………. is on the take, whether he be a street punk, a businessman or politician. He double-crosses buddies. The story in the illustration is of young nobles who were practicing with swords, and when this fellow won, he claimed their swords (and their feudal inheritances) as if they were dueling. This is a cruel callous person. But Five of Swords’ flip side is turning the tables on the wiseguy – the comeuppance of the perp. Five of Swords is also about ‘beating it,’ revenge, and outsmarting the bad guy. In this spread, he picked on the wrong person, World.

Five of Pentacles ………. is the low point of your life, depicted by a mother and son homeless in a blizzard, so numb with despair they pass by a church where a bed and a meal await them. Poverty, sickness, desperation, losing everything and being friendless. It is based on the Roman Catholic concept of ‘dark night of the soul,’ a period of aridity (dryness) that comes after a peak experience. Five of Pentacles is also feeling sorry for yourself.
