Six of Pentacles – An exchange – giving and getting – is what Six of Pentacles is all about, and it paints with a very broad brush for this. A fair exchange, usually, since the scales are involved. An exchange of money is pictured – the serfs getting their paycheck from the employer.

But Six of Pentacles is any kind of exchange, often attention, sometimes respect, sometimes even germs. This is the card for getting (or dispensing, or selling) pills – I guess because he is dropping round items into the receiving hands, and because ‘treating people’ is one of Six of Pentacles’ featured phrases. This concept can expand a little further to include medical treatment.

Quite often either giving or receiving (not the full exchange) is what Six of Pentacles is expressing. It means to pay bills and to get money, so words like these appear for Six of Pentacles: cost, owe, buy, paid, have the money, doing business, fines, dues, fees, and (of course) those monthly payments.

Fairness is very much a province of Six of Pentacles; it is a justice card because the employer is weighing the money fairly in the scales. Today it says ‘fair play.’

Phrases about paying attention include both the kind of ‘pay attention’ that involves thinking, and the kind of ‘pay attention’ that involves the way you treat someone or the way they treat you – phrases like: to be attentive, the way (she) treats people, the respect due you.

World – World has more meanings by far than most Tarot cards, at least in Tarot Verbatim™. Its core principle is that wreath-wall you see around the dancer with the double magic wands. World is about shutting in, shutting out, being intolerant, being snobbish, not needing anybody, not being interested, not involved, ignoring, having nothing to do with, not paying attention. It doesn’t get through, it can’t get through, won’t let it through, they are not bothering you, it won’t give you problems. This ‘not getting through’ will even show up as a physical barrier, like a seawall or a filter that filters something out. The presence of Two of Swords brings the ‘not getting through’ out in World today.

The wreath and ‘not getting through’ suggests privacy, doing your own thing, shutting out the world, cocooning or being cloistered. Today, the ‘through’ concept brings up ‘through no fault of your own,’ even.

The wreath wall and ‘not getting through’ also applies the other direction: being an outsider, having no connections, being out of the loop, being what moderns call ‘discriminated against.’

World is also a shapely lady, trophy woman, and a sexy lady (since she is dancing nude). Once in a while (especially if that is the subject matter somehow), World is a nude dancer, possibly in a cage.

World is also an expert, is top level at whatever-it-is, is a master, is the most skilled. That is because ‘master of both worlds’ is the source of this card’s illustration: A master magician is called that, and has control of both white and black magic – hence the two wands. Such a magician is not to be challenged, but feared for his or her talents. That’s why the entities outside the magic circle, the wreath, are looking away. World is invisible.

Two of Swords – Two of Swords is a simple plain-vanilla Tarot citizen. It is a negative modifier, really the main one. I call that a negator. Today 15 times it means things like: when you don’t, no way, don’t, doesn’t, not, what’s not, is not, can’t, you’re not, have no, I’m not.

Two of Swords shares some of World’s meanings: shut out, have nothing to do with, for instance.

Two of Swords will attract negative meanings like these: shut off, blacklisted, prohibitive or prohibited, denied, and ‘no others.’ You can see the ‘X’ pattern in the illustration that means ‘to X out.’

Here we have one of those rare spreads of three cards which say the same thing twice: Don’t pay attention, or not paying attention. World is obviously not paying attention to the neighbors on the other side of her wall, nor are the entities there paying any attention to World. And that’s the whole point of World; that’s its main meaning: shutting out, not being interfered with. She is doing her own thing; she isn’t paying attention.

Two of Swords is the most emphatic negator card; it’s a very strong negative modifier in Tarot Verbatim™. One of Six of Pentacles’ meanings (not its foremost) is ‘ paying attention.’ So Two of Swords and Six of Pentacles say ‘ not paying attention’ or ‘ Don’t pay attention.’

World and Two of Swords are both shutting out. Two of Swords shuts it out because it doesn’t see it and can’t do anything; World shuts it out because it doesn’t care about it.

So next to two cards about shutting it out and not being interested and having nothing to do with it sits Six of Pentacles: the input, the exchange. Six of Pentacles is something you give or something you are given. It’s also what you deserve, getting what you deserve, and giving (them) what (they) deserve. Six of Pentacles indicates something is the right or fair thing to do.

So our spread boils down to it being the right thing, or not being the right thing, to give or receive, to pay attention or not pay attention, to pay or not pay.
