Eight of Pentacles ……… The carpenter at his work bench is busy making one artifact after the other with his tools, doing his usual routine in a workmanlike manner. All Eight of Pentacles’ meanings arise from these words and this concept. Work, worker, work place, workingman, labor, the usual routine, regularly, repetitive action, keeping (anything) up, being the one who does the hands-on work. It also means activity.

Two of Cups …………. This is not an obvious illustration. The caduceus – a lion’s head with wings, over snakes intertwined on a rod – symbolizes the covert participation of spirits in human affairs – and it’s not usually for anything good. You see it in ancient drawings, and there’s a Bible story about it accomplishing something – I think making births among a man’s sheep. It stands for almost any outside influence or covert control in your life: a mooch, a hot love affair, a conspiracy, taking advantage, cheating an employer or a loved one – anything at all in that sort of category.

Four of Swords ………. Four of Swords is ‘time out.’ A man lying on a coffin in a cathedral is doing a ritual required for knighthood. He meditates on his life purpose as a knight, and tells the bishop about it, who decides whether he is fit. (The story had better be good.) Four of Swords is inactivity, opting out, not doing, sleeping or resting (or even being in a coma), being lazy or being a couch potato.
