Six of Cups – Romance, children and childhood, house and home, the past and nostalgia, and trust: These are the main course words of Six of Cups, and these are the ones in use today. The goodness of Six of Cups is amplified by Ace of Cups’ presence today, and Ace of Pentacles chimes in to limit the story to relationship(s).

.

Little boy giving little girl flowers with home in the background are the elements of the illustration that create these leading meanings.

Ace of Cups – This illustration depicts the effect a person who is ‘right with God’ has on surroundings and other people through spreading love. The dove is Holy Spirit; it infuses the bodily senses of an individual (the bottomless fountain the hand is holding) with love and virtue, and flows into the large body of water of the mass consciousness of the rest of us, where the water lilies bloom.

.

So the main meaning of Ace of Cups is love – any kind of good harmless beneficial nourishing love. This is also expressed with phrases that say the person you love or are affectionate with or fond of.

.

‘Good’ is also a main meaning of Ace of Cups, and is also applied with an even broader brush. Good, can trust, safe, innocent, peaceful, and even healing.

.

The flow brings Ace of Cups lesser, but still major, meanings like: cooperates, goes smoothly, relax, easy (the easy part).

Three of Pentacles – People meet together in a friendly respectful way in this picture to finish up some business and settle up the money in their contract agreement fair and square.

.

When in doubt, translate Three of Pentacles ‘relationship.’ ‘Doing their (or any pronoun) part’ is another very common translate for Three of Pentacles, because Three of Pentacles is very very much about ‘fair and square.’ The people meeting can be a team, and are frequently dealing with one another and doing business with one another. The business is frequently buying and selling, of course – an exchange.

.

Three of Pentacles is love or social relationships as easily as it is business relationships. The meeting Three of Pentacles features can be bumping into someone on the street or meeting to make love … whatever.

 LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING

            LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES

…………..…………. …………………….

.

Six of Cups and Ace of Cups are both very much romantic love cards, and both of them also commonly are about safety, and Three of Pentacles most of the time will translate ‘relationship,’ so we are all about love and romance, plus the extra meanings of these cards, like children, home, romance and the past for Six of Cups, and relax, ‘good,’ healing, safe, easy, and peaceful for Ace of Cups.

.

When your spread has nearly identical cards in it, they will switch off, taking turns translated the main meaning they share, with the other one translating one of its other meanings. You get used to this. Today is another great example of the process. Today is a good day to go into this subtle subject, because it is all over the place in this layout.

.

A simple example of the process is ‘Innocent in juvenile court.’ Both Six of Cups and Ace of Cups own ‘innocent.’ Six of Cups means juvenile, so it goes over there to match up with the ‘court’ of Three of Pentacles.

.

‘A storybook true-love romantic relationship’ is a fine line as to which card gets what words (and here it doesn’t really matter much). It ends up that Six of Cups specifically means ‘romance,’ so it takes both ‘storybook,’ which Ace of Cups does not have a claim to, and ‘romance,’ leaving Ace of Cups ‘true love,’ which is a phrase it has a solid claim to. Yes, this is splitting hairs, but the hairs are on the table asking to be split.

.

Someone I was fond of in my past’ clearly cedes the love feeling, ‘fond’ to Ace of Cups because Six of Cups owns ‘the past.’

.

The good old days when good people did their part’ brings up the fact that ‘the good old days’ is the purvue of Six of Cups, and the word ‘good’ is a large percentage of Ace of Cups’ dictionary. You find these overlaps in your spreads, and you can artfully phrase them. I look for opportunities to do that because it’s fun.

.

The good old days of safe neighborhoods’ is a different example, a different case. Both Ace of Cups and Six of Cups translate ‘safe.’ Six of Cups all by itself means ‘safe neighborhood.’ So ‘safe’ has dual citizenship here, and we assign it to Ace of Cups because that card doesn’t have anything else to its name in this sentence. Another split hair, yes.

.

‘A sweet deal on a quaint cottage’ plunks the ‘sweet’ of Six of Cups into buying real estate in Three of Pentacles: Three of Pentacles is a deal, not specifically a sweet deal, but, again, one of its meanings is a real estate deal because the picture shows the closing on a contract on the building you are looking at and that same building in the blueprint. And Six of Cups is the quaint cottage, of course.

.

They give you the contract because they can trust you’ gives Six of Cups ‘they give you’ because Ace of Cups has to get the ‘trust you’ since it doesn’t have anything else to contribute. Three of Pentacles is the contract of course. Conceivably (in another sentence), Three of Pentacles can mean ‘They give you the contract.’

.

Nostalgic about our time together when we were in love.’

This one is an example of what I think of as ‘ghostly influence.’ Ghostly influence is the tendency of Tarot to express a given idea in cards that have elements in common but not in a dominant way in the given sentence. ‘Nostalgic’ is for sure Six of Cups. But so is ‘when we were,’ meaning the past. However, Ace of Cups can be stretched to say ‘when we were in love.’ We have a choice whether to split off ‘when we were’ or leave it attached to Ace of Cups: distinction without a difference.

.

In the phrase ‘love and trust,’ Six of Cups has a stronger claim on ‘trust’ than Ace of Cups does, so Ace of Cups gets the love.

.

You used to give me flowers’ is an example of what I call ‘doubling up’ on your meanings. Six of Cups is the little boy giving the little girl flowers, and it also means the past, so it owns ‘used to.’ Another example in today’s sentences of doubling up is ‘Specialists meet as a team,’ with Ace of Cups dropping ‘healing’ into the mix. Three of Pentacles means all three: specialists, meet, and team.

.

Our storybook love affair’ is another example of doubling up: Ace of Cups alone, or Six of Cups alone, can translate ‘love affair,’ but Three of Pentacles, since it is hanging around on the periphery of the focus of this sentence, picks up ‘affair,’ which it usually uses along the lines of business affairs, but, oh, well – this is legal. We give Ace of Cups the love and Three of Pentacles the affair. An example of Ace of Cups translating ‘love affair’ all by itself is to be seen in ‘We treat each other fair in an old-fashioned love affair.’

.

Someone I was fond of in my past’ is an example of ‘tense bleeding,’ I call it. Ace of Cups really means ‘someone I am fond of’ – it does not have its door open to the past as Six of Cups does. But Six of Cups is there casting that ‘past’ shadow, so Ace of Cups translates, in this context ‘someone I was fond of’ since ‘in my past’ is left on the doorstep by Six of Cups. This same thing happens with ‘Dealing with the past was the easy part.’ ‘Dealing with’ belongs to Three of Pentacles. ‘The past’ belongs to Six of Cups. ‘Is the easy part’ is the way that would usually be said, but there’s a foreign influence in the air that makes ‘is’ past tense, like it or not.

.

Good people did their part in the good old days’ is an example of how Ace of Cups could be ‘good people’ all by itself, but ‘people doing their part’ is solidly Three of Pentacles’ territory. It is also an example of the ghost tense: ‘do’ or ‘doing’ their part is more like it for Three of Pentacles, but the fumes of Six of Cups turn it past tense.

. ……. ….. ……. ..

.

AND NOW WITHOUT THE PICTURES:

In the good old days of safe neighborhoods and people who kept their word, there were likely to be more people in your life that you could trust. Heck, I remember like it was yesterday … and it was .. how I loved my old home and loved what I paid for it too. Well, we still treat each other fair in an old-fashioned love relationship. Doing business with someone we trust is another endeavor.
