GUIDANCE Not letting it get to you, and not borrowing trouble: That’s our shtick today. Just because something can worry me, just because something is aggravating and/or awful, doesn’t mean it’s worthy of investing my actual worry beads on. Things I can’t do worry me – limitations, you know, from inside and from outside. Yeah, that’s worth angst time. But letting the defective units around me affect me … well, I shut them out in the interests of stress management. (Descriptions of the defective units included in today’s ruminations.)

LEARN TAROT BY PICTURES..
….. …….…… ….. Okay, class, periscope up: We got here on our table three very negative cards. We got worries and sleepless nights in Nine of Swords – the nightmare itself. We got people who are trouble and dysfunctional social situations in Ten of Pentacles. And, as if that weren’t enough to cope with, here comes Eight of Swords itself: being stuck, and not being able to do anything about it.
Luckily, Eight of Swords also means ‘can’t,’ including meaning ‘can’t’ in its sense of ‘won’t.’ Like, “I can’t do THAT.” That type of can’t.
And luckily, Ten of Pentacles – the source of trouble and troublemaking – can receive the action of that trouble in the worry that Nine of Swords provides. The relatives are upset when they can’t make trouble, for instance.
And luckily, the ‘can’t’ of Eight of Swords can attach to the worry itself that Nine of Swords donates. So ‘Can’t worry about that.’
So what we talk about with these three heavies is: not taking on other people’s well-earned distress; worrying about what does limit you … that’s permitted …; and even giving the folks who box you in something to worry about themselves.
You could say we are laying out strategies about aggravations today? Today’s sentences boil down to the Latin slogan for ‘Don’t let the bastards get to you!’ “Noli nothis permittere te terere.”

Nine of Swords Nine of Swords Nine of Swords is when it really gets to you – is when you are up nights worrying or even crying. The illustration shows a person in the pose of grief, sitting bolt upright in bed in the wee hour, hands to head. It is also about just being up at night, so Nine of Swords isn’t limited to nightmarish scenarios. It can mean not being able to sleep for whatever reason. Keep in mind that this Rider Waite Tarot card is all about stress, and sometimes a form of the word ‘stress’ fits its sentence best.
One ‘Nine of Swords lite’ meaning is being a worrier or worrywart. Another is simply having a headache, or something is ‘a headache.’ Nine of Swords is ‘crybaby’ too. (Watch for these lite meanings; they let the air out of the pressure tank!)
Eight of Swords Eight of Swords Eight of Swords is in a bind. Eight of Swords is describes when someone (or something, actually) is trapped, ‘hands are tied,’ and even ‘tied up,’ time-wise. There’s just no way; it’s impossible. Eight of Swords is when you are … or when you feel … helpless. Or surrounded. Boxed in. Limited. Handicapped. Unable. The fight isn’t in you. You feel, or you are, weak – or too weak for a particular situation. (Nine of Swords brings out that ‘particular situation,’ actually: something that gets to you.) You are a victim. The atmosphere is stifling. You are stymied, usually by a person … who is usually overbearing.
Note in the illustration of Eight of Swords that the bindings on the victim are loose; that heavy swords are put just a little ways into swampy soil, so even if they were a threat standing up, they aren’t for long; that she is totally alone … no one around should be wish to shed those ribbons.
Two other things about Eight of Swords: (1) it is the actual death card, and will translate ‘death,’ which doesn’t have to be the death of a living thing, but can be the dead end of an inanimate thing or concept. (It can also be a dead body if that is the question – like an autopsy inquiry.) (2) It can be the phony ‘I can’t’ that means ‘I ain’t.’
Ten of Pentacles Ten of Pentacles In the back of my mind, I label Ten of Pentacles ‘People who have a problem, or who are a problem.’ It’s about those people. Those troublesome relatives. Those neurotic-as-heck coworkers. Those trashy neighbors. The corrupt politicos or the mob folks. The situation at home that you are a part of. Ten of Pentacles is people who don’t get along, from mere misfits to the family feud to political infighting. All of that stuff.
That’s what the illustration shows: Generations of this family clash. Grandpa … accent on the ‘grand,’ has decreed something that upsets Wife, who pleads with Husband, who is staring vacantly in the other direction from her. Squalling kid pulls on her skirt. I get the idea the men have got together to take some advantage of the lone female, and that Grand-pa is demanding yet another heir to his throne. The homage the greyhounds are paying him just isn’t enough.
Ten of Pentacles is the negative family-couple-relationship-marriage card. It is the main card for political stuff of any kind, including political parties, political meetings, and dealing with the system at any level. It is the main card also for the mob, gangs of any sort. And Ten of Pentacles is also about culture being an obstacle to a person, about not fitting in because you are a foreigner in some way, which would include language, class, and looks.
But Ten of Pentacles isn’t just a people-card; it is a situation card for trouble and problems, and for social complications. It especially covers family problems, stress in home life, problems with the clan (relatives). If the question is about employment situations, then it’s those pesky workmates. And Ten of Pentacles is spot on both for the ghetto and the power people. (Those two groups have the same culture, by the way.) Ten of Pentacles (especially with Five of Pentacles) can represent the ghetto.

Aggravations and annoyances … and aggravating people and annoying people … are something we try to push off the plate like tykes who won’t eat their peas. Huh-hunh. Not the way. Stare them down after you locate them with a little social analysis. Some of them, you just don’t let them get to you. Others of them, you get to them … maybe not first, but at least: better! Keep your cage clean, here, I am telling myself!
