Tarot Verbatim
GUIDANCE A storm of fast out-of-control movement is stopped. Don’t let things get out of hand the way they are headed. Hurry up and put an end to something – don’t panic, just run over there. Some things are such a mess they cannot be done in a hurry, and doing things in a hurry is often what made the mess in the first place. So run over there, but don’t speed so fast you’re out of control on the way to putting out the fire.

Death – Seven of Cups – Knight of Wands
.
LEARN TAROT BY OBSERVING
.
……….……... .…. Death is stop; Knight of Wands is full speed ahead. In between, Seven of Cups is ‘What the hell?’ Being in a rush, you make a mess of things, and then you’re in a rush to have them not be a mess. Sometimes you run away from a scene so you don’t go berserk. Sometimes the one who makes us crazy leaves on his or her own. Ah ….
…………………. Death is a pest. See all the contradictions here, one after the other? That’s Death negating things. Death makes you wish you had a question, or at least a querant (questioner), to know where to attach the clothespin of Death. Death means ‘end’ and it also negates, so with Seven of Cups being an out-of-control mess, Death says both ‘not out of control, not a mess’ and ‘end the mess, quit being out of control.’ In the same way, Death takes the ‘hurry’ common meaning of Knight of Wands to say ‘no hurry’ and ‘hurry up to end it.’ Nevertheless, Death is such a welcome sight when you have one of those scary cards, and Death negates it, pulls its stinger right out. Great example of how two negatives make a positive in the English language. (I often wonder if the meanings follow the same pattern in languages in which two negatives simply echo one another.)
………………….. Seven of Cups is when it hits the fan right in front of your face. The illustration is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice story, and it also suits the Pandora’s Box story. In each, the bad spirits are let loose. In each, the chaos is calmed down. So Seven of Cups is when all hell breaks out. ‘Mess,’ ‘out-of-control’ and ‘things falling apart’ are frequent translates for Seven of Cups.
You see unrelated items in a cloud and in the cups. The one that is veiled is the good spirit in the Pandora’s Box story. Seven of Cups is about things jumbled together, like the debris from a storm or a filing system in bad shape, or several symptoms that do not point to a diagnosis, or someone’s disordered mind, or like metastasis of a tumor. Mixed up. ‘Every one of them,’ and like phrases belong here too.
The figure in the black robe (magician) is shocked and surprised as he is no longer in control of the critters. That reaction is also an trunk of Seven of Cups’ meaning tree. Words like ‘amazing’ and ‘unbelievable’ fit in here.
Seven of Cups comes up for that moment when ‘the cat is let out of the bag’ and a scandal erupts.
…………………. Knight of Wands is similar to Knight of Swords, and both have the same opposite meanings. It goes like this: Knight of Wands is moving at high speed, so this is a card for hurry, rush, speeding, being on the road. This is also true of Knight of Swords. Then, Knight of Wands can be hightailing it out of town (getting out of Dodge) or can be pursuing – even in hot pursuit. This is also true of Knight of Swords – and he can also doubling back, making a U-turn – also at high speed. The illustration of Knight of Wands is more consistent with fleeing than pursuing: his horse is rearing, and the look on his face is abashed rather than avid, and his weapon is down at his side. Nevertheless, Knight of Wands can mean either. Knight of Swords’ illustration shows his horse flying and him extending his heavy weapon in a way suggesting he will be using it shortly.
Here are Knight of Wands’ today translates:
hurry
quickly
rush through
high speed
so fast
speeding
full speed ahead
leave right now
left town
off I go
running to you
race over there
get past that
leave
right now
get away from
get it done fast
fast-moving.
Things are in flux today. They are going every which way. Being in a hurry can mess something up that you will be in a hurry to fix. Things are headed toward chaos and you rush over there to head it off. Looks like the fire is put out, the crazy-making person leaves town, and the rescue team doesn’t run off the road.
Now we show where each of the phrases in each of the sentences comes from:
…………..………………

Death………Death’s illustration shows regime change, ‘The king is dead; long live the king.’ and that’s what it ought to be about: the end of one thing is the beginning of another. Nope – maybe once in a blue moon, for me.
Death can refer to death, but is not a lead card for that; it’s a support card. We could have said today ‘Died in a high-speed wreck,’ for instance – the cards are classic for that. But without a context that gives the green light for a death, I would not put that as a meaning because you don’t use Death as a lead card for death. (By the way, you may not have the same experience if you and Tarot have established Death being a lead card for the subject in your readings. There are more ways to read Tarot than there are Tarot readers.)
In Tarot Verbatim™ and nowhere else (unless they’re listening!), Death is any negative modifier, and reaches out to modify any nearby card in an undifferentiated spread like this one. An undifferentiated spread is one that doesn’t have position-meanings that affect the card that occupies that slot.
Death also means the end – and ‘to end’ of course. Today, over and over, it translates ‘don’t.’ Here are all the words (minus the many repeats) that death means here today:
Don’t
can’t
Not
weren’t
No, don’t
did not
End
No more
NOT!
stop it
aren’t
ended up.
Seven of Cups………….Seven of Cups, as I said in Learn Tarot by Observing, illustrates both Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Pandora’s Box stories, in which demons are loosed and chaos breaks out. In Pandora’s box, the good spirit is let out after that – and that is the one under the veil in the picture here. In Sorcerer’s Apprentice, the professional magician, the boss, puts things back in order.
Seven of Cups is things being out of control, being a mess, being scrambled. Unrelated objects jumbled together: that meaning is applied in all sorts of ways, from the contents of a junk drawer, to a tumor that has metastasized. ‘Needle in a haystack’ comes up for Seven of Cups every once in a while. This category of meanings arises from the unrelated items in the cups.
Seven of Cups’ cloud (and the debris) contribute its storm meanings. Fog and pesticide spray belong to Seven of Cups too.
Other meanings arise from the way the figure in the black robe (culprit who let the critters out of the bag) is taken aback: shock, surprise, amazing, unbelievable. Seven of Cups also describes a scandal getting disseminated – ‘let out.’
.
Knight of Wands………. In Learn Tarot by Observing, I explained Knight of Wands and Knight of Swords in Tarot Verbatim: very flexible. So flexible that you don’t use these as anchor cards: You let the context tell you which direction – pursuit or fleeing – leaving home or running home – applies. Hurry, rush, speed – these are involved for sure, though. Today Knight of Wands is mostly leaving. The one that is ‘running to you’ about confusing a horse could really have gone either way.
